Virtus Segafredo Bologna forward [Achille Polonara](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/euroleague/players/achille-polonara/002084/) will undergo surgery on Tuesday to address a recently discovered testicular tumor, the club announced. His recovery period will be determined after the operation.

Polonara, 32, played as recently as the opening round of the Turkish Airlines EuroLeague season last Thursday, when he was on the floor for 10 minutes as Virtus lost at home to Zalgiris Kaunas. He actually joined Virtus from Zalgiris in the summer. He had played the first half of last season with Anadolu Efes Istanbul before moving to Zalgiris at the start of 2023 and helping the team reach the playoffs.

Polonara debuted in the EuroLeague with Baskonia Vitoria-Gasteiz in 2019 and took the competition by storm in the 2020-21 season, averaging 12.2 points, 6.6 rebounds – [second behind only Walter Tavares of Real Madrid](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/euroleague/stats/expanded/?size=25&viewType=traditional&seasonCode=E2020&statisticMode=perGame&seasonMode=Single&sortDirection=descending&statistic=totalRebounds) – 1.9 assists and 1.2 steals for a 16.5 PIR that ranked 11th among all players. 

His playing time and numbers dropped slightly to 7.3 points, 4.3 rebounds  and 1.1 assists during the 2021-22 season with Fenerbahce Beko Istanbul before he moved to Efes and Zalgiris last season.

Round 1 concluded with four thrillers that lived up to any preseason hype and put a "can't-miss" tag on all EuroLeague action going forward.

A thrilling first Friday proved we can believe the hype

Well, that didn't take long at all, did it? 

With slam-dunk fierceness, the Turkish Airlines EuroLeague first week briskly confirmed all the preceding anticipation and hype. 

Electricity crackled across Europe as almost 100,000 fans packed arenas from Istanbul to Belgrade, Tel Aviv, Munich, Valencia and more.

If opening night on Thursday seemed destined to be dominated by home teams, Zalgiris Kaunas corrected that notion with not one, but two comebacks from 15-point deficits to leave Virtus Segafredo Bologna fans crushed. 

That quickly, we were reminded that anything happen – and usually does – on EuroLeague game nights.

Another Thursday highlight was two-time champ Pablo Laso returning to the bench with FC  Bayern Munich to win the German derby by tying a EuroLeague record for the biggest difference on the boards, out-rebounding ALBA Berlin by 49 to 17!

But if Thursday lit the spark, the first Friday blew the roof off this new season. Total unpredictability, the essence of sports drama, was the order of the evening. Consider that:

• At one point, all four Friday games had second-half scoreboard gaps of 4 or fewer points simultaneously.

• Shots in the air over the fourth-quarter buzzer would have change the winners of three games had they fallen. Alas, all missed.

• Two of those three games went to overtime, the most in an opening round since 2000.

• The fourth game saw a Final Four team from last season suffer the season's first upset.

The first overtime came in Istanbul where former MVP Nikola Mirotic poured in a round-high 27 points for his new team, EA7 Emporio Armani Milan, but couldn't prevent[ Fenerbahce Beko from winning 85-82 in OT](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/euroleague/game-center/2023-24/fenerbahce-beko-istanbul-ea7-emporio-armani-milan/E2023/6/) before its thankful fans. His three-point try to force a second-overtime missed.

The drama reached literary proportions as almost 18,000 Panathinaikos Athens fans held their collective breath for the final shot of regulation time, a potential game-winner from their new hero, Kostas Sloukas, who had the same shot to win the title last spring for their archrival and opponent on Friday, Olympiacos Piraeus. Neither shot fell, however, and in this case [Olympiacos ruled in overtime to win 78-88](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/euroleague/game-center/2023-24/panathinaikos-athens-olympiacos-piraeus/E2023/7/).

The beneficiary of Sloukas's miss last spring, current champion Real Madrid, battled its domestic nemesis Baskonia Vitoria-Gasteiz all night before stealing away with [a two-point road victory, 77-79,](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/euroleague/game-center/2023-24/baskonia-vitoria-gasteiz-real-madrid/E2023/8/) despite missing tower of power Walter Tavares for the opener. Markus Howard's good look on the buzzer did not drop, to the chagrin of 14,000-plus fans in Buesa Arena.

Fans lived every emotion on Friday of Round 1

And before Friday could finish, [Valencia Basket threw its hat in the ring by defeating AS Monaco 70-65](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/euroleague/game-center/2023-24/valencia-basket-as-monaco/E2023/9/) by relying on a cast of newcomers until Chris Jones took over in the fourth quarter to make sure.

Altogether on Friday, there were 29 ties and 40 lead changes over four games spanning less than four hours, and none of the eight teams team all night held more than a 10-point lead during regulation time.

