FC Bayern Munich announced on Wednesday afternoon that small forward[ D.J. Seeley](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/euroleague/players/dennis-seeley/004862/) will return to the club until the end of the season, in order to help with the injury plague the team is currently facing. Seeley (1.93 meters, 33 years old) arrives from Gravelines of the French League, where he averaged 12.8 points, 2.1 rebounds and 2.6 assists in 13 games as a starter. Seeley already played for Bayern in the Turkish Airlines EuroLeague during the 2020-21 season and in 2016-17 he made his debut in the competition with Maccabi Tel Aviv. He has played a total 24 EuroLeague games for a total 408 points, 80 rebounds and 126 assists.

Seeley also has extensive 7DAYS EuroCup experience. He has played a total 38 games there divided in six seasons with Radnicki of Serbia, Besiktas of Turkey, Gran Canaria of Spain, Rytas of Lithuania and Buducnost of Montenegro. In 2021-22, with Buducnost, he played a total 18 games averaging 12.8 points, 2.2 rebounds and 2.2 assists. He won the 2021 German Cup title with Bayern.

A couple of rounds past the halfway mark of the Turkish Airlines EuroLeague Regular Season, the league is proving as dramatic as ever, registering historical records in arena attendance as well as in competition balance.

### · Tighter standings, closer games: just four wins separate last place from playoff positions.

A couple of rounds past the halfway mark of the Turkish Airlines EuroLeague Regular Season, the league is proving as dramatic as ever, registering historical records in arena attendance as well as in competition balance.

In the arenas, 8,810 people on average are witnessing one of the most exciting seasons on record. This is the highest attendance figure in the league's history, surpassing the incomplete 2019-20 season's figure of 8,739. The highest numbers for any complete season to date was that of 2017-18, with 8,413 spectators per game.

Full arenas have been a constant this season, with the venues setting a record fill rate of 76.07%. That's not just above the 74.96% fill rate experienced during the incomplete 2019-20 season but significantly higher compared to the 2018-19 (68.04%) and the 2017-18 (65.78%) seasons.

Interest levels in the league continue to rise in a season that is arguably the most balanced ever, honoring the league's claim that "Every Game Matters".

After 171 games played over 19 Rounds, we can see the most balanced standings, the most games decided by less than 3, 5 or 10 points, and the shortest difference between home and away victories since the current 18-team round-robin format was adopted.

Four teams (AS Monaco, FC Barcelona, Fenerbahce Beko Istanbul and Olympiacos Piraeus) remain tied in the second position of the standings, just one win behind Real Madrid, the current leader with 13 victories. The fight for the playoffs is more alive than ever, with the last team in the standings being just four wins away from the eighth and last playoffs place. The percentage of victories by the season leader as compared to the rest of participating teams also shows a clear trend this season of closer proximity and thus more competitiveness among all teams.

The standings clearly reflect how home and away victories are more balanced than ever, with the exception of the 2020-21 season, when the global pandemic didn't allow for in-arena attendance. This season, road teams are enjoying a 6.50% increase in victories as compared to last season.

On top of that, the games are proving to be closer than ever with across-the-board increases in the number of games decided by 3, 5 and 10 points or less. More than one in five games (22.80%) have come down to a single basket or less while almost two in five (39.20%) have been decided just by two possessions.

Total points scored are also showing a positive trend with 2.98 more points scored per game compared to last season.

The 17-year professional career of long-time Turkish Airlines EuroLeague player [Mantas Kalnietis](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/euroleague/players/mantas-kalnietis/jbx/) will come to a close at the end of this month, Zalgiris Kaunas, the team he grew up with and plays for now, announced on Wednesday.

Kalnietis, 36 years old, will hang up his basketball shoes following a Lithuanian League game on Sunday, January 29. Due in part to injuries, he has appeared in just two EuroLeague games for Zalgiris this season, in Round 5 and Round 12.

"This is a special event for me, I want to announce to everyone that I am finishing my basketball career. I still have a week left before I play my farewell game, but this phase of my life, which has lasted since November 1993, is over. I will look for new goals in life," Kalnietis told Zalgiris TV. "I have no doubt that there will be no shortage of emotions on the last day." 

A classic tall guard who could score, pass, drive and run a team, Kalnietis will have played a total of 10 seasons with Zalgiris, beginning and ending his career in the EuroLeague with his hometown club. He also spent five seasons with Lokomotiv Kuban Krasnodar, with whom he won the 7DAYS EuroCup title for the 2012-13 season.

Kalnietis hit the ground running in the EuroLeague as a 19-year-old who debuted in the Top 16 back in 2006 and scored 15 points in just his third game in Europe's top competition. He became a mainstay at Zalgiris before his move to Lokomotiv in 2012. He would return to Zalgiris for the 2015-16 season and play the next two for EA7 Emporio Armani Milan before going the way he came, back through Lokomotiv for two seasons on his way home to Zalgiris in 2021.

