Rathan-Mayes catches fire from deep as Bayern 'weathers the storm' to beat Paris

The opening stages of the 2025-26 EuroLeague campaign may not have been what Xavier Rathan-Mayes would have hoped for when he joined FC Bayern Munich in the summer. After netting a season-high 18 points in the opener against Panathinaikos AKTOR Athens, the Canadian guard averaged just 5.4 points in his last seven games heading into Thursday’s clash against Paris Basketball.

Rathan-Mayes was particularly struggling to find his range from deep, having gone 6-for-33 in his first eight EuroLeague games as a Bayern player.

And then came this exceptional fourth-quarter outing against Paris.

Bayern started strong and dominated the boards, taking a 19-22 lead after 10 minutes. The visitors didn’t allow Paris to find its rhythm at any point in the first half and established a double-digit advantage thanks to a 2-12 run in the second quarter.

Paris trailed 42-53 at halftime, but it hit the ground running in the second half, opening the third quarter with a 12-1 surge. The hosts upped their defensive game, forcing 7 turnovers by Bayern, which was held to just 11 points as Paris secured a 68-64 lead heading into the fourth.

Yet, the German side showed character and bounced back with a 1-8 run, which was opened by Rathan-Mayes, who netted his second triple of the night after scoring just 4 points in the first three quarters.

“We weathered the storm,” Gordon Herbert told EuroLeague TV after the game. “They got on a big run, we were down by 4, and we were able to make a couple of big plays on the offensive end.”

Justin Robinson tied the game at 72-72 midway through the closing quarter and then the Rathan-Mayes show started.

The 31-year-old fired on all cylinders, drilling three straight triples to give Bayern a 74-81 advantage with 1:43 left on the clock.

“He made some huge shots in crunch time,” Herbert added. “Both our point guards \[Spencer Dinwiddie and Kamar Baldwin\] were in foul trouble with 4 \[fouls each\] on the bench and he stepped in and did an outstanding job.”

Paris responded with a 5-0 run, as a triple from Sebastian Herrera brought them within 79-81. But an experienced Dinwiddie came to the fore, nailing an off-balance three-pointer to stun the hosts.

“Paris is a team playing the same way being up 10 or down 20,” Vladimir Lucic told EuroLeague TV. “We let them play their game at the end of the third quarter and the beginning of the fourth. But the good thing is that we bounced back with some individual talent, and made some tough shots in the end to get a big and important win here in Paris.”

Herrera nailed a second straight three that cut the difference to 82-84, but Robinson squandered the opportunity to steal the win by missing from behind the rainbow. Dinwiddie picked up a huge defensive rebound and found Lucic, who dunked in transition to seal the outcome.

As for Rathan-Mayes, he ended the game on 16 points, having gone 5-for-9 from beyond the arc.

“We definitely came out to a good start,” Wenyen Gabriel said. “That shows to our preparation and not getting complacent, carrying the momentum. But also, we responded in the second half to the run that happened in the third quarter. \[This is important\] because we have a big, long road stretch coming up and things like that are going to happen. And how we respond will be important.”

Bayern’s home game against FC Barcelona to open the upcoming double-round week will be followed by seven road games in a row.

But Thursday’s performance could serve as a reminder that this team has the character to bounce back from adversity on the road. And in Rathan-Mayes, they boast the player to deliver in clutch moments.

By winning three consecutive games, Baskonia Vitoria-Gasteiz has bounced back from its worst start ever in the EuroLeague and is now 3-6 in the standings. It showed great strength again, confirming that its defense has been much better since it added [Kobi Simmons](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/en/euroleague/players/kobi-simmons/014152/) and regained the services of Rodions Kurucs, who msised time with an injury. After allowing 96.0 points in those six initial losses, opponents have been held to just 77.3 points on average since then.

Baskonia managed to get the win despite [Sailou Niang](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/en/euroleague/players/saliou-niang/012687/)'s career-best effort. Niang was all over the place, amassing 18 points plus 12 rebounds for a PIR of 35 - all career-highs. Niang made 6 of 8 two-pointers (75.0% 2FG) but his teammates combined for just 11 of 30 shots inside the arc (36.7% 2FG). Still, Virtus managed to make a push and when the going got tough, Baskonia went back to its regular go-to guy to make things happen on offense.

