Nando De Colo stole the headlines with 32 points as LDLC ASVEL Villeurbanne made it two straight wins with a 91-87 thriller against Partizan Mozzart Bet Belgrade, but the veteran guard was by no means alone as the French team produced a strong all-round team performance.
ASVEL’s task was made more difficult by key big man Youssoupha Fall – who grabbed 18 rebounds the previous week at Barcelona – getting into early foul trouble and eventually fouling out in less than 17 minutes after exerting only a modest impact.
But other players stepped up to illustrate ASVEL’s growing sense of team unity, with Amine Noua grabbing 5 rebounds while Charles Kahudi, David Lighty and Alex Tyus all took 4 boards, allowing ASVEL to win the rebounding battle 29-23 despite the relative lack of input of its best player inside the paint.
The same was true in the scoring department. Jonah Mathews had his seventh double-digit performance of the season with 14 points, and there were also solid contributions from Lighty and Noua with 9 points apiece and Parker Jackson-Cartwright with 7. And to prove that many ASVEL players – not just De Colo – are coming up with big plays, the decisive moment came from Alex Tyus when he stole the ball from James Nunnally on Partizan’s last chance to force overtime.
