Panathinaikos B.C. had around 2,000 passionate fans inside Mercedes-Benz Arena cheering it on as it beat ALBA Berlin 85-99 in Round 7 of the 2023-24 EuroLeague Regular Season.

Panathinaikos B.C. felt at home in Berlin, clinched first road win

Panathinaikos Athens had little reason to be optimistic after its two first two road games of the 2023-24 Turkish Airlines EuroLeague Regular Season. In Round 3, Fenerbahce Beko Istanbul defeated the Greens 83-69 in Turkiye, reaching a 25-point difference early in the fourth quarter. Then, last week, FC Barcelona downed Panathinaikos 80-72 at Palau Blaugrana, with the Greens trailing 75-47 after 32 minutes.

But, in Berlin, it was a far more positive experience for Panathinaikos as it won for the first time on the road this season. The visitors [came away from Mercedes-Benz Arena with a solid 85-99 victory](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/euroleague/news/euroleague-live-blog-alba-berlin-vs-panathinaikos-bc/), which [included scoring 60 points in the first half](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/euroleague/news/high-flying-first-half-offense-lifted-panathinaikos-bc-past-alba-berlin/) with out-of-this-world percentages from all distances.

At the foot of the standings, ALBA seek recovery from a hard-fought loss at Valencia, in which Sterling Brown continued his strong form alongside Matt Thomas, whereas Panathinaikos are re-equipped with Kostas Sloukas and Luca Vildoza for selection since they missed the trip to Barça.

### Incredible support from its fans

Despite playing 1,800 kilometers away from Athens, the Greens felt like the home team at certain points during the night, especially during a first half that saw Ergin Ataman’s side play towards the 2,000-plus Panathinaikos fans that had made the trip to Mercedes-Benz Arena.

Given that the total attendance was 13,247, the fourth highest in ALBA’s EuroLeague history, according to Darius Garuolis, a significant number of that is down to the Panathinaikos fans. More than an hour before tipoff, the Greens’ supporters filled the stands at ALBA’s home, while some of them even went to their team’s hotel to offer some extra encouragement to the players before they made their way to the arena.

Their support was something Coach Ataman and his squad were well aware of, making them feel comfortable with the atmosphere despite playing far away from their home court, OAKA.

“Thank you very much to all Greek people who arrived here, \[to those\] that live here, \[those that arrived\] from Greece, from Athens and from everywhere else. It’s a good victory for us because it’s not easy to beat ALBA here,” Ataman stated in the post-game flash interview.

### Ataman, Grigonis want more

The Turkish tactician knows how important the fans’ support is for his team, and he hopes for a similar level of backing in the Greens’ upcoming games at home.

“I hope that next week, all of our supporters, Panathinaikos’s fans, will \[make it\] a sellout at OAKA for these two home-court games \[against Zalgiris Kaunas on Wednesday and Virtus Segafredo Bologna on Friday\],” he added.

It was a particularly special night for Panathinaikos guard [Marius Grigonis](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/euroleague/players/marius-grigonis/002328/), who spent the 2017-2018 season with ALBA. On his return to Berlin, the 29-year-old guard became one of his team’s main weapons, finishing with 16 points on 4-of-8 shooting from behind the arc and a PIR of 19. He also gave credit to the Panathinaikos fans that accompanied the team.

“At OAKA it’s a bit louder, but I’m happy \[they were here\],” said Grigonis. “I think they probably live here in Berlin or something, because last year it was the same. I’m always happy \[they come to cheer us on because\] Greek fans are really passionate about basketball and it’s always fun.”

Grigonis, the same as Ataman, called for this kind of support in the Greens’ upcoming two home games in the double-round week: “I want to ask them to keep this up. They are excellent and we really enjoy their support. Basketball is really fun when someone is supporting you.”

After a summer of upheaval at OAKA, with a new head coach arriving in Ataman and a plethora of new signings, things seem to slowly clicking into place for Panathinaikos. Now that it has its first road win under its belt and improved to a 3-4 record in the process, a successful double-round week could see the Greens’ momentum continue to grow and grow.

