### Zalgiris triumphs in Monaco

There is a reason we call this "bold predictions", so let’s be bold! If we are being honest, Monaco has not looked great recently. It was blasted by EA7 Emporio Armani Milan in Round 30, squeaked by Valencia Basket in Round 31 and was trailing at LDLC ASVEL Villeurbanne through three quarters in Round 32 before dominating that final 10 minutes. Monaco also lost in the French League on Saturday. This is clearly not a matter of talent, but more a mindset; Monaco has all but clinched a playoff spot and has taken its foot off the gas. Its problem this week is that Zalgiris Kaunas is racing full steam ahead to reach the Play-In Showdown. The Lithuanian champs have won their last three games by double figures and will not be intimidated in Monaco. Look for more great quotes from Coach Adrea Trinchieri on Thursday when Zalgiris extends its winning streak. 

### Barca sends Maccabi to play-in

The battle to make it to the playoffs has reached Round 33, but as many as five teams will qualify by Friday night if FC Barcelona beats Maccabi Playtika Tel Aviv and both Olympiacos Piraeus and Fenerbahce Beko Istanbul get respective victories. Barca has been strong at home all season and should stop Maccabi's six-game winning streak at Palau Blaugrana. Wade Baldwin should not have it easy against two elite defensive guards like Tomas Satoransky and Ricky Rubio. Josh Nebo is in a great moment but playing against a more experienced Jan Vesely should not an easy. Jabari Parker gives Barca an edge at power forward and Nikola Kalinic is a perfect choice to stop Bonzie Colson at the small forward spot. My take is that Barca gets its 22nd win and, combined with other results, Maccabi locks seventh place at the end of this round. 

Following consecutive away losses, Barça wish to reaffirm their championship-credentials when visiting an in-form Maccabi squad that has won three of its last four. The hosts are known for offensive rebounds and the Blaugrana may need their powerhouses to protect the glass.

### ALBA plays perfect spoiler, stuns Partizan

Last week was a game ALBA players would love to erase from their collective memories, allowing the first 50-point performance in EuroLeague history to Nigel Hayes-Davis, all while getting thumped by 35 points against Fenerbahce. Stuck in the last place in the standings, ALBA wants to leave a good impression in the last EuroLeague game in front of its home fans, and welcomes Partizan, which badly needs a win to keep in the Play-In Showdown hunt. Partizan must win, but it will have to fight both an inspired and motivated ALBA, as well as its own inconsistencies. I say ALBA creates a shocker in Berlin.

### Efes takes the Istanbul Derby

One of the biggest showdowns of the season tips off the Friday segment of Round 33 when superhot Fenerbahce Beko Istanbul welcomes Anadolu Efes Istanbul for their city derby on a floor where the hosts have been all but unbeatable this season. Both teams have plenty to gain or lose in the outcome, but Efes is desperate to reach the Play-In Showdown and that ambition should have the visitors at maximum concentration on Friday. The leadership of Shane Larkin and the return to form of Will Clyburn are the basis upon which Efes can build its challenge to a Fenerbahce team that saw Nigel Hayes-Davis break the EuroLeague single-game scoring record last week with 50 points. Efes has to rebound and defend better, but this is a team on a mission right now, and with Larkin as inspiration, I believe they will come out on top.

The Turkish capital comes to a standstill for a highly-anticipated derby and the first on the European stage.for the 23/24 season. Efes look to bounce back from a loss to Baskonia despite 23 points from Shane Larkin, whilst Fenerbahce remain unbeaten under the stewardship of Sarunas Jasikevicius.

