In a must-watch matchup between two of the five teams currently tied for second place, Bayern (7-3) will look to extend its 100% home record against Barcelona (7-3). The Spanish team needs to bounce back from last week’s home loss to Paris, and will hope that young guard [Juan Nunez](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/euroleague/players/juan-nunez/010106/) and three-point threat [Joel Parra](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/euroleague/players/joel-parra/007464/) can stay strong after delivering their best performances of the season in that game. Bayern will look for another free-flowing offensive exhibition which resulted in an outburst of 115 points to destroy ALBA last time out, with [Nick Weiler-Babb](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/euroleague/players/nick-weiler-babb/010391/) orchestrating (11 assists vs. ALBA) and league-leading scorer [Carsen Edwards](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/en/euroleague/players/carsen-edwards/011987/) (21.0 points per game) confident enough to shoot from anywhere. Barcelona failed to contain Paris’s backcourt last week, and needs a much more solid defensive effort to prevail in Munich.

Fenerbahce Beko has leaned on its defense to achieve the EuroLeague's best record through the first 10 games, but they are not the only team shining on defense this season.

Stats review: The importance of defensive details

It was an eventful double-round week in the Turkish Airlines EuroLeague as just five teams managed to escape with a pair of victories, setting the margin between second and ninth place in the standings at just a single game heading into Round 11. It is hard to escape just how unforgiving the league landscape is at this point as one week can be the difference between the optimism that comes with a spot near the top of the standings and the worry that comes with being on the edge of the early playoff picture. 

That paints the teams that can rise up above the fray – even if only for a few games – in a different light. [Fenerbahce Beko Istanbul](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/en/euroleague/teams/fenerbahce-beko-istanbul/ulk/) is the only team with a degree of separation at the moment as its five-game winning streak has the Turkish side one game clear at the top of the standings. Ranked 15th in offensive efficiency, its defense has been absolutely crucial to its success to this point.

The table above lists the top eight teams in points per possession allowed this season with some additional details – turnover rate, free throw rate, and Synergy Shot Quality (SSQ) – for reference. Given how difficult it is for teams to differentiate themselves at this level, the details are where things get interesting for Fenerbahce. Forcing turnovers at the lowest rate in the EuroLeague while committing fouls at the second-highest rate, its shot defense has had to be special to propel its record. 

SSQ provides some insight into their recipe for success – it calculates the expected value of any given shot based on a data-driven model that considers all the advanced tracking data from the last decade of attempts in the EuroLeague. Fenerbahce is one of four teams with an SSQ under one point per attempt this season along with [Zalgiris Kaunas](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/en/euroleague/teams/zalgiris-kaunas/zal/) and [Baskonia Vitoria-Gasteiz](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/en/euroleague/teams/baskonia-vitoria-gasteiz/bas/) – both featured above – and [Partizan Mozzart Bet Belgrade](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/en/euroleague/teams/partizan-mozzart-bet-belgrade/par/), whose uneven start has been based, at least somewhat, on a run of bad luck. 

Fenerbahce and Zalgiris have used a similar formula to limit their opponent’s shot quality this season. One of the main reasons they have been this season’s most efficient defensive units has been their efforts to chase opposing shooters off the three-point line and get to spots early in rotation along the perimeter to contest the shots that do go up. Even if neither team has been overly productive in the passing lanes and will commit some fouls as they scramble to recover around the rim or after switching, the volume of three-point shots they prevent and the quality of their closeouts have set them apart early on. It should come as no surprise, then, that that duo shot a combined 12 for 45 in Fenerbahce’s Round 10 victory at Zalgirio Arena. 

Digging even a layer further, Fenerbahce’s attention to detail coming out of timeouts and diligence finishing plays late in the shot clock have had a noticeable impact on its bottom line defensively. Given the razor-thin margin for error round to round, it takes really good scouting of a set play, true multiple efforts to survive switches, or perfectly timed stunts to force mid-range shots to give a team the upper hand on the scoreboard. Fenerbahce is perhaps the league’s best example of that early on as its work in the details has materialized in the standings. 

Among other superlatives in the details, Zalgiris has been the EuroLeague's top full-court pressing and pick and roll defense, [Crvena Zvezda Meridianbet Belgrade](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/en/euroleague/teams/crvena-zvezda-meridianbet-belgrade/red/) has allowed the fewest opportunities in transition, Partizan has allowed the fewest shots around the rim, [Real Madrid](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/en/euroleague/teams/real-madrid/mad/) has finished plays on the glass more consistently, and [Olympiacos Piraeus](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/en/euroleague/teams/olympiacos-piraeus/oly/) has forced the highest volume of mid-range jumpers. There’s a level of urgency to keep up with the pack right now that makes all the little things teams do at an elite level defensively feel a bit bigger than usual.

