In just his second Turkish Airlines EuroLeague game on the sidelines for the French club, head coach Gianmarco Pozzecco guided LDLC ASVEL Villeurbanne to a memorable come-from-behind victory over Zalgiris Kaunas at Zalgirio Arena.

Gianmarco Pozzecco arrived at LDLC ASVEL Villeurbanne as a head coach driven by his passion. And the Italian playcaller’s energy and push from the sidelines has immediately had an impact on the French team, which snapped the EuroLeague’s second-longest losing streak in history in just his second game at the level.

Pozzecco’s famous energy was fully on display just after the buzzer of ASVEL’s 88-91 win at Zalgiris Kaunas. The 51-year-old ran along the sidelines to shake hands with the Zalgiris coaching staff before dashing back to his players and jumping onto a group of them as if they had won the EuroLeague crown. He was held up by the players and Pozzecco was screaming in joy.

"I am really \[expletive\] happy. You cannot even imagine, because I love my players just like my wife and my daughter. That is the only way I can coach," said Pozzecco, who was leading his second EuroLeague game after taking over from TJ Parker.

At the post-game press conference, Pozzecco apologized for his behavior after the final buzzer: "I want to apologize to \[Zalgiris Coach Kazys Maksvytis\] because I shook his hand so fast because I wanted to be with my players immediately and celebrate with them."

Pozzecco has not changed his demeanor at all from previous positions, most notably the Italian national team. He was ejected from the Round of 16 of the FIBA EuroBasket 2022 against Serbia and, after Italy finished off a shocking come-from-behind win, Pozzecco famously raced back into the inner bowl of the arena to celebrate with his players.

The Italy team then nearly beat heavily favored France in the quarter-finals. At the FIBA Basketball World Cup 2023, Pozzecco helped Italy reach the quarterfinals for the first time in 25 years.

Pozzecco had success before that though too. He played for nearly 20 years as a small point guard with good technical skills and an excellent shooting touch. He won two Italian League championships and also captured the silver medal with Italy at the 2004 Olympics. As a coach, Pozzecco guided Dinamo Sassari to the FIBA Europe Cup crown in 2019.

The ASVEL players definitely have accepted Pozzecco's passion, which he has brought along with his long-time assistant coach and right-hand man Edoardo Casalone.

"\[Pozzecco\] gives a lot of passion for sure. As you know, when the coach changes in every team all over the world there is always a reaction from the players. Now we just need to keep it as much as possible for the rest of the season," said ASVEL center Joffrey Lauvergne.

Even though Pozzecco has only been with the team for less than two weeks, the ASVEL players have already bought into the Italian’s ideas. That was clearly evident by Paris Lee’s reaction to Pozzecco late in the game - something the coach called "amazing" when he recalled it afterward.

ASVEL had finally in the fourth quarter been getting defensive stops after giving up 80 points through 30 minutes. But the French side was struggling to produce offensively and still trailed 86-82 with 3 minutes left.

Pozzecco said he was thinking about putting Lee back into the game because it needed the playmaker’s offense. But at the same time, the coach didn’t want to change up the switching defense his players had been performing so well in coming back from 13 points down late in the third quarter.

"\[Paris\] looked at me and winked and said: 'Are you sure coach? They are playing good.' I said: 'Okay Paris, you choose what you want to do.' He said: 'Let ‘em play'," Pozzecco recalled.

"That is something that for me is more than anything else. With this kind of atmosphere building a relationship in the locker room between players means a lot for me because I was only here one week. That signal was unbelievable."

ASVEL ended up winning and snapping a losing streak that dated back 9 months and 7 days. And everyone around the club hopes the worst is behind them.

"We will need time to fix everything," Pozzecco said. "But I am really happy to be with ASVEL. We will surprise people. I hope."

It wouldn’t be a surprise given the team’s talent and Pozzecco’s passion.

Veteran center [Brandon Davies](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/euroleague/players/brandon-davies/007870/) was a big reason why Valencia Basket pulled out a hard-fought [79-71](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/euroleague/game-center/2023-24/valencia-basket-alba-berlin/E2023/53/) win over ALBA Berlin. Davies finished the game with 14 points, making 7-of-10 two-point shots, while he also collected 3 assists, 2 rebounds and 2 steals. He had a PIR of 14, and a plus/minus of +11. Even more importantly, the majority of his production came with the game on the line. With Valencia down 63-67 and 3:40 minutes to go in the game, Davies pulled down an offensive rebound that allowed Semi Ojeleye to score a second-chance triple. Then, a minute later, Davies started his personal run of 8 consecutive points to make it 76-69 with 70 seconds left, before icing the game with a dish for Ojeleye's three-point play that secured Valencia's fifth win of the season.

### Pierre's record pre-injury impact

Fenerbahce Beko Istanbul held off Olympiacos Piraeus [79-77](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/euroleague/game-center/2023-24/fenerbahce-beko-istanbul-olympiacos-piraeus/E2023/50/) on Thursday night in a dramatic finale, as it held on to a big lead it built in the first quarter. The main protagonist of Fenerbahce's fast start was small forward [Dyshawn Pierre](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/euroleague/players/dyshawn-pierre/010560/). In the opening 8 minutes and 20 seconds of the contest, Pierre made all 6 of his shots, going 2-of-2 on two-pointers, 3-of-3 on triples and 1-for-1 from the free-throw line. He amassed 14 points, along with 1 steal, 1 rebound and 2 drawn fouls, helping Fenerbahce jump to a 29-13 lead it never relinquished.

