In a thriller that went down to the last 0.1 seconds, Maccabi Playtika Tel Aviv edged Real Madrid 79-78 in Round 7 on Thursday.

Maccabi Playtika Tel Aviv edged Real Madrid 79-78 in a Round 7 thriller on Thursday after entering the fourth quarter down 9. Both teams now have 3-4 records in the standings. 

Saben Lee led the winners with 19 points, including the game-winning shot with 0.1 seconds remaining. Rokas Jokubaitis added 17 points and 7 assists, Roman Sorkin scored 13, Jasiel Rivero 10 and Will Rayman hauled in 14 rebounds for Maccabi. Mario Hezonja led Real with 18 points. Facu Campazzo scored 16 and dished 7 assists and Walter Tavares had 11 points for the visitors.

Sorkin got Maccabi going with a backdoor layup and Levi Randolph bettered Tavares's jump hook with a three-pointer for a 5-2 lead. Hezonja banked in a close shot and Tavares hit a jumper to give Real its first lead, 5-6. Jokubaitis fired in a step-back triple and Sorkin also struck from downtown to restore an 11-8 Maccabi edge. Hezonja dunked and improved Randolph's jumper with a three-pointer that tied it at 13-13. Sorkin insisted from beyond the arc. Jokubaitis and Campazzo traded baskets before Sergio Llull's three-pointer tied the game again, 18-18. After Rivero and the red-hot Llull traded triples, Hezonja dunked off a steal for a 21-23 Real lead after 10 minutes. 

Rivero buried a six-meter jumper early in the second quarter. Xavier Rathan-Mayes hit a turnaround shot that Lee bettered with a bomb from beyond the arc. Jake Cohen found his first points and Lee insisted from downtown for a 31-27 Maccabi lead. Jokubaitis buried a jumper off the dribble and improved on Tavares's dunk with a three-pointer that prompted Real to call timeout at 36-29. Campazzo rescued Real with a couple of fastbreak layups and a triple to tie it. Campazzo kept pacing Los Blancos with a driving layup and he followed Hezonja's coast-to-coast basket with a three-point play for a 36-43 Real lead at halftime.

Randolph hit a jumper soon after the break and Jaylen Hoard added a layup that got Maccabi within 40-43. After Alberto Abalde scored in penetration, Sorkin answered from downtown. Hezonja's close basket established a 43-47 Real lead. Campazzo found Gabriel Deck for a fastbreak layup that Will Rayman matched with a put-back basket. Sorkin scored around the basket and Lee tied it at 49-49. Abalde and Hezonja each stepped up with a three-pointer to give Real fresh air at 51-55. Deck took over with a wild three-point play and Tavares added a layup-plus-foul to make it 53-61. Abalde bettered Hoard's jumper with a three-point play that fixed the score at 55-64 after 30 minutes.

Campazzo fed Eli Ndiaye for a backdoor layup early in the fourth quarter. Randolph and Hoard stepped up for Maccabi and Lee made a jumper, which caused Real to call timeout at 62-66. Llull rescued Real, Jokubaitis buried a step-back jumper, then Tavares scored down low to boost his team's lead to 64-71 with over 4 minutes left. Lee got help from Jokubaitis to bring Maccabi within 69-72. Rathan-Mayes scored in penetration and Campazzo made it 70-76 with over 2 minutes remaining. Jokubaitis downed a jumper and Rivero improved on Deck's layup with a triple that got Maccabi within 75-78. After Rivero scored around the basket, Real called timeout at 77-78 with 35.8 seconds left. Campazzo missed a floater and Maccabi got the ball back with 12.7 seconds remaining. Lee took Deck one-on-one and buried the game winning shot with 0.1 remaining.

Something has to give in Round 7’s Rivalry Series game

This season hasn’t exactly got off to the best of starts for the Turkish Airlines EuroLeague’s two Italian clubs, [EA7 Emporio Armani Milan](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/en/euroleague/teams/ea7-emporio-armani-milan/mil/?season=2024-25) and [Virtus Segafredo Bologna](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/en/euroleague/teams/virtus-segafredo-bologna/vir/?season=2024-25). Both teams have a 1-5 record after six rounds and the picture already looks bleak, but the Derby d’Italia – the Rivalry Series game in Round 7 on Thursday night – offers the chance for one of these sides to start building some momentum.