Despite missing three key backcourt players, Fenerbahce Beko Istanbul downed Zalgiris Kaunas 65-72 to remain undefeated on the road this season. 


Zagars, Guduric rise to the challenge

Fenerbahce arrived to Zalgirio Arena with severe backcourt problems. [Scottie Wilbekin was injured at the start of the season](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/en/euroleague/news/fenerbahce-confirms-the-worst-scottie-wilbekin-has-torn-his-acl/), the team has been without [Wade Baldwin for some time](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/en/euroleague/news/wade-baldwin-sidelined-with-hamstring-injury/) and [Devon Hall went down last week](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/en/euroleague/news/devon-hall-to-undergo-surgery-on-hand-injury/) and is not expected to return soon. Fenerbahce also lost sharpshooter [Tarik Biberovic](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/en/euroleague/players/tarik-biberovic/006961/) to an ankle injury during the game.

"We are just trying to survive right now. I mean, really, literally. We are not even talking about improving or playing great basketball, honestly," Fenerbahce head coach Sarunas Jasikevicius said after the game. "This is November and I cannot believe I'm speaking like this, but I believe that this is the honest truth."

Luckily for Fenerbahce, two of its healthy guards made the difference on Friday.

Marko Guduric and Arturs Zagars combined for 27 points to lead Fenerbahce Beko Istanbul to its fifth consecutive victory.

Guduric, Zagars lead Fenerbahce past Zalgiris

Many Latvian fans traveled to Kaunas to see playmaker [Arturs Zagars](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/en/euroleague/players/arturs-zagars/008104/) in person. Zagars became a basketball icon in his country when he led the Latvian national team to a fifth-place finish at the 2023 Basketball World Cup with averages of 12.4 points and 7.4 assists. He then joined Fenerbahce, [was loaned out](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/en/euroleague/news/fenerbahce-beko-istanbul-signs-arturs-zagars-will-join-bc-wolves-on-loan/) to [Wolves Twinsbet Vilnius](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/en/eurocup/teams/wolves-vilnius/roster/wol/?season=2023-24) and [suffered a serious knee injury](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/en/eurocup/news/wolves-zagars-to-miss-season-after-knee-injury/) in October 2023. Zagars returned to Fenerbahce this season and is now finding his rhythm.

Against Zalgiris, Zagars hit the game-clinching free throws and finished the game with 10 points, 2 rebounds, 3 assists, 1 steal and 5 fouls drawn for a PIR of 9.

[Marko Guduric](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/en/euroleague/players/marko-guduric/004004/) also stepped up with extended playing time due to his team's backcourt situation. In almost 30 minutes, Guduric had a season-high 17 points on 7-of-7 free-throw shooting, 3 rebounds, 3 assists, 2 steals and 5 fouls drawn. 

Zagars and Guduric were relied on heavily as fellow guard [Skylar Mays](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/en/euroleague/players/skylar-mays/013396/) only played 6 minutes and team captain [Melih Mahmutoglu](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/en/euroleague/players/melih-mahmutoglu/002969/) just 20 seconds.

Maledon’s impressive sophomore season in the Turkish Airlines EuroLeague continued with the LDLC ASVEL Villeurbanne guard's dominant display in a 77-74 win against Crvena Zvezda Meridianbet Belgrade. Maledon finished with 26 points, the second-highest total of his career, after going 4 for 4 on two-pointers, 3 for 5 on three-pointers and 9 for 10 from the free-throw line, while he also had 4 rebounds, 4 assists, 1 steal and drew 10 fouls. This is the second time that Maledon has been the MVP of the Round after achieving this feat in Round 4 of this current season, when he also had a 36 PIR.

 

This time, Maledon shares this honor with Shorts, who led Paris Basketball to a resounding 87-103 road win at FC Barcelona. Shorts had 24 points, making 6-of-10 two-point shots, knocking down his only three-point attempt and sinking 9-of-11 free throws. Shorts also dished 9 assists, had 3 steals, pulled down 1 rebound and drew 11 fouls. This is also a second MVP award for Shorts, who previously earned this honor in Round 5.

 

The next best PIR, 29, belonged to [Trevion Williams ](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/en/euroleague/players/trevion-williams/012604/)of ALBA Berlin. In a 115-88 road loss at FC Bayern Munich, Williams had 18 points, 9 rebounds, 6 assists and 4 steals. Bayern's[ Nick Weiler-Babb](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/en/euroleague/players/nick-weiler-babb/010391/) and Olympiacos Piraeus’s [Sasha Vezenkov](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/en/euroleague/players/sasha-vezenkov/003469/) both recorded a 28 PIR, rounding out this round's list of best performers. Weiler-Babb had 12 points on perfect shooting, in addition to grabbing 3 rebounds, dishing a career-high 11 assists, making 2 steals, and not committing a turnover. Vezenkov posted 21 points in a 91-94 triumph at Maccabi Playtika Tel Aviv, and he also amassed 4 rebounds, 2 assists, 1 block and 6 drawn fouls.

