Two very much in-form teams go head to head as third-place Monaco (21-11) welcomes 11th-place Zalgiris (14-18) for a key meeting in their respective postseason ambitions. Victory is the only option for both teams, and Zalgiris will be confident after winning three in a row, partly thanks to [Edmond Sumner](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/en/euroleague/players/edmond-sumner/012787/) stepping up in the backcourt to support the always productive [Keenan Evans](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/en/euroleague/players/keenan-evans/011218/). A crucial showdown at Palau Blaugrana will see Barcelona (21-11) attempt to take a step closer to a top-four qualification against a dangerous Maccabi team (19-13) that must win to maintain its slim hopes of the same achievement. Maccabi is on fire after winning six straight games with an explosive offense led by [Wade Baldwin](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/en/euroleague/players/wade-baldwin-iv/009863/) (at least 14 points in 13 consecutive games) in the backcourt and [Josh Nebo](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/en/euroleague/players/josh-nebo/011199/) (double-digits scoring in eight straight games) in the paint. Following consecutive away losses, Barça wish to reaffirm their championship-credentials when visiting an in-form Maccabi squad that has won three of its last four. The hosts are known for offensive rebounds and the Blaugrana may need their powerhouses to protect the glass.

With Baldwin leading the way, Maccabi rose from 10th in the standings at the onset of March with questions about its playoff hopes to seventh now with a shot at reaching the top six and direct access to the playoffs. Baldwin's stellar play throughout that 5-0 run that no other EuroLeague team could match at the very height of the playoff race made him Euroleague Basketball's choice as MVP for March.

Baldwin was second in the league in average PIR (23.2) and ranked fifth in scoring (18.4 ppg.) during March. He also posted 4.6 assists, 4.0 rebounds and 1.4 steals. Baldwin led the team in scoring in three of Maccabi's five March games and was second in another. The 1.93-meter guard was also second on the team in rebounding twice. His shining moment came when he posted a PIR of 46 in Round 30, which matched the most by any player in the league over the past three seasons.  

### Two years in a row in March

The MVP of the Month is named by Euroleague Basketball based on his and his team's performances. The award for March covered the five games played by all teams between Thursday, March 7, and Friday, March 29.

The honor marks the second consecutive season in which Baldwin was the MVP of March. He becomes the 24th player in competition history to win the MVP of the month twice and is the only player to ever win the MVP for March in [back-to-back seasons](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/en/euroleague/news/mvp-of-march-wade-baldwin-maccabi-playtika-tel-aviv/) and only the fourth player to do so in any month. He follows Ramunas Siskauskas (April 2007 and 2008), Ante Tomic (February 2013 and 2014) and Sasha Vezenkov (February 2022 and 2023) with that distinction. ### A magical month for Baldwin

Baldwin has been remarkably consistent in this, his second season with Maccabi. He has scored in double figures in 17 straight games and posted a PIR of at least a dozen in 13 consecutive appearances. And Baldwin was his consistently superb self throughout March. In Maccabi's first game of the month, it went into the fourth quarter down 6 against Zalgiris Kaunas before Baldwin scored 6 of his team-high 16 points in the final 5 minutes to wrap up an [83-76 victory](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/en/euroleague/game-center/2023-24/maccabi-playtika-tel-aviv-zalgiris-kaunas/E2023/246/#boxscore). A week later, Maccabi struggled in the second quarter and went into halftime down 47-31 at Crvena Zvezda Meridianbet Belgrade. Baldwin stuffed the stat sheet in the second half to lead a comeback. Round 30 brought with it the front end of March's two-round week and a meeting with LDLC ASVEL Villeurbanne. Maccabi again had a quiet spell to fall behind by 10 in the third quarter, but a determined Baldwin was like a wrecking ball in carrying his team to a [98-90 triumph](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/en/euroleague/game-center/2023-24/maccabi-playtika-tel-aviv-ldlc-asvel-villeurbanne/E2023/264/#boxscore). He posted 30 points, 5 rebounds and 10 assists and his PIR of 46 was tied for the second-highest by a Maccabi player in competition history. Three days later, Maccabi threw away a 16-point lead on the road against Baldwin's former team, FC Bayern Munich, and was trailing early in the fourth quarter. That's when Baldwin waved his wand again and scored 7 points the rest of the way to spark a [74-89 win](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/en/euroleague/game-center/2023-24/fc-bayern-munich-maccabi-playtika-tel-aviv/E2023/278/#boxscore). ### Baldwin's best season yet

