Luke Sikma return helped Olympiacos fight through shortened rotation

Olympiacos Piraeus is battling through a tough stretch with injuries to key players, but it was the return of major offseason addition [Luke Sikma](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/euroleague/players/luke-sikma/006589/) who [helped the Reds fight past Maccabi Playtika Tel Aviv](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/euroleague/game-center/2023-24/maccabi-playtika-tel-aviv-olympiacos-piraeus/E2023/66/) to snap a two-game losing skid. 

Olympiacos had a great offensive first half and then slumped to just 28 points in the final 20 minutes but still managed to fend off Maccabi 74-79 to move back to .500 at 4-4.

The Greek side came into the game missing star big man Nikola Milutinov as well as veteran guard Shaquielle McKissic both to injuries. Head coach Georgios Bartzokas’s rotation got even shorter when Nigel Williams-Goss went down with a right leg injury midway through the second quarter. 

And then Alec Peters was suddenly out of the game with 3 minutes left in the third quarter as he picked up a fourth foul and was immediately hit with a technical foul to finish his night as he was leading the team in scoring at that point and Olympiacos ahead 46-60. 

Luka Sikma made an impact for Olympiacos in his return

“We have a shorter rotation because of injuries to Milutinov and McKissic and then we lost Williams-Goss in the first half. And then we lost Alec Peters with a foul and technical foul. And our short rotation was even shorter. But we managed to win,” Bartzokas said. “This win is very important for us, especially after the two painful losses to Fenerbahce and Baskonia on the final possession.”

Moustapha Fall played a major role in the game, picking up 10 points, 6 rebounds and 4 assists in 35 minutes of action.

“We were short-handed. We had injuries and players who got fouled out. We need to win every game now. We just have to fight to do it. It happens what is going to happen,” said the big man.

One of the biggest silver linings in all the injury news was the return to action of Luke Sikma. The big man played his first game since Round 3 as he was out with a leg injury. 

“Luke did a great job in his return back. Shout out to 43 really coming back and giving us a lift,” said Thomas Walkup about the American forward. 

Sikma is known for his versatility and also unselfishness and the 34-year-old scored 8 points on 4-of-6 shooting to go with 4 rebounds, 1 assist and 1 steal in 10:39 minutes. 

“We were lucky that Sikma came back. He gave us 10 important minutes in this game,” added the Olympiacos coach. 

Bartzokas is definitely happy to have Sikma back in the mix. Now he wants the others to get back to health.

“Hopefully we will have everybody back very soon so we can evaluate what we can do,” he said. 

Until then, Olympiacos will need more fights like against Maccabi to get victories.

Anadolu Efes S.K. won its first road game of the 2023-24 EuroLeague season by downing AS Monaco Basket 82-89 in Round 8, with Erdem Can's side showing signs that it is back on the right track after a turbulent start to the campaign.

Following Ergin Ataman and Vasilije Micic’s departures last summer, Anadolu Efes Istanbul brought in a new coach and some new players as it set about rebuilding ahead of the 2023-24 Turkish Airlines EuroLeague season. Erdem Can’s side got off to a slow start, winning just three of its first seven games and losing all its three of its road contests by an average of 15.7 points.

Efes was in need of a statement win that would serve as a boost in morale and a potential springboard to bounce back after a few unconvincing displays in this first stretch of the season.

### A confidence-boosting result

The Turkish outfit took to the Salle Gaston Medecin court with a point to prove and pulled out its finest display this term, having [scored a joint season-high 89 points to beat AS Monaco](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/euroleague/news/euroleague-live-blog-as-monaco-basket-vs-anadolu-efes-sk/). Considering that it did so against the league’s third-best defense, which had given up an average of 74.1 points heading into Round 8, Efes’s accomplishment becomes even more impressive.

“We were struggling early on in the season on the road, so \[it is fantastic that\] we were able to come here and get a win against a team that was on a great winning streak – a team that has proven that they are of a Final Four caliber,” Efes guard Shane Larkin noted after the game.

“We’ve got a lot of new players, a new coach, new system. For us to get a win like this on the road is huge. It’s a big stepping stone and now we just need to continue to grow. This is a huge win for our chemistry and now we’ve got to continue and get better day by day.”

### Sharing the ball

Efes’s 24 assists on the night was its joint-best mark this season. Importantly for Coach Can, star players Larkin, Rodrigue Beaubois, Darius Thompson and Will Clyburn demonstrated that they’re gelling more and more on the court, having recorded at least 4 assists apiece.

“We’ve been trying to build up our system, our culture, so \[this win\] is going to be a great tool for us,” Can said in the post-game flash interview. “Offensively we were good, sharing the ball and making good decisions. I’m happy because today we were all together and we were really focused.”

Red-hot Monaco aim for a sixth straight win against an Efes team hoping a victory over Zalgiris proves to be the start of a renaissance. There are stars galore in the backcourt as Mike James and Elie Okobo go up against Shane Larkin and Darius Thompson, but whose talents will come to the fore here?