### Individual highs: Nick Weiler-Babb, Bayern, 11 assists

ASVEL’s Maledon outscored all players in Round 10 with his 26 points. Bayern’s [Carsen Edwards](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/en/euroleague/players/carsen-edwards/011987/) is the EuroLeague’s leading scorer with 21.0 points per game.

Real Madrid center [Walter Tavares](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/en/euroleague/players/walter-tavares/005791/) pulled down a round-high 13 rebounds. Tavares is atop the charts in rebounds with 7.9 boards per night.

Bayern’s Weiler-Babb dished 11 assists in Round 10, the most of any player. Maccabi playmaker [Tamir Blatt](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/en/euroleague/players/tamir-blatt/011193/) is the top assist provider in the EuroLeague with 8.7 dimes per contest.

[Darius Thompson](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/en/euroleague/players/darius-thompson/011078/) of Anadolu Efes Istanbul had 5 steals in Round 10, more than anyone else. AS Monaco’s [Mike James](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/en/euroleague/players/mike-james/005985/) and FC Barcelona’s Kevin Punter are tied for the most steals this season with 1.6 per game.

[Andre Roberson](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/en/euroleague/players/andre-roberson/013405/), in just his second game for ASVEL, had a round-high 4 blocks. Anadolu Efes Istanbul’s [Vincent Poirier](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/en/euroleague/players/vincent-poirier/004887/) and Real Madrid’s Tavares are the season leaders in blocks with 1.6 per contest.

Weiler-Babb (12 points, 11 assists), ASVEL’s [Joffrey Lauvergne](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/en/euroleague/players/joffrey-lauvergne/004194/) (13 points, 10 rebounds), Baskonia Vitoria-Gasteiz’s [Donta Hall](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/en/euroleague/players/donta-hall/011196/) (12 points, 11 rebounds) and Fenerbahce Beko Istanbul’s [Nigel Hayes-Davis](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/en/euroleague/players/nigel-hayes-davis/008962/) (18 points, 11 rebounds) all recorded a double-double in Round 10.

It's the second MVP award this season for both players.

Zeljko Obradovic and his KK Partizan lost for a sixth straight game in the EuroLeague, but Olimpia Milano was able to get back to winning ways and take some of the pressure off Ettore Messina.

Milan piled more misery on Partizan but Obradovic is not giving up

The Round 10 matchup between [Partizan Mozzart Bet Belgrade](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/en/euroleague/teams/partizan-mozzart-bet-belgrade/par/) and the visiting [EA7 Emporio Armani Milan](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/en/euroleague/teams/ea7-emporio-armani-milan/mil/) expectedly produced plenty of fireworks on and off the court, with the Italian side [coming out on top 81-88](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/en/euroleague/news/shorthanded-milan-roars-back-to-get-vital-road-win-over-partizan-81-88/) to give its head coach Ettore Messina some breathing space while it piled the pressure on his counterpart Zeljko Obradovic.

The result saw Milan improve to 4-6 while Partizan dropped to 2-8 after yet another loss, its sixth in a row, as the visiting team’s top performer [Nikola Mirotic](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/euroleague/players/nikola-mirotic/000796/) sank a game-high 19 points despite constantly being heckled by a raucous Belgrade crowd.

Mirotic was reportedly on the verge of joining Partizan from FC Barcelona during the 2023 offseason but eventually opted to go to Milan instead, a move many Partizan fans lamented, and they pulled no punches in showing their feelings during the Montenegrin-born forward’s first visit to Belgrade Arena since.

Mirotic and [Zach LeDay](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/euroleague/players/zach-leday/008987/) were instrumental in Milan’s win as the latter netted 13 points against his former club, turning Obradovic into a forlorn figure after seeing his men suffer yet another gut-wrenching defeat.

Worse still for Obradovic, four of those eight defeats came on his team’s home court and as many as six were largely self-inflicted, with Partizan lacking composure and the killer instinct when the chips were down. The slump has left Obradovic, the competition’s most trophy-laden coach with nine titles at five different clubs, skating on thin ice ahead of next week’s Serbian derby against archrival [Crvena Zvezda Meridianbet Belgrade](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/en/euroleague/teams/crvena-zvezda-meridianbet-belgrade/red/).

The outcome of Round 11's Rivalry Series fixture could have a huge impact on Partizan’s campaign in Europe’s premier club competition, but Obradovic was adamant that he still had enough time to turn around his team’s fortunes. He vehemently denied suggestions that Partizan would be nothing more than also-rans this term after a woeful start, vowing to bounce back with a vengeance.   

