The heroics of AS Monaco guard Elie Okobo in Round 14 of the 2022-23 Turkish Airlines EuroLeague Regular Season saw him earn applause from royalty in the stands. With Monaco tied 89-89 at home to ALBA Berlin, the 25-year-old Okobo drained a stepback three-pointer with time expiring to give the French side a 92-89 victory.

It was just another example of the Monaco guard’s progression as a player, as he took over the responsibility while usual go-to man Mike James watched on. ALBA had focused most of its defense around stopping James all night long, but Okobo was ready to stick a dagger in their hearts with his walk-off triple.

“We were struggling all game long with the combined defense from ALBA, with the main idea being to take Mike out of the game – and they actually did it pretty good,” admits Monaco head coach Sasa Obradovic.

“They tied the game and we had a timeout. It’s kind of like the moment of truth. It’s time to win the game,” states Okobo.

“We wanted him to \[have the final shot\] and I really have a lot of trust in the player. I know he can do it,” adds Coach Obradovic.

As they say, the rest is history. Okobo carried the ball up the floor, swung the ball to Jaron Blossomgame and, upon receiving it back, he sat down then-ALBA guard Maodo Lo before stepping back to nail the three-pointer from the EuroLeague logo.

“When Jaron passed me the ball back, I just did a stepback,” Okobo explains. “I just grabbed the ball, jabbed left. Without hesitation, I did my move. It’s just when the ball is in the air, I was like, ‘Man, I just don’t miss that.’”

“As a player, that’s what you dream of: a crazy move, make the defender fall, game-winner with no time left,” says Monaco guard Jordan Loyd. That’s like an ideal dream situation. Elie has a lot swag to his game, so I wasn’t too surprised he did that.”

It was quite the moment for Okobo, who ended up playing an important role as Monaco reached the 2023 Final Four for the first time in its history. Expectation levels are even higher for the French club this season, and Okobo will no doubt be hoping to add another game-winner or two to his resumé in the 2023-24 campaign.

Out of the blue came Larentzakis, who galvanized the home crowd and his team with successive three-pointers, which rattled the visitors and gave Olympiacos a new lease of life. He scored 15 fourth-quarter points, one less than the entire Partizan team, before inspiring towering center Nikola Milutinov to join the party against his former club.

### Olympiacos found an extra gear, despite absences

One would have expected Partizan to have more left in the tank in overtime as an injury-hit Olympiacos was missing three key players in Luke Sikma, Ignas Brazdeikis and Shaquielle McKissic. Roared on by a passionate home crowd, however, the hosts were left the last men standing at the end of a captivating clash which had all the makings of a playoff blockbuster.

The victory could not have come at a better time for Olympiacos, which was on the ropes after back-to-back defeats to FC Barcelona and EA7 Emporio Armani Milan. The Reds bounced back superbly to improve to a 2-2 record, while Partizan slipped to 1-3.

Fittingly, Larentzakis finished as the night’s top scorer with 19 points, but he kept his feet on the ground in his post-game comments. “The most important thing is that we found a way to come back after being 14 points down,” he said. “The crowd gave us the energy, as they always do.”

Milutinov added: “We never give up, we always try to find a way to win the game. We put ourselves in a terrible situation \[with\] how we opened the second half. We cannot allow this if we want to be a serious contender and a serious team.”

Olympiacos can now look forward to a Round 5 home game against Anadolu Efes Istanbul with renewed confidence. Despite allowing Chima Moneke to score a career-high 32 points and Marcus Howard to add 26, Zalgiris showed great hustle on defense, with Manek dominating the boards. The EuroLeague rookie registered a game-high 14 rebounds to secure his first double-double in the competition in 28:00 minutes of action.

“The way we played on offense and then on defense, finding the way to get stops and rebounds, not giving them second chances, I think helps us in the end,” added the former University of North Carolina standout.

Zalgiris head coach Kazys Maksvytis asked his players to control the pace of the game and they delivered on the court. Baskonia did attempt a couple of comebacks in the second half, but the visitors stepped up to remain in charge.

“The team showed character and fought until the end,” Maksvytis noted. “I think that we were in control for more or less all of the game. Some moments we lost control and Baskonia came back, but it’s hard to win here. I’m very happy.”

### Rolands Smits is another who impressed

Meanwhile, Rolands Smits scored a team-high 21 points, going 2-for-4 on two pointers, 3-for-4 on triples and a perfect 8-for-8 from the free-throw line. Yet, in his post-game interview he stressed that it wasn’t an individual performance – instead some great basketball produced by the team – that  clinched the victory for Zalgiris.

“We played as a team,” Smits declared. “We shared the ball very well. We played physical basketball and we got the win. They came back, but then we realized that we need to go harder and stick together as a team.”

Zalgiris didn’t manage to get something from its road game at Real Madrid on Tuesday, but it pulled off a dominant display two days later in Vitoria-Gasteiz. Thursday night’s visitors circulated the ball well, found many open looks and were sublime from behind the arc, going 14-for-21 (66.7% 3FG) on three-pointers.

