Hapoel knocks off Bahcesehir, 84-77! 

Hapoel Shlomo Tel Aviv sent a message that echoed all around the competition by beating Bahcesehir College Istanbul 84-77 in Samokov, Bulgaria, in Round 16 on Wednesday. Hapoel improved to 10-6 in Group A while Bahcesehir dropped to 13-3, as it saw its four-game winning streak come to an end. Both teams had already qualified to the playoffs before this game.

Johnathan Motley led the winners with 19 points and 7 assists. Marcus Foster added 17 points, Yam Madar scored 16 and Tomer Ginat tallied 13 points and 7 rebounds for Hapoel. Furkan Korkmaz and Jaleen Smith paced Bahcesehir with 13 points apiece. Smith also delivered 7 assists. Furkan Haltali added 12, Kenan Sipahi 11 and Tai Odiase 10 for the visitors.

Patrick Beverley got Hapoel going with a three-pointer. Smith answered with a jumper before he fed Tyler Cavanaugh for a triple and a 3-5 Bahcesehir lead. Ginat scored down low before Odiase and Motley traded dunks for a 7-7 tie. Smith bettered Motley's jumper with a bomb from downtown for a 9-10 score. Motley kept pacing Hapoel with a jumper and a layup, then Ginat struck from beyond the arc to boost the hosts' lead to 16-12. Foster followed a driving layup with a baseline jumper, but Sipahi and Sehmus Hazer each scored in penetration to bring Bahcesehir within 20-17 after 10 minutes.

Bruno Caboblo buried a corner triple early in the second quarter. Korkmaz found his first points and Haltali dunked, getting help from Smith and Hazer to tie it at 24-24. Smith hit a mid-range jumper to complete Bahcesehir's comeback, 25-26. Motley tried to change things with a layup that Korkmaz bettered with a bomb from downtown. Ish Wainright answered from beyond the arc and Yam Madar added foul shots, but Odiase kept Bahcesehir in charge, 32-33. Marko Simonovic dunked off a steal, then Foster matched that with a layup. Madar and Wainright put Hapoel back ahead, 38-35, at halftime.

Game News

Cavanaugh and Motley exchanged free throws soon after the break and Madar struck from downtown, which prompted Bahcesehir to call a timeout at 43-37. Madar insisted from three-point range to cap an 8-0 run. Haltali stepped up for the visitors with consecutive layups. Cavanaugh and a red-hot Madar traded three-pointers before Foster buried a jumper that gave Hapoel a 53-44 lead. Haltali scored again and Sipahi erased Foster's high-arcing floater with a jumper that made it 55-48. Ginat took over with a put-back layup that Sipahi matched with a jumper. Motley dunked and Haltali's layup fixed the score at 60-53 after 30 minutes.

Ginat scored around the basket but Korkmaz did better with a three-pointer in transition. Foster stepped up with a dunk and Beverley bettered Haltali's slam with a bomb from downtown for a 67-58 Hapoel lead. After Korkmaz insisted from beyond the arc, Motley found Foster for a baseline slam before scoring around the basket. After Korkmaz and Madar traded layups, Ginat made it 75-63. Hazer and Sipahi each struck from downtown to give Bahcesehir hope at 77-69, with 4 minutes left. Foster joined the three-point shootout and Ginat added a reverse layup that sealed the outcome, 82-71, as Bahcesehir did not recover.

Wolves Twinsbet Vilnius picked up a crucial victory in its fight for the playoffs by fighting off Dreamland Gran Canaria 88-76 to snap a two-game losing streak. Wolves bent but did not break, seeing the guests wipe away a 14-point deficit, but the Lithuanian side never trailed and finished the game off for good with a 12-2 late run. Wolves improved to 8-8 after losing five of its last seven games. Gran Canaria fell to 10-6 after its fourth loss in the last five games.

Marek Blazevic scored a career-high 27 points and Andrew Andrews had 25 points to make up for the team’s leading scorer Anthony Cowan scoring just 7 points, though he did dish out 10 assists. Pierre Pelos had 22 points and Caleb Homesley added 20 points for Gran Canaria, which lost Mike Tobey and Carlos Alocen to injuries in the game.

