Paris Basketball is in just its first year in the EuroLeague, but it shows a grit and determination often associated with teams with many years of experience under their belt.

Paris is already looking like a EuroLeague mainstay

Winning a game in the highly competitive Turkish Airlines EuroLeague is anything but an easy task.

Securing victories in as many as six tight affairs by beating each of the opponents by single digits is another thing altogether, let alone as the competition’s debutant team. That shows some strong character from both the players and coaching staff, and that’s precisely what [Paris Basketball](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/en/euroleague/teams/paris-basketball/prs/) has demonstrated this term.

A slow start with two straight defeats was followed by Paris’s first-ever EuroLeague victory in Round 3, which came against the reigning champion in Panathinaikos AKTOR Athens, no less. If coach Tiago Splitter’s side sent a message with that result, the way that his men bounced back from a narrow 109-107 defeat at FC Bayern Munich has been remarkable, with Paris notching five straight victories to improve to a 6-3 record, joint second best in the EuroLeague.

“The guys are really buying in and playing hard every night,” Coach Splitter told EuroLeague TV after [Wednesday night’s 83-77 victory over Zalgiris Kaunas](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/en/euroleague/news/paris-beats-zalgiris-83-77-for-fifth-straight-win/). “This is just a display of their discipline, how hard they play and how togetherness is a big value in the team.”

After narrowly outscoring Zalgiris 17-16 in the first quarter, Paris pushed to pull away in the second. Yet, Zalgiris, which came into the game ranking fifth in offensive rebounds with 12.4 per game, picked up as many as 9 boards that offered the guests scores off second-chance opportunities. Paris still managed to take a 40-36 lead into the second half, when the hosts protected the boards and outrebounded Zalgiris 21-14 to control the rhythm of the game.

“In the second quarter we could see that a lot of the reason why they were staying in the game was the second-chance opportunities,” [Kevarrius Hayes](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/euroleague/players/kevarrius-hayes/010390/), who paired his 10 points with a season-high 9 rebounds against his former team, admitted. “We cut that down, we were able to secure the rebounds and get out in open court and it really worked out in our favor.”

Having recorded six victories with an average difference of just over 5 points, Paris has shown that it has what it takes to look in the eye of any opponent in the competition. The 2023-24 BKT EuroCup winner now has a tough assignment to keep this streak going as on Friday it is off to Spain, where it will face the current EuroLeague co-leader in FC Barcelona (7-2).

Dekker had not played an official basketball game since winning the British League title with the London Lions. His contract is still being honored by the Lions, but Dekker cannot play in the British League due to budget restrictions. Joventut saw an opportunity and signed him. Dekker was a [2022-23 All-EuroCup Second Team](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/en/eurocup/news/ec-2022-23-all-eurocup-second-team/) selection and helped London reach the EuroCup semifinals last season.

Despite being a little out of rhythm, Dekker knows the competition well and his talent did the rest. He did not have spectacular numbers, finishing the game with 7 points, 5 rebounds, 3 assists and a PIR of 3, but Dekker stepped up in two critical moments during the game. When [Devon Dotson](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/en/eurocup/players/devon-durrell-dotson/013285/) briefly left the game with a small injury, Dekker had 4 points which allowed Joventut to keep a 61-60 lead after 30 minutes.

And when Buducnost completed its comeback, 70-72, with over 2 minutes remaining, Joventut needed a go-to guy, as Buducnost had limited the hosts to just 2 points in the previous 5 minutes. After a timeout, [Guillem Vives](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/en/eurocup/players/guillem-vives/002361/) found Dekker for the go-ahead three-pointer from the left corner. After a defensive stop, [Adam Hanga](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/en/eurocup/players/adam-hanga/005099/) also struck from downtown to put Joventut on the right track, 76-72. Defense did the rest, as Buducnost was held scoreless in the last 2 minutes.

Dotson had been sensational before his injury, and still finished the game with career-highs of 26 points and a PIR of 32. He had 23 of those points in the opening 23 minutes before getting injured on his first missed shot, but was able to come back and help his team win.

"A great win today. We emphasized before the game to come out with a lot of energy and a lot of motivation. In the past games, we have played tight, every game has been really close," Dotson said after the game. "Today, we wanted to change that and really finish the game and just get this win. It was a great victory. I am glad the team played well and helped me, uplifted me to play well, also."

Head coach [Dani Miret](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/en/eurocup/teams/joventut-badalona/jov/miret-daniel/) took in some fresh air once his team broke a four-game losing streak in the competition. He believes that enjoying themselves playing good basketball is the next step for the team after the upcoming break.