“We have only pride to play for in the EuroLeague from here on? Really? Let’s see where we are at the end of the season and have this conversation again. You have now galvanized me even more to turn things around because I’ve never been a quitter,” he told reporters at the post-game press conference.

“I am not going to give up on our EuroLeague campaign in Round 10. You are sadly mistaken if you think the players are not disappointed and my job is to lift them and make sure they are ready for the next game. The fans and the players trust me and we’ll do everything humanly possible to flip the script.

“Fortune favors the brave and Milan earned their luck. They hit about 5 buzzer-beaters from downtown while we once again threw away a fourth-quarter lead. We lack focus on offense in crunch time and our shooting percentages are awful, that’s something we have to work on and improve,” added Obradovic, having refused to talk about the upcoming derby with Zvezda enjoying home-court advantage.

In contrast, Milan head coach Ettore Messina was delighted with his shorthanded team’s fighting spirit and die-hard attitude, which saw them prevail in a trademark fervent atmosphere generated by boisterous Partizan fans in a full house. 

“It was very important for all of us because we didn’t perform well two days ago \[in a 105-101 overtime defeat in Paris\]. We played against a good team, very well coached and supported by 20,000 people but we played hard and disciplined in the crucial moments. We will have ups and downs but hopefully we will be more consistent going forward,” said Messina, who had to make do without key players [Josh Nebo](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/euroleague/players/josh-nebo/011199/), [Shavon Shields](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/euroleague/players/shavon-shields/007831/) and [Stefano Tonut](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/euroleague/players/stefano-tonut/006509/).

He then heaped praise on the beleaguered Obradovic, whose number of critics on social media in Serbia seems to be increasing on a daily basis although he still appears to have the unwavering support of die-hard Partizan fans thronging the gym game after game. 

“I have maximum respect for Zeljko and what he has accomplished because he is above all of us in the EuroLeague,” said Messina. “He’s had an incredible career and he always treated his colleagues in a very positive way, win or lose. He is one of the classiest people I’ve seen in basketball.”

Whether a gesture of support from Messina, a longtime rival on the court and friend off it, will help Obradovic get back to winning ways soon remains to be seen, but under the circumstances time is certainly not his ally with a grueling fixture list around the corner.

Jerian Grant and Mathias Lessort helped lead Panathinaikos BC to a win at Virtus Bologna with some crucial plays in the final minutes of their Round 10 clash.

[Panathinaikos AKTOR Athens](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/en/euroleague/teams/panathinaikos-aktor-athens/pan/) won its seventh game of the season on Friday night, and sixth in the last seven games, after [edging Virtus Segafredo Bologna 77-82](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/en/euroleague/news/panathinaikos-wins-in-dramatic-finale-at-virtus-77-82/) in Round 10. In a game where both teams displayed a great deal of energy, it was the reigning champs who were the ones celebrating at the end.

"Both teams had an amazing hustle," Panathinaikos head coach Ergin Ataman said in a post-game EuroLeague TV interview. "Virtus played very aggressive, the atmosphere was incredible. So it was \[good\] to take a victory."

Ataman also added: "We played smarter in the last 3 or 4 minutes."

The Greens were particularly able to rely on [Jerian Grant](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/en/euroleague/players/jerian-grant/011204/) and [Mathias Lessort](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/euroleague/players/mathias-lessort/003842/) stepping up, two players who are known for the energy and hustle they bring to the floor.

Jerian Grant scored 8 of his 11 points in the fourth quarter, and 6 in the final 2 and a half minutes. Lessort scored 6 over the last 3:30 of the contest.

Especially big was the role of Grant. Although he is not one of the reigning champs' primary scoring options, he delivered on both ends of the court.

First, with the Greens up 68-71 and 2:22 to go, he stole the ball while defending Toko Shengelia in the low post and then went on to split free throws. Soon after, with the score tied at 72-72, Grant hit a step-back three that beat the shot clock with just over 1 minute left in the game.

After Virtus scored on the next possession, Grant perfectly fed Lessort with a backhanded bounce pass for Lessort's easy reverse dunk with 26 seconds remaining. Panathinaikos made a defensive stand on the ensuing possession, and Grant was the one to pull down a defensive rebound before sinking both foul shots to make it 74-79.

Virtus still had a chance thanks to a triple from [Will Clyburn](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/euroleague/players/will-clyburn/004888/), but [Juancho Hernangomez](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/euroleague/players/juancho-hernangomez/012712/) grabbed the offensive board after [Kendrick Nunn](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/euroleague/players/kendrick-nunn/012774/) split free throws with 6 seconds left, sealing the deal.

Panathinaikos had just 8 offensive rebounds for the night but two in the final 3 minutes, and both resulted in put-back baskets. Just more proof that it was Friday night hustle that won a tough road game for the reigning champions.
