Walkup, Olympiacos: 'We played amazing, beautiful basketball tonight'

Georgios Bartzokas, Olympiacos Piraeus coach
“When you have a really good team, you don’t depend on anybody, even if it’s a fantastic player like Sasha Vezenkov. We depend on our team effort, how we play together, how we stick together, how we share the ball, how we play one for the other. I’m really happy about this performance, even if it was just a win on the road in the EuroLeague. But against Panathinaikos, it’s always something more.
“It was a very good night for us. Winning over here [at OAKA Altion] is always important, more than just a win. We were dedicated to our game plan. We played team basketball: giving 28 assists compared to 10 from Panathinaikos shows the way that we tried to play against a team that has offensive talent. We controlled the pace of the game, sharing the ball and finding open shots, and even though our three-point shooting percentage wasn’t really high in the first half, we were winning by 17. And later when we found some open looks for threes, we ended the game really early. Congratulations to the players, and Happy New Year to everybody, especially Olympiacos fans.”
Dejan Radonjic, Panathinaikos Athens coach
“It was a very bad game for us, all 40 minutes.
“I apologize to the fans for this game. I apologize to the 20,000 people in the gym who came to support us. Except for a few minutes at the beginning, everything else was very bad. They took a big advantage after 20 minutes and controlled the game after that. It is very tough to understand [why] we didn’t fight. We need to analyze this game, talk about this. [It's] very strange. How is it possible to play almost 30 minutes with zero fouls? After 10 minutes, it was a terrible game defensively. First of all, we need to analyze this, but it’s unacceptable to play against Olympiacos without fighting. We need to analyze and discuss this. We need to analyze all the aspects. To go out and play in front of 20,000 people, it’s a good opportunity to give your heart, to give everything.”

“I feel pretty good, especially because it’s the end of the year and it’s always good to finish like this with a derby. We know it’s important for the fans to win this game and we’re really happy about it. (On Vezenkov being absent:) Injury is part of the game. Everybody on this team is a really high-level player. A lot of teams have injuries during the season. It’s next man up. We’ve got to step up, and we did it.”
Thomas Walkup, Olympiacos Piraeus guard
“We feel great, especially with Sasha [Vezenkov] being out. He’s breaking records, which shows how good he’s been all year. But it proves to ourselves that we can play as a team, and we did that tonight. A casual basketball fan would say we played amazing, beautiful basketball tonight… the way we shared the ball, passed, moved, worked together. I’m most proud for that, and Coach [Bartzokas] should be, too. The whole squad should be. It changes the run we were on. We were playing so great, but then skidded twice in a row. But now there’s not another game for a week, so it’s nice to go into a long week with a W. We’re excited about that.”
