Darius Thompson led the winners with 26 points. Elijah Bryant added 21, Shane Larkin had 11 while Tyrique Jones got a 10-point, 10-rebound double-double for Efes. Iffe Lundberg paced Virtus with 14 points. Jordan Mickey added 12 while Marco Belinelli had 10 for the guests.

Partizan, which had lost four of its previous five games, improved to 11-10 while Maccabi dropped to 12-9 after PJ Dozier paced the home team with 23 points and 7 rebounds. James Nunnally posted 20 points before he was ejected for two technical fouls early in the fourth quarter, with Bruno Caboclo also instrumental as he racked up 11 points, 4 rebounds and as many blocks before picking up his fifth foul with 4:05 to go in the fourth. At the other end, Wade Baldwin netted 19 points for Maccabi and Roman Sarkin added 14 for the visitors.

Markus Howard led the way with 21 points on 5-for-9 three-point shooting. Chima Moneke had 13 points and 7 rebounds, Dani Diez netted 11 and Tadas Sedekerskis scored 10 in the victory. Isaiah Canaan had 19 points on 5-for-9 three-point shooting for Olympiacos. Filip Petrusev had 14, Nikola Milutinov collected 12 points, 14 rebounds and 3 blocks, while Nigel Williams-Goss also scored 12.

Friday night's victory gave Barcelona sole possession of second place in the standings. Zalgiris fell to 7-14 despite Edmond Sumner scoring 15 points. The guests shot just 41.2% on two-pointers and 32.1% on three-pointers in the game.

Efes simply wanted it more than Virtus in the first half, when it built a 50-29 lead which pretty much was the key to the game. Efes already led 26-15 at the end of the first quarter which, if you look back at what happened this season, was already a pretty good sign. Everything had to do with Efes's outstanding hustle. The hosts out-rebounded Virtus 19-13 in the first half, and did not allow their opponents even a single offensive rebound. Efes also grabbed 8 offensive boards against Virtus's 13 defensive boards, so 100% of the rebounds available under its own rim and 38.1% of under Virtus's.

There was more. Efes finished the first half with 8 steals and just 1 turnover. On the other hand, Virtus had 0 steals and as many as 12 turnovers, which is very rare in a Turkish Airlines EuroLeague game.

Darius Thompson finished the game with 26 points and Elijah Bryant added 21 off the bench. Both teams combined for a PIR of 58 to lead Anadolu Efes Istanbul past Virtus Segafredo Bologna.

Virtus finished with 18 turnovers, one shy of its worst mark this season. Efes ended up out-rebounding Virtus by 33-28 and its 12 steals tied for ninth-highest total in the EuroLeague this season. Efes previously had 16 steals in a 100-94 home victory in Round 10 against Partizan Mozzart Bet, which is the most this season by any team, tied with Virtus, which had just 6 on Friday. Thompson had 5 steals himself, which matched the most by any player in the EuroLeague this season.

So you see, it was all about the hustle as Efes dominated almost from start to finish and returned to winning ways in style.

“Our player Nigel Hayes-Davis suffered a groin injury during the game against Partizan on Tuesday, January 9,” Fenerbahce announced in a statement. “Following the medical examinations of our player at Acibadem Atasehir Hospital, a first stage adductor muscle injury was detected and his treatment has started.”

In its 24th season, the upwards trajectory of the Turkish Airlines EuroLeague shows no sign of slowing down. In all areas, there has been increased growth as more and more fans continue to engage with the competition and follow the most competitive basketball league in the world.

### Social media leads the way

On social media is where most fans – both new and existing – have been able to see the latest developments in the EuroLeague, whether it is signings in the offseason, the latest plays during games and, of course, the reaction that follows. Across all the EuroLeague's social media platforms, there has largely been triple-digit growth compared to last season. As of December 2023, EuroLeague SM platforms recorded aggregated growth rates of 93% in engagement, 76% in reach, 92% in impressions and 110% in views when compared to that same period in the prior season. [Instagram](https://www.instagram.com/euroleague/) and [TikTok](https://www.tiktok.com/@euroleague) lead the way in new followers.

The EuroLeague has particularly thrived on Instagram, with a 96% rise in impressions, reach, views and engagement, while it is also predicted that the league's account will surpass the barrier of one million followers during the 2023-24 season. By bringing fans ever closer to the action with on-site extensive coverage for the biggest games in the competition, the 129% increase in views – to 161 million – is a result of providing a more immersive experience that resonates with younger audiences.