Over a total of 194 career EuroLeague games, more than half of them as a starter, Kalnietis averaged 6.7 points, 3.0 assists and 2.1 rebounds. In the EuroCup, where he also spent one season with LDLC ASVEL Villeurbanne, his numbers over six seasons and 69 games were 9.4 points, 5.0 assists and 2.5 rebounds on average. He was named to the All-EuroCup Second Team for the 2020-21 season. Kalnietis also was champion at the original Euroleague Basketball Adidas Next Generation Tournament in 2003 with Zalgiris.

As a life-long member of the club, Kalnietis will not only remain connected to the basketball team, likely sitting on the bench and traveling with it as a team follower, but he will also become the president of Kauno Zalgiris football club, of which he is part owner. from February 1.

Zalgiris icon Mantas Kalnietis to retire this month

Valencia Basket has added to its options at point guard by bringing in Shannon Evans on a multi-year deal that covers the rest of this season and all of the next one, the club announced on Wednesday. Evans (1.85 meters, 28 years old) joins from Real Betis, where he averaged 21.0 points, 2.1 rebounds, 5.4 assists and 1.7 steals in 14 Spanish League games this season. He will appear in the Turkish Airlines EuroLeague for the first time in his career when he makes his Valencia debut.

Evans has put himself on the map after his performances with Betis in the last season and a half. In the 2021-22 campaign he averaged 17.4 points, 3.0 rebounds, 6.8 assists and 1.6 steals in 34 Spanish League games, and he followed in that up in 2022-23 by increasing his scoring average to the aforementioned 21.0 points per game. Prior to joining Betis in 2021, Evans spent the first two years of his career – in 2018-19 and 2019-20 – with Atomeromu of Hungary, before playing for Pau-Orthez of France and Bahcesehir of Turkey in 2020-21. Now, he joins a Valencia team in need of guard help, given the [injuries ](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/euroleague/news/despite-injuries-valencia-is-on-the-rise/)to Martin Hermannsson and Sam Van Rossom.

Maccabi continues to make great use of home-court advantage 

[Maccabi Playtika Tel Aviv](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/euroleague/teams/maccabi-playtika-tel-aviv/roster/tel/?season=2022-23) heads into [its Round 20 clash against ALBA Berlin](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/euroleague/game-center/2022-23/maccabi-playtika-tel-aviv-alba-berlin/E2022/173/) as the clear favorite. And the reasons why are quite clear. No team has a better record at home this season than Maccabi's 8-1, while no team has fared worse on the road than Maccabi (2-8).

Maccabi's home-court record comes during a season in which home teams are winning less. With home teams victorious in 102 of 171 games played so far, the 59.6% winning percentage is the fourth-lowest in competition history. The lowest came in the 2020-21 season (53.8%) in the shadow of the COVID-19 pandemic when the majority of the games were played without fans. Last season home teams won at a 66.1% clip and the all-time average is 62.4%.

Historically, the home-court advantage in Tel Aviv has been meaningful with Maccabi having won 72.6% of its home games, currently the seventh-best all-time among teams with at least 100 home games. And a victory this week would see it leapfrog Panathinaikos Athens into sixth on that distinguished list.

Last season Maccabi went 13-4 at home. During the pandemic-shortened 2019-20 campaign, it was 13-1 in Tel Aviv. Those were the team’s best showings at home under the current round-robin format and, not surprisingly, Maccabi was ranked highest in the standings in those two seasons; it was tied for fourth when the 2019-20 season was halted and finished fifth last season.

Maccabi’s home record this season is no scheduling fluke; it has defeated four of the teams currently sitting ahead of it in the standings (Olympiacos Piraeus, AS Monaco, Zalgiris Kaunas and Anadolu Efes Istanbul).

In many of the games, the backcourt has shined; starting guards Wade Baldwin and Lorenzo Brown and reserves Darrun Hilliard and John DiBartolomeo have averaged a combined 43.8 points, 10.8 rebounds, 13.6 assists and 5.9 turnovers for a PIR of 46.3 at home compared to 38.2 points, 8.5 rebounds, 11.2 assists, 7.0 turnovers for a PIR of 33.1 in road games.

Players, coaches, management, fans and even sports psychologists have long debated what the home-court advantage actually is. Unlike other professional sports, the surface and dimensions of basketball courts are the same at every EuroLeague arena.

In Tel Aviv, however, the difference is clear to all. It’s the fans.

After last week’s triumph over Partizan Mozzart Bet Belgrade, Bonzie Colson said: "I feed off their energy, we have the best fans in the EuroLeague and it is great to have them behind us every home game."

"We really like playing here and we have this adrenalin from the fans," Roman Sorkin added after beating Valencia Basket.

Nearly every player on the roster can be credited with a quote about the fans because Maccabi has as loyal a fan base as any in the league, and the club sold all of its season tickets already in August!

The passion from the supporters in yellow hasn’t been limited to games in Tel Aviv, either. At every Final Four Maccabi has played over the past two decades, from Moscow to Prague to Madrid to Barcelona to Milan, the Maccabi fans have been loud and visible.

If Kattash’s men can continue to feed off the energy at Menora Mivtachim Arena and then capture a few more road wins, a ticket to the EuroLeague Playoffs could be in the cards. And no team wants to visit Tel Aviv in April.

