Nikola had the following lineup: team captain Edgaras Ulanovas of Zalgiris Kaunas, Serge Ibaka of FC Bayern Munich, Luka Mitrovic and Nemanja Nedovic both of Crvena Zvezda Meridianbet Belgrade and Chima Moneke of Baskonia Vitoria-Gasteiz as starters.

His sixth man was Mike James of AS Monaco, while the rest of the bench was made up of Crvena Zvezda's Dejan Davidovac, Valencia Basket's Josep Puerto, ALBA Berlin's Kresimir Nikic, and Michalis Lountzis of Olympiacos Piraeus. His head coach was Giannis Sfairopoulos of Crvena Zvezda.

There was no stopping FC Barcelona on Friday night, and LDLC ASVEL Villeurbanne head coach Gianmarco Pozzecco summed it up the best after the game.

"I am sad, because we played an unbelievable game against a team which also played unbelievable. They shot 65.4% on three-point shots," commented the Italian tactician.

Barcelona made 17 of its 26 three-pointers, led by Nicolas Laprovittola. The Argentine guard shot an incredible 8-of-10 from behind-the-arc, a new club record, including 6-of-6 in the second half en route to tying his career-best total of 28 points.

"I have nothing to tell my players. If you play offensively with such percentages, everything becomes impossible," Pozzecco explained.

### A small group caused the damage

What was unusual about Barcelona's three-point feat is that only five different players connected from long range in this contest.

Jabari Parker went 3-of-3, while Oscar Da Silva, Nikola Kalinic and Tomas Satornasky each made 2 triples apiece.

In addition to all that magic from three-point territory, the hosts also converted on 69.0% of their two-point attempts behind big men Jan Vesely and Willy Hernangomez.

Barcelona hit 17 three-pointers against ASVEL

Even though Barcelona had balance, scoring 50 points in the first half and 51 in the second, the way it got to those tallies was different.

Barcelona was an outstanding 14-of-17 (82.4%) on two-pointers in the first half. In the second, the hosts were 11-of-15 from three-point range and made their first 6 attempts from deep in the third quarter.

### Breaking the 100-point barrier

It all led to Barcelona reaching 100 or more points for the first time this season, and for the first time in a non-overtime game since November 2020. The home fans waited even longer, since October 2019, to see Barcelona score in triple digits.

And even though Barcelona's defense left a lot to be desired, the offense led to the team's ninth win of the season as we head into a busy December.

Baskonia Vitoria-Gasteiz showed two sides of itself in the same game on Friday night. After a disappointing first half on the road at Valencia Basket, Baskonia came out and dominated the second [en route to an 84-98 road victory](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/euroleague/news/euroleague-live-blog-valencia-basket-vs-saski-baskonia/) in Round 11 of the 2023-24 Turkish Airlines EuroLeague season.

Dusko Ivanovic’s side gave up 52 first-half points to the lowest-scoring team in the EuroLeague, with Valencia having come into this game averaging just 72.9 points. However, following the halftime interval, Baskonia turned up its aggressiveness and allowed just 32 points after the break. This victory secured its fifth win in six games and saw it improve to a 6-5 record.

“This was two games in one game for my team. The first 20 minutes was one team with a different style of playing offense and defense. In the second half we definitely had more aggressiveness, played good defense, patience on offense,” commented Coach Ivanovic, who has guided the team to a 5-1 record since taking over mid-season.

### Baskonia’s offense flipped the switch

At the same time, Valencia was the second-best defense in the EuroLeague, giving up just 74.8 points per game. But Baskonia blew by that with a season-high 98 points, surpassing the 94 points it scored in a home win over FC Barcelona in Round 8.

“We took care of business in the second half. In the first half they got off to a great start. They fed off their fans’ energy. They wreaked havoc on the defensive end, caused us into some turnovers,” said Markus Howard, who paced Baskonia with 24 points including 6 three-pointers.

“In the second half we corrected some errors, played the right way, executed and made the right plays when it counted.”

Bragging rights are at stake as Valencia attempt to end a four–game losing slump with a Spanish derby against Baskonia, which is also eager to return to winning ways after suffering a late loss to Monaco. This game has plenty of significance as it will break a tie between two teams on the playoff fringes.

### Baskonia improved its percentages

Baskonia had been struggling shooting the ball coming into the game, hitting just 51.2% on two-pointers and 34.6% from long range, ranking 15th and 14th, respectively.

But that was drastically better against Valencia as Ivanovic’s team made 67.6% on two-pointers and 40.7% on three-pointers. The latter number was all the more impressive considering Valencia had been holding its opponents to a second-best 30.9% on three-pointers.