Impressive ball movement led to open looks and Efes capitalized on its smooth circulation to record a solid 22-for-34 (64.7%) from inside the arc and 13-for-30 (43.3%) on triples. Can was a happy man after the game, as he saw his group offer glimpses of his philosophy on the court for large parts of the contest, demonstrating that they are gradually understanding his system better.

“This win was very important for us because we are in a period where we are trying to adapt to our system and \[get to\] know each other better,” Can added in the post-game press conference. “So this was a great chance for us to bring our game to another level. But this is such a long marathon and, in this marathon, we won \[just\] one game.”

Indeed, the EuroLeague marathon continues, as Efes visits EA7 Emporio Armani Milan on Thursday. It remains to be seen whether the Turkish side will manage to build on Tuesday’s performance and register consecutive road wins for the first time this season, but there were certainly plenty of positive signs to take from its game in Monaco.

Olympiacos B.C. grabbed 18 offensive rebounds and committed only 12 turnovers en route to a victory over Maccabi Tel Aviv in Belgrade on Tuesday in Round 8 of the EuroLeague Regular Season.

Offensive rebounds, limiting turnovers got Olympiacos back in win column

Olympiacos Piraeus may have been missing its main center and a key guard, but the team used a superb sense of crashing the offensive glass and an effort to limit turnovers to defeat Maccabi Playtika Tel Aviv.

Olympiacos grabbed 18 offensive rebounds and committing only 12 turnovers in a 74-79 victory over Maccabi to improve its record to 4-4.

Olympiacos did not come into the game as a stellar team in terms of offensive rebounds, averaging just 9.7 per game.

But the whole team worked hard to gain extra possessions, with captain Kostas Papanikolaou grabbing 4 offensive rebounds. Four other players added two boards off the offensive glass, and Olympiacos did a good job utilizing those opportunities - putting together 19 second chance points.

The Reds can use those points as they have struggled to score this season. The victory was just the third time this season that Olympiacos passed the 77-point mark. Head coach Georgios Bartzokas has seen his team limited to even 53 and 68 points thus far this season.

Another key to the game was Olympiacos committing only 12 turnovers. That was right in line with its season average of 12.6 turnovers per game. But it was a good number considering Maccabi’s defense.

The Israeli champs came into the game leading the league in steals at 8.7 and turnovers forced at 16.7 per game. Olympiacos withstood the Maccabi pressure, giving up just 5 Maccabi steals in the game.

Thomas Walkup did a good job running the show with 4 assists and just 2 turnovers in 33 minutes of action. And Olympiacos was helped by Moustapha Fall being able to help distribute the ball. The Reds’ giant center dished out 4 assists as well and did not commit a single turnover in 35 minutes of play.

With the offense still not really humming, Olympiacos will need to find a variety of ways to win games, as it did on Tuesday.

Real Madrid Baloncesto flipped the script in the second half to beat Valencia Basket Club 73-76, with Walter Tavares managing to keep Brandon Davies quiet in the third and fourth quarters after a stellar first half.

Real Madrid stayed perfect in the 2023-24 Turkish Airlines EuroLeague Regular Season, but only after a real fight against Valencia Basket on Tuesday night at La Fonteta. The reigning champion ended up enjoying the better of a true game of two halves by greatly improving its defensive efforts after the break and [eventually prevailing 73-76](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/euroleague/news/euroleague-live-blog-valencia-basket-club-vs-real-madrid-baloncesto/).

One player and one player alone dominated the opening two quarters. Valencia center Brandon Davies was simply unstoppable, reaching 20 points with only one missed shot and adding 2 assists and a blocked shot.

### Davies vs. Tavares

Many of those points were scored over Walter Tavares, who seemed positionally unsure of himself after seeing Davies stretch the floor to drain a three-pointer on Valencia’s very first possession of the game. Unable to decide whether he should stick or twist, Tavares fell a long way below his usual defensive dominance in the opening two quarters, and Davies took full advantage with a dynamite display containing baskets of pretty much every variety.

But true class will always come through, and Tavares clearly used the half-time interval to decide ‘enough is enough’ because he was a different proposition in the second half. He blocked 4 shots in the third quarter alone, including 2 from Davies as the man who couldn’t miss in the first half was rendered rather impotent in the second. Valencia’s big man scored just 2 points after the break, going from 9-of-10 field goal shooting to 1-of-7 as Real roared back.

That symbolized the change in Real’s defensive effectiveness, which reduced Valencia’s offensive output from 49 points before the interval to less than half that total – 24 – in the final two periods.

Unsurprisingly, Real attributed the victory to that defensive improvement, with Facu Campazzo, who scored the team’s last 4 points of the game, saying: “We changed in the second half. We did a great job on them, only 24 points in the second half. We played good defense and then made the right decisions on offense.”

