Nigel Hayes-Davis certainly knows what it is like to play under Saras Jasikevicius. Now in his third stint playing under the orders of the Lithuanian tactician, he played an important role in getting the Jasikevicius era at Fenerbahce Beko Istanbul off to a winning start with [a stellar display against AS Monaco in Round 14](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/euroleague/news/euroleague-live-blog-fenerbahce-beko-vs-as-monaco-basket/) of the 2023-24 Turkish Airlines EuroLeague season.

From Zalgiris Kaunas to FC Barcelona and now Fenerbahce. There’s been almost no separating Hayes-Davis and Saras over the last five seasons. On Friday night, Hayes-Davis’s trademark energy was on show early on against Monaco before he went on to score a team-high 23 points, with 15 of those coming in the second half as Fenerbahce saw its win over the line.

### Jasikevicius made some impact

One of the notable ways in which Jasikevicius put his fingerprints on this Fenerbahce team came before the game, as he announced three of his former players in the starting five. Nick Calathes was named in the starting five, despite a rocky relationship with Saras at FC Barcelona, as were Hayes-Davis and another ex-Barca player in Sertac Sanli. Yet, once the game tipped off, the Lithuanian coach said most of the credit for the win has to go to former Fenerbahce boss Dimitris Itoudis.

“It’s a big win against a very good team,” said Jaskevicius in the post-game flash interview. “Obviously I’m inheriting a team that was extremely well coached, an experienced team. My job today was not to get in the way and try to let them do what they already learned under Dimitris. The players played with a lot of energy. It would have helped to hit some shots. But in general, it was a really great effort by the boys.”

There’s not a lot that can be taken from one game, especially given that Jasikevicius was only confirmed as Itoudis’s replacement on Thursday, but he did maintain Fenerbahce’s 100% record at home this season with the club’s sixth successive win at Ulker Sports and Events Hall.

Yet, as he recognized after the game, a few of his players already know what sort of demands he has, but many of the squad are yet to understand what is expected of them.

“We cannot evaluate \[my impact just yet\],” Saras commented. “Some guys already know, they played for me for some years, but the other ones we just said ‘hello’ basically in the locker room. It’s too early for any evaluations.”

### An interesting week coming up

That much may be true, but at a big club like Fenerbahce, people will always find things to evaluate. Next up for Jasikevicius is a game against his former team, Zalgiris, to start the double-round week next Wednesday before a trip to ALBA Berlin.

If Fenerbahce improves its home record to 7-0 by downing Zalgiris and then beats the 2-12 ALBA on the road, with the Turkish side having gone 1-7 on its travels this season, Jasikevicius’s squad could surge up the standings somewhat. Then, after the double-round week, it will be time to evaluate how things are going. Until then, though, expect Hayes-Davis to be at the center of everything positive for Jasikevicius and Fenerbahce.

Fenerbahce is unbeaten in five games at home this season while Monaco's four road wins are the second-most in the league.

### Jasikevicius factor hard to guess

With Jasikevicius having arrived on Thursday, a day after Itoudis was dismissed, he has had precious little time to put his imprint on Fenerbahce yet. But he does have experience previously coaching [Nigel Hayes-Davis](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/euroleague/players/nigel-hayes-davis/008962/), [Nick Calathes](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/euroleague/players/nick-calathes/001932/) and [Sertac Sanli](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/euroleague/players/sertac-sanli/002968/) when all three played under him at FC Barcelona.

"Everything happened very intensely and quickly during my transfer process," Jasikevicius said shortly after arriving in Istanbul. "Of course, the situation is not easy, but at the end of the day, we are here to do our job, to help Fenerbahce win matches and hopefully great success. I'm absolutely thrilled to be here. There are so many familiar faces and places here for me. I know it's not an easy situation, so we'll need everyone's support. However, we will gradually try to implement some new ideas."

The new Fenerbahce coach is well aware that his first opponent with Fenerbahce will not take it easy on him.

"Everybody understands the quality that Monaco has, a Final Four team that is definitely already a very solid project with the team having a lot of continuity with the coach and some players," he said. "We just need to come out, give the best and hopefully try to win the game."

### Monaco seeks first EuroLeague win in Istanbul

In two tries to date, Monaco has yet to beat Fenerbahce on the road. Despite going all the way to the Final Four last year, Monaco was 0-2 against the Turkish giants, losing 98-94 in Istanbul and 93-96 at home. The season before, Fenerbahce won 96-86 at home in their first meeting ever although Monaco was able to get revenge with a 92-78 decision in the principality.

