In a game that went down to the last possession, AX Armani Exchange Milan escaped the Astroballe with an 80-81 victory over host LDLC ASVEL Villeurbanne on Thursday despite missing several key players.
Milan survives ASVEL in a thriller, 80-81

The visitors led 58-70 early in the fourth quarter, but ASVEL never gave up and had a final shot to win, but Chris Jones missed his jumper. Milan finished the regular season with a 19-9 record, which will be good for third place if Real Madrid cannot win its finale against FC Bayern Munich on Friday. Otherwise, Milan will finish fourth. ASVEL ended its season 8-20.
Malcolm Delaney paced the winners with 24 points on 5-for-9 three-point shooting. Tommasso Baldasso followed with career-high 13 points in just 14 minutes, including a pair of buzzer-beating triples in the second half, and Devon Hall contributed 11 and 6 assists. David Lighty set a personal record by netting 28 points, as did Victor Wenbanyama by making 4 of 5 triples to score 18. Kostas Antetokounmpo had all of his 11 points in the first half while Chris Jones added 10 in the losing effort.

Delaney opened fire for the visitors, but Antetokounmpo got ASVEL going with 5 points in a row and Elie Okobo hit a layup that sent the hosts ahead 7-2. Even though Davide Alviti hit from downtown and Hall added a jumper to tie, the hosts found Wenbanyama in the perimeter twice for 15-9 advantage. Lighty kept ASVEL hot from long distance, hitting a pair of triples, while Milan found Ben Bentil for 5 points to close within 23-20 after one quarter.
Four Milan players scored in a 0-8 run that put the visitors ahead 23-28 early in the second quarter. ASVEL reacted in style, with Jones and Lighty filling a 10-0 run that Wenbanyama capped with another triple that left the home team in front 33-28. Delaney took over then, erupting with 11 points in a row for Milan that made it all square, 39-39. Kaleb Tarczewski put Milan ahead from the line before a nice alley-oop dunk by Antetokounmpo allowed ASVEL to reach halftime leading 41-40.
The guests started strong after the break as Hall and Kyle Hines combined for 9 points in less than 3 minutes that got Milan back in front, 45-50. Delaney's long-range strike soon capped a 4-13 run that forced an ASVEL timeout at 45-53. Alviti drilled a three and Hines lobbed a shot in to make it a double-digit margin, 47-58. Milan remained scoreless for more than 3 minutes after that as ASVEL rallied to within 54-58, but a mid-court buzzer-beating three-pointer by Baldasso kept Milan safe, 56-63, after 30 minutes.
Baldasso remained hot from long range and contributed 5 points in a row to help Milan increase the margin to 58-70 early in the last quarter. The hosts reacted with a 9-0 blast in which Wenbanyama provided a three-pointer and a fastbreak slam to make 67-70. Delaney kept calm, but ASVEL had already found momentum and Lighty completed the rally from deep, giving the hosts a 76-75 lead with less than 2 minutes to go. Baldasso solved a tough offensive situation for Milan by drilling a shot-clock buzzer-beater from downtown, then Delaney scored a one-legged fadeaway that put Milan ahead 76-80. It wasn't over yet, though, as Okobo completed a three-point play with 11 second remaining to make it 79-80. Hall split free throws before Lighty did the same on an unsportsmanlike foul that granted ASVEL the last possession of the game with 10 seconds to go. Chris Jones took the decisive shot, but he missed it and Milan could celebrate thrilling win heading into the playoffs.