"I think that in other games, we deserved victories because we are worrying and putting all the effort, making a lot of solid things. Right now, this victory will help us shine a little bit more because when we are competing, we are nor enjoying what we need to enjoy," Coach Miret said. "We are doing the job but good basketball teams also enjoy. It is easy when you are winning and this is what the team needs right now, have confidence, start to enjoy playing with each other. It is a great victory for the team."

Having had the dubious honor of making 0 of 20 shots from deep between them in the first half, the two sides produced better and more entertaining basketball in the second, with Reyer ultimately prevailing thanks to racking up a staggering 50 rebounds and dishing out 24 assists.

The home team’s head coach [Neven Spahija](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/en/eurocup/teams/umana-reyer-venice/vnc/spahija-neven/) heaped praise on his men after the game, as Reyer rekindled its post-season hopes by improving to 3-5 while Turk Telekom slipped to 4-4.

“Today we won the game with defense as we had very poor shooting percentages, but at least we hit 3 threes in the second half and we totaled 50 rebounds, which I haven’t seen in a long time,” Spahija said in his post-game comments. “Winning always makes good chemistry and positive vibes for the future.

“We need to have better shooting percentages but when it doesn’t work you need to play defense and that’s what we did. Congratulations to the players for an amazing effort, we kept a team like Turk Telekom down to just 67 points.”

Reyer finished on a mere 3-of-21 from downtown but restricted Turk Telekom to 4-of-19, while the Italian side also allowed its rival only 21 boards and just 12 assists.

[Rodney McGruder](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/en/eurocup/players/rodney-mc-gruder/012800/) led the scoring charge with a game-high 20 points and big man [Mfiondu Kabengele ](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/en/eurocup/players/mfiondu-kabengele/012796/)was all over the floor for Reyer, having racked up a tied career-high 15 rebounds to go with 10 points and 5 assists.

“It was a good effort and everybody competed hard. We now need to stay healthy, get good practices in and build consistency,” said Kabengele, who lit up the contest with a ferocious alley-oop in the fourth quarter which galvanized the vocal home fans.

Umana Reyer Venice improved to 3-5 in Group B of the BKT EuroCup and stayed in the post-season picture after a 75-67 home win over Turk Telekom Ankara, which dropped to 4-4 in Group B.

It was a game of two different halves as the opening period was played almost at a walking pace and produced a catalog of errors, while the contest came to life in the second thanks to improved offense from both teams.

Rodney McGruder paced Reyer with 20 points and 6 boards, Kyle Wiltjer added 16 points while Mfiondu Kabengele racked up 10 points and 15 rebounds, as the hosts dominated the boards with their physical approach at both ends.

Anthony Brown netted 18 points and Braian Angola chipped in with 16 for Turk Telekom, whose support cast fell woefully short much to the anguish of had coach Erdem Can, whose constant pleas during time outs for a more energetic display from his men seem to have fallen on deaf ears.

The rivals combined for 0-of-20 shooting from downtown in the first half, with Reyer missing 12 shots from three-point range and Turk Telekom 8, as both teams struggled from all over the court. Despite being ice cold from deep, Reyer was 30-24 ahead at halftime as it restricted Turk Telekom to a mere 3 assists while the home team had 8.

It was as if two different teams stepped out on the court after the break as Brown knocked down the opening two triples of the game and all of a sudden the visitors nosed ahead 34-36, but their joy was short-lived.

Reyer hit back with a 19-4 run to turn the tide for good and headed into the final 10 minutes of the contest with a 55-46 advantage at the end of the third quarter, with McGruder doing damage from all over.

Turk Telekom slashed the deficit to 68-66 late in the fourth as the Turkish side beefed up its defense in an effort to force the final twist, but Reyer held firm when the chips were down and sealed its victory with a 7-0 run in the home stretch.

Paris Basketball guard TJ Shorts spoke to EuroLeague TV after his team beat Zalgiris Kaunas in Round 9 of the 2024-25 Turkish Airlines EuroLeague season.

Paris Basketball continued its momentum in the EuroLeague by defeating Zalgiris Kaunas 83-77 in Round 9 to notch its fifth win in a row.

Paris Basketball extended its winning streak to five games by defeating Zalgiris 83-77 at Adidas Arena in Round 9. In a tight affair, Paris narrowly outscored Zalgiris in each of the first three quarters and extended its lead to double digits in the fourth to see the game off. This win allows the French side to improve to 6-3, with Zalgiris now on the same record. 

