It's not every day that the team with lower shooting percentages across the board can win a basketball game, but that's exactly what [Anadolu Efes Istanbul did while downing visiting Panathinaikos AKTOR Athens 71-68](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/euroleague/game-center/2023-24/anadolu-efes-istanbul-panathinaikos-aktor-athens/E2023/101/#boxscore) in the return to Sinan Erdem Sports Hall of visiting head coach Ergin Ataman on Tuesday.

Panathinaikos shot slightly better from inside the arc (53.1% to 50.0%) and the free throw line (90.9% to 87.5%), but much better from the three-point line (40.0% to 17.2%) than Efes.

What made the difference in the end was that Efes shot much more often thanks to extra possessions born of both hustle and caution.

Waylaid by injuries, Efes rode inspired performances by point guard Shane Larkin and center Tyrique Jones. Not even losing a seventh player, starter Erkan Yilmaz, to injury in the first half dampened the home team's spirit.

That was evident in Efes winning the rebounding battle 40-32 with an incredible advantage of 19 offensive boards to just 6 for the Greens. Jones had 7 of those, but seven other Efes players contributed, including Yilmaz, just-signed Dan Oturu and little-used Ercan Osmani with 2 each.

"Today we were really good on the offensive boards as a team," Larkin would say afterwards. "You now, Tyrique had 14 rebounds. We've been preaching rebounding, rebounding, rebounding, and he came out and was an animal tonight."

Those 19 boards matched Efes's best output in more than four seasons on the offensive glass and gave the hosts the extra possessions to offset the shooting advantages of Panathinaikos. But it wasn't all. Efes also had just 9 turnovers to 16 for the visitors, and that difference also helped the cause in what was a close game until the end.

In the end, Efes attempted 71 field goal to just 52 for Panathinaikos while also earning 16 free throws to 11 for the visitors. With all those extra tries, it didn't matter at the end that Panathinaikos was more accurate because Efes won this game with heart. 

"We're missing five, six key guys, but we have to continue to step up. Next man up mentality: stay together, fight together and see what we can do," Larkin said. "Everybody gave their all tonight, a lot of key contributors. It may not be on the scoreboard, but the energy, the effort, the little things we did to get this win were huge. That's gotta be our identity going forward and this was a good step in the right direction."

In a game that went to the final shot, Anadolu Efes Istanbul edged Panathinaikos Athens 71-68 at Sinan Erdem Sports Hall on Tuesday. 

In Round 12, Ataman coached his 400th EuroLeague game when his team, Panathinaikos B.C: Athens, visited Anadolu Efes Istanbul, the squad he led to back-to-back EuroLeague titles in 2021 and 2022.

In Round 12, Ataman coached his 400th EuroLeague game when his team, Panathinaikos, visited Anadolu Efes Istanbul, the squad he led to back-to-back EuroLeague titles in 2021 and 2022. It was Ataman's first game against Efes since parting ways last season, and this milestone added even more excitement to it.

Ataman coached 222 games with Efes in his eight seasons with the team. Ataman had a 127-95 record with Efes (57.2% wins). He coached 81 EuroLeague games with Galatasaray Istanbul, 54 with Ulker Istanbul, 22 with Montepaschi Siena, 12 with Panathinaikos and 9 with Fortitudo Bologna. He entered the game with 201 wins and 198 losses.

After winning two EuroLeague titles with the Turkish club, the charismatic coach heads back to Istanbul with the Greens.

 

Ergin Ataman and Anadolu Efes Istanbul will forever have their names linked together. During a six-year stint at Efes, the current Panathinaikos Athens boss transformed the club and helped the team win the Turkish Airlines EuroLeague for the first time in its history in the 2020-21 campaign, before then going back-to-back the following season.

Zeljko Obradovic leads the all-time standings; he coached his 504th EuroLeague game (since the 2000-01 season) last week. Ettore Messina ranks second with 450 games. Dusko Ivanovic is fourth with 370 EuroLeague games, followed by Xavi Pascual (356) and Pablo Laso (352).

Ataman has been a winner almost everywhere he has been. He is the only coach to lead three different teams (Efes, Galatasasary and Besiktas Emlakjet Istanbul) to the Turkish League title. Added to his two EuroLeague titles with Efes, Ataman led Galatasaray to the 2015-16 BKT EuroCup title, won two other European trophies with Siena and Besiktas, respectively, and was chosen as the 2020-21 EuroLeague Coach of the Year.

There was never any doubt that Monaco was aiming high this season. But after starting the season with back-to-back losses, questions were raised. Since then, Monaco has found its groove while incorporating [Kemba Walker](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/euroleague/players/kemba-walker/012709/) into the mix and welcoming back [Jordan Loyd](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/euroleague/players/jordan-loyd/009754/) from injury. They have won four of their last five road games, with the lone defeat coming at the champs. This week, Monaco faces two tough road tests – at Partizan Mozzart Bet Belgrade and at Zalgiris Kaunas, on courts that hosted the last two Final Fours. Monaco has the depth to ride out two tough road games, the scorers to trouble any opponent and, in [John Brown](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/euroleague/players/john-brown/010588/) and [Alpha Diallo](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/euroleague/players/alpha-diallo/011226/), the lock-down defenders to foil other teams' attacks. And when it all comes together this week, Monaco will be knocking on the door of second place while opening up a cushion in the race for home-court advantage in the playoffs.