Milan’s lone victory this season came in Round 2 as it defeated Paris Basketball at Unipol Forum ([79-74](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/en/euroleague/news/olimpia-milano-grinds-out-tough-home-win-over-paris-basketball-79-74/)). Since then, the side from the world’s fashion capital has twice lost at home, which includes Zalgiris Kaunas’s memorable comeback from 27 points down to win [82-85](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/en/euroleague/news/zalgiris-stages-huge-comeback-to-edge-milan-on-the-road-82-85/) in Round 4. Head coach Ettore Messina was not on the bench for Milan’s Round 6 loss at Baskonia Vitoria-Gasteiz ([88-83](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/en/euroleague/news/forrest-baskonia-hold-off-milan-88-83/)), with assistant coach Mario Fioretti taking the reins, and he will be absent again on Thursday night due to sickness.

Virtus, meanwhile, has tasted victory in the EuroLeague more recently than its archenemy, downing Partizan Mozzart Bet Belgrade [69-70](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/en/euroleague/news/virtus-gets-off-the-mark-with-hard-fought-win-at-partizan-69-70/) on the road in Round 5. Luca Banchi’s men rallied back from 16 points down at home to FC Bayern Munich in Round 6 to take an 80-79 lead in the final 2 minutes, but [Shabazz Napier](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/en/euroleague/players/shabazz-napier/011224/)’s dagger three-pointer with 5 seconds remaining proved pivotal as Virtus went on to win [84-87](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/en/euroleague/news/napier-leads-bayern-past-virtus-84-87/). That was a bitter pill to swallow for those on the black-and-white side of Basket City, but a derby victory often has a habit of righting some wrongs.

In what is a repeat of the last four editions of the Italian League finals, Milan and Virtus will be particularly eager to get back on track in this Rivalry Series clash. One of the key men for Milan will be 2021-22 EuroLeague MVP [Nikola Mirotic](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/euroleague/players/nikola-mirotic/000796/), who has posted 22.3 points, 7.0 rebounds, 1.7 assists and a 24.7 PIR over the team’s last three EuroLeague games, while the return of [Josh Nebo](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/euroleague/players/josh-nebo/011199/) from injury is an added boost. Like Nebo, another summer recruit who should have a big impact on the contest is all-action forward [Zach LeDay](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/euroleague/players/zach-leday/008987/), although the absence of [Shavon Shields](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/euroleague/players/shavon-shields/007831/) due to injury will hinder Milan on the offensive end.

Coach Banchi will certainly be looking for ex-CSKA Moscow duo [Toko Shengelia](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/euroleague/players/tornike-shengelia/001133/) and [Will Clyburn](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/euroleague/players/will-clyburn/004888/) – ranked 17th and 18th, respectively, in the all-time scoring charts – to step up to the plate. Shengelia is coming off an impressive showing against Bayern that saw him net 21 points, a season high, while Clyburn had 27 points – his most in a non-overtime game since October 22, 2021 – in Virtus’s only win of the campaign at Partizan. Swingman [Isaia Cordinier](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/euroleague/players/isaia-cordinier/009549/) is another who will be leaned on after enjoying a career year so far, scoring in double figures in each of his team’s first six games and averaging 15.0 points per night. While Milan will be without Shields, Virtus has had to make do without defensive pest [Alessandro Pajola](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/euroleague/players/alessandro-pajola/006739/) for the last two games due to injury, and he is out once again Round 7, as is fellow guard [Daniel Hackett](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/euroleague/players/daniel-hackett/001844/).

Napier led Bayern to an 84-87 road win over Virtus Segafredo Bologna. He had 16 points on 3-of-3 two-pointers and 7-of-7 free throws, as well as 5 rebounds, 7 assists, a steal and 7 fouls drawn to get a PIR of 26. Napier went 1 of 7 from downtown but buried the go-ahead three-pointer with 5.0 seconds left to secure Bayern’s first road win of the season. This is Napier's first EuroLeague MVP of the Round honor in his 46th game in the competition.

The highest PIR of this round belonged to ALBA Berlin’s [Justin Bean](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/euroleague/players/justin-bean/012721/), whose team registered an 83-92 home loss against Paris Basketball. Bean led ALBA with a career-best 16 points on 6-of-8 two-pointers, 1-of-3 three-pointers and 1-of-1 free throws, in addition to posting a career-high 14 rebounds, 3 assists, a steal, a block and 4 fouls drawn for a PIR of 34 – more than double his previous highest PIR. 

[Sasha Vezenkov](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/euroleague/players/sasha-vezenkov/003469/) of Olympiacos Piraeus recorded a PIR of 25 in the Reds' 79-69 home victory over Real Madrid. Vezenkov had a season-high 23 points, 8 rebounds, 2 assists, 2 steals and 2 fouls drawn. 

