AS Monaco silenced a fervent home crowd inside Aleksandar Nikolic Hall as Mike James and Elie Okobo came up big down the stretch to give the French side a morale-boosting 74-79 road win at Partizan Mozzart Bet Belgrade in Round 6 of the 2024-25 Turkish Airlines EuroLeague season.

James and Okobo scored 15 points each while Alpha Diallo paced Monaco with 18 points and 6 boards as the visitors improved to 4-2. Partizan, meanwhile, dropped to 2-4 after a second damaging home loss in as many games, having been edged by Virtus Segafredo Bologna 69-70 last week.

Carlik Jones and Iffe Lundberg led Partizan on 15 points each while Isaac Bonga chipped in with 11 points and 10 boards, but the Serbian giant once again came up short when the chips were down.

Partizan dominated the boards in the first quarter, outrebounding the visitors 11-4, but Monaco took better care of the ball as the visiting team committed no turnovers in the opening 10 minutes, facilitating a 21-23 lead before romping away in the second.

The home team could not do anything right as it kept hitting a wall on offense while Diallo, James and Okobo ripped through the hosts’ defense time and again, allowing Monaco to engineer a 30-46 lead shortly before halftime.

Having trailed 33-46 at the interval, Partizan finally found its range and momentum in the third quarter as Isaac Bonga and Mario Nakic hit a couple of three-pointers and Lundberg followed in their footsteps, with the home team turning the tide to take a 54-53 lead.

However, Monaco replied with a swift 2-8 run to get back into the driving seat ahead of the final 10 minutes, setting the tone for a seesaw fourth-quarter battle. With the lead changing hands several times, Partizan nosed ahead for the last time, 73-72, before clutch shots from Okobo and James forced the final twist.

Both were off balance in a defender’s face, demonstrating the high class Monaco boasts, and it made all the difference in a titanic clash played at a torrid pace from start to finish.

Four of Zalgiris Kaunas’s signings from the summer – Sylvain Francisco, Deividas Sirvydis, Alen Smailagic and Bryant Dunston – all stepped up in a win over KK Crvena zvezda in Round 6 of the 2024-25 EuroLeague season.

What a night for [Zalgiris Kaunas](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/en/euroleague/teams/zalgiris-kaunas/zal/?season=2024-25). Not only did Andrea Trinchieri’s squad move to 5-1, giving them the joint best record in the Turkish Airlines EuroLeague, but four of the team’s summer signings had pivotal roles in [an 86-84 win over Crvena Zvezda Meridianbet Belgrade](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/en/euroleague/news/bryant-dunston-game-winner-sees-zalgiris-down-crvena-zvezda-at-the-buzzer-86-84/).

Zalgiris made seven signings for its first-team roster this past summer, of which six remain after Tyrone Wallace’s departure from the club. On Wednesday night, the fantastic four of [Sylvain Francisco](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/en/euroleague/players/sylvain-francisco/007975/), [Deividas Sirvydis](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/euroleague/players/deividas-sirvydis/007029/), [Alen Smailagic](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/en/euroleague/players/alen-smailagic/011051/) and [Bryant Dunston](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/euroleague/players/bryant-dunston/003048/) all stepped up to the plate at various points of what proved to be a very thrilling contest.

Sirvydis was the first to get going, knocking down a three-pointer off an out-of-bounds play with 2 minutes remaining in the first quarter before getting the shooter’s roll on another triple. That allowed Zalgiris to enter the second quarter with a 24-18 lead. He stayed hot for the rest of the first half, entering the break with 14 points, with the hosts 47-33 up. Come the end of the night, he had tied his career high with 17 points, the same total he managed against Olympiacos Piraeus in Round 2.

He also got some assistance from Smailagic, who scored 7 of his 10 first-half points in the second quarter. The ex-Partizan Mozzart Bet Belgrade forward went on to finish with 14 points, his highest tally in a Zalgiris jersey. Together, Sirvydis and Smailagic were the two driving forces for Zalgiris, while Zvezda had very few answers for the two 24-year-olds.

The third quarter became the Francisco show as the French made up for a slow first half that saw him go scoreless, dish 2 assists, make 1 steal and commit 2 turnovers. After the break, he ensured that Zvezda’s fightback was quickly thwarted by amassing 9 points, 2 rebounds and 4 assists in the third quarter alone; the visitors got within five points on a few occasions (48-43, 50-45, 52-47, 60-55), but Francisco’s efforts meant Zalgiris entered the fourth with a nine-point advantage, 66-57. What’s more, Francisco got 6 points in the fourth quarter to help see Zalgiris home.

