Birutis adjusted and made Zalgiris better

Laurynas Birutis returned to Zalgiris Kaunas and the Turkish Airlines EuroLeague this season after three years away. He struggled at first, but has fully adjusted to the competition and proved it against Fenerbahce Beko Istanbul in Round 17.
Birutis went on Prienai on loan in the 2019-20 campaign and played two years in Spain for Monbus Obradoiro before returning to Zalgiris. He earned Spanish League MVP of the Round honors twice and averaged 13.1 points and 4.8 rebounds in his second season with Obradoiro. After his return home, Birutis had failed to score in double digits in his first 15 EuroLeague games, but things changed against AS Monaco in Round 16 when he posted career-highs of 10 points, 7 rebounds and 12 PIR.

Against Fenerbahce, Birutis went one step higher, leading Zalgiris to an 86-66 victory with 15 points on 7-of-10 two-point shooting, 6 rebounds, 3 assists, 3 steals and a PIR of 27. In the last two games, Coach Kazys Makvytis has decided to play him over 20 minutes per game and Birutis got the message, drastically improving his numbers.
"It was a really tough, physical game from the first minute. We lost Keenan [Evans] in the first minute, so all the team picked it up for him," Birutis said after the game. "I felt well. My teammates helped me a lot passing the ball and on defense, it's everybody's job, the whole team."
