Maccabi Playtika Tel Aviv announced late on Tuesday that it has relieved Coach Ioannis Sfairopoulos of his duties. Avi Even will lead the team on an interim basis.

The decision came 24 hours after Maccabi was upset by crosstown rival Hapoel Tel Aviv in the semifinals of the Israeli Cup. Sfairopoulos, who first joined Maccabi in November 2018, guided the club to a 57-51 record in his three-plus seasons in Tel Aviv. Together they had clinched a playoff berth in 2020 before that season was canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Sfairopoulos also led Maccabi to three consecutive Israeli championships and one Israeli Cup. He leaves the team with an 11-12 record in 12th place in the EuroLeague.
