We are working on our defense, but more than defense, also offense is very important. We lost against Monaco, not because of our defensive mistakes but because of our offensive turnovers that we made, especially in the fourth quarter. We need to be smarter and have more game discipline in each period of the game.

Euroleague Basketball is excited to announce the launch of a new monthly video series titled "Inside the Whistle". This innovative series will provide fans with an inside look at some key calls in both the Turkish Airlines EuroLeague and BKT EuroCup, as referees break down and explain specific plays in certain games.

With the aim of educating fans on the rules of basketball and enhancing transparency in officiating, "Inside the Whistle" will feature detailed explanations of plays from both the EuroLeague and EuroCup. The first episode of "Inside the Whistle" includes three clips from EuroLeague games and one from the EuroCup, with explanations given for the decisions taken on the floor. Future episodes of "Inside the Whistle" will dive into some of the key rule types that are often discussed among fans, such as goaltending, unsportsmanlike fouls, and fouls in the act of shooting.

The series will be released on a monthly basis, with each episode providing in-depth justifications on why these calls were made, with active and former referees offering a unique perspective on why a decision was made and the mechanics behind it.

The first week of December features another double round in the Turkish Airlines EuroLeague and that means EuroLeague Fantasy Challenge managers have a double the chance to improve their teams in private leagues and the overall standings. 

I went for players who have been in really good form recently, ranging from 13.1 credits to 4.5. Something for everyone! Here are my recommendations for the double-round week. 

Donta Hall, Isaia Cordinier, Rokas Jokubaitis, Malte Delow and Alpha Diallo are featured in this week's article.

EuroCup Fantasy tips: Rounds 13-14

### Malte Delow, ALBA Berlin (4.5 credits) 

ALBA is bringing back some players. The latest is Matt Thomas, who played in the German League this weekend. [Malte Delow](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/en/euroleague/players/malte-delow/008211/) returned three weeks ago and has been doing really well. In his sixth season in the competition, Delow is averaging 8.0 points, 4.0 rebounds and a PIR of 11.0. It is getting harder to find good, cheap players in the game, but Delow is definitely one of them. 

### Alpha Diallo, AS Monaco (13.1 credits) 

Monaco appointed Vassilis Spanoulis as head coach and immediately registered an 88-91 road win over defending champion Panathinaikos. Some players rose to the occasion: Mike James had 10 assists and just 1 turnover. [Alpha Diallo](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/en/euroleague/players/alpha-diallo/011226/) was just sensational: 24 points, 7 rebounds, 3 steals, 7 fouls drawn and a PIR of 35. Can Diallo keep doing that well? I believe he can, being a natural mismatch. 

### Rokas Jokubaitis, Maccabi Playtika Tel Aviv (10.5 credits)

Maccabi broke a five-game losing streak with a big road victory over ALBA Berlin. [Rokas Jokubaitis](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/euroleague/players/rokas-jokubaitis/007519/) confirmed his role as the team's go-to guy with 24 points on 11-of-13 two-pointers, 6 assists, 1 turnover and a PIR of 29. He has had 50 assists and just 8 turnovers so far this season. His amazing effectiveness and affordable price make him one of the biggest fantasy bargains right now.

### Donta Hall, Baskonia Vitoria-Gasteiz (12.4 credits)  

Baskonia returned to winning ways last week, downing Zalgiris 70-83 on the road. [Donta Hall](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/en/euroleague/players/donta-hall/011196/) had an outstanding game, leading Baskonia with 14 points, 11 rebounds, 3 blocks and a game-high PIR of 25. He has had two double-doubles in the last three games, averaging 11.7 points on 13-of-20 two-pointers, 8.7 rebounds and 1.3 blocks. Good centers are always hard to find in fantasy, so I'd recommend going for Hall. 

### Isaia Cordinier, Virtus Segafredo Bologna (12.5 credits) 

A high-scoring game is expected between Virtus and ALBA, which looks like a perfect fit for [Isaia Cordinier](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/euroleague/players/isaia-cordinier/009549/)'s athleticism and ability to play in transition. He has been playing really well, too, getting a PIR of 15 or better in four of his last five games. In Round 12, Cordinier had 16 points, 7 rebounds, 8 assists and a PIR of 28. Everything seems ready for him to click in this double round.

