Heading into Round 10 of this Turkish Airlines EuroLeague campaign, it is hard to find a player in the league who has scored more and performed better in recent weeks than Olympiacos Piraeus forward Alec Peters.

The 28-year-old, playing in his sixth season in the competition and his second with Olympiacos, has played the best basketball of his career during the month of November.

Over the last four games, all this month, only one player has averaged more points than Peters, who posted 20.5 points over that span. 

### Alec Peters has found his groove

Peters collected 19 points and 6 rebounds on the road in Round 6 against Fenerbahce Beko Istanbul, then had 22 points plus 8 rebounds against Baskonia Vitoria-Gasteiz in Round 7.

During November's double-round week last week, Peters first had 13 points, 8 rebounds and 3 assists in a road win against Maccabi Playtika Tel Aviv, then posted a personal-best 28 points in a career-high 39:07 minutes on the floor, along with 4 rebounds and 3 assists, in a win over Crvena Zvezda Meridianbet Belgrade.

Heading into Round 10 of this Turkish Airlines EuroLeague campaign, it is hard to find a player in the league who has scored more and performed better in recent weeks than Olympiacos Piraeus veteran forward Alec Peters.

He has also connected on 11 triples on 22 three-point shots (50.0%) so far in November. He was 4-for-6 from downtown against Baskonia and 4-for-8 in a win over Zvezda last week.

When you add all those two-pointers and three-pointers together, no player has made more field goals, 29, than Peters over the last four rounds.

In addition, the No. 25 made 13 of his 14 free throws, all while averaging 6.5 rebounds and 2.8 assists since Round 6. 

With his best game coming last week in Round 9, when he tied a career-best 31 PIR against Zvezda, Peters has accumulated a performance index rating of 88 since Round 6, which is the third-best mark in the EuroLeague over that four-game period.

Peters has done it while playing 31 minutes and 34 seconds on average over the last four games, nearly double his career average in minutes played.

And he used that time tremendously, considering that heading into this four-game stretch, he had career averages of 6.7 points, on 53.6% two-point and 43.1% three-point shooting and an average PIR of 7.1.

Peters will certainly try to extend his run of good form on Friday night when Zalgiris Kaunas comes to Piraeus.

The 28-year-old has a good chance to continue his fine form when Zalgiris Kaunas visits Peace and Friendship Stadium in Round 10 on Friday night.

### The fans – and celebrities – came out in numbers

The immediate impact of the new LDLC Arena was obvious from the attendance: 11,354 spectators, more than double the number of fans who came to watch ASVEL’s last game at the old Astroballe venue.

The fans had turned out in full force to see the new place with their own eyes, and so had the celebrities. Recently retired French tennis star Jo-Wilfried Tsonga claimed a courtside seat, along with several members of the Lyon soccer team whose stadium is right next door, and a bunch of former ASVEL players.

And, of course, ASVEL president Tony Parker was also on hand to see his long-cherished ambition become a reality. Parker has worked hard to ensure the facilities available to ASVEL match his high ambitions for the club’s future, and when he stepped onto the court to address the fans before the game, his pride was palpable.

After all that, there was the small matter of a game to play. And what a game it would prove to be.

### A new dawn under Coach Pozzecco

Under the charismatic leadership of relatively new coach Gianmarco Pozzecco, ASVEL has become a much more competitive team in the last few weeks. But both the team’s victories under the Italian playcaller had come on the road, so there was an obvious incentive – aside from christening the new arena in the best possible way – for ASVEL to claim the victory on Thursday.

### History was almost made

All of them could have been decisive, but ultimately none of them were. Instead, with the game just 2 seconds away from becoming the first in EuroLeague history to go to triple overtime, an offensive foul by Lauvergne and a free throw by Niels Giffey was enough to settle the outcome of a game that simply had everything.

Everything, that is, except a home win on an historic night. But, considering the unmatched entertainment they enjoyed on their first trip to their new home, ASVEL fans will surely be back. And so will their team.

The first tipoff in the opening game at LDLC Arena, the new home of LDLC ASVEL Villeurbanne, as the French side hosted FC Bayern Munich in Round 10 of the 2023-24 Turkish Airlines EuroLeague Regular Season.

On a night that almost went to triple overtime for the first time in EuroLeague history, the ASVEL fans have reason to be optimistic, despite losing.

LDLC Arena served up an unforgettable opening night 

FC Bayern Munich came away with a 100-101 double-overtime win at LDLC ASVEL in Round 10 of the 2023-24 EuroLeague Regular Season on Thursday night, with three-pointers proving key.

