 Fenerbahce outlasts Monaco in OT thriller 

In an thriller to open Round 20, host Fenerbahce Beko Istanbul weathered several comebacks by AS Monaco to finally prevail 98-94 in overtime on Thursday for its third consecutive victory. This one broke part of a second-place tie between four teams, leaving Fenerbahce 13-7 while Monaco fell to 12-8. As a bonus, Fenerbahce swept their season series 2-0 to take a tie-break advantage if needed later in the season. 

Monaco's last of several runs in the game was 0-8 over the last 2 minutes of the fourth quarter to force overtime, where Fener got it right despite continued pressure from the visitors thanks to Nigel Hayes-Davis making big plays and Marko Guduric making sure at the foul line. The winners got 21 points from Scottie Wilbekin, 18 from Hayes-Davis and 17 each from Guduric and Johnathan Motley. Mike James pumped in 23 points, Yakuba Ouattara 19 and Alpha Diallo 13 for Monaco.

Devin Booker's 2 early triples and a slam by Hayes-Davis had Fenerbahce looking comfortable at 14-8 before a 0-9 Monaco run built on James, Donatas Motiejunas and offensive rebounds helped the visitors tie 20-20 after one quarter. Fenerbahce went back in front 27-22 before Ouattara broke the bank with 3 three-pointers in as many tries to flip the scoreboard to 30-43 in Monaco's favor before settling at a 39-47 halftime difference.

By late in the third quarter, with Motley restoring some serious inside presence for Fenerbahce after his first-half foul trouble, the hosts climbed back to go ahead 57-55. But they needed Wilbekin's second straight end-of-quarter basket to tie 60-60 after three quarters. Outtara lifted Monaco in front 60-66 early in the fourth, but Guduric, Motley and Hayes-Davis mounted Fenerbahce's 17-4 response to own a 77-70 lead with under 5 minutes left. Nick Calathes made it even bigger, 84-76, with 2 minutes to play, but the hosts wouldn't score again as Outtara and Diallo inched Monaco closer and John Brown's last-second putback forced OT.

In the extra period, Monaco led briefly but Wilbekin and Hayes-Davis, the latter with a triple and big block, made it 91-87 with 2 minutes left. Diallo and James got the visitors within 96-94 but Guduric was golden at the line to keep the victory in Istanbul

A look back: Baskonia vs. Barca

Tonight’s game between Cazoo Baskonia Vitoria-Gasteiz and FC Barcelona will mark the 25th meeting between them in the Turkish Airlines EuroLeague and they have evenly split their previous clashes. Some of those games have featured all-time greats of European basketball. Let’s take a look back at the history of their showdowns.

In the first decade of the century, the teams rarely met since teams from the same country were by design drawn into different regular season groups. Their first game was the third-place game at [the 2006 Final Four in Prague](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/euroleague/game-center/2005-06/winterthur-fc-barcelona-tau-ceramica-vitoria-gasteiz/E2005/230/), which Baskonia took 82-87 behind 19 points from Predrag Drobnjak. Juan Carlos Navarro and Gregor Fucka scored 20 points apiece in defeat.

Three years later, they dueled in the best-of-five EuroLeague Playoff series that went the distance. Baskonia won Game 1 on the road and 3 at home to take a 2-1 lead, but Barcelona won the next two, [including a 78-62 Game 5 victory](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/euroleague/game-center/2008-09/regal-fc-barcelona-tau-ceramica/E2008/184/) in which Ersan Ilyasova and Navarro each scored 19 and Ilyasova added 10 rebounds to advance to the Final Four. Ilyasova starred for Barcelona with three double-doubles in the series. Igor Rakocevic led Baskonia with 16.4 points per game in the series.

The next six EuroLeague games between them were all in the Top 16s of 2013, 2014 and 2016. Barcelona swept the games in the first of those years and Baskonia did the same in the last. In 2014, they split road wins.

Since 2016 and the introduction of the round-robin format, the teams have met on the regular in the regular season. Baskonia edged Barca 65-62 in their first regular-season game in December 2016. It was part of a seven-game winning streak for Baskonia over Barcelona that lasted from April 2014 through March 2018.