### Partizan will make its move

Not to disagree with a colleague, but... I like Partizan's vibe right now. Of course, big man [Frank Kaminsky](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/euroleague/players/frank-kaminsky/012743/), injured to open the week, will be missed. But if the rest of the team is healthy, and with [Bruno Caboclo](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/euroleague/players/bruno-caboclo/012096/) coming along strong at center, Partizan has the depth to compete with both Monaco on Tuesday and, 48 hours later, EA7 Emporio Armani Milan. The key will be defense, which Partizan has played better at home, and can play better still, with the likes of [James Nunnally](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/euroleague/players/james-nunnally/007400/), [Mateusz Ponitka](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/euroleague/players/mateusz-ponitka/004172/) and [Aleksa Avramovic](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/euroleague/players/aleksa-avramovic/003983/) all capable of putting the brakes on opponents. And that's about all it's going to take. Partizan was already second-ranked in scoring before team leader and clutch shot-maker [Kevin Punter](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/euroleague/players/kevin-punter/009862/) came back last week. And there is the small matter of 18,000 fans to inspire the home team and shake the eardrums of the visitors. Partizan is already 4-1 at home. Make it 6-1 at week's end and a spot in the top eight of the standings.

Kevin Punter missed his first five shots, and was still scoreless when Panathinaikos went up 61-71 with under 5 minutes to go in regulation. But then Punter turned it on, he finished with 13 points, on 5-for-12 field goal shooting and 3 assists.

### ASVEL will prevail in two different home arenas

ASVEL, one of six teams playing two home games this week, doesn't have a home win yet this season. ASVEL is 0-4 so far in Villeurbanne, but since the arrival of head coach Gianmarco Pozzecco, all of its home losses were in dramatic fashion: a three-point decision against Virtus, a squandered double-digit lead against Baskonia, and most recently a double-OT loss against Bayern. But ASVEL has been very competitive away, too, as witnessed last week when FC Barcelona needed its best scoring night at home in four years to pull out a tough win. This week, ASVEL will not only get its first home win of the season, but it will win both games – one in each of its arenas. First, I see a resilient ASVEL beating Maccabi Playtika Tel Aviv at the Astroballe, then doing the same against Valencia Basket in the beautiful new LDLC Arena, giving its fans a whole bunch of reasons to celebrate.

### Valencia will use the double round to right its wrongs

Holding a team meeting after a loss is a sign that things are not quite going to plan. Well, after Valencia Basket crumbled in the fourth quarter at home to Baskonia Vitoria-Gasteiz in Round 11, leading 70-67 after three quarters before being outscored 14-31 in the final period, head coach Alex Mumbru wanted to speak things through with his players. 

Bragging rights are at stake as Valencia attempt to end a four–game losing slump with a Spanish derby against Baskonia, which is also eager to return to winning ways after suffering a late loss to Monaco. This game has plenty of significance as it will break a tie between two teams on the playoff fringes.

Valencia, which started the season 5-1, is in the midst of a five-game losing streak and comes up against Crvena Zvezda Meridianbet Belgrade at La Fonteta in Round 12 on Wednesday before travelling to face LDLC ASVEL Villeurbanne in Round 13 on Friday. I expect Valencia to improve to a very respectable 5-2 at home by beating Zvezda, which has yet to win on the road this season, and then make it two losses from two for ASVEL at its brand-new LDLC Arena. In the space of just a few days, those two wins will calm things down for Coach Mumbru's troops.

### Virtus will double its fun at home

Virtus Segafredo Bologna is 5-1 at home this season, and despite playing against two true powerhouses this week, FC Barcelona and Maccabi Playtika Tel Aviv, head coach Luca Banchi's team should finish with a fantastic 9-4 record. Virtus's best player, [Toko Shengelia](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/euroleague/players/tornike-shengelia/001133/) can find a lot of advantages at power forward due to his passing skills and trademark character. Virtus has the right defensive weapons to confront two teams full of talented guards, relying on [Iffe Lundberg](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/euroleague/players/iffe-lundberg/010781/), [Isaia Cordinier](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/euroleague/players/isaia-cordinier/009549/) and [Alessandro Pajola](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/euroleague/players/alessandro-pajola/006739/). Even when Barca center [Jan Vesely](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/euroleague/players/jan-vesely/000925/) and Maccabi big man [Josh Nebo](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/euroleague/players/josh-nebo/011199/) are very different, Virtus has versatility at the 'five' position with [Bryant Dunston](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/euroleague/players/bryant-dunston/003048/), [Devontae Cacok](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/euroleague/players/devontae-cacok/012714/) and [Jordan Mickey](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/euroleague/players/jordan-mickey/008847/). Virtus fans are some of the biggest connoisseurs in the EuroLeague and know how to put pressure on the opponent. It should very hard for everyone, even for big teams like Barca and Maccabi. Costello suffered an ankle sprain late in a domestic league game on Sunday, and is set to miss at least this week's two home games.