At halftime on Friday evening, Crvena Zvezda Meridianbet Belgrade was staring at what would have been another costly home defeat as it trailed 43-49 to Anadolu Efes Istanbul in a fast-paced Round 11 clash. The visitors looked well and truly in control, with Shane Larkin pulling the strings on offense and Will Clyburn firing on all cylinders.

In addition, new signing Mike Daum rifled in 10 quickfire points for Efes in less than 5 minutes on the court after coming off the bench in the second quarter. A raucous home crowd had gone quiet in the wake of the Efes onslaught.

### Nedovic swung the momentum

It all changed in the third quarter, when Zvezda’s prolific shooting guard Nemanja Nedovic took the game by the scruff of the neck. The 32-year-old poured in 14 points in the period, mixing audacious three-pointers with sizzling drives to the basket as Zvezda turned the tide and took a 70-63 lead.

“We really needed this win and I am very happy that we got it,” Nedovic said in a flash courtside interview. “Everybody stepped up today, especially in the second half. We did a good job at both ends of the floor, so let’s build on this.”

### Rebounds became important, too

Efes had cut the deficit to 72-70 at the end of the third quarter but Zvezda simply had more left in the tank down the stretch, as Luka Mitrovic and Joel Bolomboy dominated the paint in the home straight, with the hosts going on to win 97-83.

Zvezda controlled the boards as it racked up 43 rebounds, 13 of them offensive, while Efes managed a mere 26.

“We were more focused defensively in the second half and to me the most important thing is that the whole team fought hard for this win,” said Zvezda’s head coach Ioannis Sfairopulous. “Offensively we had a very good game throughout, but the key was stepping up our defense in the second half,” he added at the post-game press conference.

“We played a very talented team which knows how to win tough games. We kept the turnovers down after committing 11 in the first half and we had only 3 in the second. Last but not least, I want to thank our fans for their fantastic support,” Sfairopoulos stressed.

Zvezda hope for a quick recovery from a heavy humbling at the hands of Milan by overcoming an Efes squad which is finding its groove with three wins out of four. The hosts have focus on improving its perimeter defense, particularly against Shane Larkin, who's drained 10 triples in his last three games.

### Nedovic got the better of Larkin

Nedovic finished on a game-high 23 points, shooting 4-of-7 from three-point range, 3-of-6 from inside the arc and 5-of-5 from the foul line, and emerged as the game’s top performer after a mature display. When the chips were down, he got the better of Shane Larkin, who netted 21 points on 5-of-13 shooting from the floor.

“Nedovic’s scoring streak was crucial, Yago \[Dos Santos\] was excellent at both ends of the court, but overall it was a team victory,” said Sfairopoulos.

“This team has great talent on offense but today defense was the key. My priority is always how to improve the team defensively and make it more consistent.”

Add in the fact that Coach Mumbru’s squad has played just once at home during its recent slide, [narrowly losing 73-76 to Real Madrid](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/euroleague/game-center/2023-24/valencia-basket-real-madrid/E2023/67/) in Round 8, and the passionate crowd at La Fonteta will no doubt be fired up for this all-Spanish clash. Last season was a tough experience for Valencia up against Baskonia, though.

### Baskonia is firing on all cylinders

Baskonia, then led by Joan Penarroya, did the double over Valencia in the EuroLeague in the 2022-23 campaign. The early part of this current campaign did not go to plan for Baskonia nor Penarroya, however, with the ex-Valencia tactician being given his marching orders after a Round 5 defeat at Panathinaikos that left the club with a 1-4 record. The injury bug struck Baskonia in the early weeks of the season, but Penarroya was nevertheless dismissed and replaced by Ivanovic, who took charge of the Vitoria-Gasteiz-based side for a fourth time.

Since then, Baskonia has not only improved to 5-5 record but could easily have been 5-0 under Coach Ivanovic were it not for some heroics by AS Monaco’s Jaron Blossomgame in the final seconds of last week’s thrilling Round 10 encounter. ### Defense vs. offense

Friday night’s visitors come into Round 11 ranking seventh in the EuroLeague in points, having posted 81.5 points per night, while Valencia has the league’s second-best defense, giving up 74.8 points per game. So, something has to break, right?

Most of Valencia’s success has been down to the way in has held opposition teams to a lower percentage from three-point territory, ranking second in this category as teams shoot 30.9% against Mumbru’s men. Baskonia marksman Howard is the obvious player that Valencia will need to keep quiet, and doing so could end up being one of the keys to the contest.