### Milan to give itself a shot at the play-in

Time is of the essence for the EuroLeague teams chasing a spot in the Play-In Showdown, and that is certainly the case for the 14-18 EA7 Emporio Armani Milan in 12th place. Ettore Messina’s side is on the outside looking in at the moment, with an 87-73 defeat at Zalgiris Kaunas in Round 32 having the potential to be fatal, but I think Milan will beat Virtus Segafredo Bologna in the Italian derby at 20:30 CEST on Friday night and enter the final round of the season with a chance to finish in 10th, the final position for the play-in. Given that Anadolu Efes Istanbul faces Fenerbahce Beko Istanbul on the road at 19:45 CEST on Friday, Milan will know the outcome of that contest before its game has come to an end, which could impact how Messina’s squad approaches the second half of its game with Virtus. There’s plenty at stake, just how we like it.

Real Madrid swingman Rudy Fernandez, a 14-season Turkish Airlines EuroLeague veteran whose love of the game and infectious play has helped define a generation, said on Thursday that his storied basketball career is coming to a close.

Real Madrid swingman [Rudy Fernandez](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/en/euroleague/players/rudy-fernandez/bmt/), a 14-season Turkish Airlines EuroLeague veteran whose love of the game and infectious play has helped define a generation, said on Thursday that his storied basketball career is coming to a close.

In a press conference on his 39th birthday, Fernandez left it clear that after first coming to the basketball world's attention more than two decades ago, fans aren't going to see him in uniform again next season.

Retirement "is a difficult word and impactful when you hear it," Fernandez said. "But it's true that I'm now arriving at a moment in my career where I believe, well, I'm at a certain age and I've had many, many years as a pro. I have felt, and continue to feel, very loved here at Real Madrid. It's clear that this is coming to a close, but I still have a few months to try to help with whatever they ask and, above all, in my time left, to enjoy my teammates."

Fernandez has lifted the EuroLeague trophy on three occasions, in 2015, 2018 and 2023. The Spanish legend is looking – along with his teammates Sergio Llull and Sergio Rodriguez –  to join Kyle Hines and Saras Jasikevicius as the only players in the modern EuroLeague era to have become a EuroLeague champion four times.

"Unfortunately, sport comes with injuries and I remember when I had my third back operation, they told me I could play three or at most four years at the professional level," Fernandez continued. "But with the work of the physical therapists of Real Madrid, I've been able to play many more years and enjoy many more successes together with my teammates. And the truth is I feel very privileged to be able to reach this point."

### A EuroLeague legend

To date, Fernandez has played 344 games in the EuroLeague, of which 325 have come with Real (2011-present) and 19 were as a Joventut Badalona player (2006-07). His career averages stand at 8.8 points, 2.8 rebounds, 2.4 assists and 1.1 steals. His 344 EuroLeague appearances are the 12th most all-time, while he is 18th all-time in scoring (3,028 points), fourth all-time in three-point makes (591), 32nd all-time in rebounds (972), 22nd all-time in assists (827), and third all-time in steals (364).

Rudy was selected as the EuroLeague Rising Star in his first year in the competition, which came with Joventut, and was later selected to the All-EuroLeague First Team in the 2012-13 and 2013-14 seasons, as well as the All-EuroLeague Second Team in the 2014-15 campaign.

In addition to his EuroLeague exploits, Fernandez also became a BKT EuroCup champion with Joventut in 2007-08, earning Finals MVP honors in the process. He made a total of 42 appearances in the competition over four seasons (2002-03, 2003-04, 2004-05, 2007-08), with career averages of 11.7 points, 3.3 rebounds, 2.5 assists, 1.9 steals.

### One of Spain’s best-ever players

Outside of the Euroleague Basketball umbrella, the Real legend is also recognized around the world for his achievements with the Spanish national team. Fernandez won two FIBA World Cup titles with La Roja, four EuroBasket trophies, two silver medals and one bronze medal at the Olympics Games.

Domestically, he has lifted six Spanish League trophies with Real, six Spanish Cups – one with Joventut (2007-08) and five with Real – and nine Spanish Super Cups, all with Real. He also became a FIBA EuroChallenge champion with Joventut in 2005-06, while he helped Real lift the FIBA Intercontinental Cup in 2014-15.

