In a 95-81, Lessort set new career highs with 23 points and 14 rebounds. He made 8-of-16 two-point shots and 7-of-8 free throws, while pulling down 7 rebounds each on the offensive and defensive ends of the floor. He also delivered 2 blocks and 1 assist for a PIR of 31, the best mark by any winning player in Round 5.

A pair of Turkish Airlines EuroLeague veterans, [Mike James](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/euroleague/players/mike-james/005985/) of AS Monaco and ALBA's [Johannes Thiemann](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/euroleague/players/johannes-thiemann/003958/), each had a PIR of 30. On a night when he became only the fourth, and fastest, player ever to reach 4,000 career points during a [107-79 win](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/euroleague/game-center/2023-24/as-monaco-maccabi-playtika-tel-aviv/E2023/41/#boxscore) over Maccabi Playtika Tel Aviv, James had 24 points, 5 assists, 4 rebounds and 1 steal in just 21 minutes on the floor. Thieman scored 22 points, a personal best in 103 appearances, with 6 rebounds, 2 assists, a steal and 8 fouls drawn.

Fenerbahce Beko Istanbul ground out [a well-deserved 67-76 win at FC Bayern Munich](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/euroleague/news/euroleague-live-blog-fc-bayern-munich-vs-fenerbahce-basketball/) in Round 5 of the Turkish Airlines EuroLeague Regular Season, with the visiting team looking more like the hosts as thousands of “away” fans cheered them on inside BMW Park.

One could easily be forgiven for thinking the game was being played in Istanbul, with the Fenerbahce crowd – by and large Turkish expatriates based in Munich – roaring Dimitris Itoudis’s squad on from the top of their lungs throughout the physical contest.

### Fenerbahce kept Bayern at arm’s length… just

The home fans sporadically cheered on Bayern, notably when the German side was ahead and when it launched several comeback attempts, which ended up falling short against a steely Fenerbahce defense. The 2017 EuroLeague champion led throughout the second half and prevailed on the back of 17 points from the game’s top scorer Scottie Wilbekin, with Marko Guduric adding 14 for the visitors.

Bayern missed a chance to force a dramatic late twist after it slashed the deficit to 66-68 with 90 seconds left in the game, but forward Isaac Bonga then committed a series of errors which vanquished his team’s fightback. Fenerbahce improved to 4-1 while Bayern slipped to 2-3 and Wilbekin was delighted after the outcome.

“It (the grandstand finale) was a bit stressful, but we were able to make our free throws and do the things we needed to do when it counts,” Wilbekin told EuroLeague TV in a flash courtside interview. “We did a better job in the second half on rebounding and I got some open looks off the dribble.”

Coach Itoudis praised his team’s effort, too: “We were scoreless for a long period in the third quarter, but we played well defensively and stopping the productivity of their guards was the key.”

### Bayern’s difficulties

Sylvain Francisco was the only home player in double figures with 11 points, while former Fenerbahce guard Carsen Edwards endured a tough night as he posted just 6 points and Germany’s world champion Andreas Obst netted 9 on 2-of-7 shooting from three-point range. Serge Ibaka also scored 9 points for Bayern, but he was kept under wraps in the closing stages. In particular, Fenerbahce thrived on collecting a staggering 48 rebounds, 17 of them offensive.

“It was another tough road game in the EuroLeague and we controlled most of it,” added Itoudis in the post-game press conference. “We had lapses on the defensive end in the first half, but we came back with a different mindset in the second. We need to congratulate our fans, they made us feel at home. They were amazing like they always are over here, so a big applause for them.”

Bayern boss Pablo Laso had no complaints. “We played very well in the first half, but to win you have to score and we missed open jumpers,” he lamented. “We kept fighting, we were in the game until the end, but we faced a very good team. No complaints to the players, they played hard and we will learn from this defeat. We just didn’t dominate the rhythm of the game.”

Panathinaikos Athens fans came into the 2023-24 Turkish Airlines EuroLeague campaign looking forward to many things, one of which was the big man combination of Mathias Lessort and Dinos Mitoglou.

Although Mitoglou only made his season debut in Round 4, the dynamic duo showed in [Round 5 against Baskonia Vitoria-Gasteiz](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/euroleague/news/euroleague-live-blog-panathinaikos-bc-vs-baskonia-vitoria-gasteiz/) what the Greens’ supporters can expect to see this season.

Lessort collected 23 points, 14 rebounds and 2 blocks, while Mitoglou also tallied 23 points with 3 rebounds and 1 block in Panathinaikos’s 95-81 victory at OAKA on Friday night.

Afterward, both big men were quick to congratulate each other for their respective performances.

“I am very happy for him. He worked really hard at practice and we missed him a lot at the beginning of the season,” Lessort said of Mitoglou. “He’s coming back. He’s not even in shape yet. He helped us a lot in the last two games and I am very happy for him.”

The Greek forward, who had been dealing with a calf injury, also praised Lessort, who came into the game averaging 14.2 points and 6.2 rebounds.

“I want to give credit to Mathias because he played very well tonight,” said Mitoglou, who in Round 4 played his first EuroLeague game since March 2022.

When asked about not yet being in game shape, Mitoglou added: “I’m not 100 percent yet, but I try all the time to give my best to the team. But for sure, the best is still yet to come.”