Maybe it took him a few weeks to get going, but last season's Final Four MVP, three-time EuroLeague Best Defender and four-time All-EuroLeague center [Walter Tavares](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/euroleague/players/walter-tavares/005791/) was everywhere in Real Madrid's dominant [100-74](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/euroleague/game-center/2023-24/real-madrid-virtus-segafredo-bologna/E2023/59/) win over Virtus Segafredo Bologna on Thursday night. Playing a season-high 25 minutes, Tavares also had many other season highs: 17 points on 7-for-11 shooting, 7 rebounds and 4 assists. He had 1 steal, something he also achieved in Round 3 against Zalgiris Kaunas and 2 blocks, which is 1 less than he achieved in that same game against Zalgiris. The 31-year-old finished with a PIR of 28, which is more than what he had in his first four appearances of the season combined.

Fenerbahce Beko Istanbul forward [Nigel Hayes-Davis](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/euroleague/players/nigel-hayes-davis/008962/) played all but 2 seconds during a 40-minute battle against Partizan Mozzart Bet Belgrade, but his efforts came up just short in a dramatic [85-84](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/euroleague/game-center/2023-24/partizan-mozzart-bet-belgrade-fenerbahce-beko-istanbul/E2023/58/) loss. Hayes-Davis had a memorable first half for a depleted Fenerbahce side, during which he scored 21 of his game-high 23 points. During the first 20 minutes, he made all 8 of his field-goal attempts and both foul shots, while he was also on the floor for every second as Fenerbahce built a double-digit lead. Partizan appeared to find a way to neutralize him after the break, however, as he only had one more field-goal attempt the rest of the way. Hayes-Davis finished the game a perfect 5-of-5 for two-pointers and 3-of-4 on three-pointers, as well as making 4-of-4 free-throw attempts. He also collected 6 points, 3 assists and 1 steal, accumulating a PIR of 35.

### Willis's first double-double

Anadolu Efes Istanbul pulled out an [86-82](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/euroleague/game-center/2023-24/anadolu-efes-istanbul-zalgiris-kaunas/E2023/55/) overtime win against Zalgiris Kaunas in Round 7 and [Derek Willis](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/euroleague/players/derek-willis/009664/) found just the right time to produce the best game of his rookie season. Willis played 39 minutes and 39 seconds and not only scored 11 points, the first time he finished in double figures, but also pulled down 10 rebounds. He added 2 blocks and 1 steal to his double-double. Willis also came through in clutch, hitting back-to-back fourth-quarter triples that gave Efes a 7-point cushion, a lead it ended up squandering, but that does not take away from Willis's performance and his role in this win.

### Mitrovic left everything out there for Zvezda

Crvena Zvezda Meridianbet Belgrade may have lost [86-81](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/euroleague/game-center/2023-24/fc-barcelona-crvena-zvezda-meridianbet-belgrade/E2023/63/) to FC Barcelona in Round 7, but [Luka Mitrovic](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/euroleague/players/luka-mitrovic/002553/) could certainly walk off the court with his head held high. The 30-year-old forward scored a game-high 22 points after going 8-of-15 on two-pointers and 6-of-6 from the free-throw line, but he also gave Zvezda plenty of second-chance opportunities by grabbing a career-high 6 offensive rebounds. Zvezda finished the night with 18 offensive boards and 44 overall, meaning that Mitrovic was responsible for 33.3% of his team’s second-chance possessions on the offensive end. Unfortunately for Mitrovic and Zvezda, though, it ended up coming in a losing effort.

### Mitoglou took control for Panathinaikos

Panathinaikos Athens welcomed back [Dinos Mitoglou](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/euroleague/players/konstantinos-mitoglou/007866/) in the offseason and the 27-year-old has hit the ground running since making his second debut for the club in Round 4. On Friday night, Mitoglou had a 24-point, 10-rebound double-double as the Greens grabbed their first road win of the season, beating ALBA Berlin [85-99](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/euroleague/game-center/2023-24/alba-berlin-panathinaikos-athens/E2023/61/). That is the fifth double-double of Mitoglou’s 110-game EuroLeague career and his first in just under two years and 10 months, as his last double-double came on January 21, 2021, in a 94-78 win for Panathinaikos against Khimki Moscow Region. Mitoglou has now scored 20-plus points in two of his four appearances this season, having previously netted 23 in Round 5 against Baskonia Vitoria-Gasteiz, and his play is one of the main reasons for optimism among the Greens’ supporters.