[Juancho Hernangomez](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/euroleague/players/juancho-hernangomez/012712/) of Panathinaikos AKTOR Athens, with a PIR of season-high 24, and [Uros Plavsic](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/euroleague/players/uros-plavsic/006240/) of Crvena Zvezda Meridianbet Belgrade, who amassed a PIR of career-best 23, complete the top individual performances in Round 6. 

Hernangomez scored 13 points on perfect shooting, going 5 for 5 on two-pointers and 1 for 1 on three-pointers, while he also had 5 rebounds, 4 assists and 1 steal. Plavsic posted 16 points, 9 rebounds, 1 assist and 2 blocks, all of which are career-best marks.

Paris (3-3) will look for a third straight win with a visit from Baskonia (4-2), which is targeting a first road victory. Zalgiris Kaunas has announced the signing of Lonnie Walker on a deal until the end of the 2024-25 EuroLeague season.

Lonnie Walker joins Zalgiris Kaunas

[Zalgiris Kaunas](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/en/euroleague/teams/zalgiris-kaunas/zal/?season=2024-25) has announced the signing of Lonnie Walker on a deal until the end of the 2024-25 season.

Walker (1.93 meters, 25 years old) has spent his entire professional career to date in the NBA, posting career averages of 9.8 points, 2.3 rebounds and 1.5 assists in 341 games. 

He most recently played for the Brooklyn Nets, where he averaged 9.7 points, 2.2 rebounds and 1.3 assists in 58 appearances in 2023-24.

Walker was drafted by the San Antonio Spurs with the 18th overall pick in the 2018 NBA Draft and remained with the franchise for four seasons. His best year with the Spurs ended up being his final year as he averaged a career-best 12.1 points and 2.2 assists in 70 games.

After San Antonio, Walker spent one year with the Los Angeles Lakers, where he posted 11.7 points – his second-highest points average in his career – in 56 games. Then came his move to Brooklyn in the summer of 2023.

The shooting guard signed a deal with the Boston Celtics this past August but was waived, freeing him to play in another famous green: the green of Zalgiris Kaunas.

Walker's contract with Zalgiris includes an NBA-out clause that can be exercised until February 18 for 'a hefty buyout'.

Flowing team effort helped Monaco overcome battling Partizan

AS Monaco ground out [a precious 74-79 win at Partizan Mozzart Bet Belgrade](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/en/euroleague/news/resurgent-monaco-forces-partizan-into-submission-74-79/) as player of the game [Alpha Diallo](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/en/euroleague/players/alpha-diallo/011226/) came off the bench to lead a cohesive team effort in the cauldron of a jam-packed Aleksandar Nikolic Hall.

Diallo finished the game on 18 points, 6 boards and 3 steals in 29:48 minutes on the court to lift Monaco past the home team, which had erased a 16-point deficit with a spirited second-half fightback.

Partizan nosed ahead 73-72 in the home stretch but Monaco had the last laugh thanks to its vast resources, with [Mike James](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/euroleague/players/mike-james/005985/) and [Elie Okobo](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/euroleague/players/elie-okobo/011212/) sinking tough shots in crunch time to silence a raucous home crowd.

Diallo, who hurt Partizan from all over as he shot 7 of 10 from two-point territory, inside and outside the paint, acknowledged that airtight defense when the chips were down made the difference as Monaco closed shop and emerged as a well-deserved winner.

“It’s a great win for us. We locked down on defense and got some crucial rebounds and were able to get the job done,” Diallo said in a courtside post-game interview. “We played with a lot of grit for a longer period of time and that’s going to win you some games.”

James and Okobo netted 15 points each and the latter pointed out that Monaco had to go the extra mile to subdue Partizan, which found an extra gear in the second half and roared back after the home players were galvanized by frenetic support from the stands.

“We showed some real team chemistry today,” he said. “We had a really good first half, they had a really good run in the second but we kept our poise and shared the ball. It’s a crazy crowd every time we come to Belgrade, but we stayed together and showed character.”

Monaco head coach Sasa Obadovic won a personal battle against his Serbian compatriot Zeljko Obradovic of Partizan and praised his team for showing mettle when the hosts looked likely to come out on top.

“We have a lot of talent on this team and I really like the positive impact made by the bench,” Obradovic stated. “Everyone contributed and it’s a very important win for us because it will boost our confidence.”

The French side leaned on the individual talent of its top players in the face of adversity