With its 21 assists in the game against Baskonia, Zalgiris demonstrated that it can achieve great things through team basketball. Many may have underestimated Maksvytis’s side, but Zalgiris has shown that it is once again a legit playoff contender this season.

The hosts led 49-39 late in the second quarter but a stunning 2-20 run by Partizan, triggered by 11 quickfire points from power forward Alen Smailagic in the third quarter, had turned the game on its head.

Missing the injured Luke Sikma, Ignas Brazdeikis and Shaquielle McKissic, Olympiacos appeared to run out of steam after the break before it dug deep into its resources and forced what seemed to be the final twist in regulation.

However, the visitors had nothing left in the tank when the chips were down. Partizan team captain Kevin Punter nailed a baseline jumper to tie the score 91-91 but also committed some costly errors down the stretch. ### How the coaches viewed the game

Partizan head coach Zeljko Obradovic lamented over his team’s failure to get the job done after the visitors had fought back to take a commanding lead. “I believe we missed a great opportunity to win tonight, but I still have to congratulate Olympiacos,” Obradovic said during the post-game press conference.

“In the first half we struggled with turnovers and their offensive rebounds, but I am very happy how we reacted in the second half. Then both our big men – \[Frank\] Kaminsky and Smailagic – fouled out and that was a big problem for us. There were lots of crucial moments in the game, but we missed the two big guys in the latter stages of the fourth quarter and overtime.”

Olympiacos tactician Georgios Bartzokas was happy to have snatched a win amid a grueling schedule comprising four games in just six days for his men. “The team was really exhausted, especially because our rotation came down to just eight or nine players,” he stated. “We showed a lot of heart and character when we were down by 14, and this kind of victory will be a morale-boosting one.

“The physical effort we made led to lapses in concentration, but congratulations to the players and the fans, as well as to Partizan, of course, because they played a good game.”

If you’ve been watching the EuroLeague for any period of time, you already know exactly how one of his main contributions to the action went down. Yep, that old classic. The final seconds of the first half, Real with possession, give the ball to Llull, dribble, stepback, high-arching shot as the buzzer sounds and bingo, the *mandarina*, executed to perfection once again.

And the veteran playmaker was by no means finished. After sitting on the bench during the third quarter to watch teammate Facu Campazzo classily advance towards a double-double, Llull decided that the opening moments of the fourth quarter was his time to take over.

He started the quarter with a driving layup, then added his fourth three-pointer of the night before draining his fifth not long after, completing a personal 8-0 run in 90 seconds to take his team’s lead from a slender 67-61 to a commanding 75-61, ensuring there would be no Milan comeback.

### A EuroLeague legend

Llull, of course, has nothing to prove. A veteran of 378 EuroLeague appearances over 17 seasons, his place in European basketball’s history books is already assured – particularly after his heroic title-winning basket in last season’s EuroLeague Championship Game against Olympiacos.

But the 35-year-old remains a ferocious competitor who is hungry for more. And by downing Milan with 19 points in 21 minutes on Thursday, he showed that he is also still capable of delivering much more. 

He’s also enjoying it. “It’s fun when you play like this, running fastbreaks and shooting threes,” he told EuroLeague TV after the game. "The crowd comes to enjoy the game and we won, so we’re happy.”

After a performance like that, so he should be.

Fenerbahce trailed 25-43 in the second quarter but came back to win the game as the hosts allowed just 31 second-half points after conceding 55 in the first 20 minutes.

"We talked in the locker room and changed the mindset drastically. We had to win that game defensively. The \[combined second-half score\] 59-31 says a lot. Offensively we made baskets but that was generated by the defensive mindset that we needed to make stops," Fenerbahce coach Dimitris Itoudis said.

The turnaround was historic for Fenerbahce, which had twice rallied from 17-point deficits - in 2021-22 against Zalgiris Kaunas and 2022-23 versus FC Barcelona.

"I hope this second half can be a wakeup call for us, a turnaround point on how we have to approach games," the coach added.

A major contributor for the Fenerbahce cause was Biberovic, who poured in a career-high 17 points including 5-of-8 three-point shooting to go with 4 rebounds - 2 of them from the offensive glass. His index rating of 12 also tied his career-best from January 2022 versus Zalgiris Kaunas while eclipsing the 13 points he scored in December 2020 against ALBA Berlin.

Biberovic was not included on the roster in the first two games of the season but amassed 6 points, 1 rebound and 1 assist in the Round 3 win over Panathinaikos Athens.

"As we all know, Fenerbahce is a really big club. We all have dreams and it's upon us to stay ready for our chance and if we get our chance, we really have to use it. I'm glad I am doing my best right now. I'll continue to play like this throughout the season," the forward promised.

Biberovic will not turn 23 until late January and he is already in his sixth season of playing EuroLeague games for Fenerbahce, appearing in 51 games - topped by 16 games played in 2020-21.

Biberovic’s historic performance in Round 4 in a history-making comeback should give Coach Itoudis even more confidence in the young forward.