Gran Canaria head coach Jaka Lakovic was forced to change his rotation already in the first minute as both Tobey and Joe Thomasson limped off the court just 58 seconds into the game with lower leg issues. The hosts went ahead 9-0 while Gran Canaria missed its first six shots before finally scoring after almost 5 minutes. Wolves twice pushed the lead to 11 points at 18-7, and it was 22-12 before Homesley had a three-point play and triple to make it 22-18 after 10 minutes.

Massamba Diop came on and trimmed the gap to 22-20 to start the second quarter. Then Andrews started taking over with 12 points as the hosts led 34-24. During that stretch, Gran Canaria had another injury woe as Alocen went down with a right knee injury – though Thomasson did come back on for Alocen. Andrews buried his third triple and Blazevic pushed the gap to 11 points, 39-28. The score was 42-33 at halftime. 

Early in the second half, Wolves got a four-point play from Matas Jogela and the cushion grew to 14 points at 48-34. Blazevic continued his great game with three baskets as it was still 52-38. Gran Canaria responded with the next six points, but Wolves kept scoring and the advantage fluctuated between eight and 12 points until Mehdy Ngouama’s three-pointer to make it 60-55. It was 62-55 after 30 minutes.

Pelos had a strong start to the fourth quarter with seven points and Gran Canaria knotted the game 64-64. Cowan made a free throw for his first point of the night at the 7:33 minute mark, and he added a steal and layup less than a minute later to make it 69-64. The Spanish side evened the game at 69-69 and 71-71 before Wolves blew the game open with a 12-2 run to lead 83-73 with 98 seconds left.

This partnership uses the power of basketball to support social and emotional development for children, helping them develop essential life skills in an inclusive and supportive environment. The program addresses the challenges of social withdrawal, especially among disadvantaged youth, by fostering a sense of community, belonging, and trust. 

The program is designed to be inclusive, offering equal opportunities for both boys and girls to participate in activities that build confidence, improve communication, and develop teamwork. Each session will be accompanied by Besiktas first-team players to serve as role models, motivating and inspiring the young participants through their guidance and presence. The program will focus on themes that nurture key life skills, such as self-esteem, motivation, emotional management, and problem-solving. By encouraging children to engage in teamwork and decision-making, the program aims to strengthen their resilience and empower them for future challenges. 

Participants in the program will be awarded certificates upon completion, celebrating their growth and achievements.

Trento kept its playoff ambitions alive with a road win at Joventut, leaving the two teams tied at 6-8 just outside the Group A top six. Trento also holds the head-to-head tiebreak advantage after completing a season sweep of the Spanish team. Trento controlled the whole game, leading 44-52 at halftime and holding several double-digit advantages in the second half to cruise home. Myles Cale netted Trento’s first 10 points and top scored with 21, while Jordan Ford grabbed all of his 15 points in the last 12 minutes. Sam Dekker paced Joventut with 19 points in defeat.

We won because we are better, but it was not a comfortable match at any time. Let the past of that game help us to know that it is a team that made it very difficult for us. We don't have to think about the consequences of either winning or losing. We have to think about doing things well at minute 1, then at minute 2 and so on until minute 40. And if there is extra time, then until the game is over. What we have to do is prepare for difficulties and prepare for it to cost us. That's the best we can do. Power Rankings through Round 22: Real Madrid, Barcelona on the rise

Welcome to the January edition of the Turkish Airlines EuroLeague Power Rankings. The following list is the brainchild of [EuroLeague.net](http://EuroLeague.net)'s team of experts, which is made up of [Geoff Gillingham](https://x.com/GeoffGillingham), [Frankie Sachs](https://x.com/MrEuroleague), [Igor Petrinovic](https://x.com/IgorPetrinovic) and [Javier Gancedo](https://x.com/ganchetto).

The power rankings represent where the experts rank if compared to all teams right now and not necessarily where they feel they will be at the end of the season.

Next to each team, there are several numbers. First is the team's record. It is followed by the highest rank on any individual ballot, and the next number represents the lowest.

