Facundo Campazzo has hit the ground running since returning to Real Madrid Baloncesto, even earning himself MVP of the Month honors for November 2023.

What do you get when you add a player like [Facundo Campazzo](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/euroleague/players/facundo-campazzo/005928/) to a Real Madrid team that won the Turkish Airlines EuroLeague last season? A match made in heaven. 

Campazzo returned to Los Blancos last summer after three years away, having spent two years in the NBA with the Denver Nuggets and the Dallas Mavericks before joining Crvena Zvezda Meridianbet Belgrade back in the EuroLeague in the second half of last season. But, when the chance arose to come back to WiZink Center, the 32-year-old point guard didn’t think twice.

“I feel at home here,” says Campazzo. “I have my house here, my daughter was born here, I have so many great memories here, so when I had the chance to come back, I didn’t hesitate.”

After having won two EuroLeague titles during his first spell at Real, in the 2014-15 and 2017-18 seasons, Campazzo is clear that his personal goal – and that of the team – is to add another EuroLeague trophy to the club’s haul.

“This season, \[our goal is\] just try to be again at the Final Four, in the last game, in the final,” he adds. “Not the Final Four, the final. And try to fight for another title. That’s the long-term goal for us. The goals never change here.

“When you talk about Real Madrid, you talk about titles. Or fighting for important things.”

### Cheering on Real Madrid from afar

Last season, Campazzo had to watch the EuroLeague Championship Game on TV as he was still playing domestically with Zvezda, but that didn’t stop him from cheering on his former team and his ex-teammates. Notably, one player who shined alongside Campazzo previously is the man who broke the hearts of all Olympiacos Piraeus fans: Sergio Llull.

“When Sergio got the ball, the first thing that came to my mind was, ‘Oh, no, he’s going to do it again. He’s going to do it again,’” explains Campazzo. 

“It was amazing. It was a big-time shot. I think it was one of the best shots in his career. Everybody in the club and the EuroLeague is going to remember that shot.”

Back together with the likes of Llull, Sergio Rodriguez, Rudy Fernandez and Walter Tavares, Campazzo has looked right at home once again, averaging 13.5 points, 2.9 rebounds, a league-best 8.3 assists, 1.2 steals and a 20.2 PIR. 

His play in the month of November was so dominant, too, that he earned himself the MVP of the Month trophy. So, it’s safe to say that Campazzo is right where he needs to be.

Ergin Ataman returns to Anadolu Efes with Panathinaikos B.C.: ‘I had a great time there’

Ergin Ataman and Anadolu Efes Istanbul will forever have their names linked together. During a six-year stint at Efes, the current Panathinaikos Athens boss transformed the club and helped the team win the Turkish Airlines EuroLeague for the first time in its history in the 2020-21 campaign, before then going back-to-back the following season.

On Tuesday evening, Ataman returns to Sinan Erdem Dome for the first time since departing Efes last summer, having embarked upon a new project as he looks to turn around the fortunes of Panathinaikos. Efes has already revealed that there will be a sellout crowd, and the 57-year-old Ataman only has fond memories of his time at his former club.

“It was an extremely great time that I had at Anadolu Efes,” explains Coach Ataman. 

“The first year that I came, I took over Efes in the middle of the season and it was in last position in the EuroLeague \[standings\]. Immediately, the next season, we changed many players, we changed the mentality and from the last spot in the EuroLeague, in just a few months we reached the final of the EuroLeague.

“The history of basketball will write that Efes won the \[EuroLeague\] title back-to-back in 2021 and 2022.”

### A new life at Panathinaikos 

Panathinaikos owner Dimitrios Giannakopoulos watched from afar as Ataman rebuilt the Efes empire, even taking it to never-seen-before heights, and he decided that the Turkish tactician is the right man to oversee a reset at OAKA.

Many changes took place at Panathinaikos over the summer, with a number of big-name arrivals landing in Athens. Yet, perhaps most importantly, the appointment of Ataman has led to a change in mindset at Panathinaikos, just like what happened when he joined Efes.

“Sometimes you will win, sometimes you will lose some games,” comments Ataman. “But all of us have a big \[desire\] to put Panathinaikos at the highest level, like in the past. 

“For sure it will not be easy to reach the title immediately, but Panathinaikos will be one of the teams that will fight with all the other teams for the title of the EuroLeague.”

Panathinaikos is currently fifth in the EuroLeague standings after going 6-5 through the first 11 rounds of the 2023-24 season, while an injury-hit Efes is in 14th place with a 5-6 record.

After winning two EuroLeague titles with the Turkish club, the charismatic coach heads back to Istanbul with the Greens.