Two posts garnered a record-number level of attention, too, as there were 1.3 million likes and 22 million views for [Real Madrid's now-famous play that ended in a Sergio Rodriguez-to-Vincent Poirier alley-oop dunk](https://www.instagram.com/reel/C0NDq8YtUkt/), while the most-viewed video in EuroLeague history was [Chima Moneke's decision to miss a free throw and ice the game](https://www.instagram.com/p/C0m5VgHM6V_/), which resulted in 34 million views. The passion shown by the EuroLeague fans in the stands has also repeatedly made the news in outlets around the world.

There have also been incredible numbers on [X, formerly known as Twitter](https://twitter.com/euroleague). The total number of impressions is already at 255 million, which is already over the amount of the entire 2022-23 campaign's 231 million. As such, there has been a 110% jump when comparing the two sets of numbers.

What's more, the number of views accumulated on X so far this season has also doubled when compared to the previous campaign, as there has been a remarkable 131% increase in this department. This is further evidence of how interest in the EuroLeague has gone to another level entirely this season.

On TikTok, there has been a similar jump in terms of impressions, rising 120% to 39 million while [Facebook](https://www.facebook.com/TheEuroLeague) has experienced a solid 40% growth to 103 million impressions. WhatsApp Channels, a new service that was launched this season, reached 400.000 users in just 3 months. Once again, fans are finding EuroLeague basketball on their feeds across all the main social media platforms.  

### EuroLeague TV views multiply 225%

Another major way in which fans are able to follow the league is through [EuroLeague TV](https://tv.euroleague.net/), which has seen a 45% rise in overall subscriptions year-on-year, a 225% increase in total views year-on-year for the season so far and a 114% jump in the total minutes viewed year-on-year to this point in the 2023-24 campaign.

In addition, the introduction of a single sign-in has also provided EuroLeague ID users with the chance to watch free content on EuroLeague TV, which has introduced a number of new innovations for fans to enjoy.

One new feature that has been introduced is a rolling live channel, ELTV 24/7, which is available for all users all day long, including those who do not have a subscription. Then there is The Players' View, which provides an alternative telecast with current and former players' perspective during live games and gives fans the ability to become part of the stream by responding to polls, making it possible for viewers to "like" certain comments, and also putting their questions to the hosts. Jake Cohen, currently on Maccabi Playtika Tel Aviv’s roster, and Michael Roll, with a long career across multiple EuroLeague teams, are the usual hosts of the show, often joined by other guests.

### Video reaching more viewers than ever

The numbers on [YouTube](https://www.youtube.com/euroleague) also show yet more interest in the EuroLeague, as the total views so far this season amount to 15.1 million, up 19%. In terms of total watch time, there has been a 9% jump to 558 thousand hours, while the most pleasing increase has been the 24% rise in channel subscriptions to 446,000 total subscribers.

This overall growth is in line with the live TV numbers posted last season, as there was a 23% improvement in this area. There were 4.46 billion people who tuned in to watch EuroLeague games and content on TV or via digital platforms during the 2022-23 campaign, while the TV audience in total – across live, delayed and repeat, and news and highlights TV coverage – reached 1.15 billion.

### Triple-digit jumps in fantasy games, website

The EuroLeague’s fantasy games is another area which is thriving, having engaged 4.3M fans. Facebook mobile EuroLeague Pick & Play and EuroLeague Draft games have created a solid community of 4.2M participants. The fan-favorite [Fantasy Challenge](https://euroleaguefantasy.euroleaguebasketball.net/en/home) jumped to 170,000 total users for the 2023-24 season, a year-on-year increase of 132% while reaching a total number of teams of 275,000, a 147% rise year-on-year. This growth comes part of Euroleague Basketball's gamification strategy, which has also seen the introduction of the EuroLeague Fantasy Challenge Podcast to increase further interest in the game.

Meanwhile [EuroLeague.net](http://EuroLeague.net), the official competition website and nexus for game coverage, feature stories, opinion and more, has seen 170% jump in views this season even as the relatively new official app has 60% more users.

Real Madrid certainly didn’t have it easy when a determined Valencia Basket rolled into WiZink Center on Thursday night.