Fenerbahçe Basketball refused to be beaten against Real Madrid

Only the most optimistic of Fenerbahce Beko Istanbul fans could have predicted that their team [would defeat Real Madrid in Round 11](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/euroleague/news/euroleague-live-blog-fenerbahce-basketball-vs-real-madrid/) of the 2023-24 Turkish Airlines EuroLeague season. Their team was on a four-game losing run and had a 6-5 record, while the visiting reigning champion was a perfect 10-0. No contest, right?

Fortunately, basketball is not played on a sheet of paper, although things did look bad early on. Dimitris Itoudis’s men got off to a horrible start against Real, with Facu Campazzo running rings around the Fenerbahce defense en route to 16 points as *Los Blancos* led 16-29 after 10 minutes. Then, everything changed.

After sweeping aside Maccabi, 70-99, Real continues its own double-round week by travelling to a Fenerbahce team that has won all four games at home so far this season. Expect a physical affair featuring the top three shot blockers, which are Walter Tavares, Vincent Poirier and Georgios Papagiannis.

### A battle commenced

It is unclear just what Coach Itoudis said to his players at the end of that first quarter, but it couldn’t have been positive. As such, Fenerbahce came out for the second quarter reinvigorated and began to turn the game into a battle.

A team like Real would typically welcome that sort of fight, but it was the home side that managed to wrestle back momentum, even making it a one-possession game, 33-35. However, the defending champion put its foot on the gas to close the quarter, meaning it led 37-44 at halftime.

Nevertheless, that change in mindset by Fenerbahce proved to be the key factor in its turnaround. After the break, the Turkish team kept things close, but Real leaned on its array of options to keep Fenerbahce at arm’s length. If it wasn’t Campazzo, it was Sergio Llull. If it wasn’t Gaby Deck, it was Dzanan Musa. And so on and so forth.

It is worth noting that the only lead Fenerbahce had throughout the regulation 40 minutes came with 6:12 to go in the first quarter, as Marko Guduric’s three-pointer nudged the hosts in front, 11-10. Apart from that, the closest Itoudis’s squad could get was tying the score, which it finally did with Scottie Wilbekin’s miraculous triple with 10 seconds left to force overtime, 87-87.

### Wilbekin, Guduric came to the fore

The only way that Fenerbahce could go to overtime in the first place was because of the way in which Wilbekin and Guduric helped the hosts get there. Guduric entered the fourth quarter with 7:44 left, before Wilbekin joined him on the court with 6:42 remaining. From there, they put their fingerprints on proceedings.

Wilbekin, in particular, began to take over. He converted a three-point play to give Fenerbahce hope, 67-78, before knocking down a three-pointer not long after to make it a 6-point game, 72-78. Real responded, but this time it was Guduric’s turn to step up, hitting a couple of free throws and also a triple of his own, 80-82. Wilbekin’s two-pointer with 1:45 on the clock made it 82-83, then he drained a three off an assist from Guduric to tie the game. In just 6:42, Wilbekin exploded for 11 points, with Guduric adding 5.

The duo continued their heroics in overtime, too, with Wilbekin responding to a Llull triple by scoring a mid-range jumper, 89-90. From there, Guduric nailed a three, 92-92, then knocked down a pair of crucial free throws with 6 seconds left, 98-99. But, there was still time for Guduric to make one last telling contribution.

Wilbekin, Guduric stepped up late against Real Madrid

From a Real inbounds situation on its own baseline, the ball was inbounded to Campazzo and he subsequently launched a pass up court after being smothered by Nick Calathes and Nigel Hayes-Davis. That pass, however, ended up in the hands of Guduric, who kept his cool and found Yam Madar.

Speaking of keeping a cool head, [Madar drove to the basket and, under pressure from Llull, converted a high-arching layup off the glass to seal a 100-99 overtime win](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/euroleague/news/yam-madar-rose-to-the-moment-to-help-fenerbahce-basketball-beat-real-madrid/). That took Madar to a career-best 17 points on a night that will be remembered for years and years by Fenerbahce fans.

### Itoudis: ‘We’re back!’

One of the reasons for the pessimism among some Fenerbahce fans was down to the team’s recent results in the EuroLeague. After all, Coach Itoudis’s men came into Thursday’s Round 11 contest on the back of a four-game losing run, which had seen it go from 5-1 to 5-5 and suffer a drop in the standings.

Fast-forward to how they must be feeling after this game and it paints a very different picture. Not only did Fenerbahce get back to winning ways for the first time since November 2, but it also welcomed back Dyshawn Pierre from injury.