Last but not least, Mr. Dunston. Second all-time in EuroLeague blocks, there is little that Dunston hasn’t experienced in his 12-year EuroLeague career… well, he was missing one thing – a game-winning shot. But first, let’s talk about a play in the first quarter. The 38-year-old might not move like he once did, but he is still among the smartest players in the EuroLeague, as he showed by stealing the ball from [Nemanja Nedovic](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/en/euroleague/players/nemanja-nedovic/000848/) and finding [Dovydas Giedraitis](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/en/euroleague/players/dovydas-giedraitis/007513/) for a fast-break layup. That was a play that set a 15-12 score – hardly revolutionary – but it received a loud roar from the Zalgiris fans due to the effort Dunston showed.

Then, the play of the night. With 1.3 seconds left, [Edgaras Ulanovas](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/en/euroleague/players/edgaras-ulanovas/002329/) inbounded the ball from the sideline and found the towering Dunston, who was the calmest man inside Zalgirio Arena, catching the ball, gathering himself and sending up a hook shot that dropped, leading to incredible scenes among everyone of a Zalgiris persuasion – the players, coaching staff, the fans in the stands, and the many fans watching on from their homes.

“The EuroLeague is always like this,” Francisco told EuroLeague TV. “(…) It was tough, but we made it. \[Dunston’s shot\] was amazing. I know that’s his magical hook, he barely works on that, but it went in so I’m really glad.”

Zalgiris, which has started 5-1 for just the fourth time in the EuroLeague and the first time since 2020-21, next faces AS Monaco, meaning that Donatas Motiejunas will return to his hometown of Kaunas. There will be no time for sentiment, though, as Coach Trinchieri’s new recruits prepare for another battle and the chance to show why Zalgiris means business this season.

Juancho Hernangomez had another fantastic game as Panathinaikos AKTOR Athens beat LDLC ASVEL Villeurbanne 92-68 at home in Round 6.

[Panathinaikos AKTOR Athens](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/en/euroleague/teams/panathinaikos-bc-athens/roster/pan/?season=2024-25) did not have much trouble as it routed [LDLC ASVEL Villeurbanne](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/en/euroleague/teams/ldlc-asvel-villeurbanne/roster/asv/?season=2024-25) [92-68](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/en/euroleague/news/panathinaikos-thrashes-asvel-92-68/) at home in Round 6 and [Juancho Hernangomez](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/en/euroleague/players/juancho-hernangomez/012712/) confirmed his good form, too. 

Hernangomez stepped up early, leading Panathinaikos's furious start. The Greens made their first eight shots, while compiling 5 rebounds, 6 assists and 0 turnovers to build an 18-5 lead. Hernangomez played a big factor in that opening run, which allowed Panathinaikos to control the game from start to finish. 

He had a left-handed dunk, fed Kendrick Nunn for a three-pointer, made his own shot from downtown, added another basket and grabbed 3 rebounds, all in the opening 5 minutes of the game.

Hernangomez rested for much of the game after that and ended up playing less than 17 minutes. He still filled his stat line with great numbers: 13 points, no missed shots, 5 rebounds, a career-high 4 assists, 1 steal and 2 fouls drawn for a PIR of 24, one shy of his career-best effort against [Olympiacos Piraeus](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/en/euroleague/teams/olympiacos-piraeus/roster/oly/) on [October 6, 2023](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/en/euroleague/game-center/2023-24/panathinaikos-aktor-athens-olympiacos-piraeus/E2023/7/#info). That was his first-ever EuroLeague game, too.

"That's the most important thing: we won and go to the next one, we have to be ready in two days. We have a tough game in Serbia and let's get ready for that," Hernangomez said before being asked about his improved performances this season. "You just need to adapt. Basketball here is way different than in the NBA and I have been there for seven years. I had to adapt and fight, that's what I have been doing all my life.

Hernangomez, indeed, has improved all of his numbers from one season to the next. Last season, he averaged 4.3 points on 26.4% three-point shooting, 3.5 rebounds and 0.5 assists for a PIR of 5.8. Hernangomez has boosted those numbers to 10.5 points on 61.1% three-point shooting, 4.8 rebounds and 1.3 assists for a PIR of 14.3.

He is set to keep adjusting and fighting in two upcoming, very physical games, against Crvena Zvezda Meridianbet Belgrade on Friday and in the Greek Derby against Olympiacos Piraeus at OAKA Altion in Round 8.

Lorenzo Brown paced the winners with 17 points. Kendrick Nunn added 14, Juancho Hernangomez had 13 and Omer Yurtseven 10 for Panathinaikos. Edwin Jackson led ASVEL with 13 points. Shaquille Harrison tallied 12 points, 4 assists and 4 steals and Neal Sako also scored 12 for the visitors.