You would say that the fans were on the edge of their seats but, of course, this is the EuroLeague. Most of them were on their feet for most of the night and you could hardly blame them. It was a thrilling start to a season that promises to reach new heights of basketball competitiveness. Believe the hype.

Round 1 concluded with four thrillers that lived up to any preseason hype and put a "can't-miss" tag on all EuroLeague action going forward. 

Olympiacos Piraeus is facing severe injury problems before its Turkish Airlines EuroLeague Regular Season Round 2 showdown against FC Barcelona. Power forward Luke Sikma and swingman Shaquielle McKissic are expected to miss significant playing time while two other players, playmaker Nigel Williams-Goss and center Moustapha Fall, are questionable.

Sikma is out for two weeks due to a left leg injury, a gastrocnemius haematoma. McKissic is set to be sidelined for at least three weeks due to a bone bruise in the femoral condyle with damage to the quadriceps tendon. Both of them would miss three EuroLeague games against Barca, EA7 Emporio Armani Milan and Partizan Mozzart Bet Belgrade. McKissic may miss two more, against Anadolu Efes Istanbul on October 26 and Fenerbahce Beko Istanbul on November 6 (Round 6).

Williams-Goss is questionable due to a muscle spasm, and Moustapha Fall may not play due to a knee injury. Just like McKissic, Sikma and Williams-Goss helped Olympiacos beat Panathinaikos 77-88 in overtime in the Greek derby last week. McKissic got injured in that game while Sikma and Williams-Goss went down in the Reds' Greek League opener against Aris Midea Thessaloniki. Fall already missed that Round 1 showdown and is practicing individually.

A handful of Turkish Airlines EuroLeague debutants proved to be difference makers in Round 1 last week. Not all players are ready to shine in their first chance under the bright lights in Europe's premier competition, but the guys below certainly were. He played more minutes (43:12) than any other player in Round 1 and was one of seven players to start the season with a double-double. His PIR of 25 tied for fifth best in the league.

Though he did not start the game, [Francisco](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/euroleague/players/sylvain-francisco/007975/) came off the bench to light up ALBA Berlin for 10 first-quarter points. He later accounted for 5 points and an assist in a 13-6 run to open the fourth quarter that put the game on ice. Francisco was Bayern's top scorer for the night.

### Damien Inglis, Valencia Basket

[Inglis ](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/euroleague/players/damien-inglis/003960/)quietly put together a strong effort to help Valencia take down AS Monaco, which reached the Final Four just last season. He contributed everywhere as the team’s third-best scorer and second-best rebounder. Inglis, 28, also posted 1 assist, 1 steal and 1 block.

The hosts outscored Efes 14-6 in that stretch.

He went on to tally 10 points in the first 8 minutes of the game. The 23-year-old big man did not miss a shot all night and might have done more had he not been plagued by foul trouble.

In a modern EuroLeague classic, Efes (0-1) will look to bounce back from last week's loss in Barcelona when it hosts a Real (1-0) team eager to add to its hard-earned win at Baskonia. It's a high-profile home EuroLeague debut for Efes boss Erdem Can, who will hope to see more versatility from an offense which relied too heavily on [Shane Larkin](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/euroleague/players/shane-larkin/007200/) (16 points, 12 assists) last week. Relief for ALBA after they finished 2022 on a high and snapped a troubling twelve-game losing run via a win over ASVEL. They host co-leaders Baskonia, who have sights on a seventh successive victory and boast Markus Howard leading the three-point scoring charts.

It was a special week for basketball lovers all over the world with the new 2023-24 Turkish Airlines EuroLeague season tipping off, and fans answered the call, packing out arenas across the continent.

Fans pack arenas as the EuroLeague returns

The stands were full for each of the nine Round 1 games played in the Turkish Airlines EuroLeague on Thursday and Friday nights. Fans across the continent answered the call: from Stark Arena to Palau Blaugrana and PalaDozza, from Buesa Arena and La Fonteta to OAKA Altion and Menora Mivtachim Arena, the stands were packed and atmospheres were electric, making for some memorable moments in the very first week of the new season.

Things got going at Stark Arena in Belgrade, which was once again full to the brim. However, this time it was for Crvena Zvezda Meridianbet Belgrade, which was the home team at this venue for the first time in almost two years and its fans certainly set the tone in style.

Crvena Zvezda found a way to make its home-opener even more of an occasion. Ahead of tipoff against the visiting LDLC ASVEL Villeurbanne, the fans in the arena – and those watching at home – were treated to a special pre-game show.

