The final round of the 2023-24 Turkish Airlines EuroLeague Regular Season saw three players lead their respective teams to victories, each accumulating PIR of 27 and sharing the honor of being the MVP of Round 34. 

First, [Kostas Sloukas](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/en/euroleague/players/kostas-sloukas/001926/) stepped up and led Panathinaikos AKTOR Athens to an 84-75 win over the visiting ALBA Berlin, which guaranteed the Greens a second-place finish and a secured home-court advantage in the playoffs. Sloukas paced the team to the tune of 16 points, making 2-of-3 two-pointers, 3-of-3 threes and 3-of-4 free throws while also dishing a game-high 7 assists and pulling down 4 rebounds. For the veteran point guard, it is his second MVP of the Round honor this season and the fourth such award of his career.

Then, it was [Markus Howard](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/en/euroleague/players/markus-howard/011948/) exploding with 34 points for Baskonia Vitoria-Gasteiz in a crucial come-from-behind 91-95 win at Virtus Segafredo Bologna, locking up eighth place in the standings in the process. Howard was 1 point shy of his career high, hitting 6-of-9 twos, 5-of-13 threes and 7-of-8 free throws while dishing 3 assists and drawing 7 fouls. For Howard, this is his first career MVP of the Round honor.

Finally, [James Nunnally](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/en/euroleague/players/james-nunnally/007400/) led Partizan Mozzart Bet Belgrade to a 79-66 win over Valencia Basket in his team’s season finale. Nunnally had a game-high 19 points, making 4-of-4 two-pointers, 2-of-4 three-pointers and 4-of-4 free throws. He also had 4 assists, 2 rebounds and drew 6 fouls. It is Nunnally's second such award, with the first coming in the 2021-22 season.

The next best mark in this final round belongs to Partizan's [Jaleen Smith](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/en/euroleague/players/jaleen-smith/011192/) and [Isaiah Canaan](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/en/euroleague/players/isaiah-canaan/010612/) of Olympiacos Piraeus, both of whom had a PIR of 26. Smith amassed 15 points on 5-of-6 three-point shooting, 5 rebounds, 4 steals and 2 assists. Canaan netted 27 points on 3-of-3 two-pointers and 5-of-7 triples in an 84-81 win over Fenerbahce Beko Istanbul.

Baskonia secured the eighth seed in the EuroLeague Playoffs after another stellar performance by Markus Howard, this time in a win at Virtus Bologna.

Baskonia Vitoria-Gasteiz emerged as the big winner on Friday night, pulling out [a thrilling 91-95 road win at Virtus Segafredo Bologna](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/en/euroleague/news/live-blog-virtus-bologna-vs-baskonia/). 

With this victory, Baskonia clinched eighth place, which gives the team two chances in the Play-In Showdown to get one win and reach the playoffs. Virtus, on the other hand, dropped to 10th place in the standings and will need to win twice – on the road – to get into the playoffs.

### Markus Howard stayed on fire

That's how big of a win it was, and it had one major star – [Markus Howard](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/euroleague/players/markus-howard/011948/) – and several key contributors that made Baskonia's win possible.

Howard scored 21 of his 34 points in the second half, including 11 in the fourth quarter, and the visitors needed all of those because they were down 13 late in the second quarter and trailed by double digits in the third.

Yet, Baskonia ended up coming away as the winner. If that 91-95 score looks familiar, that's because [Baskonia beat Real Madrid at WiZink Center](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/en/euroleague/news/live-blog-real-madrid-baloncesto-vs-baskonia-vitoria-gasteiz/) last week by the exact same result. That night, Howard erupted for a joint career-high 35 points.

So, could there be something in those numbers? Probably not in any kind of supernatural way, but it is clear that Baskonia wanted a high-scoring game – and got it.

"We wanted to play fast and in the second half we played fast," Baskonia head coach Dusko Ivanovic explained. "But sometimes, \[we played\] too fast where we lost two or three balls. But I think we deserved to win this game."

Baskonia scored 31 points in the third quarter, which it won 21-31, and it outscored the hosts 38-51 after halftime.

Virtus boss Luca Banchi summed it up perfectly.

"It was difficult to stop their offense," he said. "We struggled and lost our focus in the game."

### Other players made decisive plays, too

Howard scored the first 8 points of the third quarter to quickly erase a nine-point halftime deficit. But when Virtus pulled away to a 10-point margin once again, 64-54, it was [Codi Miller-McIntyre](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/euroleague/players/codi-miller-mcintyre/009048/) who scored 8 straight points – and 10 in a span of only two and a half minutes – to put Baskonia up 67-69.

The hosts never led after that, but the game was incredibly close. Another run of points by Howard put the visitors ahead 83-90, their largest lead of the night, with 3:57 left in the game, but Virtus replied with a 7-0 run and entering the final minute had a possession to retake the lead.

But Baskonia made another defensive stop, one of many in the second half, then got the game-winning basket – a tip-in by [Matt Costello](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/euroleague/players/matthew-costello/010444/) with 32 seconds to go.

Costello had just 6 points, but not only did he made that tip-in, he made both free throws with 16.6 seconds to go to set a 91-94 score. He also came up big by pulling down 9 rebounds, dishing 4 assists, recording 2 steals and having 1 block.

Other major contributors for Baskonia were [Vanja Marinkovic](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/euroleague/players/vanja-marinkovic/004761/), who finished with 17 points, and [Chima Moneke](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/euroleague/players/chima-moneke/012201/), who scored 11 of his 12 in the first half. He sat out the majority of the second half, but one has to wonder if Baskonia would have been able to overcome the deficit without Moneke, who had a pair of three-point plays in the final minute of the first half and was the sole reason Baskonia was down by 9 at halftime, rather than 13 or more points.

