Real is the winningest team in EuroLeague history with 10 continental crowns. Only three of them came in the Final Four era. After the format was adopted in 1988, Real only made it to three of the first 23 Final Fours. Things changed in the early 2010s when a golden generation of domestic players led by Rudy Fernandez, Sergio Llull, Sergio Rodriguez and Felipe Reyes joined forces with head coach Pablo Laso to restore Real to its place at among the top clubs on the continent. Real won EuroLeague titles in 2015 and 2018 and reached three more championship games. Chus Mateo, a two-time champion as Laso's assistant, now hopes to add to the club's legacy.

### Journey to the Final Four

Real was third in the regular season standings with a 23-11 record after winning 13 of its 17 home games. A road loss against Maccabi Playtika Tel Aviv in the teams' [regular-season finale, 100-96](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/euroleague/game-center/2022-23/maccabi-playtika-tel-aviv-real-madrid/E2022/301/), prevented Real from finishing second due to its tie-break disadvantage with Barca. Real, however, would have the home-court advantage in its best-of-five series against Partizan.

The series between Real and Partizan became an instant classic. [Partizan upset Real in Game 1 87-89](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/euroleague/game-center/2022-23/real-madrid-partizan-mozzart-bet-belgrade/E2022/309/) on a game-winning shot by Kevin Punter, who buried a contested three-pointer with 0.4 seconds left to fix the final score. Punter led all scorers with 26 points. Gabriel Deck led Real with 24 points. Real center Walter Tavares missed Game 2 due to injury and Partizan took full advantage of it for [an 80-95 road victory](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/euroleague/game-center/2022-23/real-madrid-partizan-mozzart-bet-belgrade/E2022/313/). The game ended prematurely, with 1:40 minutes left on the clock after a brawl erupted on the court. The game could not continue as the ejections of players who took part in the chaos meant neither team had the required number of players to carry on.

Players on both teams were suspended and Tavares returned for the games at Stark Arena, where he earned MVP of the Round honors in Games 3 and 4. He led Real to [an 80-82 win](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/euroleague/game-center/2022-23/partizan-mozzart-bet-belgrade-real-madrid/E2022/317/) with 26 points and 11 rebounds for a PIR of 41. With the game tied at 77-77, Nigel Williams-Goss buried a critical three-pointer and Mario Hezonja put the victory on ice from the foul line. If Real's comeback was the theme of the series, so too was it in Game 5 as Los Blancos erased an 18-point deficit early in the second half to storm back and beat Partizan [98-94](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/euroleague/game-center/2022-23/real-madrid-partizan-mozzart-bet-belgrade/E2022/325/) in a game that will go down in basketball history as a classic. It marked the first time ever that a team rallied from a 0-2 deficit to win a best-of-five series. Sergio Rodriguez scored 11 of his 19 points in the fourth quarter and Dzanan Musa led Real with 20 to lead the victory.

### Final Four experience

It is safe to say that no team has more experience on the court than *Los Blancos*. Sergio Llull is headed to his ninth Final Four, which is tied for second place all-time. He is the all-time Final Four leader in assists (62) and ranks third in scoring (191). Rudy Fernandez and Sergio Rodriguez each have qualified for their eighth Final Four. Fernandez and Llull have only been there with Real. Rodriguez has taken three different teams to the Final Four: Real, CSKA Moscow and EA7 Emporio Armani Milan.

Anthony Randolph has made it to the Final Four for the sixth time. Fabien Causeur is in his fifth Final Four and Adam Hanga and Tavares have each reached the event for the fourth time. Alberto Abalde and Vincent Poirier were at the Final Four last season, just like Nigel Williams-Goss, who only played 53 seconds due to injury. Mario Hezonja had a brief Final Four experience, taking part in the 2014 third place game with Barca. Twelve different Real players have been to at least one EuroLeague Championship Game.

### Final Four history

Real won seven EuroLeague tiles before the Final Four began: four in the 1960s, two in the 1970s and one in 1981. Once Arvydas Sabonis joined the team, Real reached the Final Four in 1993 and lifted the trophy, coached by Zeljko Obradovic, in 1995. Sabonis left but Real returned to the Final Four in 1996. After a 15-year absence, *Los Blancos* were back at the Final Four in 2011, where they lost against Maccabi in the semifinals. Coach Laso joined the following season and a new era began.

Real reached three consecutive championship games from 2013 to 2015, losing against Olympiacos Piraeus and Maccabi before lifting the trophy in its third attempt, in the Spanish capital. Andres Nocioni earned 2015 Final Four MVP honors. Real remained highly competitive and another title, the club's 10th, arrived in 2018. Luka Doncic was chosen as the 2018 Final Four MVP. Last season, Real returned to the Championship Game and lost against Anadolu Efes Istanbul.