Nunn hit a jumper, fed Yurtseven for an alley-oop slam and followed Hernangomez's dunk with a three-pointer that capped a 9-1 Panathinaikos run. Hernangomez bettered Sako's jumper with a triple. Yurtseven followed a dunk with a jump hook, which caused ASVEL to call timeout at 16-5. After Hernangomez scored again, Harrison answered with a driving layup and Sako's layup got ASVEL closer, 18-9. Cedi Osman hit an off-balance shot and Brown added a three-pointer to make it 23-9. Tarik Black dunked and Melvin Ajinca improved on Hernangomez's layup with a three-pointer. Brown's electric driving layup gave the Greens a 27-14 lead after 10 minutes.

Mbaye Ndiaye scored around the basket early in the second quarter. Mathias Lessort answered with a finger-roll layup. Jackson and Ndiaye got ASVEL within 30-20. Konstantinos Mitoglou took over with a fastbreak layup that Charles Kahudi improved on with a three-pointer. Brown answered from beyond the arc and added a put-back slam for a 38-23 Panathinaikos lead. After Sako and Nunn traded layups, Harrison's fastbreak basket got ASVEL within 40-27. Nunn immediately struck from downtown and Yurtseven dunked again. Sako banked in a jump hook that fixed the halftime score at 45-29.

Jerian Grant nailed a jumper soon after the break. Sako answered with a jump hook that Nunn matched with a jumper. Lessort scored around the basket, Harrison copied him at the other end and Lessort's put-back dunk made it a 15-point game, 53-38. Brown ignited the crowd with his second put-back slam of the night and erased Admiral Schofield's triple with his own shot from beyond the arc. Nunn added a fastbreak slam that broke the game open, 60-41. Harrison buried a floater and Black scored in traffic to bring ASVEL within 61-48. Mitoglou hit a jump hook and added a tip-in, Kostas Sloukas added a three-pointer and Lessort dunked to keep Panathinaikos way ahead, 70-52, through three quarters.

Sloukas fired in his second three-pointer early in the fourth quarter and matched Jackson's fallaway jumper with a floater that gave Panathinaikos a 75-54 lead. Schofield struck from beyond the arc and Jackson added a driving layup to bring ASVEL a bit closer, 77-59, with over 6 minutes left. Hernangomez downed a baseline jumper, fed Brown for a fastbreak layup and banked in an off-balance shot to boost the Greens' lead to 83-59. Jackson scored again and Kostas Antetokounmpo ignited the crowd with a wild dunk in traffic. Panathinaikos had no trouble to control the game in the final minutes and cruise to a well-deserved victory.

Zalgiris Kaunas has the joint-best record in the Turkish Airlines EuroLeague at 5-1 after beating Crvena Zvezda Meridianbet Belgrade 86-84 in Round 6, with Bryant Dunston becoming the hero after scoring the game-winning basket for the Lithuanian side. With this defeat, Crvena Zvezda dropped to a 3-3 record.

Deividas Sirvydis scored 14 of his game-high – and career-high – 17 points in the first half, with Zalgiris teammates Sylvain Francisco netting 15 and Alen Smailagic adding 14. For Crvena Zvezda, Codi Miller-McIntyre and Uros Plavsic had 16 points, which is a career-best mark for the center. Nemanja Nedovic also finished with 15 points.

Miller-McIntyre had a hot start to the game, scoring 5 early points, but back-to-back three-pointers by Brady Manek gave Zalgiris an 11-8 lead. When Dunston stole the ball from Nedovic and dished to Dovydas Giedraitis for a layup, making it 15-12, the roof almost came off Zalgirio Arena. In the closing stages of the first period, Sirvydis started to catch fire, scoring a triple off an out-of-bounds play and getting the shooter’s role on another three-pointer to put Zalgiris 24-16 ahead, with the score 24-18 after 10 minutes.

Despite Crvena Zvezda cutting the gap to two points, 24-22, after scores by Isaiah Canaan and Dejan Davidovac, Zalgiris quickly punched back through Smailagic or Francisco, who combined to help the hosts open the game’s largest lead at 33-24. It became a double-digit game when Dunston scored a tip-in, and Sirvydis scored 7 points in the final 3:28 of the quarter to help Zalgiris pull away and hold a 47-33 edge at the halftime interval.

The start of the third quarter saw Miller-McIntyre and Nedovic look to bring Crvena Zvezda back into the game, reducing the gap to 48-43. Francisco was leaving his fingerprints all over the game for Zalgiris, scoring layups and getting to the line, but the visitors were starting to get Plavsic more involved inside, which was paying off. Still, a layup by Sirvydis – off an assist from the Frenchman – and a three-pointer by Francisco in the final minute reopened a double-digit margin, 66-55. Nedovic’s floater on the run made it 66-57 entering the final frame.

