Monaco's defensive aces rose to the occasion on an off night for Mike James

Much was expected ahead of AS Monaco’s Game 4 clash at Fenerbahce Beko Istanbul on Friday night, with Sasa Obradovic’s squad on the brink of exiting the Turkish Airlines EuroLeague Playoffs. Star guard [Mike James](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/euroleague/players/mike-james/005985/) had been relatively quiet by his lofty standards through the first three games, but the platform was there for the 33-year-old to become the hero.

In the end, though, it was Monaco's defensive aces who got the job done as [the Monegasques grabbed a 62-65 win in Istanbul](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/en/euroleague/news/monaco-defeats-fenerbahce-62-65-in-game-4-to-tie-the-series/), limiting Fenerbahce to its lowest-ever points total in a playoff game. James, meanwhile, was held to just 10 points, his joint second-lowest score this season, although he did hit a crucial three-pointer to put Monaco 57-61 ahead with his first make of the second half. He also dished the assist – his third of the night – for [Donta Hall](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/euroleague/players/donta-hall/011196/) as the athletic center dunked in the open floor to restore Monaco’s four-point advantage, 59-63.

### Staying above water with defense

Going all the way back to the first quarter, it became quite apparent that the high scoring from Games 1, 2 and 3 was not going to continue in Game 4. Fenerbahce held a 15-11 lead at the end of the first 10 minutes, then 33-30 at halftime. [Elie Okobo](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/euroleague/players/elie-okobo/011212/) (11 points) and James (7) combined for 60% of Monaco’s first-half points, but it was hardly a vintage display by Coach Obradovic’s men. After all, Monaco had shot 11 for 32 from the floor (34.4%), including 2 for 9 from three-point land (22.2% 3FG), and had dished just 2 assists.

Still, the gap was just three points and there was plenty of room for improvement. One big positive is that Monaco had managed to cope with the absence of Defensive Player of the Year candidate [John Brown](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/euroleague/players/john-brown/010588/) to injury, with [Alpha Diallo](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/en/euroleague/players/alpha-diallo/011226/), [Jaron Blossomgame](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/euroleague/players/jaron-blossomgame/011231/) and [Yakuba Ouattara](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/en/euroleague/players/yakuba-ouattara/004197/) all dialing up their energy levels a notch. On that end of the floor, there wasn’t too much that needed changing.

### Better ball movement and big plays

There were three-pointers galore at the start of the third, with Fenerbahce knocking down 3 and [Jordan Loyd](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/euroleague/players/jordan-loyd/009754/) hitting 2 in quick succession to prevent the hosts from pulling away. Monaco would go on to hit a further 2 triples in the third quarter, as well as going 3 for 9 from two-point range, to take a 47-48 lead into the final period. For a Fenerbahce team that leans so heavily on its offensive capabilities, Monaco was making the Turkish side play at the pace it wanted to play at.

The chess match continued in the fourth period, but in the end James and Hall saw Monaco over the line. It was rather poignant how Hall’s big block on one end was followed by James’s triple down the other – defense had laid the foundation for the Monegasques to go and grab the win.

Speaking to EuroLeague TV afterward, Monaco boss Sasa Obradovic was pleased with his team’s ball movement after the break – the visitors finished with 12 assists, 10 of which came in the second half – and how his players had defended throughout the 40 minutes.

“It’s also about this, sharing the ball,” Coach Obradovic said. “We played offensively smarter. Defensively, we were consistent the whole game. That’s what gave them, a team that is great offensively, 60-something points. We did an amazing defensive job.

“I knew there were going to be two games \[in Istanbul\] and to attack the second one \[Game 4\] more. I was also preparing myself for this, changing the lineups a bit, and that gave us a lot of benefits. We completely deserved this win.”