The Crossover welcomes Sergio Scariolo

### Virtus’ Head Coach reviews his wide career and shares his coaching principles in the third episode of the season

The latest guest on Season 5 of the Crossover with Joe Arlauckas is the head coach of Virtus Segafredo Bologna and the Spanish national team, Sergio Scariolo. Their lengthy chat covered the width and the breadth of Scariolo’s distinguished career. 

Although he studied law, basketball was Scariolo’s passion and already at age 22 he had decided to hang up his sneakers and begin coaching. Before he could settle in as an assistant at his hometown club, Brescia, Scariolo had to fulfill his military commitment. He was fortunate enough to receive a position as coach of the Italian military team, which competed in Italy’s this division, and he later guided that team to the gold medal at the world championships for military teams. 

Scariolo was just 28 when he took the reins of a team for the first time, Scavolini Pesaro. In the mid-1990s, he spent four seasons on the sidelines with Fortitudo Bologna where Scariolo and Arlauckas only now discovered how close the latter was to play for him!

As his name grew, Scariolo spent time studying Spanish and he was ready when he received an offer to coach in the ACB. 

"There was probably no better place to make your first step outside your country than Spain and specifically Vitoria where there was a lot of energy, a lot of enthusiasm, a lot of desire to climb to the next level," Scariolo said. 

After guiding Baskonia to the Spanish league finals and the 1999 Copa del Rey, he moved on to Real Madrid and won the Spanish championship in his first season. The next stop in Spain was a much different team, Unicaja Malaga, which he also led to the league championship as well as a berth at the EuroLeague Final Four. 

He left Unicaja in 2008 and the following season was appointed as Spain’s national team coach for the first time. The skills and approach needed to handle a team loaded with stars such as Real Madrid or the national team in certain eras compared to Unicaja led to a discussion about Scariolo’s coaching philosophy. 

"You’ve got to really be available to play with other teammates, to share the ball, because nowadays the defense will be able to shut a selfish, even if he’s an extremely gifted player, down much easier than before. So first of all you have to feel the will to play together with your teammates, to share the ball. And second, you have to share the will to play defense," Scariolo detailed. "Those two principles are non-negotiable. I could barely coach a player who was not really into this, committed to this. Then all the rest you can have more or less flexibility."

Scariolo’s career would also include stops with Khimki Moscow Region in Russia, Olimpia Milan in Italy and Toronto in the NBA. He was part of the coaching staff that led Toronto to its only NBA crown in 2019. After three seasons with Toronto, Scariolo initially struggled with the decision to return home to Italy as a head coach. 

"I remember that the night before the day I decided was the only sleepless night I’ve had in the last 20 years, even before a game or after a game. I couldn’t close my eyes all night. And then after making the decision, I felt like, ‘hey, it was a no-brainer,’” he said.

Scariolo has continued to make history with Virtus. Last season they won the 7DAYS EuroCup crown and now he has them in the playoff race in the Turkish Airlines EuroLeague. At age 61, Scariolo has plenty left in the tank to build Virtus into a European force once again.

In two games last week, Colson averaged 24.0 points on 12-of-15 two-point shooting and 7-of-11 on three-pointers, 10.5 rebounds and a PIR of 31.0. The man of the moment! 

[Johnathan Motley, Fenerbahce Beko Istanbul](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/euroleague/players/johnathan-motley/011157/) (15.1 credits) – Motley returned to action recently and showed his full potential in Round 19 against FC Bayern Munich with 22 points, a career-high 17 rebounds and a PIR of 38. A great scorer due to his size and athleticism, Fenerbahce needs Motley to step up against a physical squad like Monaco.

EuroLeague Fantasy tips Round 20

[Jonah Radebaugh, Valencia Basket](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/euroleague/players/jonah-radebaugh/011972/) (6.4 credits) – Valencia has had many point guard injuries recently. Even though Chris Jones and Jared Harper returned this weekend, Radebaugh is expected to keep seeing extended playing time. Last week, he averaged 12.5 points, 4.5 assists and a PIR of 15.0. An all-around player with an opportunity. 

[Jaleen Smith, ALBA Berlin](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/euroleague/players/jaleen-smith/011192/) (10.5 credits) – Smith keeps leading ALBA's backcourt, bringing out his best version. In the last four games, Smith has averaged 19.3 points on great shooting (69.2% 2FG, 47.1% 3FG, 91.7% FT), 3.8 fouls drawn and a PIR of 20.3. In his second EuroLeague season, Smith is playing a leading role for run-and-gun ALBA. 

[Ognjen Dobric, Crvena Zvezda Meridianbet Belgrade](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/euroleague/players/ognjen-dobric/004007/) (7.6 credits) – Many players have stepped up for Zvezda since Coach Ivanovic joined the team and Dobric is one of them with double-digit PIRs in each of the last six games. In that span, Dobric has averaged 10.2 points on 70.8% two-point shooting, 4.2 rebounds and a PIR of 13.8.
