Paris holds off champs, 84-80, for maiden victory

Paris Basketball held off a late charge from reigning Turkish Airlines EuroLeague champion Panathinaikos AKTOR Athens to claim its first-ever win in the competition, 84-80, at Accor Arena on Tuesday night. While Paris improved to 1-2 on the season, the Greens fell to 2-1.
Nadir Hifi paced the winners with 20 points. T.J. Shorts tallied 16 points and 7 assists and Collin Malcolm contributed 14 points for Paris. French national team player Mathias Lessort led Panathinaikos with 19 points and 11 rebounds, Kendrick Nunn posted 16 points and 8 rebounds and Lorenzo Brown scored 14 off the bench.
Marius Grigonis opened the scoring from deep for the champs before Kevarrius Hayes got Paris on the board. Lessort looked to make a mark with a basket inside and a block at the other end. With the score even, 7-7, both teams got a little sloppy with a series on turnover. Malcolm drained a go-ahead three for Paris before Hifi scored twice to make it 14-9. Brown came off the bench to calm the visitors with a three only to see Hifi delight the fans with another bucket. Brown sank a pull-up jumper to end the first quarter with the hosts ahead 21-19.
Pristine Paris execution combined with poor Panathinaikos shooting as the hosts stretched the lead to 29-21 early in the second quarter. Mikael Jantunen scored twice inside and Paris was just getting going. Malcolm nailed another three and Shorts buried a pull-up jumper for the game’s first double-digit lead, 36-25. After a Panathinaikos timeout, Malcolm tripled once more and Hifi’s next three made it 42-27. Lessort helped the Greens trim the deficit to within 7 and Nunn’s jumper, with his first basket of the game, established the halftime line at 45-39.
