Euroleague Basketball Officials Clinic celebrates 32nd edition

Just like the teams and players spread across the continent and beyond are getting ready for a new season, the complete cohort of Euroleague Basketball referees came together to hold their own four-day preparation session for the 2023-24 Turkish Airlines EuroLeague and BKT EuroCup over the weekend.

The 32nd Clinic for Euroleague Basketball Officials was held between Thursday and Sunday in Ljubljana, Slovenia, and saw all 68 referees due to work EuroLeague and EuroCup games starting the first week of October in attendance alongside 12 referee coaches and several special guests.

Their agenda was a busy one and included the first presentation to his former colleagues from Daniel Hierrezuelo, Euroleague Basketball's new Director of Officiating.

"This is the first time since my nomination as Euroleague Basketball Senior Director of Officiating that I have the opportunity to address to all our referees in person the main ideas and concepts that we will introduce during the 2023-24 season," Hierrezuelo said. "We have a strong group of 68 referees who have shared their knowledge, opinions and experience on many different topics during these four days as I firmly believe that teamwork, honesty and mutual respect are some  of the core principles to improve officiating quality”

Among the special guests who also presented to the referees were Zeljko Obradovic, head coach of Partizan Mozzart Bet Belgrade, whose presentation took place on the floor at Stozice Arena; Ioannis Sfairopoulos, Euroleague Head Coaches Board Vice-President; Costas Rigas, former Euroleague Basketball Senior Director; Mar Rovira, Sports Psychologist; Gianluca Mazzoncini, Physical Trainer; and Goran Sasic, Euroleague Head Coaches Board Executive Director.

The various subjects addressed over more than 12 hours daily of the clinic included an analysis of instant replay use; a discussion of the parameters of marginal contact; a video session to study act-of-shooting and verticality calls; officiating standards, rules tests and more. There was also an emphasis put on communication while working in cross-cultural environments.

All that was in addition to the copious physical testing, reviews of officiating statistics and protocols, as well as open discussion sessions and group work among the referees themselves.

The four days of intense preparations served to assure that the 68 referees, all of whom worked in the competitions last season, will hit the ground running when the EuroLeague and EuroCup get rolling next month.

⦁	The integrity standards of all Euroleague Basketball referees are based on strong adherence to moral and ethical principles and values such as honesty, honor, dependability, and trustworthiness.

⦁	Euroleague Basketball follows a very strict monitoring protocol to guarantee that all games are disputed under an unquestionable Fair Play environment, practicing a zero-tolerance policy for bribery and corruption.

⦁	Euroleague Basketball will open an internal investigation to clarify the content of the statements made by the Ukrainian referee Mykola Ambrosov. 

⦁	Once the internal investigation is finished, Euroleague Basketball will publicly disclose its outcome, and if any evidence is found will apply all necessary measures or sanctions against any individual who may have been involved.

- Approved the 2023-24 competitions bylaws.
- Approved the proposed lists of 2023-24 Turkish Airlines EuroLeague and EuroCup participating teams, as well as the extension of the suspension from Russian Federation teams from Euroleague Basketball competitions for the 2023-24 season.

Additionally, ECA Shareholders received a report from the recently appointed Senior Director of Officiating, Daniel Hierrezuelo, on the core principles to be applied and the mid-term goals to improve officiating quality within Euroleague Basketball competitions.

The Assembly of Syndicated Shareholders of Euroleague Commercial Assets met on Thursday, June 29 to review the 2022-23 Turkish Airlines EuroLeague and 7DAYS EuroCup seasons, to confirm the provisional lists of teams that will participate in the 2023-24 season, and to approve the bylaws for the 2023-24 season, the 2022-23 financial report, and the 2023-24 clubs' economic distribution.

The EuroLeague format will have one major change designed to increase the excitement of the playoff race. [The Play-In Showdown](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/euroleague/news/euroleague-introduces-play-in-showdown) will require teams who finish from the seventh through 10th places at the end of the regular season to play their way into the playoffs.

The seventh- and eighth-place teams will face off in a single game whose winner will advance to the quarterfinals. Meanwhile, the ninth- and 10th-place teams will meet in a do-or-die showdown that sends the losing side home and the winner to a second game vs. the loser of the 7-8 game for the final ticket to the playoffs. The team with the better regular-season record will be the home team in each game.

The Assembly members also agreed to maintain the suspension of the Russian Federation teams during the 2023-24 competitions.

Starting next season, [only six teams from each regular season group will advance to the EuroCup Playoffs, instead of eight](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/eurocup/news/new-eurocup-format-certain-to-bring-increased-drama). Additionally, the top two teams in each regular season group will advance directly to the quarterfinals. The eighthfinals pairings will feature the teams ranked third against the teams ranked sixth in the corresponding groups, as well as the teams ranked fourth against the corresponding fifth-place teams.

While the eighthfinals and quarterfinals will remain single-elimination games, the EuroCup Semifinals and Finals will be played in a best-of-three format.

### OTHERS

The Assembly members were also informed about the appointment of a new Officiating Director, Daniel Hierrezuelo, who has been a Euroleague Basketball referee for 20 seasons. Hierrezuelo, who replaces Richard Stokes, ranks seventh in total games officiated in Euroleague Basketball competitions since 2000. He has called a total of 448 games, 340 in the EuroLeague and 208 in the EuroCup. In the EuroLeague, he has called 22 playoff games, five Final Fours and two championship games.