FC Bayern Munich has been on the receiving end of some close decisions in recent games in the Turkish Airlines EuroLeague, most recently losing by just 1 point, 74-73, at Zalgiris Kaunas last week. So, when Thursday's Round 10 trip to LDLC ASVEL Villeurbanne started to build up towards another nail-biting finale, the German team must have started to fear the worst.

In the end, though, Bayern was able to reverse the recent course of history by ending up on the right side of a tight finish, [sneaking a 100-101 victory after double overtime](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/euroleague/news/live-blog-ldlc-asvel-vs-fc-bayern-munich/) in one of the most truly remarkable – and longest – games in the history of the competition.

### ASVEL looked on course for the win

For a while, it didn’t even look as though Bayern would keep the game interesting. Early in the fourth quarter, ASVEL led by 12 points, 63-51, and the visiting team’s shot-shy offense, which scored just 14 points in the third quarter, was offering no signs of life.

In particular, Bayern had desperately struggled from three-point range, making only 4 of its 21 attempts from beyond the arc. But suddenly, without warning, Andreas Obst hit a pair of three-pointers, reducing the margin to a manageable gap and making ASVEL – which had gone cold against Pablo Laso’s zone defense – decidedly nervous.

Obst started a trend, and others followed: Niels Giffey, Devin Booker (twice) and Nick Weiler-Babb were also on target from deep, and the 12-point deficit had been turned into a four-point lead, 69-73, with just 2 minutes left.

With victory within reach, though, Bayern still had hurdles to overcome. ASVEL roared back and took the lead, 74-73, through David Lighty’s triple with 29 seconds left. With just 6 seconds on the clock, Leandro Bolmaro drew a shooting foul and had the chance to win it from the line; he couldn’t, missing his second free throw, and overtime beckoned.

### The battle continued in overtime

The first extra 5 minutes again saw Bayern take charge with a 0-9 run, capped by Giffey’s three-pointer. Bolmaro protected the lead with a gutsy driving layup-and-one, but he was injured making the play and couldn’t attempt the free throw. Carsen Edwards came off the bench and, dead cold, missed the extra attempt, which sparked ASVEL on a 6-0 run in 40 seconds, making it 88-85 with 11 seconds left.

Bayern needed a three to tie it and remarkably got it to fall as Weiler-Babb calmly sidestepped the good defense of Mike Scott and drained a triple. That made it 88-88 and forced a second overtime period.

By now Bayern was without Obst – who suffered a foot injury – and Bolmaro, and then it also lost Serge Ibaka to his fifth foul. Undermanned, exhausted and up against the energy of nearly 12,000 fans, the game seemed to be slipping away as Timothe Luwawu-Cabarrot scored all of ASVEL’s points in a 7-2 run, making it 95-90 with just over 2 minutes left.

### Leaning on the three-ball

Bayern’s answer, again, came from beyond the arc. Giffey struck from deep and then Sylvain Francisco – who had previously made virtually no impact – did the same for a 97-97 tie. Paris Lee connected from behind the arc for ASVEL, but Francisco did so once more, this time with 18 seconds left to make it 100-100.

And when Joffrey Lauvergne was called for an offensive foul as he tried to score a game-winner for ASVEL with 2 seconds left, the end was finally in sight. Giffey split his free throws, there was no time for ASVEL to do anything, and an incredible game was won.

Bayern’s victory was down to resilience, depth, spirit... but most importantly, a drastic improvement in three-point shooting. After making just 4 of its first 21 attempts, the German team knocked down 11 of the next 19 with six different players hitting at least twice from beyond the arc. Without those three-point makes, the celebrations would undoubtedly have been on ASVEL’s side.

The Real Madrid forward got off to an impressive start by scoring his team’s first 6 points with back-to-back triples. He finished the first quarter with 11 points and ended the game with 26.

Coming from a game against AS Monaco, where Real Madrid cruised past its opponent but he didn’t manage to score, Hezonja bounced back and recorded season-highs in both points and PIR (25). The 28-year-old went 5-for-7 on two-pointers and 5-for-6 from beyond the arc. He also downed 4 rebounds and registered 2 steals to help at both ends.

“I enjoy playing basketball, helping my teammates,” Hezonja said in the flash interview after the game. “I want to see Real Madrid win every game, every trophy and that’s why I’m here.”

Despite missing key players Sterling Brown, Matt Thomas and Louis Olinde, ALBA demonstrated on the floor that it travelled to Spain to play its basketball against the reigning champion. Real Madrid was leading from start to finish, but ALBA showed character on the floor and stayed close after two quarters.

“We said that we had to speed the game up a bit more at halftime and we know that they were going to come back into the game because they are a good team that fought with the resources \[they had\], because today they had some injuries,” Mateo said after the game. “But they are always dangerous, so we had to prevent situations, use everybody, and everybody scored, which is good.”