Nedovic, Plavsic and Nikola Kalinic combined to help Crvena Zvezda go on a 2-9 run to make it 68-66. Smailagic, another Serbian but wearing the jersey of Zalgiris, got his team back on the board with a layup in which he caught Kalinic in the face, but it was deemed that it was part of his natural motion. Although he missed the and-one, he grabbed the offensive rebound and dunked, giving him 4 points in a hurry, 72-66. Canaan then scored 5 points in 23 seconds to make it 74-71, but Francisco and Arnas Butkevicius gave Zalgiris breathing room again, 78-71. Plavsic became key for the Serbian side down the stretch, scoring 7 points in some crucial moments as Crvena Zvezda levelled it at 79-79. 

Plavsic then got to 9 fourth-quarter points with 13 seconds to go, 82-81, but Francisco’s 2 free throws made it a three-point ballgame, 84-81, with 11 seconds to go. Miller-McIntyre stunned the home crowd with a triple that set an 84-84 score, but Dunston’s one-handed desperation shot dropped, sending the home fans into raptures and wrapping up an 86-84 win.

The game went down to the wire, with plenty of drama involved 

The action continues to heat up with Round 6 of the EuroLeague.

Baskonia never trailed after opening the second quarter with a 12-0 run, but Milan did come back from a double-digit deficit to tie the game at 74-74. However, from that point, Trent Forrest scored 12 consecutive Baskonia points, keeping the hosts in front, as they finally prevailed. Forrest finished with 22 points and 5 rebounds. On the other end, Nikola Mirotic had 21 points on 6-of-9 three-point shooting.

Olympiacos BC made quite the statement on Tuesday night by beating Real Madrid in the EuroLeague, and star forward Sasha Vezenkov is excited about what awaits the Reds as they continue to build more chemistry.

Olympiacos continues its process of turning a talented group into a team

Should [Olympiacos Piraeus](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/en/euroleague/teams/olympiacos-piraeus/oly/) have lost at home against [Real Madrid](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/en/euroleague/teams/real-madrid/mad/), it would have been coach Georgios Bartzokas’s slowest start to a campaign in his eight seasons across two spells in charge of the Greek side. On Tuesday night, his players ensured that would not be the case.

The arrivals of several talented players over the summer allowed Olympiacos to put together a star-studded roster that may have raised expectations in Piraeus. Yet, it’s teams – and not individuals – who achieve wins and titles.

Olympiacos came into the Rivalry Series duel against Real Madrid following two straight road losses at Anadolu Efes Istanbul and FC Bayern Munich that saw the Reds drop to a 2-3 record.

“As we said after the two losses at Efes and Bayern, we are good players, we just need to become a good team,” [Sasha Vezenkov](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/euroleague/players/sasha-vezenkov/003469/), who netted a game-high 23 points against Real Madrid, told EuroLeague TV. “Everybody has to sacrifice. Everybody has to put his body in the battle, and I think that this is what we did today.”

The process of turning a group of individuals into a team might be long and burdensome. Mistakes will be made and games will be lost on the way. After all, Olympiacos squandered double-digit leads at both Efes and Bayern before suffering a home loss in the domestic-league derby against Panathinaikos AKTOR Athens last Sunday night.

But as [Shaq McKissic](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/euroleague/players/shaquielle-mckissic/007853/) noted [after the 79-69 victory over Real Madrid](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/en/euroleague/news/olympiacos-beats-real-madrid-79-69-in-rivalry-series-clash/), communication and making sure that everyone is on the same page could produce magic on the court.

“We had a long meeting after the derby game just about believing in each other and just about having fun,” McKissic, who paired his 15 points with 9 rebounds, said to EuroLeague TV. “We were encouraging each other, there were no down faces and you can contribute that to the win.”

Indeed, Olympiacos looked focused on the court, especially when it came to protecting the boards. Coming into Tuesday’s clash, the Reds ranked 16th in total rebounds with just 31.0 per game. Meanwhile, Real Madrid recorded 26.0 defensive rebounds – the fourth-most in the EuroLeague. Yet, this time it was Olympiacos who dominated inside and outrebounded *Los Blancos* 43-31, allowing Real Madrid just 4 offensive rebounds compared to the 15 recorded by the hosts.

“We lost at the end, in the fourth quarter, probably because we lost the battle of the defensive rebounds,” Real Madrid head coach Chus Mateo said in the post-game press conference. “They got many more shots. On two-pointers, they took 41 shots and we only took 24.”

In the fourth quarters of the losses at Fenerbahce Beko Istanbul, Efes and Bayern, Olympiacos was outscored 25-15, 26-19 and 25-19, respectively. After 30 minutes, the Reds trailed by one point at Fenerbahce and led by five and two, respectively, against Efes and Bayern. When the game heads into the closing quarter, chemistry will undoubtedly play a key role down the road.

To achieve cohesion, Olympiacos will need to turn its talented group of individuals into a team. And as Vezenkov pointed out after the clash against Real Madrid, this win is a solid step in the right direction.