Indeed, Baskonia led from start to finish but it was far from being a walk in the park. Virtus rallied from a 13-point deficit to get within 59-57 late in the third quarter. Until then, Baskonia kept the lead due to a balanced offense, but when a go-to guy was needed, [Timothe Luwawu-Cabarrot ](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/en/euroleague/players/timothe-luwawu-cabarrot/012080/)stepped up to make the difference in the game.

[Matteo Spagnolo](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/en/euroleague/players/matteo-spagnolo/008173/) and [Markquis Nowell](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/en/euroleague/players/markquis-nowell/014119/) sparked a game-changing 17-1 run in which Luwawu-Cabarrot did a little bit of everything. He found Nowell for a wide open three-pointer from the left wing, buried his own shot from downtown off the dribble and made a pair of free throws. All of a sudden, Baskonia led 75-59 and was well on its way to a third consecutive win for the first time since December 8, 2023.

"I'm just here to play and help the team in any way that I can. I'm trying to make stops, get rebounds, communicate and be a leader. Whenever I score points, it's just the team looking for me and them having confidence in me just making the shots," Luwawu-Cabarrot said. 

"We finally figured it out. We know we play at home. Of course, we are going to have more energy. We have to stay focused. I think those three wins are amazing. We have to keep building on this. We have tough road games next week and have to stay focused and use these games we had at home to stay strong and keep building."

Luwawu-Cabarrot scored half of his 16 points in the fourth quarter. He has scored 16 points or more in all nine games this season. Last season, he reached the 16-point mark four times in 26 games. [Hamidou Diallo](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/en/euroleague/players/hamidou-diallo/014086/) added 14 and detonated one of the best alley-oop dunks of the season off a no-look pass from Nowell to throw it down with great authority.

"We're starting to figure it out, starting to play together, starting to understand the defensive concepts and we are leaving it all on the floor. I mean, that's what's most important, leave it all on the court and that's what we're doing every night right now," Diallo said after the game. "We didn't have a full training camp with our whole team. We still have guys injured. We are just battling and clawing every night. Happy to get a victory, but we are back to work".

Baskonia has proved to be strong at home and is now ready to test its current momentum on the road. It faces Hapoel IBI Tel Aviv in Round 10 in Sofia, Bulgaria on Tuesday, November 11. A couple of days later, Baskonia goes against Maccabi Rapyd Tel Aviv in Belgrade, Serbia, in a rematch of the 2005 EuroLeague Championship Game, more than 20 years later.

Baskonia Vitoria-Gasteiz bounced to its third consecutive EuroLeague victory by defeating Virtus Bologna 87-76 on Thursday night at Buesa Arena. But basketball was only a small part of the emotionally charged evening.

Both teams took the opportunity to send a message of support to [Achille Polonara](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/en/euroleague/players/achille-polonara/002084/), who is battling myeloid leukemia. Recently released from the hospital after being in a coma for 10 days, the big screen showed photos of the forward, who played for Virtus just last season and spent two years in Vitoria-Gasteiz with Baskonia earlier in his career. Players from both teams gathered on center court before the game with a sign that said "FORZA ACHI".

The video wall showed a picture of Polonara and the following message: "Those who carry fire inside never give up. Forza Achille."

Once the game began, the focus returned to basketball. Baskonia never trailed, using a balanced attack to secure a key victory. But after the final buzzer, Polonara's name was once again on many people's lips.

Coach Paolo Galbiati, who worked with Polonara as an assistant coach on the Italian national team, made on final tribute: 

"Achi, this is for you," Galbaiti said after his flash interview, in Italian, holding Baskonia's Polonara jersey. "I hope to see you soon."

Hapoel thrives on masterclass offense to steamroll Dubai  

EuroLeague debutant Hapoel IBI Tel Aviv set a club scoring record with an impressive 97-109 road win over Dubai Basketball as the visitors produced flawless teamwork and improved to 7-2, while the hosts dropped to 3-6 after a fourth successive loss.

An effervescent third quarter was essential as rampant Hapoel won the period 19-35 to erase a 48-47 halftime deficit and cancel out a mammoth individual performance from Dubai leader Dwayne Bacon, who poured a game-high 36 points. 