Dzanan Musa came off the bench for the first time after the break to score 11 of Real Madrid's 23 points in the third quarter and allow them to put the game to bed. He was one of the 12 Real Madrid players who recorded at least 3 points each on Thursday night.

“There is no bottom-team in the EuroLeague,” Hezonja added. “They are all serious teams, playing extremely well. As I said at halftime, we had to go out, do the basics and focus on details. We did this in the second half. Dzanan also came on. He was ready and he gave us a push.”

Real Madrid circulated the ball smoothly at times, with all players getting involved and offering some great spectacle to the home crowd. Facundo Campazzo and Sergio Rodriguez had 13 and 10 assists, respectively, this being the first time in Turkish Airlines EuroLeague history that two teammates reached double digits in assists. The hosts registered a season-high 32 assists, which is also the fourth-best mark in club history. *Los Blancos* will dispute two Turkish Airlines EuroLeague games next week, as they first play at Maccabi Playtika Tel Aviv on Tuesday in a Round 6 postponed duel and then travel to Turkey, where they’ll face Fenerbahce Beko Istanbul on Thursday night.

Virtus Bologna beat Fenerbahçe Basketball 87-79 in Round 10 of the 2023-24 EuroLeague season, with Toko Shengelia, Daniel Hackett, Ognjen Dobric and Devontae Cacok combining to outshine the heroics of Johnathan Motley.

Virtus Segafredo Bologna relied on a wide range of weapons to [carve out an 87-79 home win over Fenerbahce Beko Istanbul](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/euroleague/news/live-blog-virtus-bologna-vs-fenerbahce-basketball/) in Round 10 of the 2023-24 Turkish Airlines EuroLeague Regular Season on Thursday night. The Italian side had more individuals who stepped up to the plate, cancelling out a valiant solo effort from the visiting team’s towering center Johnathan Motley.

The physically dominant yet good-natured big man racked up 25 points and 8 boards for Fenerbahce, but the supporting cast faltered, especially the backcourt as the visitors shot a miserable 5-of-24 from downtown. At the other end, Toko Shengelia led the charge with 15 points, 8 boards and 5 assists, doing damage all over the court.

Fenerbahce also wasn’t helped by the ejection of its head coach Dimitris Itoudis, who was given his marching orders by the officials after picking up a double technical foul for loud protests over what he perceived to be an offensive foul by Shengelia in the third quarter.

### Virtus on the rise, Fenerbahce sliding

But Fenerbahce can have few complaints over the manner in which the Georgian forward marshalled Virtus to its fifth successive home win, with the outcome also condemning Fenerbahce to its fourth straight loss in Europe’s premier club basketball competition.

“As the coach \[Luca Banchi\] says, it’s about the personality and the mentality we play with,” Shengelia said in a flash courtside interview after the game.

“It’s our identity to fight in every game and I am really proud of my team. We knew we had to be smart defensively and at the same time we created options for ourselves on offense.”

### A team effort from Virtus

Daniel Hackett chipped in with 14 points and 6 assists for Virtus, Ognjen Dobric added 11 points and Devontae Cacok also personified the home team’s roster depth as he posted 10 points and 7 rebounds.

“It was an incredible effort and we stepped up the defense very impressively in the second half,” commented Coach Banchi.

“We limited their offensive efficiency to a great extent and we also shared the ball with a lot of humility on offense. We were able to control the rhythm and find the best solutions. It’s difficult to beat Virtus Bologna here.”

Hackett added: “We had a good mindset against a team which is on paper one of the favorites to reach the Final Four. We played great team basketball and stayed together through some tough stretches. Motley was a force inside, but we adjusted and played as a team.”

Progressing Virtus aim to strengthen its position in the playoffs places when welcoming stuttering Fenerbahce, which has dropped its last three decisions while battling a spate of injuries. The long-range threats of Toko Shengelia and Scottie Wilbekin could prove crucial to the outcome.

### Calathes wrote his name further into the history books

The one bright spot for Fenerbahce was that veteran playmaker Nick Calathes, one of three players who returned to action from injuries, enjoyed a rare milestone. The 34-year-old scored 8 points to surpass the 3,000-point mark, in addition to entering the top 10 in all-time PIR, but those accomplishments will surely be scant consolation after Fenerbahe’s skid continued.

In Round 11, high-flying Virtus visits Bayern Munich while under-pressure Fenerbahce hosts reigning champ Real Madrid, still the only unbeaten team in the competition with a 9-0 record after Thursday’s comprehensive 99-75 home drubbing of ALBA Berlin.