In a French League derby against a much-improved LDLC ASVEL, it was Alpha Diallo who led AS Monaco Basket to an 80-70 win, the team's fifth straight.

When one thinks about AS Monaco, it is the team's superstar backcourt that first comes to mind, headed by Mike James and with Elie Okobo, Jordan Loyd and Kemba Walker alongside him. However, the strength of this team is also its depth and the way in which so many pieces on the roster can step up on any given night.

One of the players never to be overlooked is swingman Alpha Diallo. On Friday, in the French League derby against a much-improved LDLC ASVEL Villeurbanne, it was the 26-year-old who [led Monaco to an 80-70 win](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/euroleague/news/euroleague-live-blog-as-monaco-basket-vs-ldlc-asvel/), the team's fifth straight.

Diallo's performance, a 21-point effort, was much needed because Monaco found itself in a hole, down 11 points before the end of the first quarter against a confident opponent.

"We cannot enter a EuroLeague game so sloppy,” Monaco head coach Sasa Obradovic said after the game. "Without energy, without intensity."

### Alpha Diallo to the rescue

But there was Diallo to make things better. He opened the second quarter with a three-pointer, then capped an 11-0 run late in the second with back-to-back triples that gave Monaco a 39-34 lead.

After ASVEL rallied and went in front again, Diallo showed up on offense once more.

His back-to-back three-pointers early in the fourth quarter put Monaco in front, 64-63, then in the penultimate minute of the game Diallo had a four-point play, knocking down a triple while drawing a personal foul from Timothe Luwawu-Cabarrot. It opened a 75-68 margin and Monaco never looked back.

When all was said and done, Diallo did not just have a good game shooting from long range, but he tied a club record after making 6 three-pointers on 9 attempts. In addition to his 21 points, he also led the team with 9 rebounds and 3 steals.

### Kind words from Coach Obradovic

After the victory, he got praise from Coach Obradovic, but not for his three-point shooting.

"That's not something to expect every night", Obradovic said about Diallo's 6 triples. "Maybe you expect Jordan \[Loyd\] to do it, and I think that will come for him, too. It is only a matter of time until he catches his best rhythm.

"Diallo definitely plays both sides of the ball. We are giving him freedom. He was never a ball creator before, but I gave him an opportunity as a third point guard to run the play. He is a very ambitious, very smart guy who can read the game."

However, Obradovic pointed out that it's what Diallo does on defense that makes him hard to replace on this Monaco team.

"It is a big thing, being a lockdown defender,” Coach Obradovic added. “You know that good things will happen if you play him.” And good things certainly did happen for Diallo and Monaco on Friday night.

Campazzo also collected 6 rebounds, 3 steals and drew 9 fouls for a career-high 39 PIR. This is the 32-year-old’s first MVP of the Round honor, coming after 128 career appearances.

The final 80-70 scoreline is the only double-digit lead that Monaco had, and the teams were tied at 68-68 with just 3:15 to go.

However, Monaco did not allow a single basket in the next 3 minutes, forcing four consecutive missed shots by the visitors to come away with the victory.

Parker’s performance compensated for a tough night endured by Barcelona’s backcourt, as guards Alex Abrines and Nicolas Laprovittola netted a mere 5 points between them.

“We beat a hell of a team. \[It was\] tough because they exploited our weaknesses throughout the game,” Parker said in a flash courtside interview as he walked off the floor. “They are well coached and well operated. But we’re a good team and I am only as good as my teammates. They help me patiently every day and I am happy to be here.”

### Barcelona leaned on its inside shooting

Zvezda thoroughly dominated the boards, having amassed a total of 44 rebounds to Barca’s 27, but the home side thrived on close-range shooting as it nailed 26-of-39 shots from two-point territory.