### 1. Olympiacos Piraeus (16-6); 1, 1

**Previous rankings: Preseason - 2. November - 1. December – 1.**

Olympiacos is the hottest team in the competition and despite its many injuries, the Reds keep winning. Sasha Vezenkov has been just unstoppable in 2025, even netting 45 points, the third-best scoring mark in the modern EuroLeague era, against Bayern. Coach Georgios Bartzokas's team is deep in every position and players like Alec Peters, Shaquielle McKissic and Moustapha Fall are always ready to step up. Things could get even better with a healthier Nikola Milutinov. Right now, Olympiacos is the team to beat in the competition. *--* *Javier Gancedo*

### 2. Panathinaikos AKTOR Athens (13-9); 2, 4

**Previous rankings: Preseason - 1. November - 2. December – 3.**

Panathinaikos is coming off two tough defeats in the double-round week, and it is now without injured centers Mathias Lessort and Omer Yurtseven, but there are plenty of reasons why the Greens have risen one place to second in our power rankings. Kendrick Nunn is the best scorer in the EuroLeague, Panathinaikos remains stacked full of talent, and Ergin Ataman knows what it takes to create a winning machine. When Panathinaikos is clicking – as it was between Rounds 16 and 20 – there’s arguably no better team in the league. *--* *Geoff Gillingham*

### 3. AS Monaco (13-9); 2, 4

**Previous rankings: Preseason - 6. November - 8. December – 2.**

Just two weeks ago Monaco was atop of the standings and tied for the most wins in the league, but the team from the Principality has three losses in the last three games. What’s a bit unusual is that the team with so many clutch players on the roster, and coached by arguably the most clutch performer in EuroLeague history, failed to win a pair of nail-biters last week, despite having the last possession to win at the end of regulation in both games. Losses aside, Monaco is playing well and is getting Alpha Diallo back to full speed, with Vassilis Spanoulis's men having the path to both the playoffs and home-court advantage in their own hands. *--* *Igor Petrinovic*

### 4. Fenerbahce Beko Istanbul (14-7); 2, 5

**Previous rankings: Preseason - 3. November -3. December – 4.**

Solidly in second place in the standings, Fenerbahce has survived a series of injuries to its backcourt to win four games in a row. Coach Sarunas Jasikevicius has instilled his toughness into his charges and at its best, Fenerbahce is a team to be feared. However, when the team takes its foot off the gas, it can be vulnerable. Ultimately, the likes of Nigel Hayes-Davis and Marko Guduric plus Wade Baldwin – when he returns, make up a dangerous core and the rest of the rotation is deep with talent and experience. Let's see how Fenerbahce responds to Friday’s trip to league-leading Olympiacos. *--* *Frankie Sachs*

### 5. Real Madrid (12-10); 4, 6

**Previous rankings: Preseason - 4. November - 9. December – 8.**

Slowly but steadily, things are getting better for Real Madrid in 2025. Despite losing forward Gabriel Deck to injury, *Los Blancos* found their rhythm once Dzanan Musa returned to action. Facu Campazzo is proving night in, night out that he is one of the best point guards in the competition. Even when Walter Tavares has been in foul trouble, Usman Garuba and Serge Ibaka have appeared. Dennis Smith Jr. should give Madrid more athleticism and a solid option to attack the rim. Its recent loss against Olympiacos should be a wake-up call, as Real is ready to achieve big things. *--* *Javier Gancedo*

### 6. FC Barcelona (13-9); 5, 9

**Previous rankings: Preseason - 5. November - 5. December – 10.**

With four straight wins, Barcelona has started to come together. Even more impressive is that three of those wins came against teams from the top part of the standings and it did so without a fully healthy roster. Kevin Punter leads five Barca players with PIRs in double figures and the likes of Chimezie Metu and Dario Brizuela have been playing their best basketball lately. The leadership and experience of Jan Vesely and Jabari Parker shan’t be overlooked either. Of its remaining games, Barca will face six of the seven teams with the worst records in the league, so a strong finish could be in the cards. *--* *Frankie Sachs*