### Coach Ataman was left impressed

Panathinaikos coach Ergin Ataman was happy with how the duo played, especially in the final 20 minutes.

“In the second half we controlled the game inside, going to Mathias and Dinos. They dominated on the boards,” the coach stated.

Ataman then admitted that Mitoglou’s injury gave the team some problems early on in the season.

“All of our injuries at the beginning of the season started when Mitoglou and \[Ioannis\] Papapetrou got injured,” he added. “Before that we were stable and had team chemistry. But we suffered a lot when Dinos was out.

“Tonight and also against Maccabi, Dinos played very well. He showed his potential. He is a very experienced player.”

If Lessort and Mitoglou can continue to improve their chemistry, this fearsome pair could be a nightmare on a night in, night out basis. The rest of the EuroLeague has been warned.

Virtus Segafredo Bologna stayed in the winning habit with a [very hard-fought 84-87 road victory at LDLC ASVEL Villeurbanne](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/euroleague/news/euroleague-live-blog-ldlc-asvel-vs-virtus-bologna/) on Friday night, and Isaia Cordinier was the main reason why.

The Italian team was heading into the game on a three-game winning run, but knew it would have to survive an early burst of energy in the wake of ASVEL’s decision to name Gianmarco Pozzecco as its new head coach. And Cordinier was certainly ready for that challenge, scoring 7 of his team’s first 9 points – and assisting the other 2 – in the opening 3 minutes to show the hosts that Virtus was ready to give as good as it got.

### A game-winning contribution

The 27-year-old continued to make consistent contributions at both ends of the floor, snatching steals, making shots and dishing dimes. But he saved his most important moment for the very end of the game: with his team leading by just 1 point inside the final 20 seconds, he penetrated with unstoppable determination and, despite being off balance, somehow converted a tough layup to make it 84-87, which proved to be the last points of the game.

That saw Cordinier finish the contest with 20 points on 5-of-6 two-point shooting, 2-of-2 from long range and 4-of-4 from the foul line, along with a couple of assists and a trio of steals for a PIR of 25. In doing so, he set new career bests in scoring and PIR, in addition to equaling his previous highs in two-pointers, three-pointers and steals. 

Speaking to EuroLeague TV after the game, Cordinier preferred to downplay his own contribution and instead highlighted the efforts of his teammates, also underlining Virtus’s sense that nothing has been achieved yet.

“It’s a collective effort first,” he stated. “We fought hard, although it wasn’t perfect. We fought and, in the end, we got the dub on the road.

“We've just got to keep working. We have a lot to improve still, we’re just on our way. Thanks to the coaching staff and my teammates for giving me confidence, I play hard, I give my heart, and we’ve just got to keep going.”

### Virtus’s other heroes on the night

Cordinier was right to talk about the efforts of his teammates, many of whom also made major contributions to the win: Toko Shengelia scored 18 points, Marco Belinelli had 16, Daniel Hackett dished 6 assists, and Jordan Mickey blocked 4 shots. 

But nobody matched the efforts of Cordinier, whose combination of hustle and execution summed up exactly why Virtus is now sitting in a share of second place with a run of four straight wins.

Valencia Basket got back to the winning ways on Friday night, registering its first road win of the season after [blowing past Zalgiris Kaunas at Zalgirio Arena, 72-87](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/euroleague/news/euroleague-live-blog-zalgiris-kaunas-vs-valencia-basket/). 

It was an impressive outing in which Valencia never trailed, built a 22-point halftime lead, was up by as many as 29 points in the third quarter and cruised the rest of the way to improve to 4-1.

"This game was like a little nightmare for us", Zalgiris head coach Kazys Maksvytis stated after the game.

### Valencia turned on the style early on

Valencia was especially impressive in the first half, in which it scored 52 points, tying a club record for points scored in the first 20 minutes. It managed to do so behind some excellent play from Chris Jones, while Turkish Airlines EuroLeague rookies Boubacar Toure and Nate Reuvers both played a big part.

After the break Brandon Davies paced the team to get the margin to 32-61, and when Zalgiris tried to make a run, Jared Harper scored 8 straight points between the third and fourth quarters to restore a 22-point lead. The final margin of 15 points is tied for Valencia's fourth-largest win in a EuroLeague game this century.

### Help on lots of fronts

More proof that Valencia's win was a true team effort is that each of its 12 players scored. The Spanish side made 8 triples but that came from six different players, while it allowed just 6 offensive rebounds on 40 missed field goals by Zalgiris. Meanwhile, the hosts were held to just 7-for-28 from long range.

"I think we are just doing a good job of playing overall together", Harper, who finished with 13 points in 14 minutes, said after this win. "Knowing each other's weaknesses and using each other's strengths and using that to help our team win."

Jones, who paced the team with 16 points, also believes that it is a team effort that has gotten Valencia off to a great start to the season.

"Everybody wants to do the right thing, and I think that is helping us right now," he commented. "As long as we keep that attitude, and work day by day, we will continue to get better."

After just five games, it is way too early in the season to make any predictions, but continuing with such solid performances on both ends of the floor could take Valencia, a club whose only playoff appearance came in 2011, a long way.