On a night when James was expected to add to his MVP case with a starring performance, it was Monaco’s defensive stars who really shined. The likes of Diallo, Blossomgame and Ouattara may pass the casual fan by, but they are the glue that holds the team together and the ones who can swing a game. ### Nunn poured in 52 points for Greens over two games

Panathinaikos AKTOR Athens guard [Kendrick Nunn](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/en/euroleague/players/kendrick-nunn/012774/) is living up to his billing as [the second-best average scorer (17.5) and top one in total points (70)](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/euroleague/stats/key-stats-players/?size=25&misc=&seasonCode=E2023&category=Score&seasonMode=Single&sortDirection=descending&aggregate=accumulated&phase=PO) in the playoffs. He amassed 52 of those in Game 3 and Game 4. Nunn downed 5 triples among his game-high 25 points and helped Panathinaikos rally late in an ultimately futile 85-83 loss to Maccabi. Two nights later, with his team's season on the line, Nunn was even better, pouring in 27 points to help another late comeback, this time good for an 88-95 victory. That effort tied the series and sent Panathinaikos and Maccabi to a Game 5 next Tuesday in Athens.

### Petrusev gave Olympiacos another weapon

In an Olympiacos Piraeus frontcourt that is crowded with stars, the versatile [Filip Petrusev](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/en/euroleague/players/filip-petrusev/011194/) certainly made his presence felt in the second week of the playoffs. In Game 4, he posted season highs 18 points, 19 PIR and 30 minutes played, although it wasn't enough to stop FC Barcelona from escaping with an 80-82 road win in overtime. He spent less time on-court as Olympiacos blew out Barca 92-58, but still collected 10 points, 5 rebounds and 11 PIR in just over 17 minutes. All told, [Petrusev is averaging 14.8 PIR, tied for 10th-best in the playoffs](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/euroleague/stats/key-stats-players/?size=25&misc=&seasonCode=E2023&category=Valuation&seasonMode=Single&sortDirection=descending&aggregate=perGame&phase=PO), which prorates to 28.5 per 40 minutes, which is ninth-best.

### Maccabi relied on Blatt's playmaking

Another young player making his mark in Game 3 and Game 4 was [Tamir Blatt](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/en/euroleague/players/tamir-blatt/011193/) of Maccabi Playtika Tel Aviv. Taking on extra responsibility in the absence of injured backcourt mate Wade Baldwin, Blatt had 13 assists over the two games. He dished 6 in Game 3 as Maccabi edged Panathinaikos 85-83 and another 7 -- as well as 14 points and 5 rebounds -- in Game 4, although the Greens were able to even the series with an 88-95 road win. Despite losing in Game 4 to AS Monaco Basket, Fenerbahçe Beko Istanbul center Georgios Papagiannis impressed once again.

Fenerbahce Beko Istanbul suffered [a 62-65 home defeat against AS Monaco](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/en/euroleague/news/monaco-defeats-fenerbahce-62-65-in-game-4-to-tie-the-series/) at Ulker Sports and Event Hall in Game 4 of their playoff series. Yet, the good news is that center [Georgios Papagiannis](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/en/euroleague/players/georgios-papagiannis/005844/) had another great performance. 

The 26-year-old Papagiannis joined Fenerbahce last summer after six Turkish Airlines EuroLeague seasons with Panathinaikos AKTOR Athens. He was named to the 2021-22 All-EuroLeague Second Team, averaging 10.3 points, 8.2 blocks and leading that season in blocks (1.7 bpg.).

At Fenerbahce, however, it wasn't all plain sailing as Papagiannis struggled in his new role as a backup center. Even though he shot the ball with superb percentages (64.8% 2FG, 54.8% 3FG), Papagiannis only averaged 5.6 points, 2.7 rebounds and 0.8 blocks in less than 16 minutes per night in 31 regular-season games. "Big Papa" had only scored in double digits once in his last 15 regular-season appearances.

[Johnathan Motley](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/euroleague/players/johnathan-motley/011157/)'s injury gave Papagiannis the chance to see extended playing time in the playoffs – and he is making the most out of it, gradually playing better and better. 

In Fenerbahce's Game 2 triumph in Monaco, Papagiannis had 6 points, 6 rebounds and a career-high 5 assists, amassing a PIR of 14. In Game 3, Papagiannis posted 8 points and 6 rebounds, balancing his team's offense in an impressive win.