Among their famous showdowns was the 2014 Top 16 finale in which [Andres Nocioni scored 37 points](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/euroleague/game-center/2013-14/fc-barcelona-laboral-kutxa-vitoria/E2013/227/) to lead Baskonia to an 86-97 triumph in Barcelona. That game marked the highest-scoring game between the teams and Nocioni’s output was also the most in this rivalry.

The most points Barcelona ever scored against Baskonia came in its 96-84 victory in Round 10 of this season.

[Nocioni’s PIR of 35](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/euroleague/game-center/2013-14/fc-barcelona-laboral-kutxa-vitoria/E2013/227/) is one of three such efforts by a Baskonia player against Barcelona. [Maciej Lampe](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/euroleague/game-center/2012-13/laboral-kutxa-vitoria-fc-barcelona-regal/E2012/157/) had 21 points and 11 boards for a PIR of 35 in a 79-90 loss in January 2013 and [Steven Enoch](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/euroleague/game-center/2021-22/fc-barcelona-baskonia-vitoria-gasteiz/E2021/77/) matched the 35 after posting 22 points and 8 boards in a 93-67 loss in November 2021.

In that game, Nikola Mirotic authored [the top performance ever by a Barcelona player against Baskonia](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/euroleague/game-center/2021-22/fc-barcelona-baskonia-vitoria-gasteiz/E2021/77/) with 25 points on near-perfect shooting for a PIR of 37. That was also the most lopsided result ever between the teams.

In an all-Spanish affair, Barça hope to restore their championship-credentials after back-to-back losses, while Baskonia try to address issues themselves after three successive defeats.

Mirotic became [the second Barcelona player to net 25 against Baskonia](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/euroleague/game-center/2021-22/fc-barcelona-baskonia-vitoria-gasteiz/E2021/77/), following Navarro [who did so in the aforementioned Top 16 finale](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/euroleague/game-center/2013-14/fc-barcelona-laboral-kutxa-vitoria/E2013/227/) in which Nocioni partied.

The closest game between them was Barcelona’s [71-72](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/euroleague/news/barcelona-rallies-past-baskonia/) win in October 2020. Barcelona held Baskonia scoreless over the final 4 minutes during which it reeled off 11 unanswered points to win by the narrowest of margins.

One way or another, the latest chapter in the rivalry between these teams will be written tonight. Will it be a chapter that matches the above feats? We’ll know soon enough!

Donta Hall (ankle) sat out a domestic game but is ready for Round 20.

AS signed forward Chima Moneke but he has not yet been registered to play.

Markus Howard (back) missed Round 19 and is questionable for Round 20.

Pierria Henry (calf) missed a domestic game and is questionable for Round 20.

Steven Enoch missed a domestic game but is available for Round 20.

**Crvena Zvezda Meridianbet Belgrade**

Ben Bentil missed the double-round week with flu but is expected to play in Round 20.

Nikola Ivanovic, out since Round 10 with a rib injury, will return in Round 20

Hassan Martin has been sidelined with a knee injury since Round 13.

Zvezda signed Facu Campazzo, but he has not been registered in the EuroLeague yet.

**EA7 Emporio Armani Milan**

Luigi Datome, out since Round 6, returned to action in domestic play over the weekend.

Tommaso Baldasso is due out until March with a broken hand.

**FC Barcelona**

[Sergi Martinez](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/euroleague/news/barcas-martinez-to-undergo-knee-surgery/) is out due to a knee injury that required surgery.

Tomas Satoransky, out since Round 17 with right ankle tendonitis, traveled with the team for Round 20.

**FC Bayern Munich**

Bayern signed [D.J. Seeley ](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/euroleague/news/d-j-seeley-returns-to-bayern/)but he has yet to be registered to play.

[Andreas Obst](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/euroleague/news/bayerns-obst-sidelined-by-elbow-injury/?pageTitle=FC%20Bayern%20Munich&historyUrl=/euroleague/teams/fc-bayern-munich/mun/) will miss several weeks due to an elbow injury suffered ahead of Round 15.

Vladimir Lucic remains sidelined with an elbow injury for Round 18.

Zan Sisko has not played since Round 1 and is out indefinitely.

**Fenerbahce Beko Istanbul**

[Tonye Jekiri](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/euroleague/news/fenerbache-jekiri-to-have-surgery-bjelica-to-begin-practicing/) has undergone a groin surgery and is not set to return until March.

Nemanja Bjelica (calf) remains sidelined. He has not played this season.