TJ Shorts led all scorers with 21 points and Collin Malcolm had 17, while Nadir Hifi and Kevarrius Hayes netted 10 apiece. For the visitors, Ignas Brazdeikis recorded 15 points, Arnas Butkevicius paired his 12 points with 9 rebounds, and Laurynas Birutis added 11 points.

Shorts opened the scoring with a trademark mid-range jumper before setting up Hayes, who netted inside for an early four-point lead. Matt Mitchell and Tyson Ward traded buckets before Lonnie Walker’s first EuroLeague points brought Zalgiris within 6-5. A triple from Hifi was followed by a jumper from Walker, but Malcolm nailed one of his own to give Paris an 11-7 cushion. Yet, Birutis took over and netted 7 points to put Zalgiris ahead, 13-14. Then, Malcolm sank a corner triple before Dovydas Giedraitis beat the first-quarter buzzer with a layup to make it 17-16.

Hayes scored inside, but Brazdeikis completed a three-point play off the bench for a 20-21 lead. Then, Shorts drove all the way to the basket and Malcolm netted another triple for a 25-21 cushion. Brazdeikis and Hifi exchanged baskets before the latter made a couple of free throws, opening a 29-23 margin. Bandja Sy drilled a three-pointer, but four points from Butkevicius and three free throws from Sylvain Francisco brought Zalgiris within 32-30. Then, Butkevicius and Shorts traded baskets before the latter nailed an open triple to restore a 37-33 lead. Deividas Sirvydis finally knocked down a triple after 13 unsuccessful attempts from seven different Zalgiris players, but Shorts responded with a three-point play for a 40-36 cushion at halftime.

Walker started off the third quarter with a corner triple before Birutis scored twice inside to put Zalgiris back in front, 43-45. The game suddenly turned into a back-and-forth affair, with Brazdeikis netting a triple and Malcolm completing a three-point play to give Paris a 52-51 lead. Butkevicius slammed home a dunk off the baseline, drew a foul and nailed a free throw, but Shorts and Hifi sank back-to-back triples in transition for a 58-54 lead. Shorts extended Paris’s run to 10 points with a floater, however a put-back bucket from Ulanovas trimmed the deficit to 62-56 heading into the final quarter.

Hayes scored twice in the paint to give Paris a double-digit lead, 67-56, for the first time in the game. Zalgiris didn’t score a single fourth-quarter field goal until Ulanovas completed a three-point play with 6:27 remaining to cut the difference to 69-60. Mikael Jantunen and Mitchell traded baskets before a three-point play from Brazdeikis kept Zalgiris in touch, 73-65. Yet, Maodo Lo’s triple was followed by Leopold Cavaliere’s dunk to restore a 78-65 lead. Zalgiris responded with two straight dunks from Brazdeikis and Butkevicius, then Francisco netted three unanswered points to trim the deficit to 78-72 with 1:24 left on the clock. Yet, Jantunen sank a dagger from beyond the arc to end Zalgiris’s momentum and practically finished the game off by making it 81-72, despite the visitors' effort to bounce back with less than a minute remaining.

The French side now has the joint second-best record in the EuroLeague

Joventut Badalona snapped a four-game losing streak in Group A by beating Buducnost VOLI Podgorica 78-72 at home in Round 8 on Wednesday. 

Both teams now have 3-5 records in Group A. Devon Dotson led the winners with 26 points and Adam Hanga added 13 for Joventut. McKinley Wright and Rasheed Sulaimon paced Buducnost with 12 points apiece.

Dotson got Joventut going with a layup and a floater. He soon followed Ante Tomic's jumper with a driving layup that caused Buducnost to call a timeout at 8-0. Kenan Kamenjas stepped up with a layup that a red-hot Dotson bettered with a bomb from downtown. Yogi Ferrell answered from beyond the arc and found Kamenjas for a layup that got Buducnost closer, 11-7. After Artem Pustovyi hit a mid-range jumper, Kamenjas and Nikola Tanaskovic got the visitors even closer, 13-12. Dotson followed a triple with a three-point play, but Sulaimon hit a floater and a bomb from downtown for a 19-18 score. Wright nailed a jumper to give Buducnost its first lead, 19-20, after 10 minutes.

