Overview

Virtus showed a good collective game to overcome Valencia last week, dishing 23 assists with just 8 turnovers orchestrated by Alessandro Pajola with 6 helpers, and will need a similarly controlled effort to gain a vital road victory. But that won't be easy against an Olympiacos defense marshalled by the outstanding ball-hawking skills of Thomas Walkup, who powered last week's win at Zalgiris, and the Italian team will also have to find an answer to the shooting prowess of Alec Peters. December's meeting between these teams was a close encounter, taken 69-67 by Virtus after a game-winning shot by former Olympiacos player Daniel Hackett, and this pivotal showdown should be another hard-fought battle.

- Prior to this season, Olympiacos has won all six games against Virtus this century, including a 117-71 thrashing in Round 12 last season, when it set a club scoring record.

- When Virtus edged Olympiacos 69-67 in Round 15, it was its first win over Olympiacos since the 1994-95 season.

- Last season in Bologna, Olympiacos edged Virtus 83-85 in Bologna as Shaquielle McKissic set a career-high with a PIR of 30.

- In a rivalry that dates back to 1976, Olympiacos holds a 13-4 all-time lead over Virtus. Olympiacos has won all nine of its home games against Virtus.

- Olympiacos ousted Virtus 2-1 in their 1994 best-of-three EuroLeague quarterfinals series to reach its first-ever Final Four where it lost in the championship game.

- Virtus big man Bryant Dunston played two seasons at Olympiacos, from 2013 to 2015, and in both seasons was chosen the EuroLeague Best Defender. He played under head coach Georgios Bartzokas.

- Dunston tied his career-high in offensive rebounds with 8 playing for Anadolu Efes Istanbul in Game 4 of the 2017 EuroLeague Playoffs, which Olympiacos won in Istanbul 62-74.

- Virtus guard Daniel Hackett spent two seasons with Olympiacos, from 2015 to 2017. He was a teammate then of Olympiacos forward Kostas Papanikolaou.

- Virtus forward Jordan Mickey played under current Olympiacos head coach Georgios Bartzokas at Khimki Moscow Region during the 2018-19 season.

- Olympiacos center Nikola Milutinov has been a teammate of Virtus's Ognjen Dobric on the Serbian national team. Together they won the silver medal at the 2023 Basketball World Cup. Milutinov and Dobric also won the silver medal at the 2013 U19 World Championship.

- Milutinov was a teammate of the Virtus trio of Tornike Shengelia, Daniel Hackett and Iffe Lundberg at CSKA Moscow for two seasons, from 2020 to 2022. Together they helped CSKA reach the 2021 Final Four.

- Milutinov and injured Virtus center Devontae Cacok were teammates at CSKA for the second part of last season.

- Virtus forward Tornike Shengelia earned weekly MVP honors in October 2019 playing for Baskonia Vitoria-Gasteiz at home against Olympiacos. Shengelia collected 25 points and 9 rebounds for a PIR of 28 in an 82-66 win.

- Shengelia tied his career-high with 7 assists playing for Baskonia Vitoria-Gasteiz against Olympiacos in January 2020.

- Olympiacos forward Peters was a teammate of Virtus forward Achille Polonara at Baskonia Vitoria-Gasteiz during the 2020-21 season.

- Olympiacos center Moustapha Fall was a teammate of Virtus's Isaia Cordinier on the French national team at the 2023 Basketball World Cup.

- Virtus center Ante Zizic posted a career-high PIR of 33 playing for Maccabi Playtika Tel Aviv against Olympiacos in January 2022; he earned the only MVP of the Round honor of his career with that effort.
