Despite being a key member of Barca’s bench unit during his time at the club, Smits stepped up when needed, with his best performances coming during the 2020-21 EuroLeague season. During that campaign, Smits recorded his highest PIR (23, vs. Valencia) and points in a game (20, vs. Fenerbahce). He helped Barca win three Spanish Copa del Rey titles and the 2021 Spanish League championship in his time there, also reaching back-to-back EuroLeague Final Fours in 2021, in which Barca went all the way to the Championship Game, and 2022. Smits started his professional career with Fuenlabrada and was chosen as the 2017 EuroCup Rising Star while playing there. He is also a regular with the Latvian national team.