Indeed, Istanbul has not been a lucky place for Monaco in its three EuroLeague seasons. It also lost both of its road games against Anadolu Efes Istanbul the last two seasons. As such, Monaco is 0-for-4 in visits to the Turkish metropolis while playing in the EuroLeague, although in the BKT EuroCup, it won twice in Istanbul, beating Galatasaray in both the 2018-19 and 2019-20 campaigns.

### Good friends, rivals for a night

Calathes and [Mike James](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/euroleague/players/mike-james/005985/) became friends when they played together for Panathinaikos AKTOR Athens for the better part of two seasons starting in 2016. Calathes was the Greens' starting point guard and James came off the bench. They helped Panathinaikos finish fourth at 19-11 in the regular season before getting swept by soon-to-be champion Fenerbahce in the playoffs.

James returned to Panathinaikos for 12 games late in the 2017-18 season and joined forces with Calathes in the Greens' starting lineup. Once again, Panathinaikos was fourth at the end of the 2017-18 regular season with a 19-11 record. James had 24 points and Calathes set an all-time playoffs record with 16 assists in a Game 1 win over Real Madrid, but after that Los Blancos stayed unbeaten all the way to the title.

Last season, Calathes played well against James, averaging 12.5 points, 7.5 assists and a PIR of 19.0 in Fenerbahce's two winning efforts. In those games, James averaged 20.0 points, 5.5 assists and a PIR of 19.5, but shot the ball with lower percentages than usual (33.3% 2FG, 27.8% 3FG). Their matchup on Friday will one to follow, for sure.

James is their only double-digit scorer away from the Principality, averaging a league-best 20.3 points per night on the road.

### Different offensive distribution

Offensive distribution helps explain Fenerbahce's perfect home record. Nine different players average more than 7.0 points per game when the team plays at home. For Monaco, meanwhile, James is the only double-digit scorer away, averaging a league-best 20.3 points on the road. James scored in double digits in all seven road games until now. One might think that stopping James should be enough to beat Monaco. Well, good luck with that. James is playing some of the best basketball of his career, averaging 23.3 points, 6.3 rebounds, 5.0 assists and a PIR of 25.3 in the last four games.

Both teams have deep rosters, tons of versatility, experience, and masterminds on the sidelines, so expect some great basketball game at Ulker Sports and Event Hall on a special night for the home club.

His homecoming was a bittersweet one for [Bayern Munich head coach Pablo Laso](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/euroleague/teams/fc-bayern-munich/mun/laso-pablo?season=E2023), as Real Madrid laid a red carpet for its former boss and then pulled it from right under his feet in an emotional Turkish Airlines EuroLeague clash on Thursday.

Real, the competition's reigning champion, lived up to its billing and won the game [88-73](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/euroleague/game-center/2023-24/real-madrid-fc-bayern-munich/E2023/119/#boxscore) after Laso was given a standing ovation by the home team's fans. The 56-year old tactician had left a singular legacy at Real – and to his successor and former assistant, Chus Mateo – having won two EuroLeague titles alongside six Spanish championships and as many national cup trophies during a glorious 11-year spell in charge of the club.

### Laso was grateful and emotional

"Congratulations to Real Madrid," a familiar opening line from visiting coaches at WiZink Center, surely sounded strange to reporters at the post-game press conference, coming as it did from Laso's lips.

"I am grateful for the welcome and it's nice to be remembered," he added before acknowledging that Bayern was put to the sword by players with whom he had developed personal friendships over the years.

"It was very emotional because I had been here for many years. Friendship doesn't help in these cases because some of these guys played really well today, like Sergio \[Lull\], who provided a change of pace. We knew competing against Real Madrid would be difficult because the likes of Chacho \[Sergio Rodriguez\], Facu \[Campazzo\], Sergio \[Lull\] and so many others are players of great quality."

Real and Laso parted ways in July 2022. He was succeeded by his longtime assistant, Mateo, who went on to claim the club's 11th EuroLeague title, and his first as head coach, at the 2023 Final Four in Kaunas.

### Real imposed its quality late

Mateo acknowledged that a royal reception was no less than what his former mentor deserved for all his accomplishments.

"It was expected and well-deserved," Mateo said. "He was here for a long time and it was triumph for him to feel loved by the fans as well as his former players and staff."

As for the game, Bayern stood its ground for three quarters before Real took the game by the scruff of the neck in the fourth, improving to 13-1 at the top of the table while Bayern dropped to 6-8.