### 7. Paris Basketball (13-8); 7, 10

**Previous rankings: Preseason - 17. November - 4. December – 5.**

Paris dropped a few spots down after a rough stretch that saw it lose four in a row. Back-to-back wins over struggling Efes and Maccabi did little to convince the panel that Paris remains a Final Four contender. TJ Shorts has been otherworldly, but while he is surrounded by a deep supporting cast, there is no second star. Even though an upcoming run of five home games in six contests could do wonders for the Parisians, only time will tell if the EuroLeague debutants have the mettle to stand up to the pressure of the closing stretch. *--* *Frankie Sachs*

### 8. EA7 Emporio Armani Milan (12-10); 6, 10

**Previous rankings: Preseason - 8. November - 13. December – 11.**

Any team featuring Nikola Mirotic and Zach LeDay needs to be taken seriously. Milan had a dreadful start to the EuroLeague season but has recovered and now finds itself in the play-in spots, with Ettore Messina’s men doing the difficult part – winning five of its last six road games – but falling into old habits at Unipol Forum, winning one of its last four games there. Still, there’s a lot of upside with Milan, especially once their injury list starts to reduce (Mirotic is now out for at least two weeks), and the Italian side should be a threat in the final stretch of the season. *--* *Geoff Gillingham*

### 9. Crvena Zvezda Meridianbet Belgrade (13-9); 6, 11

**Previous rankings: Preseason - 12. November - 11. December – 13.**

The performances might not always be impressive, but the results are certainly there for Crvena Zvezda, the winner in five of the last six rounds and seven of the last nine. Five of those wins came by a margin of 8 points or fewer, and in four of those games Zvezda overcame a deficit of at least 10 points. That just shows the toughness, character and experience of this team, which Zvezda has in abundance. So far, it propelled Zvezda into a tie for the fourth-best record in the standings, and going forward those exact traits might just be the key in the final stretch of the regular season. *--* *Igor Petrinovic*

### 10. Partizan Mozzart Bet Belgrade (11-11); 7, 10

**Previous rankings: Preseason - 9. November - 17. December – 14.**

Partizan has had its share of ups and downs, but it is currently on another surge. This Zeljko Obradovic’s group is on a current run of four wins in the last five games, which has brought the team to a .500 record for the first time since Round 4. Last week’s first-ever back-to-back road wins in a double round by a combined margin of 51 points were particularly impressive. The success has come despite the vast number of injuries that have affected the team, with Carlik Jones, Sterling Brown and Tyrique Jones all stepping up offensively, while Partizan's defense is third-best in the league, allowing 80.2 points per game. *--* *Igor Petrinovic*

### 11. FC Bayern Munich (12-10); 10, 11

**Previous rankings: Preseason - 15. November - 6. December – 7.**

A tale of two teams in one. Bayern has been really solid at home but not so competitive on the road. Some of its players have been really solid all season – Nick Weiler-Babb and Devin Booker in particular. There is some good news, as veteran forward Vladimir Lucic should be back in action very soon. Lucic should allow Carsen Edwards to find even better scoring options, too. Experienced players like Niels Giffey, Johannes Voigtmann and Shabazz Napier know that this is go-time if Bayern wants to be in the playoffs by late April. *--* *Javier Gancedo*

### 12. Zalgiris Kaunas (11-11); 12, 14

**Previous rankings: Preseason - 13. November - 10. December – 9.**

Things have taken a turn for Zalgiris of late, as Andrea Trinchieri’s men have lost five of their last six games to fall out of postseason contention. Zalgiris still has plenty of exciting talent, headlined by Lonnie Walker, Sylvain Francisco and Alen Smailagic, but when its league-best defense falters, its league-worst offense hasn’t responded in recent weeks. Hopes were so high for Zalgiris in the first part of the campaign, the club’s fans will just be hoping the team can return to that level and get back in postseason contention. *--* *Geoff Gillingham*

### 13. Anadolu Efes Istanbul (10-12); 12, 15

**Previous rankings: Preseason - 7. November - 7. December – 6.**

First things first, Efes needs to bounce back from its recent losses and get its first win with coach Luca Banchi. With players like Darius Thompson, Shane Larkin and Elijah Bryant, Coach Banchi's extra-pass offense should work really well once the pressure of winning that first game is off their shoulders. PJ Dozier has arrived to offer size, defense and athleticism. Efes has struggled to get Vincent Poirier involved, but his numbers have improved lately. Efes has all the tools to bounce back: talent, experience, size and depth. Expect them to get better. *--* *Javier Gancedo*