There has been no stopping Paris Basketball of late, and a big reason for that has been the play of TJ Shorts, who has been selected as Euroleague Basketball’s MVP of the Month for November.

There has been no stopping [Paris Basketball](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/en/euroleague/teams/paris-basketball/prs/) of late, and a big reason for that has been the play of [TJ Shorts](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/en/euroleague/players/tj-shorts/012608/), who has been selected as Euroleague Basketball’s MVP of the Month for November.

Paris is in the midst of an eight-game winning streak, with five of those being included in the period for the November MVP award, which has seen Shorts’s team improve to a 9-3 record and go joint top of the Turkish Airlines EuroLeague standings.

Over the last five games, Shorts has shown that he can score and assist at an elite level in the EuroLeague, averaging 19.6 points per game over that stretch and a league-best 8.4 assists per game. What’s more, he has averaged a 25.2 PIR, comfortably the highest of any player in the November MVP race, and his plus/minus is the joint highest of any player this month, level with Paris teammate Mikael Jantunen.

Against Partizan, Shorts hit a pair of clutch free throws with 22 seconds left to help Paris regain the lead, with the Parisian outfit remaining in front the rest of the way. When Zalgiris came to town, Shorts netted 21 points – the third time he had gone above 20 points this season – before following that up with a 24-point, 9-assist performance at Barcelona, which was unbeaten at home until that point. His 3 steals in that win at Barcelona tied his career high, which he set in Round 1.

He didn’t stop there. At Efes, Shorts recorded his second EuroLeague double-double by pairing 21 points with 10 assists, before posting 19 points and 9 assists – including a dagger two-pointer – in a win over Virtus in Paris. After shooting 2 for 15 on three-pointers through the first seven rounds of the EuroLeague season, Shorts – who didn’t attempt a three-point shot in Round 8 – is 6 for 7 from deep over the last four games.

The MVP of the Month is named by Euroleague Basketball based on his and his team's performances. The award for November covered the five games played by all teams between Thursday, November 7, and Friday, November 29.

This marks the first time that Shorts has earned monthly MVP honors in what is his rookie season in the competition, and this is the first time a Paris player has secured the award.

The first third of the Turkish Airlines EuroLeague season is in the books. While there are no shortage of rapidly developing storylines across the league, some things in the EuroLeague do not change quite so quickly.

The table above lists this season’s most efficient scorers in points per possession among the 34 players using over 12 possessions per game. While there are several newcomers included here, the presence of [Sasha Vezenkov](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/en/euroleague/players/sasha-vezenkov/003469/) and [Nikola Mirotic](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/en/euroleague/players/nikola-mirotic/000796/) continues perhaps the most predictable trend in the EuroLeague. 

After a season away from Olympiacos, Vezenkov has picked up where he left off, actually improving on the top-ranked 1.22 points per possession he scored during his MVP season. Shooting 57% in the post, finishing 74% of his other shots at the rim, and knocking down 39% of his catch and shoot jumpers, his inside-outside scoring prowess has been the cornerstone of his team’s early success.

Mirotic has led the EuroLeague in scoring efficiency in three of the last five years while still placing in the top-five in the two seasons he didn’t finish on top. This season has been a good example of why. Even as Mirotic has had an off year by his standards scoring in the post, he’s made 43% of his spot up three-point attempts and 85% of his free throws to compensate as he remains one of the league’s toughest defensive assignments with his ability to beat defenders on and off the ball. He showed his whole arsenal in Round 20 scoring 29 on the road against the league’s most efficient defense coming into that game.

[Devin Booker](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/euroleague/players/devin-booker/007056/) is the most notable newcomer on this list relative to previous seasons. In this, the 33-year-old’s seventh EuroLeague campaign, he has had a breakout year of sorts. While Booker has had some efficient years at previous stops, he’s never scored this consistently in this big of a role. Leading all players in scoring as the screener in pick and rolls, he’s kept defenses honest popping to the perimeter while shooting a staggering 83% around the rim as well, finding great chemistry with FC Bayern Munich’s potent backcourt.