Bacon and Dubai were undone by a relentless Hapoel unit led by Elijah Bryant, who paced the Israeli side on 25 points and 7 boards, with four other players finishing in double figures. Vasilije Micic netted 19 points, Antonio Blakeney and Jonathan Motley scored 15 apiece and Dan Oturu added 12, as the visiting team shot 11 of 23 from downtown and racked up 40 rebounds. 

It was too much for a shorthanded Dubai side missing several key players and Bacon’s valiant solo effort could not stop Hapoel from earning a victory that will further boost the team’s confidence after a bright start in its maiden EuroLeague season. 

Bryant, who posted a career high PIR of 36 in his most impressive display for Hapoel since joining the club from Anadolu Efes Istanbul during the off-season, credited his teammates for their selfless work and kept things in perspective as he emphasized it was too early in the season to cork the champagne.

“A testament to my teammates as they were able to find me and getting the win is all that matters,” he said. “It’s a good team win, but it’s a long season and we’ll definitely cherish this one.”

The high-tempo clash was played behind closed doors at Sarajevo’s ZETRA Hall and Hapoel’s head coach Dimitris Itoudis stressed that a lively atmosphere was missing to garnish the action, having also praised his team for bouncing back from the previous round’s tough 62-58 loss at Olympiacos Piraeus.   

“We kept Dubai to under 20 points in the third quarter and that’s a great accomplishment given how talented they are, while scoring 35 points also helped as we hit some amazing shots,” the Greek tactician said.  

“It was weird playing with no fans as that’s not what basketball requires, but we came here with one purpose and that was to bounce back from the last game. Vasa and Elijah did a great scoring job, we took everything Dubai’s defense gave us but we also got some great stops at the other end,” Itoudis added. 

Alongside Bryant, Micic was also instrumental in Hapoel’s victory as he combined sound long-range shooting with dazzling drives to the basket, either scoring on layups or dishing out assists.  

“We didn’t have a good first half as they scored from everywhere, but we had a better approach in the second,” the Serbian point guard said. “We knew what to expect from Bacon, he is a great individual player, but we won as a team and that’s the important thing.”  

Having made a surprisingly good start in Dubai’s debut EuroLeague season, coach Jurica Golemac now faces trying times after the team was brought crashing down to earth with four straight losses. 

“We lost our momentum and made too many mistakes in the third quarter,” the Slovenian tactician said. “They got hot and gained confidence after hitting some open shots, so it was very difficult to come back after they turned the tide.”

“We’re happy to have won this game, following a disgraceful week last week,” said [Wade Baldwin](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/euroleague/players/wade-baldwin-iv/009863/), minutes after his [Fenerbahce Beko Istanbul](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/euroleague/teams/fenerbahce-beko-istanbul/ulk/) overcame [LDLC ASVEL Villeurbanne](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/en/euroleague/teams/ldlc-asvel-villeurbanne/asv/), 81-67.

Despite some extended periods of poor offense, the reigning champions eventually took care of business against a shorthanded ASVEL team.

Last week, the hosts put on a disappointing display against Real Madrid, scoring just 22 points in the first half on their way to a loss. Coming into this one, their record was 3-5 in this year’s EuroLeague campaign. Baldwin said that he believes the key to success was holding onto possession.

“It was much better ball control, for our team and for myself,” Baldwin said.

Baldwin stepped up as the headliner for Fenerbahce, recording 14 points, 4 rebounds and 7 assists. [Nicolo Melli](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/en/euroleague/players/nicolo-melli/002849/) scored 12 and was a board away from a double-double, while three more players scored in double digits.

The result was hard luck on [Armel Traore](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/euroleague/players/armel-traore/010319/), who kept ASVEL alive for a time, eventually leading in scoring with 18 points of his own.

Both teams made a brutal start to the game on the offensive end, logging just 2 points in the first 3 minutes. However, Fenerbahce earned a lead midway through the first and refused to surrender it throughout. Punctuating their superiority, American guard [Devon Hall](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/euroleague/players/devon-hall/011205/) sliced through the lane and added an extra boost with a huge posterizing slam.