 Monaco makes history with Final Four spot! 

The meteoric rise of AS Monaco reached new heights on Thursday when the club clinched a spot at the 2023 Turkish Airlines EuroLeague Final Four. Coach Sasa Obradovic's squad won Game 5 to take the best-of-five playoff series against Maccabi Playtika Tel Aviv on its home floor.

The victory meant that Monaco will play in European basketball’s pinnacle event in just its second season in the competition. Monaco hadn't even played in the EuroCup before 2018. It won that competition in its third season in the EuroCup and now could be two wins away from rocking the basketball world with the continental crown. When Monaco lands in Kaunas, Lithuania, for this season’s Final Four, it will face top-seed Olympiacos Piraeus in the semifinals.

### Journey to the Final Four

Monaco was in the playoff hunt all season after winning five of its first six games, including triumphs over outgoing champion [Anadolu Efes Istanbul](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/euroleague/game-center/2022-23/as-monaco-anadolu-efes-istanbul/E2022/10/) and [Olympiacos](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/euroleague/game-center/2022-23/olympiacos-piraeus-as-monaco/E2022/40/). The club lost back-to-back games only twice all season. The second time was in the final two games of the regular season after Monaco had clinched a playoff berth. It finished the regular season in fourth place with a 21-13 record.

Then Monaco stumbled out of the gate in the playoffs, [losing the series opener to Maccabi 67-79](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/euroleague/game-center/2022-23/as-monaco-maccabi-playtika-tel-aviv/E2022/308/) and with it the home-court advantage. It bounced back [to take the second game 86-74](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/euroleague/game-center/2022-23/as-monaco-maccabi-playtika-tel-aviv/E2022/312/) led by Jordan Loyd, who posted 33 points.

Monaco never trailed in that game, riding Mike James's 18 first-half points to take control and then holding off all of Maccabi's comeback attempts in the second half. ### Kaunas connection

Center Donatas Motiejunas will surely have a special cheering section in Kaunas. A native of the city, he came through the youth ranks with Zalgiris and made his professional debut there before spending time in Italy, Poland, the NBA and China. This is Motiejunas's second season with Monaco.

"Sometimes, sport doesn't have a logical explanation. Sometimes the heart makes what looks impossible just look a little more difficult. Today, we were able to come back to a game which looked very complicated. But each day, our players give us lessons. We have to learn from these things because even when there are moments in which, in this series, we were not proud of what happened in Game 2, we have to understand that sport also has this face: fighting until the end, being able to turn things around when the game looked complicated, and the series looked complicated. We were down by 15 in the first quarter of Game 3, and were able to come back. We played with a lot of maturity in Belgrade, rallying from a 0-2 deficit. We had faith and confidence but a lot of people thought that we were dead. The only thing missing were the final nails in the coffin. And we were able to come out of a tough situation.

"Sometimes you only need to tell Real Madrid that things are tough to activate it more. We saw it today in some situations in which people thought we were in the coffin, but we were breathing. We breathed after being 1-2, after being 2-2, and knew we had to take this opportunity. It was very difficult for many reasons, and I am not want to put any excuses, it was what it was. It was our chance, the stats were against us and some players out, which made some doubt about what we were able to do. Again, these players gave us a lesson of courage and fight of how to overcome adversity and how to come back from a 0-2 with two wins in Belgrade and winning Game 5 here, making history.

"I think we have to be very proud of this team and how it fought. For us, making it to the Final Four under such circumstances, after such a hard playoff series, is like winning a final. We won't stop here because we are two wins away from winning the EuroLeague, and we know it. We will fight to win the EuroLeague. We will get it or not, but what I can guarantee is that we will leave our souls on the court to get it, like we always do. We can win or lose, but the effort and leaving it all on the court is not negotiable and players know it. They gave a lesson of how to return to the game, and I am absolutely proud of what my players did tonight. These are the nice things that sports have. 

"In this same series, we saw both sides, and I wish \[the brawl\] never happened. Without a doubt, it was not pretty but this was very beautiful, a gift to our fans and a lot of people, seeing how to fight to come back from a 0-2. That's for them. I also want to thank my assistants, who are right here. They went through a hard time, like everybody else. They worked non-stop to make an effort from the tactic point of view, and I wanted to thank them, too."

We played very bad defense and also in the first half, maybe we made some decisions that were not very good. I saw that the team is mentally sunk in the locker room but like I said, I am very proud of everything Partizan did this year."