Baldwin was able to put up impressive numbers in part thanks to his reliable mid-range game and ability to get to the basket and draw fouls. He shot 25-for-51 (49.0%) on two-pointers in March and went 33-for-38 from the foul line (86.8%). Baldwin drew 34 fouls in the month, while he tallied 23 assists with just 10 turnovers. All of those numbers are better than his already impressive season averages.

An All-EuroLeague Second Team selection last season, Baldwin has been even better in 2023-24. With only two rounds remaining in the regular season, he is third in the EuroLeague in both scoring (17.5 ppg.) and PIR (19.8). Baldwin leads the league in two-pointers attempted (8.8 per game) and free throws made (4.8), is eighth in assists (5.0 apg.) and 14th in steals (1.2 spg.), while shooting a career-high 40.2% on three-pointers. He will look to add to those impressive numbers while trying to lead Maccabi into the playoffs in the final rounds of the regular season.

Stats review: The most efficient scorers

With only two games remaining in the Turkish Airlines EuroLeague Regular Season, crunch time has arrived with over a dozen teams vying for position throughout the standings. Perhaps it was those stakes that made [Nigel Hayes-Davis's record-breaking 50-point scoring effort last Friday](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/en/euroleague/news/nigel-hayes-davis-sets-euroleague-single-game-scoring-record-with-50-points/) feel like even more of a curiosity than it already was.

Much has been made of Hayes-Davis's shooting in Fenerbahce Beko Istanbul's win over ALBA Berlin, but the splits are perhaps just as interesting. He scored 20 points in transition and 12 points running off screens. To put those numbers in perspective, Baskonia Vitoria-Gasteiz currently leads all teams scoring 14.7 points per game in transition and 7.1 per game in off screen situations. His route to 50 was as unique as it was impressive.

It also propelled Hayes-Davis towards to the top of this season's scoring efficiency leaderboards. After scoring his 50 points in just 31 possessions, Hayes-Davis now ranks behind only [Nikola Mirotic](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/en/euroleague/players/nikola-mirotic/000796/) – who has appeared in just 19 games for EA7 Emporio Armani Milan – in offensive efficiency among the 31 players using over 12 possessions per game this season.

When Mirotic has been healthy, he remains devastatingly effective on the offensive end, shooting over 64% from inside the arc, 44% from beyond it, and 85% from the line. Hayes-Davis has not fallen too far behind those marks while turning the ball over a bit less frequently. He's had a breakout year, of sorts, at age 29.

[Keenan Evans](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/en/euroleague/players/keenan-evans/011218/) has come full circle after emerging as a star for Zalgiris Kaunas last season before missing the second half of the season with an injury. While he hit the ground running early this year, he has continued to build steam as he attempts to lift his team into the Play-In Showdown by playing the best basketball of his career over the last several months. He leads the EuroLeague by a wide margin in pick-and-roll scoring.

Currently standing in Zalgiris's way in the standings is an Anadolu Efes Istanbul team led by [Shane Larkin](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/en/euroleague/players/shane-larkin/007200/), who has been playing to an MVP standard in his own right during March. Larkin has scored 1.30 points per possession over the last month – nearly identical to the preposterous 1.29 points-per-possession standard he set during pandemic-shortened 2019-20 season.

The top 5 most efficient EuroLeague scorers

[Chima Moneke](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/en/euroleague/players/chima-moneke/012201/) had no such pedigree entering the year but has been one of the EuroLeague's most improved players. After scoring only 63 points over 16 appearances last season, he has scored 438 over 31 this year and is thriving in transition to put Baskonia Vitoria-Gasteiz in position to clinch a postseason berth with a victory in either of the final two rounds.

