Maccabi wins Israeli League opener

Maccabi Rapyd Tel Aviv began its Israeli League season with a 92-104 road win at Hapoel Beer Sheva/Dimona on Sunday. Fresh off its first EuroLeague win of the season on Thursday over Hapoel IBI Tel Aviv, Coach Oded Kattash’s team carried its confidence into domestic competition.
Team captain John DiBartolomeo paced the winners with 18 points, Marcio Santos scored 17, T.J. Leaf posted 13 points and 6 rebounds and Oshae Brissett and Jeff Dowtin Jr. added 11 points apiece with Dowtin also dishing 6 assists. CJ led Beer Sheva with 20 points and 12 rebounds and Amit Gershon and Brandon Angel scored 16 each.
The game was competitive early, with the hosts showing energy early before Maccabi took control late in the first quarter, going ahead 18-29 after a 0-11 run led by Roman Sorkin and Leaf. Maccabi extended its advantage in the second quarter fueled by Leaf’s back-to-back three-pointers and a balanced offense. Beer Sheva cut the gap to single digits behind Elleby’s scoring bursts, but Tamir Blatt’s perimeter accuracy left Maccabi up 41-55 at halftime.
The third quarter saw Maccabi dominate the pace as DiBartolomeo and Leaf continued to hit from deep, while Sorkin added efficient finishes inside to build a 16-point lead. Beer Sheva struggled defensively and on the glass, allowing the visitors to capitalize repeatedly. In the final period, Maccabi coasted comfortably to a triple-digit score.
