Johannes Thiemann has been the shining light for ALBA with 13.4 points per game, and he will be vital for the German team's hopes of causing a road upset on Friday.

Three games under head coach Dusko Ivanovic, three wins for Baskonia Vitoria Gasteiz. But after two last-second victories, Coach Ivanovic's squad dismissed FC Barcelona with ease in Round 8 on Wednesday night, triumphing 94-71 to improve to 4-4 on the season.

It was Baskonia's largest-ever win over Barcelona and it could have been even more convincing, because the hosts held a 30-point margin with 2 minutes to go. In the end, Baskonia had to make do with a 23-point win, which certainly led to a celebratory atmosphere at Buesa Arena afterward.

"I think we have connected and were firing on all cylinders," Baskonia guard Markus Howard said after this win.

"Tonight, I thought we were great from start to finish. We had a great plan and executed."

### Plenty of scoring for Baskonia

Howard led all scorers with a season-high 26 points, while Codi Miller-McIntyre also had the best game of his rookie EuroLeague season, with 20 points and 7 assists. Chima Moneke scored 19 points off the bench in a resounding victory.

In fact, the combined 65 points scored by Baskonia's trio is almost as much as the entire Barcelona team. With the likes of Howard, Miller-McIntyre and Moneke playing like this, and Baskonia having won three games on the bounce under Coach Ivanovic, the only way is up for the Spanish side.

Baskonia's trio were too much for Barcelona

"When you have three guys who play like \[they did\] tonight, it is easy to play,” Ivanovic said, although he refused to take the credit or celebrate the win too much.

"Tonight was good, but we will see \[what happens in\] the next game. It is a long \[season\]."

However, it might be as simple as a matter of belief and confidence, as Ivanovic has breathed life into Baskonia since returning after Round 5.

"Leading up to the game, Coach was telling us if our mindset and attitude is right, we can beat anybody,” Howard explained. "We really put it together."

The only down period of the game for Baskonia was the early part of the third quarter, when they allowed Barcelona a 5-15 run. So, a 26-point halftime lead was cut to 16.

Still, it was a big cushion and after an Ivanovic-called timeout, Baskonia responded and th visitors never came closer.

Next on the menu for Baskonia will be a road game against LDLC ASVEL Villeurbanne, another team that changed coaches already this season, and has a changed energy about them. It will also be a chance for Baskonia get to a winning record for the first time this season.

FC Bayern Munich entered its Round 7 game against Partizan Mozzart Bet Belgrade on a four-game losing streak and needing to turn things around. Coach Pablo Laso opted to give Neils Giffey his first start of the season alongside Carsen Edwards and Leandro Bolmaro in the starting lineup.

Edwards struggled at the beginning of the season, posting a negative PIR in four of his first five games. Things have changed in the last three games, however, in which Edwards averaged 18.0 points and a PIR of 16.0.

### Bayern's backcourt stepping up

Edwards was sharp against Partizan, getting 21 points, 4 rebounds, 3 assists and 6 fouls drawn for a PIR of 23. When Partizan built a double-digit lead, Bayern found answers from Bolmaro and Sylvain Francisco, who gave Bayern a big boost off the bench. Francisco had 17 points, matching his season-high, 6 assists and a PIR of 17.

Bolmaro did a little bit of everything to make sure his team had a good chance to win: 9 points, 2 rebounds, 4 assists and 3 steals. When Partizan rallied from a double-digit margin to get within 85-84 in the next-to-last minute, Francisco stepped up with a critical three-point play and Bolmaro sealed the outcome in style with a one-handed slam. Speaking of guards, Coach Laso gave 17-year-old talent Ivan Kharchenkov some playing time in this game, showing that he is not afraid of giving young players opportunities.

"I think that's important for us, to try to get a new start, so I am happy for our guys but it is a long way to go. I think \[the key was\] trying to play the game the right way, take shots that were open for me," Edwards said after the game. "We can celebrate right now but next, we have to be ready for the next one."

"It is good to win. We had four losses in a row, so for us to be able to win this game, it was really good. And I feel I had the opportunity to get some points and create for my teamamtes. For me, it was a good opportunity to do what I usually do, and yes, we got the win," Francisco added. "We played hard defense, too, so I am really happy right now."

Shooting the ball better made the difference, too. Bayern buried 13 of 28 three-pointers (81.3%) and limited Bayern to just 8 of 27 shooting from beyond the arc (29.6%). Bayern outrebounded Partizan 39-25, pulling down 13 offensive boards and allowing Partizan to get just 3.

It wasn’t pretty and it wasn’t convincing — in fact, you could find it under the dictionary definition of ‘winning ugly’ — but Panathinaikos Athens showed that it is starting to develop the right mentality by overcoming Zalgiris Kaunas, 73-71, on Wednesday night.

The difficulty of the triumph is made obvious by one very straightforward statistic: Panathinaikos never led by more than one possession during the entire game, reaching its maximum lead of 3 points on two occasions late in the final period, 67-64 and 71-68.

### Finding a winning habit

But the overhauled Panathinaikos roster, which contains a remarkable 12 new players along with new head coach Ergin Ataman, will only care about one statistic: the win.

Developing chemistry among an entirely new team is not at all easy, especially when that demand comes within the ultra-competitive environment of the Turkish Airlines EuroLeague. So Panathinaikos can be forgiven for the lack of fluency and rhythm that characterized its offensive performance, and commended for its never-say-die spirit which allowed the team to win the final 5 minutes 11-7, eventually enough for the win.

In a meeting of the Greens, an inconsistent Panathinaikos group enter a run of three consecutive games in Athens and strive to make that count against a stuttering Zalgiris roster that has claimed two of its three wins on the road, yet have lost their last three European outings in a row.

One major contribution to the outcome — in the end — was free-throw shooting. Panathinaikos was awful from the foul line in the first 25 minutes, making just 9 of its first 19 attempts. But then, with both teams getting lots of trips to the line in the decisive final stages, collective focus was finally applied and free throws were converted: 9 of the last 12 attempts were successful, with the last of those misses intentional as Marius Grigonis ran out the clock right at the end.

### Getting over the line

The Panathinaikos leaders did not shy away from the reality of their performance, with Coach Ataman admitting: “We made a lot of mistakes but this is EuroLeague so every game is difficult. Offensively we did not play our best game, but it’s okay.”

Backcourt orchestrator Kostas Sloukas also acknowledged this was far from a classic, accepting: “We didn’t play well, especially in the first quarter when we were strangled by their aggressive defense.”

But the final, more positive, word came from top scorer Dinos Mitoglou, who made 4 of his 5 three-point attempts in his total of 19 points. “We’re building something good here,” he said. “It takes time but we’re on a great road and we have to continue and build from this win.”
