Nicolo Melli of EA7 Emporio Armani Milan is the second player to step into the spotlight as part of the "Remember The Why" series, a Euroleague Basketball and Adidas collaboration in which Turkish Airlines EuroLeague stars discuss their personal journeys.

A member of the 2,000-point, 1,300-rebound club in the EuroLeague, the 268-game veteran opened up about his basketball journey that started at six years old and has seen him become, at age 32, one of the best European players of his generation.

It was not a simple journey for him to get to this point, however. Melli was named on Reggiana's bench for the first time at the age of 13, yet four years later, just when he was beginning to establish himself in the first team, he suffered a serious ACL injury that threatened to derail his career. However, going through that process reminded Melli about just how much he loves the game.

"That was my big mountain to climb and, when you're young, even sometimes after, you're a little bit cocky, a little bit arrogant," he recalls. "When I broke my ACL, I was just coming off my best game so far. In one week, I went from being on top of the mountain to the bottom of it... That made my love \[for basketball\] even stronger and made me tougher."

Melli made a full recovery from his injury and did enough to earn a move to Milan in 2010, which gave him the opportunity to play in the EuroLeague for the first time. After five seasons in the fashion capital, though, the big man opted to sign for Brose Bamberg of Germany as he went in search of a bigger role.

"I made that decision because, back then when I was in Milan, I had a different role than now," Melli explains. "There is nothing wrong with it, but I was a role player. Bamberg gave me the chance to be one of the main guys on the court, and I wanted to take this kind of responsibility to test myself, to prove also to myself that I could be the guy."

Melli's numbers rose across the board, showing that his decision to join Bamberg had clearly paid dividends, but in the summer of 2017, he had a dilemma. Although he had the chance to go to the NBA, Fenerbahce Beko Istanbul and its coach at the time, Zeljko Obradovic, wanted to see if they could convince Melli to join Italy teammate Gigi Datome at Ulker Sports and Event Hall.

"After five minutes on the phone with \[Obradovic\], I was ready to go into training camp. Boom, pack my stuff, go. You play for certain feelings, for certain emotions and I felt those on that phone call," Melli says. "I chose to go to Fenerbahce and I'm actually very happy and proud that I took that decision. The two years that I had in Fenerbahce were two amazing years."

Following two seasons with Fenerbahce, Melli eventually headed to the NBA for a couple of years, suiting up for the New Orleans Pelicans and the Dallas Mavericks. Then, in 2021, he returned home to Italy and signed for Milan again, an idea that was not originally in his mind but – as was the case with Coach Obradovic and Fenerbahce – Milan head coach Ettore Messina found a way to entice him.

Looking ahead, Melli has already set his sights on how he wants to sign off his career. Back in 1984, Melli's mom won a silver medal with the United States volleyball team at the Olympic Games in Los Angeles. With the Olympics set to return to Los Angeles in 2028, and Italy among the teams who could make it for basketball, Melli hopes that he can end his career by winning a medal, back at the location where his mom made her name.

"Well, the decision of playing sport in my family was pretty easy; it has always been a part of our lives. I felt no pressure at all growing up as the son of my mother," Melli notes. "But, I would love to finish my career in 2028 in the Olympics in Los Angeles. That would be a super romantic way to finish a career. I hope that I can tie my mom with the result – that would be amazing. But, I always say that she is the champion of the family and I'm really proud to be her son."

With the goal of helping children and young adults with a rare form of leukemia, Euroleague Basketball referees in all Turkish Airlines EuroLeague and 7DAYS EuroCup games this week will wear Golden Laces, the color of pediatric cancer, to focus attention on efforts being made throughout the continent to improve treatment and outcomes for young victims of the disease. 

Lucas, the son of one of those Euroleague Basketball referees, Carlos Peruga, is among the 350 children a year in Spain who are diagnosed with acute myeloid or acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL), a type of blood cancer that attacks the immune system. Without personalized and intense immunology treatments, the disease makes victims extremely vulnerable to life-threatening infections and serious bleeding. 

The Golden Laces are a symbol of the efforts of the Spanish foundation Unoentrecienmil (1 in 100,000), which has brought the European-wide ALLtogether treatment program to Spain. ALLTogether establishes an advanced treatment protocol that aims to improve survival and quality of life for children and young adults with ALL.

 

Study groups in a total of 14 countries in Europe seek to improve on the current survival rates of 90% in children and 75% in young adults by combating under-treatment, but also refining protocols to prevent over-treatment, which brings similar risks for survival, secondary cancers and long-term side effects.