"We found it difficult to get into the right pace early on, but then we found a way to get going," Mateo explained. "The key was restricting them to 14 points in the second quarter and 16 in the third, thanks to solid defense. It was very emotional because of Pablo's homecoming but at the end of the day we are where we want to be. There's a long way to go, but we'll keep working to get the wins, home and away."

Bayern Munich head coach Pablo Laso returned to WiZink Center with high hopes of pulling off what would have amounted to a stunning upset of his former club Real Madrid, but his homecoming was spoiled by a pair of veterans who rolled back the years.

Sergio Llull produced a stellar performance at the ripe young age of 36 and 32-year-old Facundo Campazzo also stood out as [Real engineered an 88-73 win](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/euroleague/news/euroleague-live-blog-real-madrid-baloncesto-vs-fc-bayern-munich/), improving to 13-1 in a rampant start to the 2023-24 Turkish Airlines EuroLeague Regular Season while Bayern dropped to 6-8.

### A meeting of old friends

Laso, who coached Real between 2011 and 2022, was given a standing ovation by the home fans before and after the game, having captured the 2014-15 and 2017-18 EuroLeague titles with Lull and Campazzo in their prime. He also won six Spanish league titles and as many Spanish Cups, before a serious health issue forced the 56-year-old to make way for his successor and assistant of eight years, Chus Mateo.

It would have been a perfect first return to Madrid for Laso, having then been appointed by Bayern during the off-season following a one-season break. However, Llull and Campazzo made sure there was only going to be one outcome.

### Llull and Campazzo came to the fore

Llull paced Real with 16 points and Campazzo added 14, the bulk of them in the third quarter when Bayern’s challenge was still very much alive, with the former making it clear in no uncertain terms what Laso’s mentorship had meant to him.

“It was strange in the beginning, but it was beautiful,” Llull said in a flash post-game interview as he walked off the court. “The fans gave him a standing ovation and he deserved it. He taught me a lot of things about basketball and life. I love him but we had a game to play this evening and we’re happy for the win,” he added.

Laso, for his part, conceded that the ruthless Real Madrid of his own making was just too good for his present team, although he praised Bayern’s effort.

“Real will punish you for every mistake,” he commented. “We didn’t commit many, but we committed enough for them to win. We did a good job at both ends of the floor in some situations, but we’re talking about a great team here. They are the best team in the EuroLeague right now.”

Mateo urged his players not to get carried away in order to keep reproducing the kind of form which has set Real apart from the rest of the field in Europe’s premier club basketball competition.

“We played much better in the second half, as we shared the ball well,” he said. “We had only 5 assists in the first half and we also had better shooting percentages after the break. We need to keep doing what we are doing, which is running and finding our rhythm. We have to keep working on a daily basis and take it one game at a time.”

Partizan authored a historic first half

Partizan scored a club record 58 points before halftime in its 85-93 road win over Zalgiris Kaunas on Thursday. The previous record was 55 first-half points scored in Game 5 of the 2023 EuroLeague Playoffs against Real Madrid. Despite Partizan taking a 39-55 halftime lead in that game, Real rallied to a 98-94 victory to qualify for the Final Four and eventually win its 11th continental crowd. This time, the story was very different.

Coach Zeljko Obradovic's team played close to perfection in the first half, making 15 of 24 two-pointers, 6 of 11 attempts from beyond the arc and all 10 of its free throw attempts. Despite not missing many shots, Partizan grabbed 5 offensive rebounds, and finished the first half with 8 assists and just 1 turnover for a team PIR of 70.

Partizan had several go-to guys in the first half. Alen Smailagic and Zach LeDay helped the visitors quickly build a double-digit lead, 3-13. Kevin Punter buried his first 4 three-point shots to boost Partizan's margin to 24-40. P.J. Dozier had 10 points in the second quarter and James Nunnally's three-pointer allowed Partizan to set the new record.

"It is good that we just had 1 turnover," Coach Obradovic said at halftime. "This is correct, but defensively, we need to adjust some things that they scored very easy \[against\]."

Partizan's numbers went down in the second half, getting just 6 assists, collecting 8 turnovers and burying just 2 of 9 three-pointers, but the good momentum gained in that historic first half, and the fact that five players scored 12 points or more made the difference at Zalgirio Arena. Punter led the way with 22 points, Dozier added 16 and Nunnally 14.

"We came out with a lot of energy, that was the whole goal," Dozier said after the game. "We knew that the crowd was going to get into it early and tried to stay together, but seeing our shots fall, of course, it is definitely a motivation for us to keep going and just to make the right plays."