Fernandez spent four seasons in the NBA, too, playing 267 games in the association. He was named to the NBA All-Rookie Second Team in 2008-09 after an impressive rookie campaign with the Portland Trail Blazers, in which he averaged 10.4 points, 2.7 rebounds and 2.0 assists in 78 regular-season games and 7.5 points, 2.8 rebounds, 1.0 assist and 1.3 steals in six playoff games. Rudy suited up 236 times for Portland across the 2008-09, 2009-10 and 2010-11 seasons – on 218 occasions in the regular season and 18 in the playoffs – before playing 31 games for the Denver Nuggets in the 2011-12 campaign.

The three-time EuroLeague champion indicates he has a "few months" left with the club.

**Anadolu Efes Istanbul**

Ertan Gazi underwent surgery after Round 26 and is not expected to play in Round 33 at Fenerbahce.

Ridvan Oncel, Salih Altuntas, Melih Tunca, Efe Demirel and Burakcan Yildizli were unavailable in Round 32. Their status for Round 33 is unclear.

**AS Monaco**

Terry Tarpey underwent surgery on his left meniscus and will be out for six weeks until early May.

**Baskonia Vitoria-Gasteiz**

Injury information is unavailable for Baskonia in its Round 33 game at Real Madrid.

**Crvena Zvezda Meridianbet Belgrade**

Milos Teodosic, who missed Round 32 due to illness, is expected to return to action in Round 33 vs. Olympiacos.

**EA7 Emporio Armani Milan**

Kevin Pangos is out for Valencia's Round 33 clash with Valencia due to a right thigh issue.

Boubacar Toure, who missed the last two games with a back injury, will not be available for Round 33, either.

The two historic clubs come head-to-head at Palau Blaugrana

Barcelona vs. Maccabi: A must-win encounter for both teams

The 2023-24 Turkish Airlines EuroLeague Regular Season is coming towards its finale, with [FC Barcelona (21-11) hosting Maccabi Playtika Tel Aviv (19-13)](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/en/euroleague/game-center/2023-24/fc-barcelona-maccabi-playtika-tel-aviv/E2023/292/) in a crucial game for both sides in Round 33. At this point of the campaign, every win is priceless – and even more so when postseason basketball is on the line.

### Playoffs, play-in at stake

Barcelona has been in the upper echelons of the standings for the majority of the season, holding second place longer than any other squad. That said, Roger Grimau’s charges have been unable to rubber stamp a playoff spot just yet after losing three of their last six games, all of which have come against direct competitors in the race to finish in the top six: the 21-11 AS Monaco (67-77 in Round 27), the 20-12 Fenerbahce Beko Istanbul (88-74 in Round 30) and the 21-11 Panathinaikos AKTOR Athens (89-81 in Round 31).

Nevertheless, Barcelona will qualify for the playoffs if it beats Maccabi on Thursday night. Alternatively, the Spanish side will advance if either Fenerbahce or the 20-12 Olympiacos Piraeus loses, or if it loses by fewer than 14 points in regulation and Monaco wins. Plenty of possibilities!

On the other hand, Maccabi bounced back in March, becoming the only undefeated team in the EuroLeague last month. It is currently on a six-game winning streak, which has allowed Oded Kattash’s group to enter the fight for the playoffs.

A loss at Palau Blaugrana, however, would send Maccabi to the seventh place due to its tiebreak disadvantage against Olympiacos (0-2) and Fenerbahce (1-1, -30), who face each other in Round 34. Maccabi will also be locked in to seventh place if it wins by up to 13 points and Olympiacos, Fenerbahce, Monaco and Panathinaikos all win.