“Devon sometimes has this kind of spark,” said teammate Melli. “So, it was nice to see it. He’s a great professional, hard work always pays off and you can see it with him. Not only in those moments, but how solid he is. It was a nice highlight!”

The hosts won the game in spite of some rare substandard shooting performances, such as Talen Horton-Tucker’s 2-for-11. One key stat that worked in their favor, however, was turnovers; Saras Jasikevicius’s men have averaged 14.5 per game this year, but managed to keep it to just 5 against at Ulker Sports and Event Hall.

“It’s very important,” stated Jasikevicius. “We are struggling offensively, but when you are not committing turnovers, at least you get a shot at the basket. In general, at this point, we just take the win, get home and try to get better.”

Fenerbahce will do exactly that, as it moves to 4-5 for the season and has the opportunity to earn a winning record with a double game week coming up.

ASVEL coach Pierric Poupet came out of this difficult loss with a sense of optimism. His team stepped up from a crushing 37-point loss last week and played with pride, despite missing key players such as [Nando De Colo](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/euroleague/players/nando-de-colo/002100/) and [Edwin Jackson](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/euroleague/players/edwin-jackson/000229/) through injury.

“It’s been a tough moment for us, not only last week with the double game week, but we’ve struggled to have enough players to be competitive,” Poupet said before the game.

He carried the sentiment to the locker rooms after the loss: “I’m quite proud of the guys. We competed against a very good team, who will be near the top at the end of the season. Now we have to refresh, get players back and see what we can do. Let’s wait for another positive cycle.”

Sloukas, a team captain and one of EuroLeague all-time greats, is now signed with the Greens until the end of the 2026-27 season.

Sloukas joined Panathinaikos in the summer of 2024 from archrival Olympiacos Piraeus, and in his first season wearing green led Panathinaikos to the 2024 EuroLeague championship as the 2024 Final Four MVP. That was the Green's seventh EuroLeague title, and the fourth for Sloukas who also won a pair of EuroLeague crowns with Olympiacos in 2012 and 2013 as well one with Fenerbahce Istanbul in 2017.

Sloukas, who is averaging 9.0 points, 4.7 assists and 2.0 rebounds this season, is one of the most accomplished players in EuroLeague history. Honored as a member of All-25 EuroLeague Team earlier this year, Sloukas was named to the 2018-19 All-EuroLeague First Team and earned All-EuroLeague Second Team honors in 2021-22 and 2023-24.

He has taken part in eight EuroLeague Championship Games and made it to the Final Four 11 times: five with Olympiacos, four with Fenerbahce and twice with Panathinaikos.

Sloukas ranks second all-time in games played (435), second in assists (1,929), seventh in scoring (4,134 points), fourth in total PIR (5,161) and tied for 10th in three-pointers made (518).

Born in Thessaloniki, Sloukas started his career with local clubs Megas Alexandros and Mandoulides before joining Olympiacos in 2008. He was sent out on a loan to play for hometown Aris Thessaloniki in the 2010-11 season, and upon returning, Sloukas helped Olympiacos win back-to-back EuroLeague titles. He also won the Intercontinental Cup in 2013, two Greek League championships (2012, 2015) and a Greek Cup (2010) before joining Fenerbahce in 2015.

The Greek guard added to his EuroLeague success by bringing a first-ever championship to Fenerbahce in 2017, and the team reached the EuroLeague Championship Game in both 2016 and 2018, too. Sloukas won three consecutive Turkish League titles from 2016 to 2018, as well as three straight Turkish Cups from 2018 to 2020.

In the summer of 2020, Sloukas returned to Olympiacos. Over the three seasons with the Reds, Sloukas won back-to-back Greek League and Cup doubles in 2022 and 2023. The team also had back-to-back appearances in the EuroLeague Final Four, with the Reds falling in the semifinals to eventual champion Anadolu Efes Istanbul, and then in the final to Real Madrid in 2023. Sloukas has been a member of the Greek national team, and won a bronze medal at EuroBasket 2025 in September.

The veteran point guard will stay with the Greens for at least another season

Having tied its longest winning streak in Europe’s premier club competition dating back to the 2016-2017 season, Zvezda also ended a seven-game losing streak against the Greek side, offering its fans a sense of déjà vu with a vintage performance.