Tomic scored down low early in the second quarter and Dotson added a three-pointer for a 24-21 Joventut lead. Yannick Kraag sank a floater in transition, Djordje Jovanovic answered from downtown and Pep Busquets's put-back layup kept Joventut in charge, 28-24. Pustovyi scored down low and erased Juwan Morgan's jumper with a jump hook. Wright stepped up with back-to-back three-point plays that tied it at 32-32. Kraag scored again, Hanga added a three-pointer and Tomic's jump hook gave his team a 40-34 lead. Aleksa Ilic beat the buzzer with a tip-in that fixed the halftime score at 40-36.

Hanga fired in his trademark corner triple right after the break and Dotson improved Andrija Slavkovic's put-back layup with a three-point play. Tanaskovic scored down low and Ferrell hit a jumper. Dotson hit a stop-and-pop shot, Alen Omic matched that with a layup and Ferrell downed a fadeaway jumper that brought Buducnost within 48-47. Kassius Robertson dunked off a steal and struck from beyond the arc to give Joventut fresh air at 53-47. Fletcher Magee found his first points, Guillem Vives and Sulaimon traded triples and Sam Dekker restored a 60-54 Joventut lead. Magee buried a deep three-pointer, getting help from Wright and Morgan to bring the visitors within 61-60 after 30 minutes.

Tomic buried another jump hook early in the fourth quarter. Dotson took over with a three-point play and Hanga added a reverse layup that prompted Buducnost to call timeout at 68-60. Magee sank a corner triple which Slavkovic followed with a put-back layup. Omic scored in the paint, Sulaimon downed a three-pointer and found Morgan for an alley-oop layup that put Buducnost on top, 70-72, with over 2 minutes left. Dekker buried a three-pointer and Hanga also struck from beyond the arc for a 76-72 score. Robertson sealed the outcome from the foul line.

Unsung Marko Simonovic stepped up with big fourth quarter for Bahcesehir

[Bahcesehir College Istanbul](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/en/eurocup/teams/bahcesehir-college-istanbul/roster/bah/?season=2024-25) has been taking the BKT EuroCup by storm this season with a roster stacked with EuroLeague-level players receiving loads of attention. [Marko Simonovic](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/en/eurocup/players/marko-simonovic/012711/) hasn’t been talked about much despite a strong season, and he stepped up big in the fourth quarter of a [hard-fought victory](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/en/eurocup/news/bahcesehir-comes-up-with-big-plays-to-fight-past-ulm-grab-fifth-straight-victory/). 

Bahcesehir never was able to put away [ratiopharm Ulm](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/eurocup/teams/ratiopharm-ulm/roster/ulm/?season=2024-25) but used a solid fourth quarter to keep the hosts at bay in a 72-80 road win for a fifth straight victory and a 7-1 record atop Group A. 

"In the fourth quarter, we really played smart. Throughout the game, we had some good moments but then we had terrible moments,” said [Mateusz Ponitka](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/en/eurocup/players/mateusz-ponitka/004172/), who tallied 12 points, 8 rebounds and 8 assists. 

Ponitka was one of four players to score in double figures. [Sehmus Hazer](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/en/eurocup/players/sehmus-hazer/011201/) poured in 20 points and [Tai Odiase ](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/en/eurocup/players/tai-odiase/011823/)added 14 points including a couple of massive dunks. 

Still, it was the unsung Simonovic who led the team in scoring in the fourth quarter with 9 of his 11 points. He started with 2 free throws and then knocked down a triple, which turned a tie game into a 7-point lead. The 25-year-old added a push shot in the lane and a reverse layup to keep Bahcesehir up 66-71. 

The Montenegro big man then showed up on defense, grabbing big defensive rebounds with 105 and 67 seconds remaining - both times after Ulm had snatched offensive rebounds but failed to convert. He finished with 11 points and 5 rebounds.

Marko Simonovic left his mark in Ulm

Simonovic played the first half of last season in the EuroLeague with[ Crvena Zvezda Meridianbet Belgrade](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/en/euroleague/teams/crvena-zvezda-meridianbet-belgrade/statistics/red/?season=2023-24&phase=All%20phases) before moving to the EuroCup in January 2024 and joining Besiktas Istanbul.

The 2.13-meter center also stood out for the Montenegro national team at the FIBA Basketball World Cup 2023 and FIBA EuroBasket 2022. Still, he has not been noticed much this season with all the other star talent on Bahcesehir’s roster.

But Simonovic definitely deserves some love as he has now scored in double figures in seven of the team’s eight EuroCup games, averaging 11.6 points per game. He is also shooting 43.5% on three-pointers to go with 82.9% from the foul line as well as 4.6 rebounds.