Unfortunately, Pierre exited the game at that time due to a calf strain and he never returned. This injury will sideline Pierre in the coming weeks, but it did not stop him from making a huge impact on the game. As a matter of fact, no player this century has amassed a higher PIR (18) than Pierre in fewer than 10 minutes of playing time.

FC Barcelona came into its Round 6 game against Panathinaikos Athens without two of its main guards, as Nico Laprovittola and Rokas Jokubaitis were sidelined. [Tomas Satoransky](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/euroleague/players/tomas-satoransky/002939/) stepped up for his team, avoiding mistakes and leading Barca to an [80-72](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/euroleague/game-center/2023-24/fc-barcelona-panathinaikos-athens/E2023/51/) home victory against the Greens. Satoransky finished the game with 10 points, 7 rebounds, 3 assists and 0 turnovers, good for a PIR of 17 in less than 20 minutes on the floor. Satoransky already had those numbers late in the third quarter. When he went to the bench for good, Barca led 61-41 and was well on its way to its fifth victory from six games. Despite playing 22 minutes per night so far this season, Satoransky is helping Barca in many ways, averaging 7.7 points on 42.1% shooting from three-point range, 4.8 rebounds, 3.0 assists and just 1.2 turnovers in six appearances, good for a PIR average of 11.0.

### Miller-McIntyre almost made history

Chima Moneke stole many of the headlines for his game-winning free throws in Baskonia Vitoria-Gasteiz’s narrow [84-83](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/euroleague/game-center/2023-24/baskonia-vitoria-gasteiz-partizan-mozzart-bet-belgrade/E2023/52/) win against Partizan Mozzart Bet Belgrade, but [Codi Miller-McIntyre](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/euroleague/players/codi-miller-mcintyre/009048/) was ever so close to making EuroLeague history during the game. The EuroLeague rookie almost finished with a triple-double for Baskonia, as he recorded 9 points, 8 rebounds and 8 assists in just under 30 minutes on the floor. Miller-McIntyre showed his qualities to new head coach Dusko Ivanovic, who is back at Baskonia for a fourth stint in charge, and it will be interesting to see if he keeps up this level of play in the coming games. Just two players have had a triple-double in the EuroLeague this century, with Nikola Vujcic doing so twice and Nick Calathes achieving this feat once, and Miller-McIntyre almost joined this exclusive club with an incredibly impressive display in Round 6.

Nearly all of them, however, have come outside of his home country, Serbia. Among the reasons that the former EuroLeague MVP joined Zvezda last summer was to play at home on the club level for the first time since 2007, when he was just 20 years old.

On Thursday, when Zvezda needed him most, Teodosic delighted the Belgrade faithful with a memorable reminder of why he is a Turkish Airlines EuroLeague icon. The now 36-year-old virtuoso came off the bench against FC Bayern Munich to amass 16 points, 11 assists, 2 steals and a team-high performance index rating of 22.

In so doing, Teodosic notched the 18th point-assist double-double of his career, putting him second all-time behind in that niche behind only Nick Calathes. Teodosic also became the third-oldest player to ever dish 10 assists in a EuroLeague game, after Vassilis Spanoulis and Damir Mulaomerovic. His was the first points-assists double-double by any Zvezda player since Taylor Rochestie's 16 points and 10 assists to beat Zalgiris Kaunas in January 2018.

Another impressive stat was Teodosic's plus/minus of +21 in 27 minutes, meaning that in the 13 minutes he spent on the bench, Bayern outscored Zvezda by 15 points.

Most important, though, was Teodosic's timing and leadership.

With Zvezda behind 38-52 midway through the third quarter, he scored or assisted on his team's next 8 points to ignite the comeback. Then, his 10th assist sparked a 7-0 start to the fourth quarter capped by his three-pointer for a 59-59 tie.

When he returned from a breather to a slim 65-64 Zvezda advantage and 3:32 to play, Teodosic promptly nailed another triple. He then broke a 68-68 tie by hitting 1 of 2 free throws entering the final minute left and subsequently fed Yago Dos Santos for long three-pointer that sealed the eventual 74-68 victory with 20 seconds left.

In short, Teodosic seemed to will Zvezda to a crucial victory, and his efforts did not go unnoticed by the opposing head coach, Pablo Laso, who has been drawing up plans to thwart Teodosic for many years now.

"For me, Milos is a great player, for sure. Great creator, great passer, great shooter. If you ask Milos, he would probably like to be 25 years old, but he is not. But, when you get old, you get old," Laso said after the game. "Milos means a lot for the club, shows a lot of character and also helps young players to develop. It is a good mirror to have. I have a lot of respect for him as a player. I have a lot of respect that he is still playing at the level he showed tonight."

