Panathinaikos Athens has added shooting guard Matt Thomas to its roster on a deal until the end of the 2023-24 season, the club confirmed on Tuesday. Thomas (1.96 meters, 28 years old) last played for Chicago of the NBA, averaging 4.1 points and 1.3 rebounds in 39 games in the 2021-22 season. He has one year of experience in the 7DAYS EuroCup, which came with Valencia Basket in 2018-19. In that campaign, he became a EuroCup champion and averaged 12.7 points, 1.3 rebounds and 1.7 assists. Thomas will make his Turkish Airlines EuroLeague debut when he plays his first game for Panathinaikos.

Thomas began his professional career with Obradoiro of Spain in 2017-18 and averaged 15.4 points per game, which saw him earn a move to Valencia. The American played an important role in Valencia's 2018-19 EuroCup campaign, starting 9 of his 23 games and providing a boost on offense with his 12.7 points per contest on 47.7% three-point shooting. After one season at Valencia, Thomas agreed to a deal with Toronto of the NBA. He played 51 games in the NBA in his first season, averaging 4.6 points in 10.3 minutes on the floor. In 2020-21, Thomas suited up for Toronto on 25 occasions, having a scoring average of 2.8 points, before finishing the campaign with Utah, where he averaged 3.1 points in 22 games. Last season, he played for Chicago. Now, he will begin his first experience in Europe's premier club basketball competition, the EuroLeague.