The 30-year-old made his 100th appearance in the EuroLeague in Round 11 and was immediately placed in the lineup on his return, while Tarik Biberovic – another player coming back from injury – was available, but he didn’t step onto the court.

“That win is completely a players’ win and a fans’ win,” stated Coach Itoudis in the post-game flash interview. “We stayed altogether, we tried to rotate a lot of players. We were down many times 15, 11, 12, double digits… we never gave up.

“We’re coming from losses, but guess what? It’s not easy to bring people \[back\] from injuries, that’s why I’m saying the congratulations goes to them and the fans. They kept believing, they kept supporting the team. I believe this win will give us more confidence in what we’re doing. Our confidence was a little bit shaky; we had reasons why. But we’re back, we’re back.”

Only time will tell if this win ends up catapulting Fenerbahce up the standings, yet what it did show is that together as a team, the Turkish side is a strong contender to reach the Final Four in Berlin, Germany, next May. There’s plenty of basketball left until then, but Fenerbahce took a big step towards getting back on the right track on Thursday night.

The experienced center recorded career highs in points (24), rebounds (13) and PIR (34), allowing Bayern to secure back-to-back wins for the first time this season.

The German side struggled in the first quarter, where it was outscored 20-28, with Ibaka getting just 4 points. Yet, the Bayern center grew into the game, netted 11 points in the second quarter, and helped the hosts make it a one-possession game, 44-46, heading into the second half.

This is when Bayern bounced back, took the lead for the first time (56-53) since early in the first quarter and finally turned the game around. Ibaka played a key role in Bayern maintaining its lead by dominating in the paint and ending the third quarter with 20 points and 5 offensive rebounds.

Serge Ibaka was a force for Bayern against Virtus

“I think that as a team we did a great job,” Ibaka said after the game. “We started a bit slow in the beginning, but we kept trusting in each other to play the right way. In the second half, we tried to bring intensity on defense and that’s why we got the win.”

Bayern took a narrow 70-66 lead into the last quarter, with players such as Sylvain Francisco and Danko Brankovic stepping up to finish the game off. The former scored 7 of his 13 points in the last 8 minutes of the game. His triple with 5:44 left on the clock gave Bayern its first double-digit lead of the game, 81-71, and dealt a major blow to Virtus, which led by 14 points (23-37) midway through the second quarter.

“It was kind of tough in the first half, but in the second half we had to play hard, especially on defense to make them get hard plays and shots,” Francisco noted. “That’s what we did and we ran a lot. We had to not let them play their game at their pace and play a lot harder on defense and keep fighting.”

Ibaka shined and Francisco stepped up when his team needed him the most, but it was Brankovic who received an ovation from the home crowd. The 23-year-old center finished the game with 7 points, 3 rebounds, 3 drawn fouls, 2 steals and 2 blocks for a career-high PIR of 15. Most importantly, he offered Bayern 15:10 quality minutes on the floor and allowed head coach Pablo Laso to give Ibaka some rest.

“Danko was very good,” Laso said in the post-game press conference. “He gave us a lot from the bench. He was able to play good defense and understood what we needed. He was making shots, making free throws. I think that the way Danko was able to step up on that moment was probably a very important part of the victory.”

After recording its fifth win of the season, Bayern (5-6) will look to build on its momentum heading into the upcoming double-round week. The German side will host EA7 Emporio Armani Milan on Tuesday before traveling to Greece, where they will face Olympiacos Piraeus on Friday.

Monaco exacted a bit of revenge for its loss to Olympiacos in last season’s Final Four while also picking up an important victory in the battle for the playoffs. Monaco improved its record to 7-4 by finishing the game on a 12-4 run over the final 2 minutes. Mike James scored 10 of his 24 points in the final 3 minutes to deliver the victory. Elie Okobo chipped in 11 points. OIympiacos fought hard the whole game back and forth but dropped to 6-5 and had its three-game winning streak snapped. Isaiah Canaan led the Reds with 20 points.

Maccabi got back to winning ways by cruising to victory, 102-81, over ALBA Berlin, which remains at the bottom of the standings with no road wins. The home team wasted little time in racing into a double-digit lead and stayed ahead by at least that many most of the way, knocking down a season-high 15 three-pointers on the way to the team’s highest-scoring game and biggest winning margin of the season. Wade Baldwin led five Maccabi scorers in double digits with 18 points. ALBA’s Gabriele Procida was the game’s leading scorer with 22 points.
