With the passing of Xabier Añua on July 4th at the age of 89, Spanish basketball lost one of its most influential and respected figures.
Beyond his distinguished career as head coach of clubs such as Baskonia and FC Barcelona, Xabier Añua was a mentor, teacher, and discoverer of talent, who guided countless players and coaches who would go on to shape the future of the sport in Spain.
His intelligence, charisma, courage, integrity, and above all, his extraordinary kindness, are part of the legacy he leaves behind. Perhaps the most enduring aspect of his heritage is the way he made the world a better place for those around him – on and off the court.
One example of the deep admiration he inspired is the unanimous decision by the City Council of Vitoria-Gasteiz to honor both Xabier and his brother Iñaki Añua the – renowned director of the Vitoria Jazz Festival for four decades – by renaming the historic Mendizorroza Sports Center, the former home of Baskonia before its move to the Buesa Arena and current venue of the world-renowned Vitoria Jazz Festival, to include their names.
This article by one of the preeminent experts on Basque basketball, Natxo Mendaza, was originally published in 2019 ahead of the Final Four in Vitoria-Gasteiz and now serves as a heartfelt tribute to the enduring legacy of Xabier Añua.