AS Monaco will make a Final Four debut in just its second EuroLeague season after outlasting Maccabi Playtika Tel Aviv 97-86 in Game 5 to win their back-and-forth series 3-2. Monaco advances to meet Olympiacos Piraeus in the semifinals on Friday, May 19 in Kaunas. Alpha Diallo detonated a dunk early in the fourth to make it 74-71 but Josh Nebo hit 2 free throws and Wade Baldwin exploded a dunk as Maccabi suddenly went ahead, 74-75. Bonzie Colson put back a miss but Chima Moneke detonated a dunk and Donta Hall kept Monaco close until Jordan Loyd could take it back with free throws, 80-79. Loyd drilled a triple with the next shot and again was fouled shooting a triple, with those free throws making it 86-79 with 3 minutes left. Wade Baldwin cut it to 90-85 from the arc with 2 minutes left, but Elie Okobo answered with a lane jumper and free throws to seal the victory. Mike James and Jordan Loyd led the winners with 21 points each while Baldwin led Maccabi with 26 points.

In a Game 5 that will go down in basketball history, Real Madrid rallied from 18 points behind in the second half to win 98-94 and take the last train to the Final Four in Kaunas with a 3-2 series victory over Partizan Mozzart Bet Belgrade. Real will face its archrival, FC Barcelona, in the semifinals on Friday, March 19. Alen Smailagic lifted the Partizan lead to 71-78 early in the fourth, but 5 points in a row by Sergio Rodriguez cut it to 76-81 and Mario Hezonja added a triple to make it 79-81. A second chance reverse by Rodriguez tied it up 81-81 with 6:16 left, completing a comeback from 18 down just 11 minutes earlier. Yam Madar fed Mathias Lessort for a dunk but Roriguez answered and assisted Sergio Llull a go-ahead triple and breakaway layup to suddenly make it 88-83. Kevin Punter banked in a triple that Hezonja matched at 91-86. Madar and Tavares split free throws before Sergio Llull drilled a "mandarina" at 95-87 with 2:50 to play. Rodriguez hit a layup but Dante Exum got 3 points back to make it 97-91 entering the final minute. Zach LeDay drilled a triple with 47.9 seconds left at 97-94 and Partizan got the ball back soon after. Punter missed form deep with 24 seconds left and Hezonja rebounded, but split his free throws at 98-94. Olympiacos beat visiting Fenerbahce 84-72 in Game 5 to clinch the series 3-2 and reach the Final Four in Kaunas, where the Greek side will play with the winner of the Monaco vs. Maccabi series, to  be decided on Wednesday night.<br>
Kostas Sloukas paced Olympiakos with 22 points, Sasha Vezenkov added 17 and Kostas Papanikolaou chipped in with 14, cancelling out a brave solo effort from Fenerbahce's Marko Guduric, who led all scorers with 26 points and tied Alexey Shved's EuroLeague playoff record for three-pointers made with 8 in 12 attempts. Olympiacos made a bright start and carved out a 13-4 lead early on. After Fenerbahce hit back to nose ahead 29-31, the hosts engineered a 15-0 run, the biggest in EuroLeague Game 5 history, to take the game by the scruff of the neck. From there, it never looked back. Fenerbahce tried as hard as it could to stay in touch, but the visitors could not contain Sloukas, who capped a fine personal series against Fenerbahce with a magnificent Game 5.

At the conclusion of a series of momentum swings that hasn't seen either win two games consecutivelt,  Olympiacos look to make home-court advantage count against Fenerbahçe, who've excelled on defense by holding the usually prolific Reds to less than 80 points in every game thus far.

The American, who came into Game 5 in second place all-time with 56 consecutive made free throws, overtook Igor Rakocevic, who hit 58 without missing during the 2007-08 and 2008-09 seasons with Cazoo Baskonia Vitoria-Gasteiz. He tied the record with 2 free throws late in the first quarter and went ahead with a free throw with 8:24 left in the second quarter.

Punter did not play in Games 3 or 4 due to suspension, but he reached that mark of 56 with a 2-for-2 trip to the charity stripe in Partizan's 80-95 win at Real in Game 2, which pushed him above Marius Grigonis (2018-19) and Kyle Kuric (2020-21), who saw 55 straight free throws drop while playing for Zalgiris Kaunas and FC Barcelona, respectively. The Partizan team captain made all 9 of his free throws in Game 1 against Real before adding 2 in Game 2 and 5 in Game 5.

Ballots cast by fans, coaches, team captains and members of the media will each count for 25% of the totals used to determine the All-EuroLeague selections.

When the final votes are tallied, the top vote-getter will be chosen as the 2022-23 EuroLeague MVP, the top five will be named to the All-EuroLeague First Team, and the next five to the All-EuroLeague Second Team.