### 14. LDLC ASVEL Villeurbanne (10-12); 12, 16

**Previous rankings: Preseason - 16. November - 15. December – 14.**

Theo Maledon has taken the EuroLeague by storm this season, earning December MVP honors for his efforts, and that has helped ASVEL achieve more wins (10) after 22 rounds than it did in all of last season (nine). A special mention for coach Pierric Poupet, too, who has done an excellent job in molding a team that has been more than willing to play the role of party pooper. Since Round 10, ASVEL has gone 8-5 and is currently 13th, but eight of its next nine games are against teams in the Top 10. Rocky seas could be ahead. *--* *Geoff Gillingham*

### 15. Virtus Segafredo Bologna (7-15); 14, 16

**Previous rankings: Preseason - 16. November - 16. December – 15 (tie).**

One man: Dusko Ivanovic. The EuroLeague’s version of a firefighter, the Montenegrin coach has led Virtus to a 5-3 record in his eight games in charge – two of the team’s three road wins this season have come under Coach Ivanovic – and that has helped his squad solidify themselves in 16th. Still five games off the play-in spots, Virtus is unlikely to realistically be playing postseason basketball in mid-April, but with the likes of Toko Shengelia and Isaia Cordinier, as well as Matt Morgan now finding his feet, there is a glimmer of hope. *--* *Geoff Gillingham*

### 16. Baskonia Vitoria-Gasteiz (9-13); 14, 16

**Previous rankings: Preseason - 11. November - 14. December – 15 (tie).**

Baskonia played a great 80 minutes of basketball last week, but it was enough for only one win – against the reigning champs, Panathinaikos. The problem for Baskonia, however, has been its play away from home, where it has a 2-8 record. The bad news is that seven of Baskonia’s last 12 games the rest of the way will be on the road. The positive news is that Baskonia has won two of its last five games away from home. Chima Moneke sent a message saying “we are going to keep fighting, we are not gonna give up” last week, but the room for mistakes, and letdowns, is getting smaller by each round. *--* *Igor Petrinovic*

### 17. Maccabi Playtika Tel Aviv (5-17); 17, 17

**Previous rankings: Preseason - 14. November - 12. December – 17.**

At times it seems like the bottom has fallen out for Maccabi, which is spiraling towards its worst season under the current format. Players have been coming and going all season and injuries haven’t helped the club find consistency. At its best, Maccabi can be quite dangerous; over its last five games, the Israeli champion pounded Zalgiris and took Real Madrid to overtime in the Spanish capital. In the other three of the last five, it’s lost by an average margin of 23 points. Teams will need to beware of Maccabi down the stretch, as a few results could wreak havoc on the playoff race for others. *--* *Frankie Sachs*

With only Justin Bean out and less pressure due to its current situation, players like David McCormack, Matt Thomas, Martin Hermannsson and Gabriele Procida should all do better. Bentil started this season in the BKT EuroCup with Hapoel Shlomo Tel Aviv, but appeared in only two games. He then moved to Napoli Basket in Italy, where he averaged 14.9 points and 6.3 rebounds in 11 Italian League appearances.

Last season, Bentil spent in Japan with the Gunma Crane Thunder, where he averaged 17.0 points and 5.5 rebounds per game.

Best of Ben Bentil in the EuroLeague

In two seasons with Panathinaikos AKTOR Athens and another each with EA7 Emporio Armani Milan and Crvena Zvezda, Bentil has appeared in 107 EuroLeague games, of which he started 40. In those 107 appearances, he averaged 6.0 points on 37.4% three-point shooting and 2.8 rebounds over 15:35 per game.

Bentil also amassed a slew of trophies with those teams, winning Greek League championships in 2020 and 2021, the Italian League and Cup double in 2022 and the Serbian League and Cup double in 2023.

A native of Ghana, Bentil moved to the United States when he was 15 to play high-school basketball and then played college basketball at Providence College. 

