  Rolands Smits, Zalgiris: 'I feel the same as in Latvia'



After a decade in Spain and the last four seasons with FC Barcelona, Latvian forward Rolands Smits decided he wanted something different when he returned to the Baltics to play for Zalgiris Kaunas this season. 

"I feel good because I am closer to Latvia, to my home, it is just three hours away. I feel the same as in Latvia." Smits said. "In Zalgiris, this is next level. The gym is very good. All the facilities is perfect for all players to get better. When I came here, this was something big for me when I saw this all together."

After a decade in Spain and the last four seasons with FC Barcelona, Latvian forward Rolands Smits decided he wanted something different when he returned to the Baltics to play for Zalgiris Kaunas this season.

"I wanted to have a bigger role in the team, I wanted to feel more important," Smits said. "I knew this was a perfect place for me to play."

It's worked out well for Smits and Zalgiris, which is in the mix for one of the final tickets to the playoffs entering Round 34. The big man is averaging career-highs of 10.1 points and 4.8 rebounds per game this season.

"It wasn’t the first year that Rolands was a target from Zalgiris," Coach Kazys Maksvytis revealed. "He's a player that can play multiple positions. At the '4', he’s strong enough to play under the basket. He can stretch the floor as a '5'… He adds to our team versatility and experience."

Aside from an increased role, Smits found comfort quickly in Kaunas for many other reasons.

"I feel good because I am closer to Latvia, to my home, it is just three hours away. I feel the same as in Latvia." Smits said. "In Zalgiris, this is next level. The gym is very good. With his team facing a must-win situation in a down-to-the-wire playoff race, Darius Thompson anchored Cazoo Baskonia Vitoria-Gasteiz's record-setting 120-100 win over LDLC ASVEL Villeurbanne, earning his second MVP of the Round honor of his rookie EuroLeague season.
