It was a tale of two halves as Maccabi Playtika Tel Aviv beat Virtus Segafredo Bologna 95-78 on Wednesday night in Belgrade.

It was a tale of two halves as Maccabi Playtika Tel Aviv beat Virtus Segafredo Bologna 95-78 on Wednesday night in Belgrade. After a back-and-forth first half in which Virtus led by 8 points in the second quarter only for Maccabi to take a 46-45 lead into halftime, after the break it was all Maccabi.

And it all started with its defense.

"Defensively it was two totally different halves", Maccabi head coach Oded Kattash said. "Second half it was a big effort by the players."

Maccabi ended up allowing 33 second-half points, but 10 of those came in the final 60 seconds of the game, including a pair of triples in the final 18 seconds.

Maccabi was already up by 90-72 at that point when Belinelli knocked those down, with the win secure in its pocket.

Maccabi's defense was not just impressive against Virtus's third-ranked scoring offense, it held Tornike Shengelia to just 9 points and 4 assists while forcing him to 3 turnovers.

Meanwhile, Maccabi was shooting the lights outs, connecting on 13 of 25 (52.0%) from three-point land. For comparison, Virtus was 7 of 15 (46.7%) from the free throw line.

"I am happy we responded after an embarrassing loss against Fenerbahce," said Maccabi guard Wade Baldwin, who paced the team with 22 points, 8 assists and 5 rebounds.

Maccabi did, indeed, do a great job bouncing back after a 35-point loss against Fenerbahce Beko Istanbul in Lithuania last week. That defeat came two days after an impressive win over AS Monaco.

This time, in two nights, Maccabi will be staying in Belgrade to play across the river in Stark Arena against Partizan Mozzart Bet.

"We need to learn from last double week. When we played after 48 hours, we were not there with our energy. And that is our challenge right now, to show that we learned our lesson", Kattash concluded.

Barca started the game without center James Nnaji and shooting guard Nico Laprovittola, who joined Alex Abrines in the team's injury list. That left head coach Roger Grimau with fewer options at center and one pure shooting guard, Dario Brizuela, available for this game.

Led by an outstanding Jabari Parker, who had 11 points in a 18-7 opening run, Barca was ahead of the Reds for the best part of the game. Olympiacos rallied from that double-digit margin and took a 40-41 lead near halftime. An outstanding Willy Hernangomez allowed Barca to get a 75-61 margin late in the third quarter but the ever-resilient Olympiacos came back again.

Willy Hernangomez finished the game with 16 points while Nikola Kalinic and Tomas Satoransky each added 13. Along with Jabari Parker, they combined for a PIR of 75, more than the entire Olympiacos team (72).

Barca had to face more bad news: Jan Vesely, its fourth-quarter go-to guy in its wins against Real Madrid and Baskonia Vitoria-Gasteiz, fouled out in a critical moment, when Olympiacos had rallied within 79-76 with 4 minutes remaining. Barca improved its defense when it mattered most and its most experienced players played decisive roles.

Hernangomez grabbed a critical offensive rebound, drew a foul and made free throws. Nikola Kalinic buried a five-meter jumper from the top of the key. While the ball was in the air, Hernangomez was fouled, which allowed the hosts to get the ball back. By the time playmaker Tomas Satoransky struck from downtown, Barce had sealed the outcome.

When the dust settled, Hernangomez finished the game with 16 points while Kalinic and Satoransky each added 13. Along with Parker, they combined for a PIR of 75, more than the entire Olympiacos team (72).

"We fought really hard against a really good team, really well-coached so a big win for us," Hernangomez said. "Great year so far, 2024, for us. We fought really hard. We must win every single game here, at Palau."

"We were a little bit short-handed and the ups and downs are normal, but I am super happy that we were able to defend well at the end because the offense didn't work for us at the end of the game and we were able to win it," Satoransky added. "It is super important to keep adding victories, especially at home."

Despite missing two key players and losing another to 5 fouls in the fourth quarter, Barca held on for a quality win.

Milan edged a tight contest to overcome ALBA at the Forum, improving to 9-11 and moving closer to the playoff places, while the German team is still waiting for its first road win of the season. It was an extremely close game with 19 lead changes and neither team leading by more than 6 points at any time, but Milan found enough offense in the crucial final quarter to take the win. Nicolo Melli paced the winning team with 16 points, while Devon Hall and Diego Flaccadori scored 14. ALBA was led by Johannes Thiemann with 13 points and 6 rebounds.

Zalgiris snapped a four-game road losing streak by edging Valencia at La Fonteta in Round 20 on Tuesday. Zalgiris improved to 7-13 in the standings while Valencia dropped to 10-10. Keenan Evans paced the winners with 24 points on 6 of 9 three-point shooting. Edgaras Ulanovas added 14 points and Rolands Smits had 12 for Zalgiris. Brandon Davies paced Valencia with 18 points in defeat.

ASVEL is on its first winning streak of the season after beating visiting Crvena Zvezda on Tuesday night. For the first time this season ASVEL has won two games in a row, this one coming under new head coach Pierric Poupet, as the team improved to 4-16 on the season. Zvezda dropped to 8-12 record. Paris Lee tallied 23 points and 7 assists and Joffrey Lauvergne scored 17 points to lead the winning effort. Nemanja Nedovic paced Zvezda with 26 points.
