On Friday night, in a massive come-from-behind [89-81](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/en/euroleague/game-center/2023-24/panathinaikos-aktor-athens-fc-barcelona/E2023/279/) win over FC Barcelona, Mitoglou played a game-high 37 minutes and 47 seconds and finished with a 19-point, 10-rebound double-double. Zvezda did lose against Panathinaikos, but Nedovic was his team’s top performer with 19 points and 7 assists. ‘Nedo’ made 5-of-7 two-pointers and 3-of-6 triples that night. On Friday evening, Nedovic has his best game of the season. Zalgiris Kaunas stormed back into the play-in race with a pair of double-digit wins over playoff contenders, and in the middle of if it all was big man [Kevarrius Hayes](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/en/euroleague/players/kevarrius-hayes/010390/). The 27-year-old first amassed 13 points, 6 rebounds, 2 assists, 2 steals and 1 block in just 21 minutes for a career-best PIR of 26 in a [96-81](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/en/euroleague/game-center/2023-24/zalgiris-kaunas-virtus-segafredo-bologna/E2023/266/) win over Virtus Segafredo Bologna. Those were big and timely performances from Hayes, who has scored in double figures just three times this season and not since Round 10. He scored a total of 26 points over the last seven games, but posted 30 in two games this week, helping Zalgiris keep its postseason chances alive.

### Campazzo helped Real clinch first place

Real Madrid registered a pair of road victories to clinch first place in the regular-season standings and enter the playoffs as the top seed. [Facundo Campazzo](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/en/euroleague/players/facundo-campazzo/005928/) had an important role in both wins. First, in a close battle against ALBA Berlin and a [79-86](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/en/euroleague/game-center/2023-24/alba-berlin-real-madrid/E2023/262/) triumph, the Argentine had 14 points, 6 assists and 3 steals. The key was a 16-0 run to end the third quarter. ### Kaminsky shined in the double-round week

Partizan split its two home games this week, and its most consistent performer was center [Frank Kaminsky](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/en/euroleague/players/frank-kaminsky/012743/). The big man shined in an [87-83](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/en/euroleague/game-center/2023-24/partizan-mozzart-bet-belgrade-baskonia-vitoria-gasteiz/E2023/265/) win over Baskonia, scoring a team-high 20 points on 5-for-7 two-point shooting and going 3 for 4 from long range. He also had 3 rebounds and 3 assists, and the Serbian side was +14 with the American on the floor. Two days later, against first-place Real Madrid and its twin towers Walter Tavares and Vincent Poirier, Kaminsky played a season-high 28 minutes and was again Partizan's top scorer with 19 points, making 4-of-6 twos and 3-of-7 threes, with 4 rebounds and 2 assists. Kaminsky had +4 in the plus/minus column in a 12-point loss.

After six years and 10 games without a victory against FC Barcelona, the weight of history was certainly against Panathinaikos AKTOR Athens as the Spanish giant rolled into the Greek capital for Friday night’s huge game at OAKA.

Even more so when you also consider that Panathinaikos is hoping to end a 12-year absence from the Turkish Airlines EuroLeague Final Four, having last appeared in European basketball’s showpiece event in London in 2012 at the end of Zeljko Obradovic’s glorious reign.

A lot of time and many disappointments have passed since then, so there is an enormous amount of pressure on the current crop of Greens to bring the team back to glory. The weight of history, indeed.

### Recovering from a difficult moment

Midway through the second quarter, the weight of the present was also firmly against [Ergin Ataman](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/euroleague/teams/panathinaikos-aktor-athens/pan/ataman-ergin/)’s team as an impressive Barca powered its way through a 0-17 run to take a 24-40 advantage which, even that early, looked like it could be decisive.

But this Panathinaikos team, especially with the support of a passionate sold-out OAKA crowd, is made of strong stuff – strong enough to shed the burden of past and present struggles to produce a superb second-half showing, winning the last two quarters 55-35 with a combination of smothering defense and smoothly functioning offense.

[The final outcome, 89-81,](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/en/euroleague/news/live-blog-panathinaikos-bc-vs-barca-basket/) was one point short of the desired outcome for the Greens, as it just failed to secure the head-to-head advantage – i.e. the tiebreaker – against Barca following an 80-72 win for the *Blaugrana* in Round 6.

Coach Ataman, though, was unconcerned because – even a few minutes after the final buzzer – he already had everything worked out. 

“We keep the points average,” he explained. "Okay, we lost at Barcelona by eight points, now we won by eight, but in the general average we have plus 33 more than Barcelona, so it’s a big advantage before the last three games. It's like two victories tonight.”