Fantasy tips: Affordable production for double-round week

[Shavon Shields](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/euroleague/players/shavon-shields/007831/) (13.8 credits) – At first glance, Shields's 13.8 credits may not see "affordable", but the Milan forward has had at least 18 points scored and d 18.7 or more fantasy points in each of his last four appearances. And now, with fellow forward scorer [Nikola Mirotic out all week](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/euroleague/news/latest-euroleague-injury-news-tae2324-round-11/), Shields is set up for even more volume in road tests at FC Bayern Munich and Partizan Mozzart Bet Belgrade, the latter of whom is among the league's most generous defenses, allowing 87.0 points per game.

[Mike Scott](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/euroleague/players/mike-scott/012729/) (10.4 credits) – LDLC ASVEL Villeurbanne's forward has been a steady fantasy contributor lately, posting between 14 and 19 fantasy points in six of the last seven rounds. His season-high 19 came in a road loss to Barcelona last week. Scott is averaging 19.3 points and 3.3 rebounds over the last three games. This week, ASVEL will enjoy two home games, against Maccabi Playtika Tel Aviv and Valencia Basket.

Fantasy tips: Rounds 12-13

[Daniel Hackett](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/euroleague/players/daniel-hackett/001844/) (8.9 credits) – The Virtus Segafredo Bologna veteran point guard is another player set for two home games this week. Virtus might not be as hot as early in the season, but Hackett's performances have certainly been improving. He has 12.0 or more fantasy points in five of last six games, and in the last two home games he averaged 12.0 points and 6.5 assists, accumulating a total of fantasy 33 points in two games, maing him an absolutely great value for just 8.9 credits.

[Joel Bolomboy](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/euroleague/players/joel-bolomboy/009035/) (9.6 credits) – Another player who's cost is in the single digits, the Crvena Zvezda Meridianbet Belgrade big man has developed a nice rapport with both Milos Teodosic and Yago Dos Santos, having been on a receiving end of their passes fora  bunch of easy dunks. The only game in which he played fewer than 22 minutes since the arrival of head coach Ioannis Sfairopoulos was a blowout win against Fenerbahce. Just two Zvezda players average more than Bolomboy's 13.6 fantasy points, and he had a season-high 19.8 in the team's last outing.

[Keenan Evans](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/euroleague/players/keenan-evans/011218/) (13.8 credits) – Zalgiris Kaunas's star point guard has had his ups and downs this season after returning from a torn Achilles, but in the last two weeks, both road games, he has posted fantasy performances of 21.0 and 18.7 points, respectively. Over the last two games, Evans has averaged 20.0 points while combining to shoot 7-for-9 from three-point range. He has also drawn 11 personal fouls, with only three players drawing more than that over the last two rounds. With Zalgiris facing ALBA on the road, and Monaco at home, Evens is also a strong consideration for the role of team captain.

The newest addition for injury-plagued Anadolu Efes Istanbul is a power player who is among the Turkish League’s scoring and rebounding leaders this season.

 Efes bolsters frontline with Daniel Oturu 

Anadolu Efes Istanbul addressed the injuries to its frontcourt by signing big man Daniel Oturu for the remainder of the season, on loan from his previous Turkish League team. Oturu (2.03 meters, 24 years old) arrives from Yukatel Merkezefendi, with whom he averaged 20.3 points and 9.6 rebounds in 10 Turkish League games this season. This is his first season in Europe after playing the past three professionally in the United States.

Oturu played for the Los Angeles Clippers in the NBA in the 2020-21 season and briefly for the Toronto Raptors the following year. He also suited up for the Windy City Bulls in the G-League. Before that, Oturu played two seasons of college basketball for the University of Minnesota.

### To the rescue for injury-riddled Efes

Oturu arrives in the nick of time and is registered to play against Panathinaikos AKTOR Athens on Tuesday for Efes, which has had a run of mostly frontcourt injuries. To the off-and-on absence of center Tibor Pleiss, Efes had already seen another center, [Ante Zizic](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/euroleague/news/ante-zizic-anadolu-efes-sk-out-for-three-weeks-with-calf-injury/), ruled out until mid-December with a calf injury and power forward [Derek Willis](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/euroleague/news/efes-forward-willis-undergoes-finger-surgery/) until mid-January after undergoing surgery for a broken finger. Then, on Monday, the news came that veteran power forward [Will Clyburn](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/euroleague/news/efes-loses-clyburn-beaubois-to-injury/) will also be gone through mid-January with a leg injury while swingman [Rodrigue Beaubois](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/euroleague/news/efes-loses-clyburn-beaubois-to-injury/) is to miss three weeks with a back injury.