The center of it all was an interactive player introduction that featured special effects and full-court mapping projection. Zvezda’s passionate fans helped their team get off to a winning start, just like the fans in Tel Aviv helped Maccabi Playtika Tel Aviv protect its home floor against Partizan Mozzart Bet Belgrade. Maccabi, which [sold out all of its season tickets back in July](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/euroleague/news/maccabi-announces-2023-24-season-ticket-sellout/), had a packed house for its season opener, creating an atmosphere that helped Maccabi win the 24th game of its last 26 EuroLeague regular-season home fixtures.

The largest attendance in Round 1 came at Stark Arena, but not far behind was the Greek derby at OAKA Altion, where the Greens’ fans came out in huge numbers to witness their new-look side take on archrival Olympiacos Piraeus.

Fenerbahce Beko Istanbul’s fans did not disappoint for their team’s season opener either, which was also a special occasion as recently retired former champion Luigi Datome returned to Istanbul with EA7 Emporio Armani Milan, where he is now part of the staff. Fenerbahce’s fans got a chance to give Datome one final warm welcome on Friday. He finished his professional career last season with Milan but spent five memorable seasons with Fenerbahce, during which he helped the team win the 2017 EuroLeague crown and reach three more Final Fours.

Also on Friday, Baskonia Vitoria-Gasteiz’s faithful filled out Buesa Arena for the arrival of Spanish League rival and reigning EuroLeague champion, Real Madrid. So did Valencia's fans at La Fonteta as Mike James and AS Monaco came to town.

There can usually be only one MVP, but in each round of the Turkish Airlines EuroLeague many players stand out whether or not their teams win. Here are some players who really impressed in Round 1.

### Bayern's Bonga kept rolling in Round 1

[Isaac Bonga](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/euroleague/players/isaac-bonga/006760/) is going through some of the best moments in his basketball career. A World Cup champion with Germany barely a month ago, Bonga backed that up with a strong as FC Bayern Munich took a 80-68 victory over ALBA Berlin in their season-opening German Derby. Bonga finished with a double-double of 11 points and a game-high 10 rebounds, adding an assist, a steal and 2 fouls drawn for a PIR of 17 in almost 26 minutes. His new head coach, Pablo Laso, played Bonga at small forward, with plenty of freedom to have the ball in his hands. Bonga, still just 23 years old, is playing like a young veteran ready for bigger challenges.

### Cordinier shined despite Virtus loss

Although Virtus Segafredo Bologna suffered a heart-breaking 79-82 home loss to Zalgiris Kaunas, the good news was that [Isaia Cordinier](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/euroleague/players/isaia-cordinier/009549/) proved he can play a leading role this season. Cordinier helped Virtus with 12 points on 4-of-5 two-point shooting and career highs of 9 assists and a 22 PIR. He showed great aggresiveness at all times, attacking the rim every time he had the opportunity. His dunk off a hard-fought offensive rebound ignited the crowd, giving Virtus a 65-56 lead late in the third quarter. Cordinier's overall energy, athleticism and all-around game should be critical for Virtus going forward.

### Laprovittola's all-round game

FC Barcelona had a great start to the season with a 91-74 win over the visiting Anadolu Efes Istanbul. While Barcelona dominated inside all night, playmaker [Nicolas Laprovittola](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/euroleague/players/nicolas-laprovittola/006435/) was doing damage on the perimeter. Laprovittola posted 13 points while delivering 8 assists and pulling down 5 rebounds. He also had some timely baskets when Efes was still a threat, delivering most of his production in the first 25 minutes to keep Barcelona ahead and in control of the game.

### Moneke impressed on Baskonia debut

One of the main additions to Baskonia Vitoria-Gasteiz's roster over the summer was [Chima Moneke](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/euroleague/players/chima-moneke/012201/), who shined in Friday night's narrow 77-79 defeat to Real Madrid. In 23:36 minutes on the court, the 27-year-old had a 13-point, 10-rebound double-double, the second of his 17-game EuroLeague career. Curiously, Moneke's other double-double came on the road at Baskonia last season, when he posted 14 points and 13 rebounds while playing for AS Monaco. There must be something about Buesa Arena that he enjoys.

### Jones came up clutch for Valencia

Entering the fourth quarter of Valencia Basket's clash with Monaco, [Chris Jones](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/euroleague/players/chris-jones/010568/) had just 5 points to his name. Admittedly, Valencia did have a slender 53-51 lead, but it was Jones that spurred his side on to a 70-65 victory in the last 10 minutes. After having a more peripheral role through the first 30 minutes, the second-year guard went on to score 9 points in the last quarter. Most importantly, Jones scored a three-pointer with one minute to go that saw him to reach 14 points in the game and gave Valencia a crucial 66-63 lead, an advantage the hosts never lost.
