For a long time, Filip Petrusev has been regarded as one of the hottest rising talents in European basketball – and now we are seeing why.
Petrusev produced another fabulous effort for Zvezda

After growing up with Partizan Belgrade in his native Serbia, at the age of 14 he moved to Spain to join Baskonia Vitoria-Gasteiz, before heading to the United States for a couple of years in college and then returning to his home country with Mega Belgrade – where he absolutely exploded with a stellar campaign, which ended with the 2020-21 ABA League MVP award after leading the league in scoring with 23.5 points per game.

That led EuroLeague champion Anadolu Efes to bring Petrusev to Istanbul, where the 21-year-old’s career was expected to continue skyrocketing. But it didn’t happen. For various reasons, Petrusev never had the chance to shine with Efes, as he managed modest averages of 5.2 points and 1.6 rebounds per game, with an average of just 9:18 playing time.
After that one disappointing season in Turkey, Petrusev returned to Belgrade in the summer, this time joining Crvena Zvezda, intent on showing the world that he was worthy of his younger hype. And after a slow start, now he’s doing just that.
The forward has benefitted from the arrival of coach Dusko Ivanovic to become a key player, spending more than 20 minutes on the floor in each of the last four games. Last week against Milan he bagged a double-double with a career-high 20 points and 11 rebounds, and in Thursday’s stunning victory at Olympiacos, he was everywhere: Petrusev made 5 of his 6 field goal attempts, plus both his free throw attempts to finish with 14 points, and grabbed 3 rebounds, dished an assist, made a steal and blocked no less than 4 shots.
The last few weeks are suggesting that Petrusev is ready to morph from promising youngster to proven talent, and if he continues to deliver all-around performances like the one we saw in Greece on Thursday, Zvezda should be able to snap its playoff drought.