With Jared Harper missing through injury, more pressure may be heaped on Valencia guard Chris Jones when confronting the mighty Los Blancos, who lead the league with 88 points on average, including four players averaging double-digit scoring and Guerschon Yabusele topping the charts.

Proud head coach Chus Mateo added: “In the first half, Davies did a great job and we couldn’t stop him. In the second half, we were able to stop him and their options inside the paint. We fixed all the mistakes we were making in the first half. 

“We had to fight until the end. They are playing great, especially here at home, and for us it’s very important to continue at this level. We have to keep the same mentality.”

Virtus Segafredo Bologna continued its good start to the 2023-24 Turkish Airlines EuroLeague Regular Season with an 86-79 home win over EA7 Emporio Armani Milan in the Derby d’Italia in Round 8, largely thanks to an unfancied trio which came off the bench.

Milan dominated most of the first half on the back of a sound performance from Shavon Shields, but Virtus gained the upper hand before the interval after Awudu Abass rocked the visitors with lethal three-point shooting while Ognjen Dobric came up with a dazzling all-round display.

Abass scored 11 of his 14 points in the opening two periods, while Dobric amassed 8 points to go with 4 rebounds, 2 assists and as many steals. Milan threw away its lead and trailed 45-40 at halftime, but there seemed to be a way back as the visitors scored the opening 6 points in the third quarter.

However, they were undone by a magnificent second-half performance from Iffe Lundberg. The Dane lit up the contest with 19 points, all of which came after the break, and 7 of them came in crunch time. A three-pointer, a slam-dunk and a pair of free throws meant Lundberg netted his team’s last 7 points, forcing Milan into submission.

“We knew coming into the game that it would be tough against our great rival Milan,” Lundberg said in a flash courtside interview after the game. “We talked in the locker room \[at halftime\] that we would need to keep the same resilience in the second half. We were up by 5 and then we slowed down a little bit. Energy was the key and whenever I was on the court, I brought that to help the team win.”

Virtus head coach Luca Banchi was delighted with his side’s win. “This win means a lot because we all knew it would take something special to beat Milan,” he said. “They approached the game with incredible focus, but we responded in a great way. A big effort from everybody and now the most important thing is to recuperate and maintain our focus.”

Visiting head coach Ettore Messina, meanwhile, lamented how his team has made a habit of throwing away leads. “I want to congratulate Virtus for winning a tough game and I want to thank Luca \[Banchi\] for a classy gesture ahead of the game to walk on to the court together with me,” Messina said during the post-game press conference.

“Once again, we wasted our lead and this must be the sixth or seventh game that we’ve lost in the fourth quarter. Always the same way. Lundberg was of course the key, but poor defense in the fourth quarter cost us the game.”

Teodosic, Yago made the difference in Round 8

Fenerbahce came into this game without four rotation players and Zvezda also faced early injury problems when starting point guard Shabazz Napier left the game 68 seconds after the tip-off.

Yago dos Santos immediately came off the bench and made things happen, feeding Joel Bolomboy for an alley-oop slam, getting a steal that allowed Luka Mitrovic to dunk at the other end and hitting a three-pointer that gave Zvezda a 22-13 margin. Late in the first quarter, Milos Teodosic came off the bench and immediately delivered, sinking a three-pointer over center Georgios Papagiannis to fix the score at 25-16 after 10 minutes.

Teodosic does not need much to get going, and soon added his second three-pointer to break the game open, 35-19. Teodosic and dos Santos combined for 22 first-half points. When Teodosic found Bolomboy for a buzzer-beating layup, Zvezda led 45-26 at the break.

Zvezda had to face more point guard injury struggles, as dos Santos hit a floater but fell down awkwardly, leaving the game for good. Teodosic kept pacing Zvezda without needing to send any of his trademark impossible assists to dominate the game. This time, he had 18 points in less than 20 minutes, burying 4 of his 5 attempts from beyond the arc.

"It is a good victory. We played good, so that's the way we need to play in the future, to play hard on defense," Teodosic said after the game. "We are talented and can score against anybody. We need to be more focused on our defense in every game."

Yago Dos Santos and Milos Teodosic led Crvena Zvezda Meridianbet Belgrade to an 87-56 home win over Fenerbahce Beko Istanbul in Round 8.

Asked about his great performance, Teodosic reminded everyone it is not him, but Zvezda getting wins: "I don't like to talk about myself. This is a team game, a team win, and I am really happy that I am a part of this group of people, great persons and great players."

Nemanja Nedovic had a strong all-around performance, finishing the game with 12 points, 4 rebounds and 5 assists. Zvezda ended up with 18 assists and just 10 turnovers. On the other hand, Fenerbahce had 13 assists and 12 turnovers. Three-point shooting was the other key to the game: Zvezda buried 13 of 27 shots from downtown (48.1%) and Fenerbahce hit just a third of its 24 attempts from beyond the arc.