We have arrived at the last two-round week of the 2022-23 Turkish Airlines EuroLeague Regular Season and most teams still have plenty to play for. The four who have already clinched playoff berths - Olympiacos Piraeus, Real Madrid, FC Barcelona and AS Monaco - are all trying to secure home-court advantage for their playoff series. As many as 10 other teams are in the fight for the remaining four playoff tickets, but don't expect the bottom four squads to be anything but competitive. Fantasy Challenge tips; Rounds 31-32

[Chris Jones, Valencia Basket](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/euroleague/players/chris-jones/010568/) (13.7 credits) – Jones recently extended his contract until the end of the 2025-26 season and then had a PIR of 26 without putting up big numbers: 17 points and 3 assists. Jones is Valencia's undeniable leader and is keen to keep proving it in a critical week for his team with consecutive road games.

[Dante Exum, Partizan Mozzart Bet Belgrade](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/euroleague/players/dante-exum/011302/) (13.4 credits) – Exum had an up-and-down first half of the season but has been extremely consistent lately with a PIR of at least 8 in each of the last 15 games. He comes off a strong effort against Olympiacos Piraeus in Round 30 with 15 points and a PIR of 16 in a good-as-gold win.

[Marius Grigonis, Panathinaikos Athens](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/euroleague/players/marius-grigonis/002328/) (7.7 credits) – Panathinaikos may be eliminated but expect the proud Greens to keep competing, especially in the Greek derby on Friday night. Over his last three games, Grigonis has averaged 9.7 points on 14-of-15 free throw shooting for a PIR of 13.3. A great option for less than 8 credits!

Fantasy tips, Rounds 31-32: A pivotal week! 

FC Bayern Munich guard Cassius Winston and his family have always had close ties with basketball. Winston regularly played with his father and his two brothers - Khy and Zach - during childhood, and the three brothers had a very close relationship growing up together in Detroit, United States, with a strong bond reinforced by their love for the game.

FC Bayern Munich guard [Cassius Winston](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/euroleague/players/cassius-winston/011940/) and his family have always had close ties with basketball. Winston regularly played with his father and his two brothers - Khy and Zach - during childhood, and the three brothers had a very close relationship growing up together in Detroit, United States, with a strong bond reinforced by their love for the game.

"\[Basketball\] is a part of me, it's a part of what I do, it's a part of who I am, it's a part of me growing up, it's a part of my story," Winston says. "It was more than a game to us, it's part of life."

Basketball was one of the main drivers behind the close relationship that Winston had with his brothers, as they all shared the same passion for hoops. In fact, Cassius, the eldest brother, was able to play at Michigan State University before embarking on a professional career, while his two younger brothers played high-school ball at the University of Detroit Jesuit High.

However, tragedy struck on November 9, 2019, when Zach Winston decided to bring an end to his life.

"Zach was, honestly, the person who was holding us all together," Winston recalls. "In our family, everybody has their own thing; everybody is different in a way. Zach was the one who would always come through and make sure that everybody was laughing, everybody was relaxed, everybody was not stressing too much. He was always going to be there to put a smile on your face, always going to say something goofy, off the wall; just something you're not expecting to keep us levelheaded. 

"You don't really notice it until it's gone, which is the crazy part. But once it's gone, you kind of just feel that void is kind of missing all the time, so that is what he was for us. He was the glue guy. He was the one who kept everybody together, he's the one who kept everybody smiling, everybody laughing, everybody in a good mood. 

"He was my brother, he's still my brother, he's always going to be my brother. He's with me. As long as I'm still walking, breathing and talking, he's going to be right there with me, and it's always going to be that way."

As a way of keeping Zach firmly in his thoughts, Winston goes through a ritual before each game in which he shakes hands with his brother. 

"Before every game, I do a handshake with my brother. I pray and talk to my brother, just to check in," Winston explains. "These 3-4 minutes before the game, everything is still. I've got time to clear my head, I've got time to talk to my brother. I know we're connected; I know that he's still watching; I know that he's still there with me."

Winston still finds sanctuary in basketball when the going gets tough. And his connection to his little brother remains one of his most important moments when focusing before the start of a game, even if it's not easy sometimes.

"I slip and probably will slip again and slip again after that. It's just part of growing and a part of healing," Winston comments. "Some days I don't want to fight, some days I want to give up, but I think about it, I think what they want from me and how he would want me to keep pushing \[...\] so I make sure that my brother's proud."

A celebration of basketball culture where hoops, urban art, streetwear fashion and music all came together as one – Euroleague Off Court: In the Air – proved a resounding success on Friday in Paris, France, with the help of 300 attendees who helped make the night a truly novel experience.

A one-of-kind visual setting that took basketball to the skies provided the backdrop for the streetball players and more than 60 influencers to do their magic in a series of competitions that delighted onlookers and wowed the V.I.P. judges.