But, when Moneke was asked what made the difference, he had no doubt.

"Markus Howard, the best scorer in Europe," Moneke stated, praising his teammate who finished as the EuroLeague's top scorer with 19.4 points per game. "Everyone's talking about a few names, but no one is talking about him. The things he does on the court, nobody does it in the world."

Howard, who made 6-of-9 two-pointers and 5-of-13 threes, will be a major threat in the Play-In Showdown against Maccabi Playtika Tel Aviv. After all, Friday night was his fifth game of 30 points or more this season and his fourth in 2024.

"We are excited, we are still continuing to fight and we are playing for something," Howard said after his performance in Bologna. "To have the opportunity to play in the postseason, we are excited and ready to play."

LDLC ASVEL Villeurbanne showed it can beat great teams too as it finished its Turkish Airlines EuroLeague campaign with [a 76-72 victory over FC Barcelona](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/en/euroleague/news/live-blog-ldlc-asvel-vs-fc-barcelona/), thanks in large part to its twin tower duo of [Joffrey Lauvergne](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/euroleague/players/joffrey-lauvergne/004194/) and [Youssoupha Fall](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/euroleague/players/youssoupha-fall/006568/).

Lauvergne led the way with 20 points and 5 rebounds and Fall tallied 15 points and 8 rebounds for ASVEL, which ended the season with a 9-25 record.

“We played well. It is crazy to have two guys like this. It’s unusual in modern basketball, but I enjoy it. \[Fall\] also had a huge game tonight,” said Lauvergne.

ASVEL are enjoying a positive end to an otherwise disappointing campaign, producing its biggest win to date by thrashing Valencia behind Joffrey Lauvergne's 21, whereas Barca wish to control the tempo through its tandem of big men, Jan Vesely and Willy Hernangomez to bolster their championship-credentials.

This was actually the biggest scoring game for Fall and Lauvergne this season, while it was the seventh time that both big men had scored in double figures, having previously done so in Rounds 5, 6, 11, 14, 29 and 31.

Round 11 was also against Barcelona – at Palau Blaugrana, to be precise – and had been the duo’s previous top combined scoring output. That night, Lauvergne had 17 points, 5 rebounds and 3 assists and Fall picked up 15 points, 7 rebounds and 1 assists.

“\[Barcelona\] is a great team We did our best to finish the season the best way we could. It wasn’t easy, so we are all happy right now,” Fall commented.

The big men helped ASVEL win back-to-back games for just the second time this season, with the last occasion coming in Rounds 19 and 20. 

“The gym was full – 12,000 people – so it was a great feeling. We played against one of the best teams in Europe,” Lauvergne added. “We knew we had nothing to play for in this game, but we knew the more games we win the happier people would be. We are really happy.”

Coach Pierric Poupet was also happy for his players, with the coach going 6-9 in his 15 games in charge.

“I am happy that we ended this EuroLeague season with a win in front of 12,000 people,” he stated. “The team deserves it and so do the fans that came out. We came back in the second half with the same fighting spirit and that helped us.”

So did having Lauvergne and Fall, ASVEL’s twin towers, come to the fore.

Despite knowing postseason basketball was beyond its reach, KK Partizan's fans packed out Belgrade Arena for the last game of the EuroLeague season against Valencia Basket.

Still, a capacity 20,000 crowd turned up to give Partizan an emotional send-off as far as the EuroLeague season is concerned and the home team responded with a rock-solid performance, which left many of them wondering what might have been.

Valencia embark on a new chapter following the dismissal of Head Coach Alex Mumbru and Albert Oliver brought into the role as a replacement. They journey to a Partizan group that must prevail if they're to claim any chance of qualifying for postseason action and may rely on Kevin Punter for inspiration.

Head coach Zeljko Obradovic, who was given yet another standing ovation by the fans, acknowledged there would be many regrets in the locker room following a patchy campaign in which Partizan at one point looked set for a postseason berth after a 9-6 start.

“It’s not easy to play a game in which the result is not important, but in front of this incredible crowd you have to give everything and the players understand that,” Obradovic said in his post-game comments.

“We now have a bit of time to reflect on our season in the EuroLeague and I believe that we missed out on a great opportunity to be in the top eight teams.

“We can improve in many departments but we will carry on with undiminished desire to succeed. There is more to it than just success on the court here, though, as it’s all about these incredible fans who supported us through the thick and thin.

“I am proud and privileged to have the support of this crowd and their undying appreciation of our efforts means added weight on our shoulders which we are happy to carry.”

Guard [Danilo Andjusic](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/euroleague/players/danilo-andjusic/000956/) was also impressed by the fan turnout. “I am at a loss of words to describe how I feel,” he said. “To have so many people show up and support us so relentlessly in what was basically a friendly matchup is incredible.”

Valencia also looked likely to snatch a postseason berth before an awful home stretch produced a 2-8 skid in the last 10 regular-season games, which cost axed head coach Alex Mumbru his job.

Canaan, who finished the game with 27 points on 8-of-10 shooting from the field, sounded confident as he looked forward to the postseason, saying: “It's all about picking up momentum towards the end of the season. It’s going to take everybody to get to our goal. 

“We had a lot of ups and downs, a lot of injuries all season long. For the first time we’ve got pretty much everybody healthy, and we wanted to close the season on a high note and take that into the playoffs.”

And although the task of facing Barca – who beat Olympiacos twice in the regular season – is far from easy, Canaan certainly isn’t ready to back down from the challenge as he added: “If you’re with us, buckle up.