[Mathias Lessort](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/en/euroleague/players/mathias-lessort/003842/) has helped Panathinaikos AKTOR Athens find its way to the top of the six-team group that will stretch from second place all the way to the Play-In Showdown when the regular season ends. He leads the EuroLeague in dunks and points scored rolling to the rim this season.

[Nemanja Nedovic](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/en/euroleague/players/nemanja-nedovic/000848/) and [Shavon Shields ](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/en/euroleague/players/shavon-shields/007831/)have both scored efficiently despite doing a little bit of everything from the perimeter on and off the ball for their respective teams.

With most of these players representing teams that still have a great deal to play for over the next two weeks, it will be fascinating to see if a hero emerges from this group, even if it isn't in a record-setting display.

Confident Ataman proving infectious at Panathinaikos

Elite sportspeople come in all sorts of shapes and sizes, from different backgrounds, with different personalities and with different strengths and abilities. 

But they tend to share one common characteristic: unshakeable self-belief. 

The kind of confidence that allows them to overcome obstacles, banish past failures, make the most of opportunities and express their talents. The kind of confidence necessary to become a winner, even when losing might be the more likely outcome. 

In the world of European basketball, nobody in recent years has exuded more self-belief than Ergin Ataman. 

Regularly reminding everybody that he had won every trophy available except the Turkish Airlines EuroLeague title, Ataman arrived at a habitually underperforming Anadolu Efes Istanbul and had the force of personality and internal strength of character to help a talented bunch of players do just that. Twice. 

And now he’s doing it again. 

When Ataman took over at Panathinaikos AKTOR Athens last summer, he wasted no time in openly stating that his ambition is to take the team to the Final Four – quite a bold pledge for a team that finished next-to-bottom in last season’s standings, hasn’t reached the semifinals for more than a decade and had the task of finding instant chemistry with an almost entirely new roster and a new coaching staff. 

It didn’t take long for Ataman’s new-look Panathinaikos to hit its stride, and Friday night’s thrilling 79-81 win at Virtus Segafredo Bologna means the Greens still have their top-four fate in their own hands: victory in the final two games of the regular season, at Bayern and at home to ALBA Berlin, would ensure home-court advantage in the playoffs. And for a team that hasn’t lost at home since December, that would mean an extremely good chance of fulfilling Ataman’s Final Four ambition. 

The latest triumph was secured by a player who shares Ataman’s sense of self-belief, with Kendrick Nunn hitting a game-winning floater on the final buzzer just a few days after declaring himself to be the best offensive player in the competition. 

The numbers don’t even come close to agreeing with Nunn’s assertion. With an average of 14.8 points per game, Nunn ranks only ninth in the league in scoring, with an average output roughly 25% lower than league leader Mike James, who also happens to be the competition’s all-time leading scorer.  

In terms of assists, Nunn’s 3.0 dimes per night don’t even rank in the EuroLeague’s top 25, and neither do his – let's be honest – mediocre shooting percentages of 45.3% from two-point range and 36.4% from beyond the arc.  

In fact, considering his average PIR of 10.1 - considerably lower than Kostas Sloukas, Jerian Grant, Dinos Mitoglou and Mathias Lessort, and exactly the same as Marius Grigonis – it would be difficult to argue that Nunn is the best offensive player in his team, never mind the whole league. 

But that’s not the point. The point is that coach Ataman’s unshakeable belief in his own abilities is trickling down into his team.  

Over the last few years, Panathinaikos has been a sorry story of underachievement, finishing 16th, 13th, and 17th in the last three seasons and rarely looking like a playoffs team, never mind a Final Four contender. 

Turning around that sequence requires more than just talent. It also requires a mindset shift, the nature of which Ataman successfully instilled at Efes, another perennial underachiever before he turned the Turkish team into back-to-back champions. 

So it doesn’t matter whether Nunn’s claim to be the best offensive player in the league is somewhat over-inflated. What matters is that with a must-win game tied up on the last possession, he had the ability and the confidence to calmly dribble the ball towards the Virtus basket, wait until the shot clock had almost expired and then casually flip up a game-winning floater that keeps Panathinaikos’s Final Four ambitions very much on track.

Let's see how far that confidence can take them.