### Panathinaikos looking to 'build something great'

Indeed, the eight-point victory means that Panathinaikos now has a 41-point advantage (+154) over Barcelona (+113), and Ataman’s double fist-pumping celebration with the fans showed he knows the team is now in a great position with three games remaining (Virtus Segafredo Bologna and FC Bayern Munich on the road, and ALBA Berlin at home).

Victory in those three games would be enough to guarantee home-court advantage in the playoffs for Panathinaikos, and key forward [Dinos Mitoglou](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/euroleague/players/konstantinos-mitoglou/007866/) summed up the determined mood of his locker room as he said: “We're trying to build something great. 

“Our guys are putting a lot of effort, the oldest guys and the youngest guys, the smallest and the biggest guys. We put our soul here, we put a great effort and great work.”

And as for the contribution from the fans and their spectacular atmosphere? He’s in no doubt there, either.

“It was amazing," gushed Mitoglou. “I hope we keep going like this. These sold-out games... it’s very hard for someone to beat us here.”

After the whirlwind that blew them away on and off the court on Friday night, Barcelona will not disagree with that last sentiment.

Melli served up a vintage performance on the offensive end in the first half to help Milan get into the driver’s seat and then supplied the defensive steel needed to fend off a spirited Fenerbahce fightback, as the visitors briefly turned the game on its head in the closing stages.

“We won the game and that’s the most important thing,” Melli said in his post-game comments. "Fenerbahce is a very good team so it wasn’t an easy task, but we did a pretty good job and kept alive our play-in chances. 

“Small details and a couple of big baskets from my teammates made the difference in the end — we were better than them down the stretch,” added the versatile forward, who finished on 17 points and 3 rebounds.

Tarik Biberovic forced late drama with an audacious baseline triple for the visitors, who ran out of time, although they did force a turnover on Milan’s final possession before throwing the ball away straight back into the home team’s hands.

Milan’s head coach Ettore Messina was visibly relieved after the titanic tussle and a dramatic finale, heaping praise on his players for showing grit in the face of adversity.

“We were up the whole game and after they went ahead, we made a couple of big plays,” Messina reflected. “We found a way to win, our players showed great heart and it’s the first time this season we’ve won twice in a double-round week.

### A potentially damaging defeat for Fenerbahce

While the outcome lifted Milan, it dented Fenerbahce’s hopes of finishing in the top four, with the situation at the top of the standings also providing for a thrilling climax. 

Defending champion Real Madrid has clinched top spot with games to spare, but a dogfight beckons for the runner-up spot onwards as two wins separate the next six teams in line, with automatic playoff berths as well as home-court advantage at stake.

Fenerbahce’s head coach Saras Jasikevicius acknowledged his team had left itself too much to do, although the visitors missed a chance to complete what would have amounted to a spectacular comeback.

“We dug ourselves into too big a hole,” said the 48-year-old Lithuanian tactician. “The reaction was fantastic and in the end the game was decided by tiny details, as is usually the case when it’s a close call.”

The home team couldn’t get going in the first half, with Barcelona’s greater physicality allowing the visiting team to mount a 0-17 charge which established a 16-point lead, 24-40, towards the end of the second quarter.

That run included a pair of smooth scores from Ricky Rubio and a three-pointer by Nico Laprovittola, and at that stage it appeared the Spanish team would keep hold of the encounter through its combination of frontcourt rebounding and backcourt ball handling.

### Panathinaikos leaned on its guards

But that all changed after the break. Sloukas, in particular, was a driving force throughout a superb second half which was won 55-35 by Panathinaikos. He spent more than 33 minutes on the floor, registering 18 points and 8 assists to earn a loud standing ovation from the sold-out home crowd in the final moments.

If Sloukas was the orchestrator, Nunn was the chief scorer as he finished with 22 points, making 7 of his 11 two-point attempts and 2 of 5 from long-range. And Grant completed the trio with his usual stellar defensive work, grabbing 4 steals including one which led to a thrilling alley-oop combination with [Mathias Lessort](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/euroleague/players/mathias-lessort/003842/).

Maccabi Platyika Tel Aviv had two reasons to celebrate after [its Round 31 contest at FC Bayern Munich](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/en/euroleague/news/live-blog-fc-bayern-basketball-vs-maccabi-tel-aviv-bc/) came to its final conclusion.

First, the Yellows managed to grab their fifth win in a row, completing a perfect double-round week in the process. And second, Maccabi guaranteed itself a spot in the postseason by improving its record to 18-13, four wins more than the 11th-placed team.