It brought back instant memories of an 81-48 drubbing of Panathinaikos on November 4, 2021. Almost four years ago to the day, Zvezda romped to its last previous win over the competition’s 2024 champs and for long spells on Wednesday night, it looked like the hosts might emulate the accomplishment.

Zvezda dominated from start to finish and having carved out a massive 67-40 lead through the opening three quarters, the hosts took their foot off the gas in the fourth as Panathinaikos closed in to make it 78-67. The home team then hit top gear again in the dying minutes and put the icing on the cake with an 8-1 run to close out the contest and go top of the standings.

Once again, versatile point guard [Codi Miller-McIntyre](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/euroleague/players/codi-miller-mcintyre/009048/) stood out with an impressive tally of 14 points, 9 boards and 7 assists, while big man [Chima Moneke](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/euroleague/players/chima-moneke/012201/) posted 14 points and 8 rebounds. [Ognjen Dobric](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/euroleague/players/ognjen-dobric/004007/) racked up 10 points and 5 boards to underline Zvezda’s smooth display.

[Kostas Sloukas](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/euroleague/players/kostas-sloukas/001926/) paced Panathinaikos on 16 points and [Cedi Osman](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/euroleague/players/cedi-osman/004088/) added 14, but the team’s pack leader [Kendrick Nunn](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/euroleague/players/kendrick-nunn/012774/) had a forgettable night as he scored a mere 6 points, shooting 2-of-7 from the floor in the wake of Zvezda’s superb defense.

Coach Sasa Obradovic’s hailed his team’s aggressive pressure which forced Panathinaikos to shoot 0-of-10 from the floor in the first quarter, with Zvezda winning the battle of the boards 44-31 as it took full advantage of injuries to the Greek side’s big men.

“We lost a little bit of energy and focus in the fourth quarter as we had a big lead but we’re going to enjoy the moment,” Obradovic said in his post-game comments. “I am proud of the team for their die-hard attitude and as long as we play tough defense, we are always in with a chance of winning. 

“We did a great job on Nunn, we deserved the win and we move on. We have to acknowledge that the schedule has so far played into our hands, hence we now face a cluster of road games and there will be no resting on laurels.”

With half a dozen key players sidelined by injuries, Zvezda made light of their absence thanks to immaculate teamwork which saw the home team dish out 21 assists while giving Panathinaikos preciously little room to operate. The frustrated Nunn looked a pale shadow of the star player who led the Greens to the 2024 EuroLeague title, as Miller-McIntyre stole the spotlights and ran the show at both ends of the floor. The point guard stayed humble as ever, though, stressing that he wasn’t entirely happy with the performance after Zvezda appeared to go through the motions in the fourth quarter. 

“Honestly, my first thought is that we didn’t do enough in the fourth quarter. It’s a long season and this is the second game in a row that we had a very big lead and then got relaxed in the home straight,” he said.

“I think we need to finish games better but at the end of the day I am happy that we win. We want to prove that we are a good team in every game and every practice but like I always say, celebrate tonight and tomorrow it’s back to work.”

Panathinaikos head coach Ergin Ataman looked strikingly indifferent as his team took a beating through the opening three quarters, showing very little emotion on the bench as Zvezda built its lead in a fervent atmosphere inside the Belgrade Arena. Ataman acknowledged that his team lacked zest and guile against a fired-up rival, having come to life when it was too late for the Greek outfit.

“Some players showed character in the last seven or eight minutes but it wasn’t enough,” he said.” We played terrible offense and made incredible mistakes in the first quarter, after which we lost control and there was no way back.”

With Zvezda firing on all cylinders under Obradovic as he keeps capturing the headlines in his second stint at the Serbian giant, one must wonder whether a degree of complacency has crept into Panathinaikos whose patchy form suggests that the team, if body language is anything to go by, is just not the sum of its parts at present.

How Zvezda and Zalgiris shocked the EuroLeague

After eight rounds of the EuroLeague, more than a fifth of the regular season is behind us, but few could have predicted the current standings.

It has become clear in recent years that in the EuroLeague, anyone can beat anyone, and few games feature a clear favorite.