### Backcourt fun with Baldwin, Ricky

Maccabi's [Wade Baldwin](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/en/euroleague/players/wade-baldwin-iv/009863/) come into this game in arguably the best form of his EuroLeague career. He was just chosen as the [EuroLeague MVP for March](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/en/euroleague/news/mvp-wade-baldwin-maccabi-exclusive-interview-euroleague/), averaging 18.4 points, 4.6 assists, 4.0 rebounds, 1.4 steals and a PIR of 23.2, drawing 34 fouls in five games and being very effective from the free-throw line, going 33 for 38 (86.8% FT).

Earlier this season, Baldwin had a solid performance against Barcelona in Round 10. Despite [his team's 90-92 home loss](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/en/euroleague/game-center/2023-24/maccabi-playtika-tel-aviv-fc-barcelona/E2023/83/), Baldwin led Maccabi with 19 points and 8 assists. He is about to test his all-around offensive skills against an elite defender at a venue where he has not played particularly well in the past.

Baldwin has not often enjoyed facing Barcelona at Palau Blaugrana, having averaged 11.8 points, 2.8 rebounds, 4.5 assists and a PIR of 12.3 in four games at the home of the Blaugrana, of which three were in the EuroLeague and one was in the Spanish League. Despite that, Baldwin has tasted victory at Palau Blaugrana with FC Bayern Munich and Baskonia Vitoria-Gasteiz.

The American’s matchup against [Ricky Rubio](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/en/euroleague/players/ricky-rubio/lfw/) should be a one of the keys to this contest as the Spaniard is an accomplished defender, although he is still finding his best rhythm. Rubio ranks in the Top 100 in steals in NBA history (1,226, 1.8 spg.) and has a similar average (1.9 spg.) in 69 EuroLeague career games. Whether Rubio can put the clamps on Baldwin may be a determining factor in the outcome of this Round 33 matchup.

### Effectiveness under the rims

The battle in the paint should be another key factor in this game as both teams rely on their highly skilled big men to make the difference. When it comes to PIR per minute, it is hard to do better than Barca's centers, [Willy Hernangomez](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/en/euroleague/players/willy-hernangomez/003196/) and [Jan Vesely](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/en/euroleague/players/jan-vesely/000925/). Hernangomez leads the competition in PIR per 40 minutes at 32.2, averaging 27.3 points, 12.1 rebounds and 8.5 fouls drawn per 40 minutes. Vesely is fourth overall at 30.1 PIR per 40 minutes. He also has strong numbers (23.8 ppg., 8.1 rpg., 6.1 fouls drawn) on a per-40-minutes basis.

FC Barcelona centers Willy Hernangomez and Jan Vesely rank first and fourth, respectively, in PIR per 40 minutes in this Turkish Airlines EuroLeague season.

Given the fact that Hernangomez and Vesely have combined for 213 fouls drawn (6.7 per game), Maccabi’s [Josh Nebo](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/en/euroleague/players/josh-nebo/011199/) has to do his best to stay out of foul trouble, just as he did in Round 10 when he posted 13 points, 5 rebounds, 5 fouls drawn and zero fouls committed in over 16 minutes on the floor. Nebo ranks seventh in PIR per 40 minutes (28.1) and has been extraordinary over the last four games, averaging 15.3 points on 23-of-31 two-pointers (74.2% 2FG), 9.8 rebounds, 1.5 blocks and a PIR of 23.8. [Jasiel Rivero](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/en/euroleague/players/jasiel-rivero/011214/) has also raised his effectiveness to rank 34th in PIR per 40 minutes (22.5). In the last couple of games, Rivero has averaged 13.5 points on 90.9% two-point shooting and a PIR of 1.8 in less than 14 minutes.

It is do-or-die time for both teams, so expect nothing but intensity, great plays and a lot of action at Palau Blaugrana on Thursday, with the action getting underway at 20:30 CET.

Olympiacos Piraeus (20-12) will aim to keep pushing for the top four with a trip to face a Crvena Zvezda Meridianbet Belgrade team (11-21) that showed it is still ready to fight after playing Real very close last week.