“It was a great win for us in a tough place \[to visit\]. We played against a really aggressive, well-coached team,” Maccabi head coach Oded Kattash recognized in the post-game press conference. “Basically, I think we won the game twice – once in the second quarter and another time in the fourth quarter.”

### Taking their foot off the gas

Katash was right because, to achieve that, Maccabi had to overcome a considerable rally from Bayern in the third period. The visitors seemed to be in full control of the game in the second quarter, having dominated Bayern en route to a 30-46 lead after 17 minutes. But Bayern came back and recovered a 69-65 edge early in the last quarter.

“I think we relaxed a little bit,” explained Maccabi center [Josh Nebo](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/euroleague/players/josh-nebo/011199/) after the game. “We didn't come out with the right energy, but you got to give credit to \[Bayern\]. They're a good team and of course they were going to fight back in the game. But I think we responded well in the fourth quarter.”

### Bayern had no answer for Maccabi

The reaction Nebo mentions was a kind of perfect storm, as Maccabi outscored its opponent 0-18 in 6 minutes to totally break the game into pieces. Defensively, the Yellows collapsed Bayern’s offense in that time span, forcing several missed shots and turnovers. And that granted the visitors numerous opportunities to score in transition.

The defensive effort that brought that offensive excellence can be easily described by noticing that Maccabi got 10 steals off Bayern’s 16 turnovers, which turned into 23 points. Also, it enabled the Maccabi players to score easy baskets in transition; they collected 14 fastbreak points against Bayern’s 2, which also made the difference.

“In both of those quarters \[the second and the fourth\] we kept them on 12 and 14 points,” celebrated Coach Kattash. “That that was the key for us. Offensively, we were more consistent. In the third quarter they had a run but, again, we showed character.”

Playing its fifth game in the last nine days, AS Monaco Basket showed plenty of grit and determination to beat Valencia Basket 79-78.

Fatigued Monaco responded to pull out an 'amazing' win

In usual circumstances, AS Monaco head coach Sasa Obradovic would not be too pleased with his side's performance in [a hard-fought 79-78 win over Valencia Basket](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/en/euroleague/news/live-blog-as-monaco-vs-valencia-basket/).

His team, which entered the league committing a league-low 9.7 turnovers, had 9 before halftime and finished with 15. Monaco made just 12-of-20 free throws and never managed to put the game away.

However, after the game, Obradovic fired away:

"In the situation that we were in \[the last few\] days, it is an amazing win," Obradovic sad. "It was really like a finals \[victory\] for me. A great win."

### A grueling stretch for Monaco

Obviously, there is a background to the whole story. The situation Obradovic is referring to is a fact that this was Monaco's fifth game in the last nine days.

It started with a road win in Berlin last Thursday, continued with French Cup games on Saturday and Sunday, before a Round 30 contest against EA7 Emporio Armani Milan at home on Wednesday.

"We have a fatigue going on, but we pushed through it," [Mike James](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/euroleague/players/mike-james/005985/) noted. "We just wanted to get the win and move on."

That they did, thanks to a fourth-quarter effort.

Monaco was seemingly in control for the entire game, and led by 12 in the first half, but Valencia never went away. At one point late in the third quarter the visitors were 9 for 18 from long range, and Valencia went in front 59-61 midway through the fourth quarter, its only lead the entire night.

But Monaco answered with a 10-1 run, with [John Brown](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/euroleague/players/john-brown/010588/) bringing energy after spending most of the second half on the sidelines after spraining his foot. Mike James made plays on both ends of the floor, as did [Donta Hall](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/euroleague/players/donta-hall/011196/), who had three dunks during that aforementioned run.

"Last quarter, when we needed, we were good defensively. I am happy," Obradovic added.

What made things even more difficult is that this performance came just 48 hours after an 18-point home loss against Milan, which snapped Monaco's seven-game winning streak.

"We got punched in the face against Milan, but good teams respond," commented [Jaron Blossomgame](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/euroleague/players/jaron-blossomgame/011231/). "Luckily, we responded."

Blossomgame scored 14 of his 17 points in the first half, helping Monaco get over that 'punch in the mouth', before James and Hall finished the job.

The win put Monaco a win away from clinching a playoff spot and keeps it on track to grab home-court advantage in the playoffs. Coach Obradovic has no doubt his team will be looking back to its old self in no time.

"We were struggling physically tonight, but we are going to be a completely different team in a couple of days. I am quite sure, and we are getting back some players who missed some time. It is going to be a different picture."