Perhaps the most surprising name here is [Facundo Campazzo](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/en/euroleague/players/facundo-campazzo/005928/), who has sat towards the top of numerous passing related leaderboards since debuting in the EuroLeague with Real Madrid during the 2017-18 season but never found as much success looking for his own shot as he is this season. Though he is still in a battle with [TJ Shorts](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/en/euroleague/players/tj-shorts/012608/) to be the league’s assists leader, he’s done so while looking to keep the ball more often in transition and emerging as more of a threat when sliding off the ball as well.

To round out the surprises, [Theo Maledon](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/en/euroleague/players/theo-maledon/007027/) has been a major bright spot for LDLC ASVEL Villeurbanne and a much improved young talent than the one EuroLeague fans last saw. The 23-year-old guard has looked like a different player offensively than he did in his last EuroLeague season, also with ASVEL, in 2019-20, creating steadily out of ball screens, shooting the ball with confidence from beyond the arc, and delivering in several high-pressure road games already. 

[Nigel Hayes-Davis](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/euroleague/players/nigel-hayes-davis/008962/) is a more established, battle-tested veteran but is nonetheless off to the best shooting start of his career, elevating his game early on. [Jabari Parker](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/euroleague/players/jabari-parker/012745/) falls into that boat as well while his FC Barcelona teammate, [Kevin Punter](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/euroleague/players/kevin-punter/009862/), remains arguably the league’s most dangerous midrange scorer and a nightmare matchup when he gets hot but has found his way onto this list by virtue of striking more of a balance with the way he gets to his spots.

Consistency will be key for this group moving forward as they’ll look to lift their respective teams in what is shaping up to be an extremely crowded postseason picture.

Fluidity, fire and finishing: no surprises from Spanoulis’s Monaco

One solitary game might be too early for meaningful judgments about [Vassilis Spanoulis](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/en/euroleague/teams/as-monaco/mco/spanoulis-vassilis/?season=E2024)’s coaching trajectory, but [Friday’s 88-91 debut victory](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/en/euroleague/news/spanoulis-takes-debut-win-as-monaco-downs-panathinaikos-88-91/) for the new [AS Monaco](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/en/euroleague/teams/as-monaco/roster/mco/?season=2024-25) coach at his former club [Panathinaikos AKTOR Athens](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/en/euroleague/teams/panathinaikos-bc-athens/roster/pan/?season=2024-25) certainly gave us some solid clues.

Firstly, fluidity.

Monaco headed into the game with an average of just 16.7 assists per game, one of the lowest figures in the league. In this game, however, the Roca Team demonstrated excellent ball movement, passing with a good rhythm and always looking for an open teammate to finish with 26 assists.

This should be no surprise whatsoever. Spanoulis, after all, was once the [EuroLeague all-time assists leader](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/euroleague/stats/expanded/?size=25&viewType=traditional&statisticMode=accumulated&seasonMode=All&sortDirection=descending&statistic=assistances) (he now ranks fourth, behind [Nick Calathes](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/en/euroleague/players/nick-calathes/001932/), [Sergio Rodriguez](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/en/euroleague/players/sergio-rodriguez/cvm/) and [Kostas Sloukas](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/en/euroleague/players/kostas-sloukas/001926/)), so the new Monaco boss knows a few things about sharing the ball.

And he is already passing on those messages to his new players, saying after Friday’s win: “When I landed in Monaco I told them that with the talent they have, they have to share the ball more. We were one of the lowest \[in the league\] in assists, so you have to create, to play together and create a winning mentality environment.”

Interestingly, the chief distributor at Panathinaikos was the man who succeeded Spanoulis himself as the competition’s all-time leading scorer, [Mike James](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/en/euroleague/players/mike-james/005985/), who was held to just 6 points in scoring but orchestrated his team’s offensive efforts by dishing 10 assists with just 1 turnover.