Going up against a determined opponent which knew every strength and flaw of the team it was facing, the reigning Turkish Airlines EuroLeague champion was unable to play the free-flowing, offensive basketball it is famous for, as Chus Mateo’s men never looked comfortable nor fully in control.

### A difficult start for Tavares

And those struggles extended to key player [Walter Tavares](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/euroleague/players/walter-tavares/005791/), whose first quarter saw him commit 3 turnovers, miss 2 free throws, blow another shot underneath the basket that he would normally make, watch opposing center Brandon Davies score on him twice, and get whistled for a foul he didn’t believe existed. 

After all that, Tavares was recalled to the bench by Coach Mateo with 8 minutes played, by which time Valencia held an 11-19 lead. At that point, it looked like being a long night for Tavares, especially in the knowledge that his big man partner in crime, Vincent Poirier, was unavailable through injury.

But great players on great teams do not let themselves get derailed by the small matter of a tough start, and it didn’t take long for Tavares to return to the action and play a major part in [Real’s eventual 96-86 overtime victory](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/euroleague/news/euroleague-live-blog-real-madrid-baloncesto-vs-valencia-basket/).

In an intriguing all-Spanish affair, Valencia aim to protect its vulnerable position in the all-important top 10 and recover from back-to-back losses against a relentless Real outfit that remain runaway-leaders atop of the standings and appearing well-prepared to defend their crown in successive seasons.

### Making a key impact

He came back into the game midway through the second quarter and immediately set about doing what he does best: patrolling the paint at both ends of the floor to grab rebounds, deny shots, score baskets and draw fouls.

By the end of the first half Tavares had taken his personal tally to 10 points and 7 rebounds, and he continued to deliver whenever his team needed him – which was pretty much all the time as he compensated for the absence of Poirier by spending nearly the whole 45 minutes on the floor.

By the end of the overtime victory, Tavares's steady contributions saw him play more than 38 minutes to amass 18 points, a new personal-best and club-record 19 rebounds, 2 assists, 7 fouls drawn and, of course, 2 blocked shots for a PIR of 32.

When the action eventually concluded, Tavares was understandably so tired he could barely speak as he stood – just about – in front of the EuroLeague TV cameras. But he did manage to admit he would’ve liked Poirier to be available on Thursday night: “I missed my man Vince! He is injured but I hope he can get healthy quick. I missed him a lot today.”

The focus of the players to withstand overtime had been further tested by a delay of more than 15 minutes before the start of the second half due to technical problems with the clock, making a long night even longer.

It was not, however, as long as Real’s previous home game against Anadolu Efes Istanbul last week, which set an all-time EuroLeague record by going to quadruple overtime. And Tavares believes that unique experience helped his team overcome Valencia on Thursday, saying: “It helped up focus and try to start the next game. 

“We were tired, but we were focused and we got it done.”

And nobody got it done more than Tavares.

Tuesday’s game against FC Bayern Munich saw Llull play game number 1,047 for *Los Blancos*, moving clear of retired big man Felipe Reyes – who was on hand to present Llull with a special commemorative jersey a few minutes before tipoff.

### Llull is like a fine wine

Llull, of course, demonstrated that he is still the man for the big moment by draining the title-winning shot in last season’s Turkish Airlines EuroLeague Championship Game against Olympiacos Piraeus, and his performance against Valencia left no doubt that – even aged 36 – he remains a key member of coach Chus Mateo’s puzzle.

The star guard netted 16 points, making 4-of-8 from three-point range and 2 of his 4 attempts from inside the arc, in addition to dishing 2 assists, grabbing 2 rebounds and making 2 steals in nearly 27 minutes on the floor.

Importantly, that included Real’s opening two baskets in overtime to set his team definitively on their way to victory, and the Real fans showed their appreciation by loudly chanting his name as the game’s final few seconds eventually ticked away.

### A tough stretch for Real Madrid

Llull happily acknowledged the Real faithful and later admitted it was a tough task to come through another overtime thriller in the wake of last week’s quadruple-overtime record breaker against Efes.

“It’s hard to play more than 40 minutes \[again\] but at the end of the day we won, so we’re happy,” he said. “We did a good job in overtime; we started to play better defense and control the rebounds."