He began his professional career in the G League with the Fort Wayne Mad Ants before played briefly for the Xinjiang Flying Tigers in China and then the Dallas Mavericks in the NBA. He then went on to play for Chalons-Reims in France, Bilbao Basket in Spain, Peristeri in Greece and Bahcesehir Koleji in Türkiye.

Seeley poured in a career-high 31 points in [U-BT Cluj-Napoca](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/en/eurocup/teams/u-bt-cluj-napoca/clu/)’s [94-81 home win over Turk Telekom Ankara](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/en/eurocup/news/dj-seeley-helps-cluj-brushes-aside-turk-telekom-94-81/), which left the Romanian champs firmly on course to reach the BKT EuroCup playoffs, behind a team 23 assists and good work from several other players.

[Zavier Simpson](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/en/eurocup/players/zavier-simpson/013302/) added 21 points, 11 of them in the fourth quarter with Seeley taking a back seat in the second half after sinking 25 points in the first. Simpson also dished out 10 assists while [De’Shawn Stephens](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/en/eurocup/players/de-shawn-stephens/006618/) and [Adam Mokoka](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/en/eurocup/players/adam-mokoka/012698/) chipped in with 10 points each to underline a smooth team effort which put Seeley to the fore.

The result left Cluj on a 9-7 record in Group B with two games remaining in the regular season, both of them road outings against teams that have no chance of reaching the playoffs. Cluj will be up against 7Bet-Lietkabelis Panevezys followed by a visit to Aris Midea Thessaloniki in the final two rounds and head coach [Mihai Silvasan](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/en/eurocup/teams/u-bt-cluj-napoca/clu/silvasan-mihai/) warned his men against taking anything for granted.

“Big win for us and I want to start by thanking the supporters who really helped us,” Silvasan told reporters at the postgame press conference. “The job isn’t done yet as we can still fail to qualify, so we need to stay focused. I’m really happy with the way we played tonight, having had 23 assists and we scored 94 points, but it was also the defense that facilitated that.

“We played against a really good team with some really skilled players, but tonight we were the better team and we deserved to win. We move forward and need to keep our feet on the ground.”

Turk Telekom might have expected a somewhat easier outing after a comfortable 99-80 win in the reverse fixture, but the visitors were stung by a torrid pace dictated by Cluj as much as by the fervent home fans who generated a raucous atmosphere in the gym.

Coach Erdem Can had no complaints, having conceded that his team got undone at both ends of the court.

“We gave too many open shots to our opponents and offensively we didn’t share the ball well enough. We have two more games and our target is to win both in order to achieve the best possible finish in the regular season.”

The star forward will be re-evaluated in two weeks.

EA7 Emporio Armani Milan will be without its biggest star and top scorer Nikola Mirotic for at least two weeks, the club announced on Wednesday morning. During an Italian League game over the weekend, “Mirotic suffered an injury to the adductor of his right thigh, which will be re-evaluated in two weeks”, the club wrote in an official statement.

Two other Milan players, Zach LeDay and Leandro Bolmaro also suffered injury problems in that domestic league game, but have travelled with the team to Istanbul and are a game-time decision for Milan, which visits Anadolu Efes on Thursday night.

Mirotic ranks fifth in scoring this season (18.3 ppg.) and third in rebounding (6.6 rpg.) this season. The star forward is also eighth in average minutes played (28:32), all team-high numbers.

Milan will have a tough task to find a way to overcome his absence, first in Istanbul, and then at least also a week later at home against the reigning champ Panathinaikos AKTOR Athens.

Former MVP will be re-evaluated in two weeks.

Panathinaikos AKTOR Athens learned another bad injury news, with center Omer Yurtseven suffering a leg injury. Yurtseven got hurt in the Greek League game against arch-rival Olympiacos Pireuas, and it will keep him sidelined six to eight weeks, according to the club.

It is another major blow for Panathinaikos's frontcourt, after losing all-EuroLeague center Mathias Lessort in Round 17, and with Kostas Antetokounmpo appearing in only three games this season.

In the absence of Lessort, it was Yurtseven who stepped up. Over the last four games, he posted 17.3 points and 7.3 rebounds, which improved his season averages to 8.2 points and 3.8 rebounds.