Turkish Airlines provided a celestial theme to the venue and took everything to the highest level by adding real cloud generators that had the dunkers looking like they were literally jamming in the heavens.

The motif was completed by adidas and Foot Locker assuring that all 60 participants were dressed for the occasion. The influencers were looking sharp in the all-new Chapter 1 collection by adidas, while the players were taking off in the new Harden vol.7 shoe.

The Parisian basketball community embraced the one-of-a-kind experience as a true homage to their eclectic mix of street culture, style, sounds and slams.

In the men's 2x2 category, Rookicks led his team to the win by taking advantage of special rules that doubled his points at certain moments of the game. Rookicks had to face the winning female team in a decisive shoot out for Final Four tickets that the team led by Helena  Delaruelle finally won.

Yohan Lemay was crowned the G.O.A.T. of the dunk contest by performing a windmill dunk over three people. The jury, including Paris basketball legend Amara Sy, rated his performance the highest.

After that, the guests were free to come and play to decide who would become the one-on-one G.O.A.T. and go home with a €500 voucher from Foot Locker.

Zalgiris has only won one of its last six games against opponents in the top half of the standings, and will be particularly aware of the threat posed by Elie Okobo, who scored 13 points in the last 6 minutes to give Monaco an 84-82 comeback home win over Zalgiris in December.

The Spanish side has suffered a dip in form at exactly the wrong time, losing five of its last six games. Zvezda, meanwhile, showed it has not given up hope of climbing into the top eight by grabbing a determined home win over Baskonia last week with swarming defense. Zvezda faces elimination should it lose this game, while Valencia's chances of making the playoffs would be reduced considerably with another defeat.

League leading Olympiacos (21-9) will go after the victory it needs to secure home-court advantage in the playoffs with a visit from rock-bottom ASVEL (8-22), which has lost nine games in a row. The Reds have won six straight at the Peace and Friendship Stadium and a road victory for ASVEL would surely be one of the shocks of the season. Or perhaps not, because ASVEL did triumph when the teams last met, as Amine Noua's game-winning triple secured a dramatic 77-75 home victory in December.

Round 31 concludes with a modern EuroLeague classic as Real (21-9), which has the incentive of clinching a top-four finish, welcomes a Fenerbahce team (18-12) that could clinch a playoffs berth with a victory – and, just as importantly, keep alive its own hopes of finishing in the top four. Last week's MVP, Guerschon Yabusele, will look to provide the spark for Real with his athleticism and shooting range, while Nigel Hayes-Davis provides the glue for Fenerbahce after only sitting out 41 seconds of last Friday's win over Zalgiris.

The chart above tries to provide some insight into what the answers to those questions might be. Focusing on the last couple months of the season and looking ahead to each team's next four opponents shows which teams are surging and who has the softest landing with their remaining schedules.

Based on the way they have been playing recently, Maccabi Playtika Tel Aviv and Partizan Mozzart Bet Belgrade certainly look like they are in good shape ahead of the end of the regular season. Partizan has been exceptional on the offensive end in recent weeks to go 8-2 over their last 10 games while Maccabi is coming off four consecutive victories including two over teams joining them on the list above. That is particularly notable as perhaps no team in the EuroLeague will have quite as much control over how the remaining weeks of the season play out than Maccabi. 

While Partizan faces three of the league's top four teams to close the year, three of Maccabi's four games come against teams vying for what may be a single postseason bid. Not only does Maccabi control its own destiny as the team at the top of this heap, but it could dictate the fortunes of several others as well.

Maccabi's matchup in Round 32 against EA7 Emporio Armani Milan is especially notable, as the Italian club has been on the rise in recent weeks, winning eight of the last nine. After stumbling out to a 6-15 start, the stars have aligned for Milan to potentially flip the script on what looked like a lost season. Milan's results on the offensive end did not match its process in the early going, but a rise to the mean and the addition of Shabazz Napier has made Milan the team to watch down the stretch. Ettore Messina's troops do not have much margin for error at this point but remain a real threat assuming that they can ride their hot streak to secure victories in three of their last four games.

Virtus Segafredo Bologna has almost no wiggle room to earn a playoffs bid of its own, but is going to be tied up in the postseason drama regardless as the lone team on the list above whose four upcoming games all come against teams immediately above them. Losing four of the last five but playing well in spurts recently – especially on the defensive end – Virtus's consistency will determine how long it can stay on the playoff bubble.

It is going to be fascinating to see how the standings evolve over the next several weeks as this group is likely to provide a fitting conclusion to one of the most competitive EuroLeague seasons ever. With several teams surging to the finish and others just hanging on, its likely to be a photo finish as far as this year's eighth seed is concerned.