And his new coach was extremely happy about that, enthusing: “When Mike James, the best scorer in the history of EuroLeague, passes the ball like this, you can tell this a good team. 10 assists, and not only assists – a lot of the time he created opportunities for some other teammate \[to assist\]. So Mike was unbelievable, like all the guys were unbelievable. Everybody contributed to the game, and I want to congratulate them.”

But basketball is about more than just pretty passing and, along with the fluidity, we also saw the fire.

Spanoulis was nothing if not the ultimately ferocious competitor, and it’s inevitable that his career on the sidelines will see him demand maximum effort from his players. That level of hustle was shown in Monaco’s impressive 39 points off turnovers and transitions, and the coach believes that will continue to be one of his team’s greatest assets.

“This is one of the biggest strengths of this team,” said Spanoulis. “Big athleticism, great hands, deflections, and very fast \[players\] to make easy points in fastbreak. We have great hustle players, role players, guys with huge motivation who are hungry for success. So we have to bring it together, that’s all.”

The Monaco players also gained an early snapshot, however, that their new boss will not be shy to let them know if he feels their effort levels are dropping. During a timeout towards the end of the first half, Spanoulis veered away from making strategic adjustments to deliver a more basic message, rising to his feet as he yelled: “We’ve f\*\*\*\*\*\* got to play better defense!”

Fluidity, fire…and finally, finishing.

Spanoulis is possibly the most clutch performer European basketball has ever seen, time after time using the last seconds of close contests to dig deep and find extra reserves of energy and quality.

And now his Monaco players are already doing the same.

Friday’s game at Panathinaikos featured 25 lead changes, and the outcome was very much in the balance heading into the final 2 minutes with the Greens leading 84-81. But then Monaco took over, with [Vitto Brown](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/en/euroleague/players/vitto-brown/013365/) and [Alpha Diallo](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/en/euroleague/players/alpha-diallo/011226/) netting tough inside baskets before [Jordan Loyd](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/en/euroleague/players/jordan-loyd/009754/) added a (Spanoulis style?) clutch three-pointer and followed up with 2 free throws to seal the deal, with Monaco ‘winning’ the final 2 minutes 4-10.

So, in summary, Monaco shared the ball brilliantly, played with great intensity and knew how to close the deal in crunch time. Fluidity, fire and finishing. Does that remind you of anyone…?

**RECORD BREAKER**: Maccabi's John DiBartolomeo made two free throws with 1:11 left in the second quarter of a win over ALBA and became the owner of the longest streak in EuroLeague history with 70 consecutive free throws made. The previous record was set by Kevin Punter with 69.

Fenerbahce Beko Istanbul will have to continue on without the services of forward [Dyshawn Pierre](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/en/euroleague/players/dyshawn-pierre/010560/) for the time being after the player suffered a calf injury on his right leg during [Friday's home loss](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/en/euroleague/news/milan-staged-a-stunning-road-upset-to-beat-fenerbahce-85-91/) against EA7 Emporio Armani Milan. The team's medical staff checked Pierre out on Saturday at Acibadem Atasehir Hospital and prescribed the necessary treatment.

This season, Pierre's fifth with Fenerbahce, he has averaged 3.0 points and 1.8 rebounds in nine games. For his EuroLeague career, 129 games, Pierre has been worth 7.3 points and 3.7 rebounds per game.

### Anadolu Efes Istanbul vs. FC Bayern Munich (18:30 CET)

After losing its last two games by conceding 93 and 97 points, Efes (6-6) will look for improved defense as it hosts a Bayern team (8-4) also aiming to bounce back. Bayern suffered its heaviest defeat of the season with last week’s 24-points margin at Zvezda, so Gordie Herbert will be keen for his players to regain their usual competitive edge. That includes a return to form for [Carsen Edwards](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/en/euroleague/players/carsen-edwards/011987/), who leads the league with 19.8 points per game but scored just 3 on 1-of-8 field-goal shooting in Belgrade. A bright spot was recent signing [Onuralp Bitim](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/en/euroleague/players/onuralp-bitim/007929/), who scored 13 points in just his second game and now returns to face his former club. Efes will counter him through [Rodrigue Beaubois](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/euroleague/players/rodrigue-beaubois/006590/), who has made at least one three-pointer in eight straight games.