However, there was to be a final twist as Chima Moneke grabbed an offensive rebound, drew a foul from Ognjen Jaramaz and sank both free throws to give head coach Dusko Ivanovic, back for a fourth stint at Baskonia, a dream start in the latest chapter of his illustrious career.

It was a heartbreaking loss for Partizan, whose 20-year-old power forward Tristan Vukcevic would have grabbed the headlines had the visitors won after positing 13 points in his first EuroLeague appearance of the season, 11 of them in a rip-roaring first half stint.

### The game in a nutshell

The rollercoaster encounter saw Baskonia gain the upper hand in the opening two quarters on the back of 10 offensive rebounds while Partizan managed a grand total of 1, sparking furious reactions from head coach Zeljko Obradovic. The visitors stepped up their defense in the second half and carved out a 58-66 lead late in the third quarter, but they just couldn’t hold on to it.

Markus Howard, who has been struggling with long-range shooting all season, misfired aplenty again but delivered when it mattered as he sank a pair of three-pointers in a tense finish to get his side back into the game. Then, Moneke stepped up to the plate and came up big at crunch time for Baskonia.

“It feels good to help us win this game and I think it’s the start of something good,” Moneke said in a flash post-game interview. “We needed this win; it’s been a tough couple of weeks. Every game is very important and no game is going to be easy.”

Coach Ivanovic added: “I am really happy for my players, first and foremost. We had ups and downs in the game, but the team gave 100 percent and never stopped believing.”

The Montenegrin’s counterpart, Coach Obradovic, was clearly disappointed after Partizan suffered another tough road loss, having also gone down 98-94 in overtime at Olympiacos Piraeus in Round 4.

“In the first half, their offensive rebounds were a big problem, but in the second we were in control,” he commented. “In the end, an offensive rebound decided the outcome. We also made some very poor decisions on offense in the home straight.”

### A night of celebrations

Ivanovic, who had won three league titles with Baskonia during his previous three stints, was all smiles at the press conference.

“Congratulations to the players and the fans,” he said. “We played with a lot of energy and belief.” The win against Partizan will be that much sweeter for the Montenegrin tactician, who was dismissed by the club’s archrival Crvena Zvezda Meridianbet Belgrade only a few days before it suffered a double derby loss in quick succession.

On a night of celebrations at Buesa Arena, Ivanovic’s Baskonia side gave the fans another reason to cheer by recording the team’s first home win in the EuroLeague this season. But, as the 66-year-old stated afterward, it is only one game. Next, Baskonia faces a tricky test on the road at the 3-3 Olympiacos Piraeus.

Virtus Segafredo Bologna notched its fifth consecutive victory as it [fended off Anadolu Efes Istanbul 93-81](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/euroleague/news/euroleague-live-blog-virtus-bologna-vs-anadolu-efes-sk/), thanks in large part to a trio of veterans – Toko Shengelia, Bryant Dunston and Marco Belinelli – who did much of the heavy lifting.

Shengelia showed why he was the Turkish Airlines EuroLeague’s October MVP with another incredible performance, pouring in 19 points, including hitting 9-of-11 free throws, to go with 5 rebounds, 6 assists and 12 fouls drawn for a PIR of 30.

“I feel like the whole team should be standing here with me,” Shengelia said in the post-game flash interview after Virtus improved to 5-1. “We did an amazing job – defensively and offensively. We had our mistakes, but we kept playing, kept playing, kept being consistent. We had the support from the coaches and each other and that’s what we do. Our main thing was to protect our home today. And that’s what we did.”

The win was special for the winning team as it was the first EuroLeague game of the season played at Virtus Segafredo Arena, having played its first three home contests at PalaDozza.

### A special night for Bryant Dunston

Virtus’s Round 6 clash with Efes was a memorable occasion for Dunston, too, as the center was facing his former team for the first time since leaving last summer. During an eight-year spell with Efes, Dunston played a key role in the Turkish side’s back-to-back EuroLeague crowns in the 2020-21 and 2021-22 seasons.

“I really tried to not think about this being my old team and making it a personal thing. Coach \[Luca Banchi\] did a great job telling me to focus on the small things, so I went out there and tried to do those things well to help the team get open shots and extra possessions and play good defense,” said Dunston, who collected 14 points, 6 rebounds, 2 assists and 2 blocks.

The 37-year-old, who had a combined total of 12 points from his first five games, grabbed 4 of Virtus’s 17 offensive rebounds, which was one of the main keys to the game. Virtus also committed just 8 turnovers.

The hosts drained just 7 three-pointers, but one of its main shooters was fellow 37-year-old Marco Belinelli, who hit 3-of-3 from long range and scored 17 points.

Nine of the 11 players who played ended up scoring, while eight players grabbed rebounds and 10 players dished at least 1 assist. That is something Coach Banchi was really proud of.

“We got energy from everybody,” stated the Italian. “I am very proud of how everybody stepped up. We rotated 11 players and everybody gave a great contribution to energize the team. Because if you want to beat a team like Efes you have to play 40 minutes, and that’s what we did tonight.”

One thing’s for sure, it certainly helps when you have veteran leaders like Shengelia, Dunston and Belinelli doing a lot of the heavy lifting.
