Olympiacos thrashes Fenerbahce in Istanbul, 73-93

Olympiacos Piraeus remained atop the Turkish Airlines EuroLeague Regular Season standings by downing Fenerbahce Beko Istanbul 73-93 at Ulker Sport and Event Hall in Round 22 on Tuesday. Olympiacos improved to 15-7 in the standings and has 2-0 regular season record against Fenerbahce, which dropped to 13-9. Olympiacos led 10-24 after 10 minutes, boosted its margin to 16-46 at halftime and kept a safe margin until the final buzzer.
Kostas Papanikolaou paced the winners with 21 points, missing just 1 free throw attempt. Isaiah Canaan added 20 while Thomas Walkup, Shaquielle McKissic and Sasha Vezenkov each had 12 and Giannoulis Larentzakis 11 for Olympiacos. Vezenkov added 11 rebounds for a double-double. Marko Guduric led Fenerbahce with 24 points. Melih Mahmutoglu added 14 while Devin Booker and Kostas Antetokounmpo each had 10 for the hosts.

Papanikolaou and Canaan each struck from downtown in an 0-8 run that Vezenkov capped with a layup to open the game. Booker and Antetokounmpo stepped up for Fenerbahce but Olympiacos kept making it rain from beyond the arc. Canaan, Vezenkov and Papanikolaou helped the Reds boost their margin to 10-24 after 10 minutes. McKissic dunked and Joel Bolomboy's alley-oop layup made it an 18-point game, 13-31. Papanikolaou and an unstoppable Larentzakis allowed Olympiacos to break the game open, 16-46. Antetokoumpo and Guduric brought Fenerbahce closer, 31-50, at halftime.
Guduric opened the third quarter with a three-point play but he didn't find much help. Meanwhile, Canaan struck twice from downtown, getting help from Vezenkov and Papanikolaou to restore a 41-68 Olympiacos margin. Nothing changed after that, as an unstoppable Canaan led Olympiacos to a 51-77 margin after 30 minutes. Fenerbahce used a 12-0 run which Mahmutoglu capped with back-to-back triples to force the Reds to call timeout, 66-79, with under 6 minutes left. But it was too little, too late, and the Reds took the win back to Piraeus.
