Head-to-head: Rodrigue Beaubois, Efes vs. Nando De Colo, ASVEL

A pair of French guards who started their careers together at Cholet Basket in 2006 and played together until 2009 face off on Friday when Rodrigue Beaubois of Anadolu Efes Istanbul comes up against Nando De Colo of LDLC ASVEL Villeurbanne.

Both Beaubois and De Colo have had good seasons to this point, with the former stepping up in the absence of the injured Shane Larkin and the latter leading a young ASVEL team to some unexpected victories. Beaubois has averaged 12.4 points, 2.9 rebounds, 2.0 assists, 1.1 steals, 1.1 blocks and a PIR of 13.5 across 14 games for Efes. De Colo has posted averages of 13.3 points, 2.5 rebounds, 3.5 assists, 1.0 steal and a PIR of 14.9 in 15 appearances for ASVEL.

The former teammates have have battled a total of 14 times competing on different Turkish Airlines EuroLeague teams since 2016, the year that De Colo won the first of his two EuroLeague titles with CSKA Moscow, the other having come in 2019. Beaubois, who joined Efes in the summer of 2018, has gone on to lift the EuroLeague title twice, as well, in the last two seasons.

With Beaubois wearing an Efes jersey, it has been a close affair whenever he has taken on De Colo's teams. Although De Colo and CSKA won all three of their contests in 2018-19, including in the championship game, it has been a different story ever since. In the COVID-shortened 2019-20 season, after De Colo moved to Fenerbahce Beko Istanbul, Beaubois was on the winning side in their first Istanbul Derby. Efes and Fenerbahce split the series in 2020-21, but in 2021-22 Efes swept its city neighbors, giving Beaubois and De Colo a 4-4 against each other since 2018-19.

In that period, De Colo has averaged 15.6 points, 3.9 rebounds, 4.1 assists, 1.6 steals and a PIR of 19.5 in games against Beaubois, who has averaged 10.3 points, 1.8 rebounds, 2.0 assists and a PIR of 9.8.

De Colo has shot 67.3% from two-point range in those eight games compared to Beaubois's 50.0%. From three-point territory, though, Beaubois has been sharper by 46.7% to 42.9%. Both have been perfect from the free-throw line, with De Colo shooting 19-for-19 and Beaubois 12-for-12 there in each other's company.

Heading into Friday, Efes (8-8) holds eighth place while ASVEL (6-10) is 16th in the standings. De Colo, who sparked ASVEL wins over FC Barcelona and Olympiacos Piraeus in December, will be aiming for the same sort of surprise against Efes at Sinan Erdem Sports Hall on Friday. Beaubois and Efes are looking to rebound from an 80-72 road loss at Maccabi Playtika Tel Aviv.