With greater confidence and improved numbers, Papagiannis had his first double-double of the season – and his first all-time in the playoffs – in Game 4, getting 10 points and 11 rebounds in a season-high 32 minutes on the floor. He helped his team with a couple of tip-ins, a dunk, a three-pointer, 4 offensive boards, 1 assist, 1 block and 4 four drawn. 

His playoff numbers are significantly better as Papagiannis is averaging 7.0 points on 80.0% two-point shooting, 6.5 rebounds, 2.0 assists and 0.8 blocks, good for a PIR average of 12.5.

Papagiannis has given Fenerbahce head coach Saras Jasikevicius a solid option at the center position. Even if Motley remains sidelined, Papagiannis has made sure that Fenerbahce had a strong, effective presence under the boards as he splits playing time with former EuroLeague champion Sertac Sanli.

Donta Hall stepped up for AS Monaco Basket as it defeated Fenerbahçe Beko Istanbul in Game 4 to set up a Game 5 in the principality next week.

[Donta Hall](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/euroleague/players/donta-hall/011196/) made the difference at both ends down the stretch. 

It had been a tough series for Hall until now, seeing very limited playing time. In the previous three games, Hall stepped on the court for less than 19 minutes combined, averaging 1.7 points, 1.0 rebounds, no blocks and a PIR of 2.3. Hall saw extended playing time in Game 4 but wasn't making things happen, remaining scoreless midway through the fourth quarter.

### Donta Hall became the hero

With the game on the line, Hall stepped up to make the difference. His first basket, a put-back slam, gave Monaco a 52-56 lead with under 4 minutes left. Fenerbahce got within 57-58 and had the ball with over a minute left when Hall had a huge block on [Marko Guduric](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/euroleague/players/marko-guduric/004004/). His defensive stop allowed [Mike James](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/euroleague/players/mike-james/005985/) to bury his only three-pointer of the night at the other end.

Hall went on to dunk twice in the final minute. The second one came with 0.2 seconds left, sealing Monaco's victory in style.

Hall finished the game with 6 points, 8 rebounds, an assist, 2 steals, 2 blocks and 2 fouls drawn for a PIR of 13. Above all, he made the difference in a close game, helping Monaco consolidate its great defensive effort.

"It was a tough game. Coming in here, we knew it was going to be a tough game," Hall told EuroLeague TV afterward. "We knew we had to come out and fight. It's another one more game left. We just got to keep competing. 

"Throughout the game, you are going to have your ups and downs regardless, but you have to maintain that energy, that effort, that fight. We were pretty solid."

Monaco hosts Fenerbahce in Game 5 on Wednesday, May 8 at 19:00 CEST.

"It's going to be a tough Game 5," Hall added. "We know they are coming to fight and we are coming to fight as well."

AS Monaco survived a do-or-die situation by downing Fenerbahce Beko Istanbul 62-65 in Game 4 of their best-of-five series at Ulker Sports and Event Hall on Friday night. The series is now tied at 2-2 and Monaco hosts Game 5 at Salle Gaston Medecin next Wednesday.

Elie Okobo led the winners with 13 points. Mike James and Donatas Motiejunas each had 10, and Donta Hall netted all 6 of his points in the final 4 minutes for Monaco. Marko Guduric paced Fenerbahce with 14 points. Scottie Wilbekin added 11 while Georgios Papagiannis and Nigel Hayes-Davis each had 10. Papagiannis added 11 rebounds for a double-double.

### Hayes-Davis put Fener in charge

Motiejunas got Monaco going with a dunk, which James followed with a jumper for a 0-4 lead. Hayes-Davis and Dyshawn Pierre each scored in the low post, Tyler Dorsey took over with a power layup, then Hayes-Davis and Wilbekin each struck from downtown to cap a 12-0 Fenerbahce run. James tried to change things for Monaco and Jaron Blossomgame's put-back basket got the guests within 12-9. Hayes-Davis kept pacing Fenerbahce and Marko Guduric soon restored a 15-9 lead. James scored again to fix the score at 15-11 after 10 minutes.