[Tarik Biberovic](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/euroleague/news/fenerbahces-biberovic-out-six-weeks/) is out with a hamstring injury until at least early February.

[Ismet Akpinar](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/euroleague/news/fenerbahces-akpinar-out-with-sprained-ankle/) is sidelined with a sprained ankle until late January.

**LDLC ASVEL Villeurbanne**

ASVEL signed and registered point guard [Dee Bost](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/euroleague/news/asvel-signs-dee-bost-at-guard/) before Round 20.

ASVEL released guard Parker Jackson-Cartwright on Tuesday.

ASVEL released swingman Anthony Polite after the last EuroLeague game.

**Maccabi Playtika Tel Aviv**

**Real Madrid**

Sergio Rodriguez (knee), Alberto Abalde (ankle), and Nigel Williams-Goss (illness) have not taken the trip to Greece to play in Round 20.

Gabriel Deck did not play the double-round week with a leg injury, but he has traveled with the team to Piraeus.

Carlos Alocen (knee) is out indefinitely.

Anthony Randolph (knee) has not played this season and is out indefinitely.

**Valencia Basket**

The battle to win the grand prize in EuroLeague Fantasy Challenge powered by Ardu Prime is just as tight at the Turkish Airlines EuroLeague standings.

Going into Round 20, Ilias Tef leads the standings with 3,275.7 fantasy points. Three other teams have broken the 3,250-point barrier, and a total of 12 squads have over 3,200 points. There are 370 teams with at least 3,000. Remember, the overall winner of EuroLeague Fantasy Challenge powered by Ardu Prime gets a package for two to attend the 2024 Final Four in Berlin (flights, four hotel nights and VIP tickets), three EuroLeague jerseys of his choice, two EuroLeague official Spalding basketball and a EuroLeague TV Subscription for the 2023-24 season to follow the road to the Final Four that he or she will attend.

My team, Gancedato, doesn't compete for prizes, which are prohibited to Euroleague Basketball employees, but I'm not really challenging for any high spots, anyway. In Round 19, most of my starters delivered and each of my bench players had a PIR of 7 or higher. My head coach Ettore Messina of EA7 Emporio Armani Milan lost his game, however, and that left me at 153.2 points. I rank 3,108th overall with 2,763.55 points. My goal is to make it into the top 3,000 this week and keep climbing until the end of the season. This is Round 20 our of 41 – remember, all the way through the Final Four – so there is plenty of time to rank much higher.

Three trades are allowed before each round, and you can trade your head coach, too. I am letting Coach Messina go and signing Maccabi Playtika Tel Aviv boss Oded Kattash instead. His team plays at home and has been doing better, in general terms, recently. I am trading Dzanan Musa of Real Madrid, thanking him for a solid performance, because I expect Los Blancos' game against Olympiacos Piraeus to be a tough, physical one. That's why I am also selling Nigel Williams-Goss even when he plays against his former team. Finally, I am selling Nemanja Nedovic of Crvena Zvezda Meridianbet Belgrade because his PIR is not matching his over-the-top scoring skills.

My main bet in Round 20 is [Vasilije Micic](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/euroleague/players/vasilije-micic/002580/) of Anadolu Efes Istanbul. I think he will play very well at home against one of his former teams, FC Bayern Munich, where he didn't play particularly well. I am also buying [Ognjen Dobric](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/euroleague/players/ognjen-dobric/004007/) of Zvezda based on our [fantasy tips for this week](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/euroleague/news/fantasy-tips-for-round-20-these-guys-are-in-form/). Dobric is playing solid as he ever has recently. Finally, I am getting [Uros Trifunovic](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/euroleague/players/uros-trifunovic/007673/) of Partizan Mozzart Bet Belgrade, who had a PIR of 18 in his last EuroLeague game and seems to be the best bet with the few credits I have left, just 4.9.

As you can see, my team features five players taking the court on Thursday, with Mathias Lessort of Partizan as team captain, and five more on Friday, three of them potential starters. I have three Partizan and two Zvezda players, so I will be hoping to see high-scoring games in Valencia and Kaunas this week! And if not, well, I rely on other players to make the difference, and I expect a big night from Micic. I always go for the player who I think will be Round 20 MVP, which is hard to get right, but that's my mindset on the first trade. We will see.
