FC Bayern Munich added depth to its perimeter by signing swingman Niels Giffey to a three-year contract, the club announced on Tuesday. Giffey (2.00 meters, 31 years old) started this season with UCAM Murcia where in four appearances he averaged 5.0 points and 3.0 rebounds.
Giffey played for Zalgiris Kaunas last season and he averaged 5.6 points and 2.7 rebounds per game. He is a veteran of four EuroLeague seasons, three of which he played with Bayern's greatest rival and their Round 7 opponent, ALBA Berlin. He spent seven years in Berlin, which was the only team in his professional basketball career for that time. He was the longest-tenured player and a team captain there until joining Zalgiris. Giffey helped ALBA win the German League in 2020. He also lifted German Cups in 2016 and 2020 and reached the 7DAYS EuroCup Finals in 2019. Prior to that, Giffey played at the University of Connecticut and helped it win NCAA Tournament titles in 2011 and 2014. He has also been a member of the German national team.