### Okobo kept Monaco close

Motiejunas sank a jump hook early in the second quarter, which Wilbekin bettered with a corner triple for an 18-13 Fenerbahce lead. Guduric joined the three-point shootout, James nailed a jumper off a timeout and Motiejunas's close basket gave Monaco hope at 21-17. Guduric insisted from beyond the arc, Okobo buried a turnaround jumper and Alpha Diallo got the guests even closer, 24-21. Diallo bettered Pierre's fast-break layup with a bomb from beyond the arc. Papagiannis followed a dunk with a tip-in but Okobo single-handedly tied the game, 30-30. Papagiannis's layup-plus-foul made Fenerbahce regain a 33-30 lead at halftime.

### Monaco took the lead!

Wilbekin and Jordan Loyd traded three-pointers immediately after the break. Hayes-Davis also struck from downtown for a 39-33 score. Loyd insisted from beyond the arc and Nick Calathes also buried a triple. Jaron Blossomgame took over with a put-back slam and Yakuba Ouattara added a fast-break dunk and a three-pointer that completed Monaco's comeback, 42-43. Calathes banked in a one-handed floater that Motiejunas improved with a bomb from downtown. Blossomgame scored in the low post, then Papagiannis hit a triple that fixed the score at 47-48 after 30 minutes.

### Down to the wire!

Guduric scored in penetration early in the fourth quarter and Tarik Biberovic added a three-pointer to make Monaco call a timeout at 52-49. Diallo struck from beyond the arc which Okobo followed with a fadeaway jumper that restored a 52-54 Monaco lead with over 4 minutes left. Hall took over with a wild put-back slam, then Calathes brought Fenerbahce within 55-56. Loyd and Guduric traded baskets, then James's three-pointer forced Fenerbahce to stop the game at 57-61 with 57.3 seconds left. Wilbekin made free throws and Guduric bettered Hall's dunk with a three-pointer for a 62-63 score with 21.7 seconds remaining. A five-second violation gave Fenerbahce the ball back but Wilbekin missed a floater and Hall fixed the final score with a dunk with 0.2 seconds left, allowing Monaco to celebrate an incredible road win.

In a do-or-die situation, Monaco edged Fenerbahce 62-65 to tie the best-of-five series at 2-2 and send the series back to the principality for Game 5 -- the third in this season's playoffs! Fenerbahce led 33-30 at halftime, then Jordan Loyd and Yakuba Ouattara allowed Monaco to get a 47-48 lead after 30 minutes. Down the stretch, Donta Hall dunked twice and had a good-as-gold block, Mike James buried a critical three-pointer, and Scottie Wilbekin missed a potential go-ahead shot down the stretch, which allowed Hall to seal the deal with a dunk. Elie Okobo led the winners with 13 points. It will all come down to Game 5 in Monaco.

Olympiacos trailed Barcelona 21-23 after one quarter but took a 53-47 lead into the halftime break and had a 72-47 edge after three quarters. A slow start to the last quarter saw the two teams go scoreless for 2 minutes before Shaq McKissic nailed a triple, 75-47. Nikola Kalinic and Filip Petrusev traded baskets before a McKissic layup gave Olympiacos an 81-50 lead. Nigel Williams-Goss netted a triple, but Barcelona responded with two James Nnaji buckets from inside to trim the deficit to 84-54. Yet, Olympiacos wouldn’t take the foot off the gas, with McKissic completing a three-point play and Canaan netting a triple to finish it off, 90-54. McKissic led all scorers with 21 points, while Parker paced Barcelona with 10 points.

Maccabi held a 29-26 lead after the first quarter and 50-49 at halftime, but Panathinaikos had a strong close to the third quarter and took a 69-74 edge into the final quarter. Down the stretch, Kendrick Nunn and Kostas Sloukas saw the Greens get over the line as they came away with an 88-95 win to force a Game 5 back at OAKA next week. Nunn paced Panathinaikos with a game-high 27 points, Sloukas had 20 points, Mathias Lessort netted 17, and Dinos Mitoglou scored 13. Lorenzo Brown had 17 points for Maccabi, with Tamir Blatt and Bonzie Colson adding 14 apiece, Josh Nebo netting 12 and John DiBartomeo scoring 10.
