Olympiacos takes derby in the Greek League

Olympiacos Piraeus outlasted archrival Panathinaikos AKTOR Athens 90-86 in a thrilling derby in the Greek League on Sunday night. Despite trailing by 12 at halftime, the Reds came back and held on down the stretch. Tyson Ward played a pivotal role in igniting the comeback and finished with 12 points.
Sasha Vezenkov led thew winners with 22 points, Tyler Dorsey tallied 16 points and 8 assists and Nikola Milutinov scored 12, including the go-ahead basket in the final minute. For Panathinaikos, TJ Shorts had his finest game yet for the Greens with 19 points and 5 assists and Vasilis Toliopoulos contributed 14 points. Both teams were without All-EuroLeague guards with Evan Fournier sidelined for Olympiacos and reigning EuroLeague MVP Kendrick Nunn out for Panathinaikos.
Shorts was the go-to guy for Panathinaikos early, while Dorsey responded for Olympiacos. Konstantinos Mitoglou and Shorts caught fire in stretches in the second quarter to help the Greens to a 43-48 halftime edge. Alec Peters and Ward energized the Reds in the third quarter and Milutinov and Vezenkov helped Olympiacos grab a 53-52 lead.
The game came down to the closing minutes. Olympiacos made just enough key defensive stops while clutch baskets by Vezenkov and Milutinov helped the hosts stay ahead. Kostas Sloukas tried to push Panathinaikos late, but Frank Ntilikina made a key layup with 27 seconds remaining and Dorsey iced the game with a pair of free throws.