### LDLC ASVEL Villeurbanne vs. Real Madrid (20:00 CET)

After claiming its first road win of the season with last week's *Clásico* thriller, Real (6-6) will attempt to keep climbing the standings with a tough trip to improving ASVEL (4-8). The French team has won two of its last three games behind the excellence of [Theo Maledon](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/en/euroleague/players/theo-maledon/007027/), and ASVEL will also test Real’s perimeter defense with the league’s most accurate three-point shooting game – [Nando De Colo](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/euroleague/players/nando-de-colo/002100/) (11.1 points per game) is one of six ASVEL players shooting at least 40% from downtown. Real’s battling win in Barcelona owed a lot to the magical little and large duo of [Facundo Campazzo](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/en/euroleague/players/facundo-campazzo/005928/), who ranks second in the league in assists with 7.7 per night, and Round 12 MVP [Walter Tavares](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/en/euroleague/players/walter-tavares/005791/), whose average of 8.4 rebounds is far better than anyone else.

### Maccabi Playtika Tel Aviv vs. Paris Basketball (20:05 CET)

Co-leader Paris's efforts to claim a ninth straight victory will be tested by a Maccabi team boosted by last week's big win at ALBA. November MVP [TJ Shorts](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/en/euroleague/players/tj-shorts/012608/), who averages 21.3 points and 8.5 assists over the last four games, will face a fascinating backcourt duel with Maccabi playmaker [Rokas Jokubaitis](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/euroleague/players/rokas-jokubaitis/007519/), who ranks fourth in the league in assists (5.6 per game) and also poured in 24 points as his team netted 103 total last week. That included another big contribution from [Jaylen Hoard](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/en/euroleague/players/jaylen-hoard/006835/), who has averaged 18.0 points over the last four games. This is a meeting between the second- and third-best offensive rebounding units in the league (12.4 and 12.3 respectively), so protecting the defensive glass will be key for the likes of fit-again [Jasiel Rivero](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/euroleague/players/jasiel-rivero/011214/) (5.4 rebounds per night) and [Tyson Ward](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/en/euroleague/players/tyson-ward/012610/) (5.5 rpg).

### Panathinaikos AKTOR Athens vs. FC Barcelona (20:15 CET)

A major showdown between two of the four teams tied for fifth place will see Panathinaikos (7-5) attempt to end a two-game losing streak against similarly struggling Barcelona (7-5), which has lost three in a row. Greens playmaker [Kostas Sloukas](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/euroleague/players/kostas-sloukas/001926/) will make his 400th career appearance and attempt to outshine one of the league's fastest rising backcourt stars, [Juan Nunez](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/euroleague/players/juan-nunez/010106/). Barcelona will have to deal with the athleticism of [Mathias Lessort](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/euroleague/players/mathias-lessort/003842/), who has averaged 16.5 points and 8.0 rebounds over the last four games. That will involve stretching the floor through [Jan Vesely](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/euroleague/players/jan-vesely/000925/), who is on track to attempt more three-point shots than any season since 2011. There was also a strong performance from big man [Brandon Davies](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/en/euroleague/players/brandon-davies/007870/) (12 points, 5 rebounds), and he will now go up against his former club and a matchup with [Laurynas Birutis](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/en/euroleague/players/laurynas-birutis/005504/), who is searching for a return to form after totaling just 4 points in the last three games. Partizan will have to defend the deep threat of [Deividas Sirvydis](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/euroleague/players/deividas-sirvydis/007029/), who has made 9 triples in the last two games.

### Baskonia Vitoria-Gasteiz vs. Fenerbahce Beko Istanbul (20:30 CET)

Boosted by last week's impressive win in Kaunas, Baskonia (5-7) will look to claim another big win by downing high-flying co-leader Fenerbahce (9-3).