Real head coach Chus Mateo acknowledged that his team struggled to find rhythm throughout the contest, which comes at the end of a grueling schedule of four EuroLeague games — including five extra quarters — in the last eight days, joking: “We don’t know which city we’re waking up in when we play so many games!”

One thing is for sure, though: whichever city Coach Mateo and his players wake up in, Sergio Llull will be there and ready to play.

Crvena Zvezda Meridianbet has blown hot and cold this season in the Turkish Airlines EuroLeague, but its latest display was an impressive one as it responded to its 100-91 loss at second-from-bottom LDLC ASVEL Villeurbanne by [beating a rising EA7 Emporio Armani Milan side 62-78](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/euroleague/news/euroleague-live-blog-olimpia-milano-vs-kk-crvena-zvezda/) at the Forum.

Thursday night’s victory completed a topsy-turvy double-round week for Zvezda, with the Serbian side winning three of its last four games and rekindling its hopes of making the postseason as it improved to a 9-11 record.

### The ASVEL game aside, Zvezda is building momentum

Zvezda treated its fans to a cold shower at ASVEL on Tuesday but the club’s faithful will be delighted with road wins at Fenerbahce Beko Istanbul and Milan, which complemented an 88-72 home drubbing of bitter city foe Partizan Mozzart Bet Belgrade.

Milan, which missed four key players through injury, dropped to 9-11 and its head coach Ettore Messina succinctly summed up why his men looked like fish out of water against a fired-up Zvezda team.

“We had no energy tonight,” Messina said in a flash post-game interview. “We made too many mistakes on offense and defense to have a chance to win this game.”

That just about summed up proceedings, as Zvezda served up a massive 4-23 streak to take a 19-37 lead in the second quarter and never looked back. The visitors thrived from spectacular performances by playmaker [Milos Teodosic](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/euroleague/players/milos-teodosic/jdr/), forward [Rokas Giedraitis](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/euroleague/players/rokas-giedraitis/006436/) and center [Joel Bolomboy](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/euroleague/players/joel-bolomboy/009035/), as the trio dominated at both ends of the court.

Having given up an avalanche of points against ASVEL, Zvezda shored up its defensive leaks and stifled out Milan with super-aggressive half-court pressure, which forced a barrage of turnovers. Milan committed 15 while managing only 14 assists, having made just 6-of-22 shots from downtown.

### Zvezda’s reliable trio stepped up

Player of the game Giedraitis, who racked up 22 points and 6 rebounds, was quick to point out that the ASVEL fiasco had galvanized Zvezda to put its game face on at Milan.

“Our mindset was on defense first of all because after the loss to ASVEL, we needed to step up,” said the Lithuanian sharpshooter.

“Everybody did a great job and we deserved to win today. We knew after the opening two quarters that they were going to step up. This is Milan, they fight until the end, but we responded.”

Teodosic posted 9 points and 5 assists, including a no-look pass over the top which found Dejan Davidovac unmarked for a three-pointer late in the second quarter.

Teodosic’s display also prompted Bolomboy to heap praise on the 36-year-old veteran, who seems to have been given a second lease of life at Zvezda as he keeps rolling back the years against the competition’s big guns.

“He definitely makes life easier, especially on the offensive end,” said Bolomboy, who amassed 14 points and 6 boards. “He is able to facilitate, he makes the right reads all the time and has the ability to shoot. We were disappointed after the game against ASVEL as we conceded 100 points, so coming into this game, the mindset was to focus on defense.”

Head coach Ioannis Sfairopoulos also underscored that defense was key to victory at Milan, with Zvezda racking up 37 rebounds (11 offensive) and forcing Milan to take a barrage of tough shots from all angles.

Shabazz Napier, who had hoped to do some damage after an acrimonious split with Zvezda last month, was especially ineffective as he managed a mere 6 points on 2-of-10 shooting from the floor. Napier had joined Zvezda from Milan during the offseason but returned to Italy after several difficult months in Belgrade, including a 71-93 Milan win in the reverse fixture when Napier still donned Zvezda’s jersey.

“We reacted really well to the defeat at ASVEL and proved to ourselves, first and foremost, that we can play good defense,” Sfairopoulos commented. “We allowed only 62 points and controlled the game with our good defense. \[Branko\] Lazic did a great job on that end today, as consistent defense is the most important thing whether a player scores or not.”