The shareholders would like to thank Richard Stokes for his dedication over the last eight8 years and wish him well in his future endeavors.

The decisions made at the Assembly of Syndicate Shareholders of ECA will be brought to the ECA Shareholders Meeting, to be held on July 4, 2023.

Euroleague Basketball announced on June 15 that Dejan Bodiroga will remain as Euroleague Basketball President while Paulius Motiejunas will be the new acting Chief Executive Officer for the 2023-24 season.

Euroleague Basketball announced on June 15 that Dejan Bodiroga will remain as Euroleague Basketball President while Paulius Motiejunas will be the new acting Chief Executive Officer for the 2023-24 season.

Dejan Bodiroga, who was appointed Euroleague Basketball President on September 14, 2022, will continue to focus on increasing the quality of the competition for clubs, players, fans, partners and all EB stakeholder while playing a key role in strengthening relationships with the wider basketball community, including the EuroLeague Players Association, the EuroLeague Head Coaches Board, the Union of Euroleague Basketball Officials, FIBA, domestic leagues and other basketball-related institutions.

Motiejunas, 42, was unanimously appointed by Euroleague Basketball shareholders and will replace Marshall Glickman, who was acting CEO during the 2022-23 season.

Motiejunas has extensive experience within the Euroleague Basketball ecosystem, having spent most of his career to date in various capacities with Euroleague Basketball shareholder Zalgiris Kaunas. He started with Zalgiris in 2007 as the director of communications, later became general manager, and has been the club president and owner since 2013. He is also the director of Zalgirio Arena.

Under Motiejunas's management, Zalgiris has experienced some of its most successful moments on the court by qualifying multiple times to the EuroLeague Playoffs and reaching the Final Four for the first time this century in 2018. Zalgiris has thrived by developing some of Lithuania's top young prospects and combining them with a mix of the country's best and most experienced players and foreign talents looking to take their careers to the next level.

Off the court, too, Motiejunas brought the club to a new level, positioning Zalgiris among the EuroLeague leaders in ticket sales and revenue growth while boasting a legendary game-day experience at one of the finest arenas on the continent.

Paulius was recognized by his peers with the EuroLeague Executive of the Year award over two consecutive seasons, 2017-18 and 2018-19.

TV3 Group and Lithuanian National Radio and Television (LRT), in partnership with Saran Media Group, are pleased to announce the extension of their free-to-air and PayTV broadcasting rights for Turkish Airlines EuroLeague and 7Days EuroCup games in the Baltics.

Under the new agreement, TV3 Group and LRT will co-broadcast all Zalgiris Kaunas games across Lithuania, as well as all EuroCup games featuring Lithuanian clubs . Euroleague Basketball Acting CEO Marshall Glickman has announced he will step down from his role as CEO following the expiration of his contract on July 31, 2023.

 

The Euroleague Commercial Assets’ Board of Directors will reconvene in the next two weeks to discuss his potential future role in an advisory capacity and the next steps to retain a new CEO for the organization.

EuroLeague social media reaches new heights with record numbers

Interest in the the Turkish Airlines EuroLeague reached record highs this season, with fans – new and old – actively engaging with the league's social media content, resulting in historic numbers. During the 2022-23 season, the EuroLeague's social media team ensured that fans from all corners of the globe got even closer to the action by providing behind-the-scenes access on gamedays, in addition to tailoring the users' experience based on the platform the content was being viewed on.

Looking at the season as a whole, there were double-digit increases across the board, while the total number of accumulated impressions on social media topped the one billion mark – yes, billion! – following a 55% increase on last year's numbers. In terms of engagement, this figure rose by 71% to 40 million. The biggest jump came with video views, as this number shot up by 130% to 393 million. There was a 17% increase in followers as 3.4 million more people decided that they wanted the EuroLeague's posts to appear in their feed.

For the majority of EuroLeague fans, [Instagram](https://www.instagram.com/euroleague/) was the favored social network of choice and there was a 50% jump in impressions compared to last year's output as 549 million people saw the EuroLeague's posts. There were 31 million engagements with the publications, too, a 68% increase on the 2021-22 numbers. When it came to video views, this total skyrocketed by 213% to 233 million.

The platform that had the second-highest number of interactions with the EuroLeague account was [Twitter](https://twitter.com/Euroleague), as the league's posts were seen by 231 million people, an increase of 67%. Some two million engagements took place; this rose by 119% on last year's totals. Video views were once again popular, climbing by 57% to 32 million based on the 2021-22 figures.

EuroLeague posts on [Facebook](https://www.facebook.com/TheEuroLeague/) had a reach of 173 million people, an increase of 46%, which matched the engagement on [Twitter](https://twitter.com/Euroleague). The 2 million likes or shares on [Facebook](https://www.facebook.com/TheEuroLeague/) represented a rise of 88%. [TikTok](https://www.tiktok.com/@euroleague) has become the go-to social media platform for many people from Generation Z, and there was plenty of growth for the EuroLeague's account here, too. There were a total of 69 million impressions, up 166% from last year's figures, while the number of followers rose by 378,000, which is a 92% increase.
